How To Divide Screen Into Multiple Screens / Desktops?

Dec 9, 2008

using the short-cut target line in XP I could set games to run in window or at a different resolution. How do I do this in Vista? More Specifically I want to run Atlantica Online in smaller res than 1024x768 so I can leave I running in the background but still keep an eye on it while i surf the net (a small resolution like 640x480 would be ideal). I tried editing the target line with no success. Any ideas?

If the above is impossible are there any third party programs that would allow me to resize the window how I want? Or allow me to divide my screen into multiple screens/desktops?

Sep 30, 2009

With xp you can press control/alt/delete to get a login screen up then login using the administrator account. On vista the administrator account is showing as a icon on the login screen. I dont want this to be visible, any ideas how to hide this?. I saw a registry hack but this removes the icon but it seems in doing so there is then no way to login without the icon.

Two Desktops Running At Once

Jan 19, 2010

I somehow really messed things up. I have two of the exact same desktops running together. When you click on the Start button and you see the desktop name, they are listed as the exact same name, one under the other. In Windows explorer under the desktop name, the name of the second desktop appears in alphabetical order in the same directory as Documents, Downloads, Favorites, etc. The path for this second exact desktop is c:users. how to get rid of this desktop. Everytime I try to delete it, it says it is open (because of course it is a mirror copy of what I am running).

Desktop Switcher (allows To Switch Between Two Or More Desktops)

Jun 12, 2009

At first I have to say that I'm not looking for a desktop switch, which switches between two or more desktops with windows on it.

I am looking for a application which allows to switch between two or more desktops. With "desktop" i simply mean the wallpaper with the desktop icons on it.

Mine is very overcrowded and so I searched for a solution that allows to adapt my workplace to the thing I'm doing. If I'm programming i want links to all my compilers and tools, if I'm gaming I want all my games at the desktop.

Change The Theme On Both Users Desktops..

Jun 28, 2008

I am having trouble applying themes in Vista. I have two user accounts set up. I am using third party software to do it (Desktop Architect). I can use Desktop Architect just fine to apply the theme on the main user's desktop. However, when I try to use Desktop Architect to apply the theme on the other user's desktop, every thing in the theme shows up fine (icons) but the desktop background picture doesn't show up. It's just black. I found out that I can fix this by right clicking on the desktop, selecting Personalize, then Themes and then select My Current Theme and clicking on apply. After that, the picture shows up just fine. However, I want to use Desktop Architect alone to change the theme on both users desktops. I don't know why it works fine for one but not the other.

Multiple Desktops, Nested Array Of 'Desktop'

Mar 14, 2009

The problem is that he has many many desktop folders. Under his user folder he has a Desktop folder. Click on that and there's a folder called Desktop. Click on that and another. This goes on and on for perhaps 30+ times. Worse there is another called Desktop1, with a nested array of 'Desktop' folders below. Worse still Windows Vista won't let you delete any of these because their filenames are too long. It won't let you move their location either to condense/combine them for the same reason. I don't know when the problem started or why.

Multiple Desktops, Separate Paths, Same Account

Mar 29, 2009

I've managed to create two (or more?) desktops (not just shortcut icons or copies). I don't know How, or When, so experimenting with "restore" times is kind of a moot point. One I assume is at the regular path, accessible through "my computer" on the left hand side under "folders". I can't get it's exact path because if I right-click on it and go to "properties" it opens up "Control Panel>Personalization". Opening the "desktop" via that path shows the icons/shortcuts I currently have on my "visual desktop". ("Visual Desktop = the desktop I see on my screen). If I add a new folder to my "Visual Desktop", this is where it shows up, not in any of the following locations.

Another one is accessible through my user account name after I open up "computer" under desktop (path: C:Users*username). The files shown here are various shortcuts, none of which are actually on my "visual desktop"..........

Improve Multi-Tasking With Virtual Desktops

Aug 27, 2008

Microsoft’s Windows Sysinternals group has released a new virtual desktop utility called Desktops.  If you have used virtual desktops on *nix or spaces on OS X you will feel right at home with Sysinternals Desktops.

For those of you that are new to virtual desktops, they are a great way to organizing your work and help you multi-task better.

Running Sysinternals Desktops is like having 4 monitors with 4 different desktops that you can have different windows or applications open on. You can easily switch between the desktops with your mouse or shortcut keys. I like to break up my tasks on different desktops. For example, I have Outlook open on virtual desktop 1 and my web developer apps like Dreamweaver and Photoshop open on desktop 2. When I am switching between different tasks I can just switch my current desktop view instead of minimizing and maximizing windows. This allows me to quickly switch between tasks without losing my window locations and setups.

After you download Sysinternals Desktops and run it you will see a new icon in the system tray that looks like 4 blocks. If you click on the icon you will see a preview of what you have open on each desktop....

'remove Media And Press Any Key To Restart'

Apr 28, 2010

Here's the deal. I've been working on this laptop for a client for 3 days now, and I swear I've read every forum out there, so I apologize in advance for any headaches I may cause here. As the title says, it's an Acer 6930 with Vista Home Premium. When I boot to normal mode, it gets to the 'Welcome' screen, and the little spinning circle just sits and spins. The client said they actually let it sit like that for 2 days and it still did nothing. Boot to safe mode - BSOD, generally with 'Page Fault in Non Paged Area', but sometimes others as well. (Sorry I did not jot any of them down).

Boot to BartPE thumb drive - 'remove media and press any key to restart' Boot into 'repair your computer' - Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically. "Windows cannot repair this computer automatically. If you have recently attached a device to this computer, such as a camera or portable music player, remove it and restart your computer. If you continue to see this message, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance. Hardware tests pass - memory and hard drive both come up clean.

Client doesn't have the Vista install disk, so I tried to D/L one last night, and apparently I got a bad image, because even in my other machine, the dvd is showing empty, so I am SOL on a Vista disk until I try to D/L another. I've checked out several forums as I said, and followed a lot of their instructions to no avail. I have also had the drive out and hooked to another machine, and ran Malwarebytes on it. The scan literally took 13 hours and found nothing wrong. I have also ran chkdsk and it fixed some bad sectors, but that's about it. SFC /scannow from the recovery area/cmd prompt says there is a repair pending and that a reboot is required, and you can reboot all day long and it will always tell you that. So, grab some aspirin after reading all that, get a coffee, smoke 'em if ya got 'em, and then let me know if you have any suggestions short of a 12 gauge at 20 yards.

This Copy Of Windows Is Not Genuine: Cannot Exit Unless I Press OK

Dec 15, 2008

Almost every time I turn on my laptop and log into my account a screen comes up saying something along the lines of Thank You For Validating Windows. This takes up the whole screen and I cannot exit unless I press OK. After my desktop is fully loaded a message comes up saying that Windows Aero has stopped working, you may be a victim of counterfeiting. There is then a link which takes me to Genuine Microsoft Software. I then run the validation test and pass. Also sometimes there is a message in white writing in the corner of my desktop which says:

Windows Vista (TM)

Build 6001

This copy of Windows is not genuine. My Vista Ultimate is 100% genuine.

NTLDR Is Missing Press CTRL+Alt+Del To Restart?

Oct 24, 2009

About a month ago, my laptop (with vista as OS) started acting up, giving me error messages such as ?windowssystem32ootwinload.exe missing or corrupt? as well as ?windowssystem32stsem missing?. I tried everything I could in vain, and I decided to go ahead and format my hard drive, through another computer using an enclosure kit since I couldn?t even get into safe mode or any other mode without getting the error screen right away. I seemed that the problem was getting worst as I restarted my computer.

As I mentioned above, I formatted my disc, thus lost all data, hoping to be able to install a clean version of VISTA. I reinstall my hard drive in the laptop, and just to make a quick test, I started the computer without the VISTA DVD in and I got the error ?NTLDR is missing Press CTRL+Alt+Del to restart?, and wondering what that was about, I looked it up on the internet, and most people seemed to say that error message was a typical windows XP type of error. But I never had XP on.......

Disk Boot Failure "INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"

May 9, 2009

I changed the Boot sequence to CD first, then HDD. Everything ran fine and vista seemingly loaded perfectly. After moving some files from my backup drive back onto my main one and installing some drivers, I was asked to restart my computer (for the drivers) so I did. Remembering that the boot sequence was still set on CD first, and since my driver CD was still in the drive, I decided to set the boot sequence back to the way I had it with XP: HDD and then CD. After doing this I quit BIOS and tried to boot, but I kept getting a message saying: DISK BOOT FAILURE. INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER.

So I restarted the computer again, this time with my Vista CD in the drive, and again, the computer wouldn't boot and told me to enter a boot disk. Not knowing what to do, I went back into BIOS and changed the boot sequence back to CD first, then HD. After doing this, and restarting with the Vista CD in the drive, my computer booted up with no problems whatsoever. I tried reinstalling Vista (twice), reformatting the target hard drive, changing the boot sequence around, pretty much everything I could think of......
