every operation requires UAC and a password (why?) under a domain. when trying to disable the uac i get: the requested operation requires elevation tried to elevate CMD but still get this message: the requested operation requires elevation. i can't login locally because i don't have the user password. any change to get this message out the way?

The details of the repair is of root causes 1 and all the error codes are 0x0 The last sentence it says Root causes found:- Boot status indicate that the OS booted successfully Reading throiugh this forum I also do a scannow at c:>sfc /scannow but it gives me a message that "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation" Just wonder what can I do next to get my vista going as it is still giving me the black screen with the mouse arrow.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just formatted my laptop, and I no longer have elevation prompts. Before formatting, I looked up how to get the elevation prompts and found a command that I entered in the cmd window, which automatically set the elevation prompts.
Does anyone know what this command is? I have tried the regedit method (it worked but I still didn't have permissions to just change the name of a certain folder for some reason, [before formatting, it worked perfectly, but through the one-time command entered in the cmd window]) and there is no secpol.msc in home premium.
My user is an administrator, but it doesn't have the full administrative features. Before formatting I could do anything by entering the "Real" administrator password.
I run the installation and everything is going fine until I get an error message saying "windows cannot install requested files the files could be corrupt or missing error code 0x80070017" I'm using vista home 64 bit.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just removed DVD drive from ASUS R1E laptop and plugged in extra battery pack and after I plugged in USB portable hard drive WD Passport Vista now requires activation. I use this system for about 1 year and I used it in exactly the same configuration before. OS says that there was a hardware change and now I need to activate OS within 3 days. The only difference from previous config is that now I have connected receiver for US wireless Microsoft keyboard and mouse and 4 port USB hub. I also changed power plan to conserve battery power and at that moment Vista shown activation message in tray. Is there a limitation how many USB devices in total can I plug in? I think I may have used about 10 - 15 different devices including USB flash memory.What can I do to revert the activation request? I don't have any other product key, but the original one that came with the laptop.

Than, (after 1. installing latest Windows Vista upgrades, and 2. installing and viewing the latest FreshUI but not making any changes), IE would only run if I Rt clicked and selected RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR. If I only Left clicked the IE window would open, and then quickly (1-2 sec) close again.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have the following problem which cannot fix for a few weeks now and growing increasingly frustrated: Sending emails always generates the following message: 'some errors occurred while processing the requested tasks'. The message then stays in the outbox and the contents of message are deleted. I then need to delete the message which goes into the deleted items folder.
However, the email does actually get sent which I've verified by i) checking on send server of gmail and ii) sending/blind copying myself which comes into Windows mail inbox in the normal way. I would greatly welcome advice on how to remove the error message such that outbox messages automatically go to the sent folder rather than generating the error message and the message contents completely disappearing.
The only workaround is to bcc myself on outgoing mail so that I have a record of what I have sent from WM which then appears in the inbox with the text intact. As background, I have installed the Vista and WMutil patch and run all the checks and tabs to no avail. I have had AVG anti-virus installed for over 1 year. The problem manifests itself consistently in different countries and for both ADSL and wireless so i've discounted this as an ISP issue.
I have a bit of weird problem. My step-brother's laptop keeps telling him his version of Vista is not genuine. And yes I'm telling the truth, it really is my step-brother with the problem, and not just me using him as a scapegoat to save my e-pride . But anyway I told him a thousand times to look for help online, but every time he just answers with something nonsensical like "No I shouldn't have to. Bill Gates should just make better hardware." And I'm just like there are so many things wrong with that statement I don't know where to start. So I decided to make the topic for him since him complaining about it nonstop won't fix it. I'll provide as much info as I can, but I'm not sure if it'll prove useful. It would be much better if he would just make a topic, so he could go into more detail but it's not like he listens to me.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have used programs from MSDOS to Vista and by far Vista is the worst program of the lot. Maybe I am doing something wrong. Without exception, everytime I attempt to open a window, it takes for ever for the progress bar at the bottom to fillup and more often than not, I have to give up and start over. It is like it is stuck in a perpetual loop and just can't finish the requested task. I am paying for a cable modem and getting dial up results with Vista. This is fleecing of America. I recently had to purchase a new laptop and of course it had Vista. If the service pack does ever come and does not fix the issues with this crappy program, I would be in favor of filing a class action suit for Microsoft to either fix the issues or replace the program with XP which was great.

It would not run and requested that I increase Windows Virtual RAM! Task Manager shows RAM with Total=2939MB, Cached=2080MB, and Free=20MB. My first guess is that the problem has to do with having an administrator and five standard users, four of whom are minimum-user kids and should be removed (along with the kids).

UPnP service and SSDP service is set to auto on the XP box. The folder is shared publicly on the network, not just local. Vista seems to think that it needs authentication to access the file. How could I disable this. password protection is already disabled.

When I click the Send/Receive button, a Windows Security pop-up appears and requires me to logon to my account. This has never happend before. Any info I put into the username and password do not log me on to my own mail. What gives? I have owned this machine for just over one year.

View 6 Replies View RelatedThis is regarding a desktop using Vista Home Premium and a laptop using Vista Home Premium. A shared printer is attached to the desktop. I've spent more than a few hours of researching on the internet, including the technet information for Vista file/print sharing. I have enabled file and print sharing without using a password on a private network. I have Xp machines on my home network. I am able to access them with no issues.
My issue is that when I access my Vista Home Premium desktop from the Vista Home Premium laptop (or vice versa), I have to enter a username. Any letter of the alphabet works, a password is not required. My desktop is a dual boot system. The other OS is XP Home. It does not require a username for file/print sharing................
My Norton Anti Virus 2008 requires SP2 on my XP system before I can install it. From the Microsoft site, I start to download SP2. All goes well 'till I get a message saying the installation can't be completed, and everything is being un-installed. I get no reason or error message. Fortunatly my system works after the un-install. how I can go forward with SP2. I need to get the Anti Virus definitions up-to-date.

Suddenly, when I get emails in Outlook containing hyperlinks, clicking on any links, an error message appears saying "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer.
I have User Account Control switched off. Using Hotmail via Internet Explorer does not have the same problem. Hyperlinks can be opened. Nor is there any other similar problem on my other computer. The only workaround, which is a little daft, is to forward the message with the hyperlink to an email account on another computer, or to my Hotmail account on the same computer.
I have tried all the Options offered in Outlook, and tried to find anything available via Control Panel, but I can't find any reason for this.
Does anyone know of a list of unnecessary services that can be turned off without harm--and speed up startup/opeation? I already have done a TrueImage restore one time and do not want to go through it again.

I found several KB articles and comments in this and other forums and tried the various fixes - none work - each is a pre-SP1 fix. My Vista system is: Factory Installed Vista Home Premium 64 bit SP1 with all updates on Gateway 4 core processor and less than three months in use.
PROBLEMS:
1) Attempting to run Backup at the point where the settings are to be saved. KB 939615 - Cannot change the settings for a file backup operation or use the Windows Task Scheduler to change the defrag schedule in WIndows VIsta. Transaction Manager Fix - 0x80071a91 error. Recommended fix is: fsutil resource setautoreset true c:
2) Attempting to delete a task Transaction support within the specified file system resource manager is not started or was shutdown due to an error. (0x80071A91)
3) Attempting to link to on-line error message from the event viewer. Clicking on "on-line event" closes the event manager snap-in
Msesage: Unhandled Exception in Managed Code Snap-n - HRESULT 0x80071A19. "This snap-in performed a non-valid operation and has been unloaded- Exception type: Syustem.Runtime.Interop.Services.comexception - HRESULT 0x80071a91."
A fourth problem may or may not be related - when I try to start Wsearch (Windosw Indexing Services) it stops within 3-5 seconds with the error msgs - 0x80040d23, 0x8007007e (VSS) finally 0x80071a91.and Events ID 1008, 1015, 1004 and 1008.
I have seen many comments on the net about a problem when clicking on hyperlinks in Outlook email or tables in Word, a message comes up "The operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer" I have admin rights and have tried all sorts to find out why this is happening without success.
View 7 Replies View RelatedInstalled Vista 64 Home Premium SP1 OEM on Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5, and the computer immediately began to download and install 40 updates via "auto update". These updates did not affect the operability of Vista, HOWEVER the 2nd group of "updates" (there were like 4-5) completely disabled my onboard NIC drivers and I could no longer connect to the internet. There were no updated NIC drivers on the Gigabyte website for the motherboard. I used "System Restore" but the system would not allow the NIC drivers to be reinstalled.
This is TOTALLY unacceptable when you are obligated to download "Auto-Updates" and then they require a complete reinstall of the OS to repair the damage caused by the "Update". I was forced to completely reinstall Vista 64 SP1. I allowed the first 40 updates to install, then I disabled "auto updates". Anyone else have this problem? Unfortunately, I was unable to determine exactly which module created the problem - but I tried "uninstalling" the top five "updates" on the "installed updates" list but could not get the system to allow the NIC drivers to initialize/install.
Is there any way to copy and paste or drag and drop operation like it was in previous Windows? It drives me nuts when I have to type the full path of executable I want to run in that window!
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a network share setup b/w a Vista Ultimate x32 and XP machines. Using the XP machine, I open the Vista hosted share but found some files "missing", ie. even though they physically exist in the Vista machine, I simply cannot see them from XP. Turns out that these files are missing the EVERYONE in the File Permissions (right click file, properties, security).
These are files downloaded using Firefox, and whether they are JPG, AVI, TXT, DOC, XLS they are all missing the EVERYONE permission. If I download the same files using Internet Explorer, the files get created with the EVERYONE permission. My current workarounds ... which none are desirable are this: - Use Internet Explorer- Add EVERYONE permission for each file manually (you have to do this one by one, can't select multiple files and perform bulk operation) - Use CMD line utilities like takeown and icacls. Note this is a secure home network, and while file sharing using EVEYRONE isn't the safest way to do this, I can finetune this later. The key problem at hand is what I've described above. FireFox create files with the full permissions, same way IE does.
Back up stopped working. Got the error message "Cannot find the sector requested.(0x8007001B)". I saw one reply that said to backup to C drive, but this is not an option on the setup page for backup. What next?

I've been unable to find this primitive operation. I'm willing to give up search control to Vista for local drives, but indexing our entire network, and each and every USB stick/USB Hard drive seems, well, silly for the once or twice a month I need to search in those locations. I'm willing to wait the thirty seconds it takes to search, because I can normally limit the size of the search ("Let me look through the code tree for December", for example).
