Stupid Empowering Technology Framework Errored Hasn't Worked
Dec 28, 2008
I'm completely lost here. I just bought an Acer Aspire 4720z at the beginning of the month and I completely regret it already!! It came with Vista Home Premium, 2GB of memory, 120 GB hard drive and intel dual processor 1.83GHZ. About a week after I got it the stupid empowering technology framework errored out and hasn't worked since. I never even got a chance to make the recovery CD since I didn't know I would have to make one and didn't buy any DVD-r's.
Well I called Acer and they say the only way to fix the errors I'm getting is to restore to factory default and they sent me the set of recovery disks that I need. Well I guess I should of just said screw it and left it alone. It gets all the way through the restore to where it restarts then command prompt comes up sayings "Update device driver, please wait" Then the error "Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed" comes up. I click OK and it restarts the computer and now all I get is "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install windows, click "OK" to restart the computer and then restart installation".
I have tried to reinstall it probably over 7 times now with the same results. I was on the phone with Acer most the day yesterday. They gave me 2 ISOs to downlaod and burn that format and partition the hard drive. They work but when I go to put Vista on it, I get the same error over and over again. I really don't want to resort to sending it in for repair and they said chances are that's the next step. I'm half tempted just to put XP on it but I've only had it a month and I don't want to void the warranty. ? Let me know if you need any more information about my system.

My C drive is filling up for some reason. I haven't installed anything new to it in a long time and have next to nothing downloaded on it. The drive is 70GB of which about 17 GB is stuff I've added. However, I apparently have used up 68 GB!! ANtivirus (AVG, Norton previous) hasn't detected anything.
It appears my C:Windows is 19 GB and another file, C:UsersMyname is using up another 16 GB. Can I reduce these, and how? Also, that leaves another 26GB completely unaccounted for! What's going on here?

The progression of software and gaming technology:
As times goes on, technology inevitably advances. Back in the 1980s, words like megabyte were considered to represent a large amount of space on a hard drive or in total system ram. In the mid 1990s, we began to see megabytes in mass numbers when it came to RAM. At present, we are in the midst of the first decade in the 21st century: Hard drives are just now begining to be meassured in terabytes and ram is being meassured in multiple gigs.
With the increase in horsepower and ranchspace that fuels PCs as they advance, software becomes hungrier and hungrier of these resources. If you try to run Windows XP on a PC built for Windows 95, you will note that the entire system may come to a hault. Likewise, if you attempt to run Windows Vista and DirectX10 games on a machine built for Windows XP, you will encounter similar results!
This means that with each new installment of Windows that there is a new set of standards for system requirements to run the operating system. Windows Vista is more hungry than Windows XP when it comes to your system's resources. Everything you run will run slower on Vista due to the simple fact that Vista uses more of your system, so, do not post your frame rates and ask us, "why are they lower!?".
Windows XP was designed to run with a reccomended 512mb of ram and an optimal 2gb of ram for gaming. If you disagree with me, try running Battlefield 2142 in Titan Game Mode on a 64 person server with maximum detail if you think windows XP doesn't want 2gb of ram for optimal performance. When converting to windows vista it is important to note, Vista uses more of your base system, so, your system should be proportionately stronger in order to strong the performance dip!..................

As there is no broadband to our house, we have 3G internet through Bouygues Telecom. We're trying to configure the mail and we have the POP3 incoming mail address just fine, but can't get an SMTP to work for outgoing mail. We've been to the Bouygues shop to ask the address it should be, but they don't seem to know and the information they provided doesn't work.Do you know how the Windows Mail and 3G is usually configured?

I first set hands on an IBM PC in 1980: DOS 2.0, Word 1.0 & Lotus 1 (not 1a). I'm organized can find things on a hard drive just fine, thank you very much. I'm used to a tree and a file list, and had them with PCTools long before Peter bought that app and turned it into Norton Utilities or Gates even dreamed of such a thing as part of his OS.
Vista's Explorer tree goes:
Desktop
Sarah
Public
Computer
etc
I understand and use Computer, and I'm finding Public useful, but in Sarah, there are some shortcuts that don't go anywhere, e.g., application data, local settings, my documents, cookies, etc. When I left-click on them, all I ever get is "location not available" "access denied" with blather in between.
Do they have a name? I tried hunting for info on them, but without a specific name for them, it's impossible. What earthly use are those shortcuts supposed to be if you can't click on them and go anywhere? Is there someplace else that they show up or do they only exist in explorer under the user name? If they do show somewhere else, are they any use there? Can they be safely deleted? I've already tried moving them and you can't.
I'm guessing that "Sarah" is my personal user collection of folders or shell folders. It has already "collected" stuff that I don't want to see there. I'd like to clean it up, but I'll settle for getting rid of these bits of trash first.

Not really a virus, its an "anti" virus named antivirus 2010, Keep asking my mum to pay to clean the infection. Ofcouse,we are not stupid..everyone know that this "anti" virus is a fake one and all they want is money.. I tried to use spydoctor,it cannot clean it.. i tried to use AVG,it cleaned it on the first day but then another day the antivirus thing pops up again.. If you delete it,it reinstall itself..
Most annoying thing is that, After a certain time using her computer, the antivirus will pop up and say "your computer is infected with serious virus and it you have to turn your computer off to prevent the damage(something like dat..)" And there is 2 option "Get Protection!"(paying money) "ok" And u cannot move that window, cannot close it..so u have to click ok- Is there any thing that can clean these virus? My mum is getting annoyed by it. My mum is not a safely computer user. Her laptop also got the msn virus, which auto sends message to other and give them a link which contain virus.

I will try to be as specific as possible, bu I am not that computer literate, so bear with me. I just got a new computer, my old one was windows XP and this one is windows vista. I know nothing about Vista. I am trying to set up my email account from ymail (Yahoo). I put in my dispaly name, that was easy enough, next, my email address. ClemonsKimberly@ymail.com, also easy enough, then comes the part I dont get... There is a drop down box for incoming email server, in it currently is POP3, other options are IMAP and HTTP. I dont know which one to use. The next box says Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) sever: I do not know what to put in the box below this. Next is outgoing mail server (SMTP) name: I also do not know what to put in the box under this. Finally there is a box for me to check (or not) for outgoing server requires authentication. I have read a lot of stuff from the computers help pages and HP advisor but I am still lost can anyone help...This is causing me to not beable to email people that I frequently talk to like our mayor, or the news channels because their pages say email me click here and this stupid box keep showing up, without it I cant email these people because they only recieve mail this way.

I have a Sony VAIO that came with Vista Premium installed. I have installed a few programs on it and have had varrying problems. My most recent problem is having a "demo" version of a software which I then purchased and attempted to apply the license to it. It says it has to reboot to make changes, but when it restarts it is still in the demo mode. No changes made. By itself it would seem that it is a problem with the software. But, I have another program (Ikea Kitchen Builder 08) that when installed accesses removed and deleted files from a previous install version of it as well (Ikea kitchen builder 07). Both of these programs install and work perfectly on Windows XP. But for some stupid reason Vista doesn't allow these programs to successfuly install themselves.

I've spent all day trying to install dot net framework 1.1 on my system, which is necessary to run old programs with. It's obviously not compatable with the new Vista. These are the following things I have tried all day until my brain has broken:
I followed these instructions innumerous times, and when I attempt to install using Admin/Command Prompt, it tells me that the commands given here (and at every other place that has pointed me there, which are many!) are invalid commands. It won't allow me to delete the ">" after my name in order to put in the commands, or change anything. I've tried the commands in many different orders, and other commands, to no avail.
I followed these instructions as well, which didn't do a bloody thing.
Finally, tonight I followed these instructions, and have run into the same issue when attempting to install v. 1.0 and 1.1, which is that they're not compatable with Vista. (This also has left me with NO framework as I write this post.)
Now, I know I've done this before and installed dot net framework 1.1 just fine in the past, but I can't recall exactly what I did, but it was similar to along the lines of the first link's instructions. So why I'm having problems now is beyond me. Dot net framework 1.1 is very important to what I need to do, and I would really really appreciate if someone could help me before I poke my eyes out in frustration over this!

I experienced endless WinUpdate update issues with .net framework on my W2K
pc - but so far none with Vista Ultimate.
I just ran 2 'Important' Vista WinUpdates - a hotfix and an update for .net
framework 3.5 SP1 - no problems.
However - it occurs to me that I never got a firm idea just how important
..Net Framework is to the average user like myself who's much less a PC
enthusiast than I was almost 20 years ago & primarily today more an email
and news junkie. So I checked out what Wikipedia posts on Net Framework -
and except for nerdy gobbledygook - got precisely no idea just how important
..NET Framework is to me.
May I ask a MS knowledgeable or other professional person to help me
understand 'just how important' for a user like me? If WinUpdate indicates
it's not 'essential' - than what exactly do I lose, if anything, by
uninstalling .NET Framework?

I have had recent trouble with my .Net. Specifically with QuickBooks not
opening up.
I called them, they said it was my .Net framework that was incorrect. We
deleted it and reinstalled it.
Now, of course, I cannot open other programs - the error message is that I
need to install one of the following: V1.1.4322 or V1.1.3705
A. WHERE are these versions available to download.
B. Is there possibly another version that will take care of this whole mess.
I have tried to find a number to contact you people but you are very
unavailable.

I just got Expression Web V3. It tells me I don't have .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installed. When I download the .NET SP1 from MS it installs about half way then says an error was detected and unwinds everything. The error box says "see Error Log". What error log? where? When I click on it, MS Visual Studio 2008, it comes up but has its own error box "file cannot be opened because it is being used by another application". Talk about frustrating!
I reinstalled/repaired .NET 3.5 it went fine -- at least no errors reported.
Besides Visual Studio 2008, I show
..NET Component Framework 1.0 SP3 developer
..NET Component Framework 2.0 SP2
..NET Component Framework 3.5
..NET Framework 3.5
Really could use some suggestions here as I just want to get Ex Web 3.0 going.

Everytime I try to open a game or something requiring .NET Framework I get this error message:
To run this application you need to install one of the following applications: .NET Framework v2.0.50727
I already installed this, and it errored, and it did not appear on my add/remove so I couldn't uninstall it. So I tried deleting it manually through the Framework folder, which Vista won't allow me permission to do. So i did the next best thing and ripped it out onto my desktop. I tried to reinstall and the installer claims that 2.0.5 is already installed, and I can't even reinstall 1.0 or 1.1 because it errors, and I can't install 3.5 because it thinks there's a prior version. So now i'm stuck with three folders on my desktop I can't delete, no .NET Framework and seemingly no way of getting it.

Unhandled exception error has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately. The detailed report is appended. It will be seen that .NETFrameworkv2.0 is involved. When I skip the message the program runs but a similar warning (not shown here) is repeated with nothing achieved.
This incident follows a skirmish fought on my system between .NET Framework 3.5 and .NET Framework 3.0 following the installation of Nero 9.0.9.4 and Nuance OmniPage 17 during which I ended up with both .NET 3.5 and 3.0 installed, as neither package would install with 3.5 alone. I am wondering whether I now also need to install .NET Framework 2.0. Ideally I suppose I am seeking a .NET environment that will cope with everything that is thrown at it. Is it OK to have multiple versions of .NET installed concurrently? Perhaps I should just backup and then edit the icon overlay? Where would that be? (I have icon editor IcoFX 1.6.4)......

I am having problems with my sidebar, and I think with IE as well. It all started when I uninstalled McAfee from my system. When I had it installed, it would freeze my entire computer in seconds, so I uninstalled it. After that my sidebar never worked right again. The gadgets show up, but not correctly. My weather app just had a white box with a little blue "i" in the corner. My analog clock would just have a black face and a red second hand at 12 o'clock that never moved.
I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the gadgets, but with no luck. I have tried a few command prompt .dll commands that I have read in forums, but that didn't help. I read it might be an issue with IE8, so I downgraded to IE7, but that still didn't help. I love the sidebar and want to use it again, but nothing I do works! I also have an issue with my IE7.
I tried to sign up for these forums, but the image verification box wouldn't show up until i tried it in Firefox. I use a browser called Slimbrowser (which is based on IE I believe) and I would like to continue using it, but it may be linked to my IE problem.

I have lenovo Y550 laptop with vista home premium installed in it. Recently I tried installing many CD/DVD emulator softwares like 'daemon tools' and 'Win CD emulator' which din't worked in my 64 bit system, so I uninstalled them. After this everytime when I triy accessing my pendrive my system just hangs. So, I installed Microsoft's 'fix it' software. It said that there is some problem with some 'APFB3097 IDE controller' and that it can't repair it. When I opened Device manager I saw that driver under storage controller menu. One thing I observed is that, the code which appears before IDE controller is random. It keeps on changing sometimes. Also when I am in safe mode it vanishes and my all my pendrives work as well.
