Vista Terribly Slow To Copy Files?

Mar 1, 2009

Vista SP1. It took over THIRTY FIVE minutes to copy 2.4 GB of files to a
pen drive.
Copying the same 2.4 GB of files from the pen drive to my Linux Netbook
took less than FIVE minutes.
Why is Vista so appallingly slow at copying?

Copying Files Bt It Took About Six Hours To Copy About 20 Gig (I Have About 180 Gig To Copy)

Mar 23, 2008

I am trying to copy files from my usb hard drive: K: to my network external drive Z:
I am trying to copy everything from one to another (files in folders and files that are not in folders)

I tried selecting all and then send to Z:, but it took about six hours to copy about 20 gig (I have about 180 gig to copy)

I read some where that robocopy is a faster and better way to copy files. The thing is I do not know what syntax to use. I was wondering if someone could tell me the syntax I should use to copy EVERYTHING from the usb driveK: to the network drive Z:

Copy/backup My Files Says ; "You'll Need To Provide Administrator Permission To Copy To This File."

May 1, 2008

My old Windows XP PC died months ago (motherboard problems) and so I took out the hard drive (which still functions fine) and put it in my new PC, but I can't seem to copy any of my files in the My Documents folder from the old drive to my newer larger drive. I've had this drive in here for the last several months and have had no problems writing other files to this 'older' drive (250 gig Maxtor 16mb cache, 7,200RPM drive (btw it's only a year old), but when I try to copy files to another drive I get the following error message: "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy to this file." This only happens with files that are in the My Documents folder. My current login has administrator rights, so I'm thinking some how this has something to do with this drive being from a different computer's installation of XP.

Copy Process Becomes Dead Slow?

Jul 29, 2009

A few days ago I upgraded my system to aforementioned specs. I needed to copy data from old Seagate 80 GB IDE drive to my new 160 GB SATA drive. What was really annoying that when I tried to copy a file from IDE drive to SATA drive for example a file of 650 MB started with great copy speed but gradually slowed to a crawl and it took a long time for me to transfer data.

SP1 - File Copy And Delete Still Very Slow

Mar 24, 2008

I regularly need to delete very large backup files or move data around my hard drive. Copying or deleting files or folders still takes and absolute age. I'm still resorting to having to reboot back into Windows XP to undertake file management. This is quite disheartening to say the least. Anyone else had a better experiences of SP1 regards this? Don't get me wrong, it hasn't made things any worse.. it's just not made things any better. Surely this is a pretty fundamental thing for an OS to be able to do.

Extremely SLOW File Copy 64 To XP SP3

Jan 23, 2009

I'm a new Vista user and I've been struggling with extremely slow file copies between my Vista 64 Home Premium SP1 system and my XP SP3 system. I've searched and searched and tried a number of suggestions in posts that I have found. None have worked. I'm running a Wireless G (54mbps) network. My Internet access from both system is very fast (FiOS 20mbps download), so no issues there.

When I say extremely slow I'm talking less than 200 KBps. I get the same slow response using Explorer and Robocopy. I have disabled autotuning and RSS with these commands.

netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

Cannot Copy Files

Jan 10, 2009

I've recently upgraded one machine from XP Pro to Vista Business 32-bit, and the other is a brand new laptop with Vista Home Premium x64. Both exhibit the following problem. or is it just me? The setup: On media you can write protect (i.e., a flash drive) make a copy of mfc71.dll (usually found in Windowssystem32... other MFC DLLs seem to have the same effect but try this one if you have it). Now, remove the media, write-protect it and re-insert it. Attempt to copy that DLL from the media to your desktop (NOT in Windows or other highly protected areas). Attempt to read the properties page of the DLL as it sits on the media: doesn't work.

Can someone explain why one cannot copy or even read the properties of such DLLs? I can see if it's replacing something bad or such, but simple copying is disallowed if the DLL is on write-protected media. What's up with that? And how might one get that to work normally? I've never seen anything quite like it. Why does this matter? Because it causes MAJOR problems when comparing backup media that uses an emulation layer to emulate a drive (e.g., TrueCrypt). In the example above it just doesn't work. in something like TrueCrypt (within a write-protected volume) it locks Explorer up quite thoroughly, requiring a reboot. I presume that's a failure of TrueCrypt but still, what the heck is Vista doing here?

Copy Files From One Computer To The Other

Nov 3, 2008

I want to say that all my drivers are updates and windows is updated as well. This is also valid for any other computers on the network. My computer runs vista home premium 64 bit, the other computers on the network run home premium 32 bit. We have a gbit network through a d-link router (dir655) which has never given us any problems. We have the d-link because I couldn't find any other router at the time which supported a glass fibre connection at the speed we have (50 mbit synchronous) and which also offered a 1 gbit home networking solution (wired) while also offering the possibility of using it with the occasional wifi device (such as my archos 605 media player).

my first annoyance has to do with the network. SP1 made it better, but I'm still annoyed. When I copy files from one computer to the other, the file transfer goes at varrying speeds. The transfer speed seems to depend on one thing and one thing only, and that is on whether the other computer is being used at all. If the other computer is idle (so not even the mouse is moved, there is no user input at all), transfer speeds are between 55 and 70 mb per second. Which is good, I like this. When there is any kind of activity on the other computer, whether this is typing, using the mouse or any such thing (user initiated I mean.... a virus scan doesn't seem to affect the transfer speed) the transfer speeds drop down to a max of about 18 mb per second. When any type of media player is on, even when paused, it drops down further to between 13 and 15 mb per second. When that media player is windows media player, the transfer speed is usually a bit lower still.

I simply do not understand why this is. The transfer speeds with no activity at all show that there is a possibility of achieving these speeds... the network is not used when someone moves their mouse, so why can't I use the full extent of the network when someone is using their mouse, or typing something in word? Also, I know that a media player automatically reserves bandwidth for streaming, but going from a max of 70 mb/s to 15 mb/s seems a bit much to me for streaming purposes. I would also have thought that MS could make their media player a bit smarter... I mean, how hard can it be for them to disable the bandwidth reserving when someone is playing a local file?......

Copy The Files: Windows Has Found This File Is Potentially Harmful

Feb 23, 2009

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate with Windows Defender Disabled and Norton Internet Security 2009 installed. Someone who is completely trusted sent me an email with an attachment. The attachment was defined as a ZIPP file. I copied the file to my desktop and renamed it to a ZIP file to access the enclosed files. Within the ZIP are four OCX files which I need to copy to my System32 directory.

When I attempt to copy the files to any location in my computer, I get "Windows has found this file is potentially harmful. To help protect your computer, Windows has blocked access to this file." When I click on the "How does this help protect my computer." link it takes me to Windows Mail help. This has nothing to do with Windows Mail. Crash Or Slow Down Vista It Usually Gets Documented In Vista's Error Logs

Jun 13, 2008

The often heard recurring theme spread by no nothing trolls and fanboys is if Vista isn't working right, it must be something you did rather than owning up to how badly Vista is designed once you start poking around and SEE how badly implemented it is. Much of the frustration with Vista comes from it's applets crashing or acting up for no apparent reason. Since these applets are INTERNAL and built-in as part of Vista's core the often heard excuse it's some third party driver, a hardware problem or other software you installed is proven to be bogus.

When something happens to either crash or slow down Vista it usually gets documented in Vista's Error Logs. However like most everything else Microsoft does, the logs are of little actual value other than pointing to how poorly designed and broken Vista really is.

To illustrate how broken Vista is, here's my experience this morning. As usual I started my day going to Google (my default home page) and clicking on News to see what the headlines were. Microsoft's browser hung. Waiting for it to respond, after 90 seconds I gave up and sure enough was treated to the usual BS asking if you want to wait longer or shut it down. I shut IE7 down. Next I went to Event Viewer......

Slow Performance When Working Online With Offline Files

Mar 29, 2008

I am currently testing Vista in our XP Pro/2003 environment. The XP clients perform perfectly in the same setup. We are using Netgear Managed Switches. To give you an idea of what I mean by slow/fine. When working offline, Word 2007 (or example) will open in less than 2 secs. When working online it is likely to take at least 10 secs. The HDD is busy continuously, slowing performance to a crawl. Something else I have observed is that this High Disk Activity does not start until all of the files that the user has chosen to be offline have been downloaded into the cache as observed by Network
Utilization in task manager. I have a feeling the problem may lay in Vista's background sync? All users are using roaming profiles (Stored on a seperate server) and Folder redirection for all profile folders.
