How Can Vista X64 Auto Repair Work
Apr 20, 2009
I should probably know the answer to this one, but I periodically run scannow on vista x64, vista x86, and xp mce 2005 computers.Usually auto repair works. Recently, on the mce 2005 computer I have begun to get requests to insert the XP Professional SP3 cd's. Can I get around this? If not, can I get cd's from MS for free or a nominal cost?

I open my computer and right mouse click on DVD drive and go to prosperities and there is only 5 tabs and the auto play is missing. So my LG DVD won't boot up an auto play. So if my computer crasher I won't be able to put in my Vista DVD and boot up to fix it. Anyone knows anything about this? I put a Emprex DVD in and it boots up auto play where I can click on the auto play and go from there but there still isn't an auto play tab on the property of my computer.

I have a Hp Pavilion notebook with Vista Home Premium. The PC boots fine, but when I log in to the user account with the password the screen turns all white.
I also tried in safe mode and in safe mode as soon as I put in the password in the screen turns all black. It says "safe mode" in the corners and the top of the screen says:
"Microsoft® Windows® (Build 6001:Service Pack1)"
You can move the mouse pointer around but there is nothing to click on and the screen remains black.
I came across this forum and I followed the instructions in the tutorials on fixing Vista.
First I tried How to Do a Startup Repair in Vista and it said it was unsuccessful.
Next, I followed the directions from "How to Do a System Restore in Vista" and it said " no restore point have been created on this computer's system disk"
Now I am trying "How To Perform a Repair Installation For Vista"
but when I get to "step 10. Click on the Upgrade option" the upgrade option is greyed out.
Why am I not given the "upgrade option" and what should I do now?

I have an Acer Extensa laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium installed. Its been working great for over a year now untill yesterday when all of a sudden it wouldn't boot up properly. It continued to go to start-up repair, but that kept on failing. After trying all other tools, (system restore had no restore points for some odd reason)... I tried safe mode. That did not work. It instead went back to the start-up repair screen. The same warning message popped up everytime it failed "Cannot repair automatically, click finish blah blah blah". When I bought this laptop from Best Buy, I did not recieve any type of Disk for Vista, it was already loaded on there... I would rather not do a clean install.

I have a Dell Inspirion E1505. 1.73ghz core duo, 2 gb Ram, 80gb hdd. I had been running Linux on my laptop. It ran fine. I decided to sell the laptop and realized I'd have to re-install the Vista OS that came with the computer. After a successful install and the downloading of all updates, including SP1, I noticed a problem when I attempted to change my power options. When I clicked on the drop down menu, it showed me all the options, I chose what I wanted and when it retracted, it went through every option and then settled on the one at the top of the list. It did this numerous times. I then clicked on set to default and that worked. I had downloaded spybot search and destroy and attempted to install it. When it came to the select language portion, it was on Afrikaans (top of the list), I attempted to change it to english and it would quickly rotate through all the languages and stop on Afrikaans, again, numerous times. I googled the problem to no avail. I then figured that one of the updates had a corrupted file or something and restored the syatem to the very first point, again to no avail. I then decided to do a repair install, that didn't work. I then decided to do a complete re-install, when I get to the set the time and date,I choose Eastern Standard Time and it then rotates through all the choices in seconds and stops at the very top one. I am Lost and could sure

I got a virus which I was successfully able to remove from my system but now Windows Media Player doesn't work. Clicking yes just takes me to their website where there isn't a version of WMP for Vista, only for XP. From what I've found there isn't a way to reinstall WMP for Vista. Is there a way to repair this error?

I have lots of bad sectors and not even able to do a restore to a previous restore point. I tried chkdsk/f but on restart it doesn't do the chkdsk. I have a Vista repair disk and I ran the repair but I still have the sector errors that prevent going to the previous restore point.

My computer freezes from time to time and I think I tried everything to locate what the problem could be. The event logs show nothing, I ran a memory test with no problem, (I have 4Gb), I checked my drive and had no problems. All my drivers are up to date and I have all the latest updates/service packs. So my last hope is to re-install Vista. Are there any easy steps to re-install Vista? Or do I have to format my machine and start from scratch? I don't want to re-install office and so on.

Notebook going in for warranty servicing, replacement of fan.
I wish to store VHP system and Vista setup information on an external HDD.
Has anyone found a freeware or workaround to allow me to save and then restore my Vista settings and programs to a new default install of Vista?
I understand when my notebook is returned with a new fan, VHP will be at factory default status.
Files, documents and the like will already be on a backup HDD via Sync Toy 2.0.
Am more concerned about the Vista setup and other aspects such as Windows Mail. Contacts, Windows Calendar, etc.
Will I have to reinstall all my programs and the like?

I have a PC that had XP pro installed 1st. Then I installed Vista using the dual boot option on the vista DVD. Everything went well and it all worked fine. I've been happily using Vista for months now, and I've not used XP for some time. But now I need to use it, and it won't boot up.
It gets as far as the log in screen. But the keyboard and mouse don't work. (they do during boot up as I can use the keyboard to choose the OS). Same thing in safe mode. How can I repair the XP installation (or do a new one from scratch), with out messing up the Vista installation and keeping the dual boot option.

yesterday i created a new vista dvd with vLite, because my windows folder was too big. after that i tried to do a "repair/upgrade install", like explained in this tutorial - Repair Install For Vista
as it turned out, it went completly wrong. i reinstalled vista on C: and the old version was moved to the folder Windows.old. obviously not that, what i want to accomplish. so now im online with a new user account - "lost" the user settings from my old user account, the programs are not "installed" anymore.
here is a small comparison of my situation:
- on C: i got now a new fresh windows and the old version in the folder in Windows.old
- Windows.old contains:
-- my old user settings
-- my old programms installed on C: (not a big deal, because i installed almost all programms on E: ---> other problem, see below)
-- the old windows folder himself
- as mentioned above i installed almost all programms on E: - obviously they are still there, but they are not "installed" anymore
so here are my key questions:
1. is there an easy was to transfer my old user settings to the new one?
2. is there an easy was to "install" all the programms on E:, without reinstall all per hand? eg. about registry import or something like that...
i hope it is clear, what my problems are - english is not my native language...

each time I boot my Vista PC the system is very slow to establish a connection to the network. How do I go about troubleshooting this problem? I have a SOHO network config. One Vista PC, one W2K3 server on the network. Verizon supplied FIOS router gets me on the internet. The network runs great once it is connected. When I click diagnose and repair on the network icon the result is a "cant repair the problem" answer.

I have been wracking my brain for weeks now, trying to play C&C First Decade with Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge over the LAN, it will only run on IPX networking which I could setup with 2x XP machines, I have Vista Ultimate on my PC, and XP on another, I found some drivers for IPX to work on Vista, didn't work ... So I loaded Hamachi which had built-in IPX support. Now when I open RA2, it no longer says IPX unavailable, it shows 00 00 00...
So it can see my Hamachi adapter with IPX support, great! The other XP machine has Hamachi installed, and they are both VPN'd (Connected) on the same Hamachi Network. They don't see each other... The XP machine shows a few IPX networks, I have tried switching to them all, even put the Hamachi adapter and the LAN adapter to the top of the preferred networks list. This was sort-of a breeze with both XP, but with Vista it's looking to be a bit tricky. I have no firewalls running on either machine and I am pretty cluey when it comes to networking (TCP/IP that is).

My eight year old Dell finally bit the dust and bought a new Gateway preloaded with Norton AV. I have a paid subscription through 01/09 with Windows One Care that I have used for three years with my Dell and never had problems with it. I have always disliked the hoggy Norton and McAfee AV's and will uninstall Norton on the new pc using the uninstall download from Symantec and probably some manual removal as well.
My question is : will WOC work with Vista?? Or should I use some of the free AV's ie Avast, AVG free, etc etc. My pc is only two days old and I don't want to spend days attempting to download new programs and fight with firewalls and potentially messing up new pc.

I have tried everything possible to get my HP PSC 500 to work with Vista, I had no problems with XP. The driver is there, but it presents an error when I go to print. I have contacted HP and they tell me because my machine, which is in perfect working condition, is 5 yrs old it will not work with Vista. I find this totally unacceptable and would like to find a solution to this other than spending more money unneccessarily to get a 2nd printer that I don't want

I've been dealing with this horrendous excuse for an email program for about 2 months now (thus my display name. my new computer came with Home Premium VISTA. I'm seriously thinking of getting my old original copy of XP installed back in my computer at some point. I'd do it myself, but I want to make sure I don't lose anything in the process. I've lost enough because of this fiasco already.
1) I can no longer use a rather expensive program that I bought to build web sites for small businesses (so therefore this also had a direct impact on my income as well as my frustration level). It won't work with Windows VISTA (because it's not a Microsoft product, of course).
2) I receive most email, but I have to check the spam folder constantly -- since I work online from home, and receive a good bit of business email at home that will often contain links, etc., VISTA reads it as "phishing" email and dumps it. And some it seems to dump in there for absolutely no reason at all...........

i'd like to put my shadow copies on a different disk. anyone know how? details: event log tells me that shadow copies are having trouble finding space, and getting deleted. my intuition tells me a shadow on its own volume sounds incestuous. better on a different disk. just like pagefile. searching, i found vssadmin add shadowstorage /for=c: /on=t: /maxsize=10g but it doesn't work on vista sp1. what's that about? perhaps it's in the registry somewhere? anyone know...?

Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I understand my ISP only uses IPv4 - Virgin Media Anyway, name resolution does not work in Vista. I operate a LAN behind a router - GTA GNAT 3.42.This is merely a debian linux router kernel with features like HA (high availability et al). I use a PIII Coppremine, 512MB, CompactFlashCard with linux image, 3Com 10/100 PCI on the public interface, 4 Port SMC 10/100 and 2 Port Intel Pro/100. I have no problems with Win2K and Win XP Pro. I can ping and tracert domain name(s) with no problems (Win2K/WinXP);
Unable to do this in Vista.Disabled Vista Firewall for testing. Disabled (unchecked) IPv6 and discovery components on network connection. Disabled IPv6 in registry with DisableComponents FF patch i.e. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSet Services cpip6Parameters Disabled IPHelper service in services. Disabled DNSClient in services (to eliminate cache issues).Tried another NIC in the PC, a 3Com with correct drivers.Still cannot resolve domain names but get IP addr etc. Removed 3Com NIC. Onboard NIC - nVidia - Vista installed nVidia driver at install. As boths NIC fail DNS resolution, assumed not a NIC issue. Network Type - Workgroup (not connected to domain)....
