Do You Want To Move Or Copy Files From This Zone?

Apr 20, 2008

I'm experiencing a problem that I cannot solve even though some people have proposed solutions to it.
When I try to copy files from my NAS (Synology DS207+) to my hard drive over the network, this is what I have to answer to first:

I've tried all the suggested solutions by changing the intranet settings in internet options, done some registry hacks, but I can't get rid of this dialogue.

I'm running Vista Ultimate SP1 X64 and I'm beginning to believe that the issue has come after SP1.

Cannot Move Or Copy/cut And Paste Files

Aug 27, 2008

I can not move, copy and paste OR cut and past files from folder to folder anywhere (desktop -> folder on desktop, my docs -> random folder, etc).

I am the sole user of this machine and my account is in the administrators group. I have tried taking ownership of the files and folders and it still does not work.

I have searched and searched and can not find a working solution to this problem.

I an running Vista Ultimate 32 Bit SP1 and have not installed any new applications that would cause this type of issue.

Complete Lack In Ability To Move, Copy And Delete Files

May 21, 2007

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing Vista's complete lack in ability to move, copy and delete files in a timely fashion? It's a well reported bug, but just wondering how many *real* Vista users see it. Basically Vista takes forever to delete large quanties of files, or even movecopy them. Aparently there is a fix on the way.

Copy And Move Paralysis

Mar 23, 2008

So what's the deal with the interminable copies and moves with Vista? Can't MS get anything right? There's something going on in the background someplace that hoses file and directory transfers *-on the same computer-*. I turned off the ridiculous indexing for searches, no luck there. I even tried an external command (mv in Cygwin) and it still took too long. I suspect that the files I think are available for plain old copy and move operations are really some demented abstraction - the "files" and "Folders" are merely representations of some bizarre MS database scheme. Rather than just talk to the disk sector in the usual way, a disk request has to first navigate some convoluted maze of really useless internal dependencies. Bet it's related to Microsoft's version of security.

Copy/backup My Files Says ; "You'll Need To Provide Administrator Permission To Copy To This File."

May 1, 2008

My old Windows XP PC died months ago (motherboard problems) and so I took out the hard drive (which still functions fine) and put it in my new PC, but I can't seem to copy any of my files in the My Documents folder from the old drive to my newer larger drive. I've had this drive in here for the last several months and have had no problems writing other files to this 'older' drive (250 gig Maxtor 16mb cache, 7,200RPM drive (btw it's only a year old), but when I try to copy files to another drive I get the following error message: "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy to this file." This only happens with files that are in the My Documents folder. My current login has administrator rights, so I'm thinking some how this has something to do with this drive being from a different computer's installation of XP.

Cannot Move Files Or Folders

Jun 18, 2008

I can't move files(or folders) from one folder to another. I can delete, rename, create, and edit files, but I cannot move them. i.e. I select a file, ctrl x or c or right click and copy or cut, then change directory and paste it, and windows beeps at me and no pasting is done. Drag and drop doesn't work either, as it is the same concept. Now, if I move a file via command prompt as administrator, the file can be moved between directories, but frankly, I don't want to be typing out file names all of the time. My User Account is listed as Administrator when I check via control panel.

I can copy/paste text, so the clipboard is working. The read only box is checked on the folders but as I understand it, that's normal? I am listed as the owner of the files and I have "full control" over them. This problem is persistent throughout my entire computer, including all drives, and even USB flash drives. I have tried booting with the windows cd and repairing the installation.

The problem began because of me trying to tweak my computer using a tutorial. I'm guessing the cause was either disabling UAC or executing the "Net user administrator activate:yes" command in command prompt (probably the latter). I undid all changes I made to try to fix theproblem

Can't Run Move Big Files Unrelated Exe

i recently downloaded a particularly large .exe (1.58 gigs) and when I go to run it, my windows explorer freezes up and I have to restart it. The same thing happens when I try to move it, so its stuck in my download folder. I then downloaded the lite installer for the game, that worked, but it has a bug, so I want to just run the big one. Does anyone know why I can't run/move big files? I downloaded another unrelated exe last night, and I still cant run or move them.

FTP: Access To To Move Files Back

Jan 7, 2010

I've had for the last 2-3 days: There's an FTP that I need access to to move files back and forth between co-workers. I use Windows Explorer to access this, normally with no issues.....just type in the ftp address, and there it is. Now whenever I do this, I get an error: This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel.

I went into the Set Associations control panel, but don't know what extension to change, as it's not really a "file", and there's no mention anywhere of FTP. Everyone else that uses the FTP doesn't have an issue, so it's not a problem with the ftp itself.

Windows - Cannot Delete, Move, Rename Or Files

Aug 2, 2009

I have had this problem for a while now, and it has really started to wind me up lately. I have read many threads and tutorials, and tried some out aswell, but nothing has worked unfortunately. Whenever I try to move or delete a file, the box comes up:

But then once that pops up nothing else happens, and it just freezes. I have tried leaving it for a while and seeing if it just takes time but also nothing happened. Even if I click cancel, it freezes. To close the window, I have to go into the task manager and close it from there, which restarts Windows Explorer. When renaming a file or folder, I can type the name I want in, but once I press enter Windows Explorer freezes and I have to go into task manager again.............

Cannot Copy Files

Jan 10, 2009

I've recently upgraded one machine from XP Pro to Vista Business 32-bit, and the other is a brand new laptop with Vista Home Premium x64. Both exhibit the following problem. or is it just me? The setup: On media you can write protect (i.e., a flash drive) make a copy of mfc71.dll (usually found in Windowssystem32... other MFC DLLs seem to have the same effect but try this one if you have it). Now, remove the media, write-protect it and re-insert it. Attempt to copy that DLL from the media to your desktop (NOT in Windows or other highly protected areas). Attempt to read the properties page of the DLL as it sits on the media: doesn't work.

Can someone explain why one cannot copy or even read the properties of such DLLs? I can see if it's replacing something bad or such, but simple copying is disallowed if the DLL is on write-protected media. What's up with that? And how might one get that to work normally? I've never seen anything quite like it. Why does this matter? Because it causes MAJOR problems when comparing backup media that uses an emulation layer to emulate a drive (e.g., TrueCrypt). In the example above it just doesn't work. in something like TrueCrypt (within a write-protected volume) it locks Explorer up quite thoroughly, requiring a reboot. I presume that's a failure of TrueCrypt but still, what the heck is Vista doing here?

Copy Files From One Computer To The Other

Nov 3, 2008

I want to say that all my drivers are updates and windows is updated as well. This is also valid for any other computers on the network. My computer runs vista home premium 64 bit, the other computers on the network run home premium 32 bit. We have a gbit network through a d-link router (dir655) which has never given us any problems. We have the d-link because I couldn't find any other router at the time which supported a glass fibre connection at the speed we have (50 mbit synchronous) and which also offered a 1 gbit home networking solution (wired) while also offering the possibility of using it with the occasional wifi device (such as my archos 605 media player).

my first annoyance has to do with the network. SP1 made it better, but I'm still annoyed. When I copy files from one computer to the other, the file transfer goes at varrying speeds. The transfer speed seems to depend on one thing and one thing only, and that is on whether the other computer is being used at all. If the other computer is idle (so not even the mouse is moved, there is no user input at all), transfer speeds are between 55 and 70 mb per second. Which is good, I like this. When there is any kind of activity on the other computer, whether this is typing, using the mouse or any such thing (user initiated I mean.... a virus scan doesn't seem to affect the transfer speed) the transfer speeds drop down to a max of about 18 mb per second. When any type of media player is on, even when paused, it drops down further to between 13 and 15 mb per second. When that media player is windows media player, the transfer speed is usually a bit lower still.

I simply do not understand why this is. The transfer speeds with no activity at all show that there is a possibility of achieving these speeds... the network is not used when someone moves their mouse, so why can't I use the full extent of the network when someone is using their mouse, or typing something in word? Also, I know that a media player automatically reserves bandwidth for streaming, but going from a max of 70 mb/s to 15 mb/s seems a bit much to me for streaming purposes. I would also have thought that MS could make their media player a bit smarter... I mean, how hard can it be for them to disable the bandwidth reserving when someone is playing a local file?......

No Longer Can Copy Files To System
