Vista SP1 Help Files

Mar 28, 2008

Windows Vista SP1 stand-alone packages do not contain the updated Windows Vista SP1 Help files. The updated Windows Vista Help file packages are named "Update for Help Files."

These files are packaged separately for each language. The updated Help files have been excluded from the stand-alone SP1 packages to reduce the size of the packages. However, the updated Windows Vista Help files are contained in the retail and OEM versions of Windows Vista that include SP1. Therefore, if you perform a clean installation of a version of Windows Vista that includes SP1, you do not have to add an updated Help file....

Having Two Copies Of Vista On One Computer: Install Vista On The Smaller Drive, Boot With That, And Access Files On The Other Drive

Dec 25, 2008

Right now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.

My question is-

Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).

"Vista Will Not Play MPEG Or MP3 Files If Vista Thinks They Are Illegal Downloads"

Feb 11, 2008

I was discussing Vista with a few friends over on a Linux website. They say: Vista will not play MPEG or MP3 files if Vista thinks they are illegal downloads. Vista will not allow you to store downloaded music. Vista calls home every day to tell MS what programs, keystrokes and internet sites you use. Vista will not allow you to Copy a DVD for your own home use as a backup. Is any of this true? I have yet to have any problems. I do value what little privacy I can get so if Vista calls home everyday that's crap...

I was just wondering if it is possible to "open" a Windows XP bkf file in Vista?

I have recently moved over to a new PC and backed up all my previous PC.

But when I go to open it it doesn't recognise the file ending.

Paging Files In Vista

Sep 10, 2009

I would like to create 2 paging files, one on C: and the other on an eSata external drive. I've heard 2 sides of how. One to let the computer decide (System Managed Size) on both drives, and the other to have a static page file on both as to eliminate fragmentation. System Managed or a Static pagefile? And if a static, how large on both. I have 4G Ram?

How To Share Files Between Xp And Vista

Unable To Open Zip Files In Vista

Nov 19, 2009

Since installing AVG 9 I have a few problems, one which is now known to AVG that attachements cannot be sent in the likes of Yahoo and Sky Mail, this has gone to the developers.

This one may not be AV related so thought I would ask here.

I have been unzipping files in Vista with no problem, after the download of AVG 9 I am unable to open them.

When I right click on the file I do not get Extract all in the list.

I do not know which is the program that opens zip files within Vista and so I am unable to tell it which program to Open with.

Unable To Share Files Between XP And Vista

Feb 2, 2008

Ive just installed Vista Ultimate 64 bit on my comp and im having trouble sharing files with another computer that has WinXP 32bit installed. Ive checked that the workgroup names are the same and that file sharing is enabled, but it wont allow me to access files on my vista machine FROM the winxp machine. I have no trouble accessing files on the winxp machine from my vista machine, but it wont work the other way around. It gives me an access denied error due to permissions, even though I let it have full control. Could this be because the 32bit is clashing with the 64 bit? Because I previously have winxp installed on both machines and file sharing was working fine.

What Tells Files Os Running Is Vista

Jun 7, 2008

I know this seems totally absurd but really, what tells files that the OS you are running is Vista Home Prem. or Ultimate? I know there entries in the HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersion in the registry and from what Carey Frisch [MVP] told me that sysinfo32 gets its info from some weird file in the %SystemRoot%System32WbemRepository folder that I can only open in a text format.

Accessing Hidden Files On External From XP, In Vista 64

Feb 21, 2009

Recently I upgraded my computer. I have some hidden files on my external from my old system (XP). I cannot, for the life of me get these files to open.

Here is what I have tried:

- Changing ownership (after disabling the easy sharing folder option)

- Working with the admin command prompt (every time it said the folder on my external was a bad or syntactically incorrect entry).

- Changing user permissions.

- Logging in on safe mode and trying the above things.

The files show up as green text, and even after all of these attempts (and copious head-against-wall banging) I cannot open the files. Every program I try to open them with says “You do not have permission to access this file”. A similar message is displayed every time I try to move or change the files.

I have been able to open a few of the files (since the problem began) even though they do not seem to be different file types or status’.

I read a few threads similar to this, but every method has failed, and my problem seems a little different given the XP to Vista nature of the problem and the green text nonsense.

VISTA X64: Shows A Program Files (x86) Folder

May 22, 2008

When I go into the C: Drive.. it shows program files.. and then it also shows a Program Files (x86) folder.. why do I have both, and one is 32 bit. Whats it for, what should I use it for. or do the things you try and install that are 32 bit go in there, and the others go in the normal file?? Please let me kno what the deal is with that.

One last question, I just got a new system built.. and now I wanna take the HD from my old system, add it to my new one.. and move everything over, is it just that simple. plug it in.. let my computer see it. open and drag everything. or is there ways to do it. Like I don't wanna just drag everything or I'd have 2 of everything. and it would take forever to do it all folder at a time. So what should I do. Open my Music and drag it all into My music new system. so the folder stays and stuff inside get transfered. or what?

whats the best way to just get all my programs, and all my files over..Should I transfer over all the install files.. or should I redownload and reinstall all the stuff I need online.. to make sure i get 64 bit ones if available..?? Let me kno please!! I'm going to do it tonight.

Vista Installing Edit The Files Get Reintrouduced 32-bit

Mar 10, 2010

I was using Windows XP on my desktop before. There was some changes I had to make with the hardware. I am currently on my laptop with Windows Vista 64-bit. I plan on installing XP or Windows 7 hopefully this weekend. But since it may take longer than expected: I do have certain files I transfered from my old hard-drive in an external hard-drive enclosure through my laptop onto an external hard-drive.

I was wondering if I edit the files, the rtf files (rich text files) or the mp3 metadata for instance: Will it be a problem when those files get re-introduced into a 32-bit environment or another OS? I doubt it since a file is a file. If I download or view a file from myspace or soundcloud, or microsofts site I am pretty sure it is irrelevant what operating system was used to make the program. As long as I have the right player, program, viewer, application, etc. I know if a file is 64-bit it won't work in 32-bit.
