i have just moved from XP to Vista and i like most everything but Office , all i want to do is print but it just seems so complicated , it automatically goes to One Note , and to print something of the Internet say if you booked flights and you want to print the details again seems so complicated , it's i know probably i haven't configured properly but it's very frustrating with XP i just clicked print and that was it ,
View 4 RepliesMy 2 new vista laptops won't see either the network set up at home or my office (both as 'OFFICE') or vice versa. I downloaded the LLTD and it's made not one jot of difference..Been through the sharing etc. *The 2 lappys see eachother BTW*I downloaded network magic demo on one laptop and the main PC at home and appears the network is correct as they both see eachother . (it even sees the one laptop which hasn't got NM on it) I must say I'm kinda disappointed that Vista and XP are not properly configured to automatically 'see' eachother and have to resort to a 3rd party to do so?
That aside I have three options
1 Dump Vista (my current fav ;-)
2 Solve this problem
3 Buy NM for home/work
If anyone has any input I'd love to see if no/ 2 can be cracked!
I'e been using my new PC with Windows x64 Ultimate SP1. I'm very happy with it, I haven't run into any problems with it and everything is running smoothly. I'd like to know what are the major tweaks I should do to improve performance even more. I'm concerned more about performance than anything. I've also noticed that there is a lot of disk access, even after shutting down the indexing service. Mainly, I'd like to know what services are safe to turn off. In XP I knew what to disable, in Vista a lot of things have changed. Also what is a good Pagefile size for a system with 8b of ram? I mostly use my PC for photo editing (Photoshop and Lightroom), and for playing a few games, Crysis and Live For Speed. I consider my hard fast enough, and it runs very fast for me. But I am the kind of person that wants to disable anything that I don't use to get that bit of extra performance.

Okay not really but you get that I don't care much for XP, right?. I've always used linux as long as I remember too (****e I've used everything over the years - Atari, Amiga, Commodore..), and I actually abandoned XP for Ubuntu, save for playing games. I love Ubuntu! But, I must say using Vista 64 now for about a month I actually *like it*. There are a bit of things Mac OS could stea.. err borrow. Like Readyboost. I found a 2 pack of PNY 4 gig drives on sale for $25 at staples a few weeks ago, so I snagged them to use for readyboost. It's fantastic, Firefox is loaded and displaying the home page before I even release the damn mouse button. ..................
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just acquired what seems to be a really old PCIe ATI card that I can't seem to install correctly. I went to the ATI support site and the drivers for the card just don't seem to work. Is there a specific order to follow when installing a GPU -- sorry, its been a while. It doesn't go into a PCI slot but its the bigger one, looks like a big ole' AGP card but it has a sticker right on the card that says PCIe. I can only find the drivers for a Radeon HD2600XT and I'm not sure if those are the correct drivers or not. When I first installed it everything went well and it installed correctly but the XP hardware wizard wasn't satisfied. So it doesn't fully install -- note, I do not have the original discs -- but just need the most up to date drivers.

It take almost 30-40 mins to complete all the above process and till it asks me for LOGIN/PASSWORD screen. It does not happen all time when I reboot. I am working on moving over to Windows Vista, in hopes of going officially to Windows 7. I know I should be checking for Windows 7 but I have a full Vista Ultimate 64Bit. I have most of my devices configured but I do not seem to get my GVC modem to install. It is based off a Conexant processor and XP was able to use a "generic" Conexant driver.

I am using Windows Mail with Gmail's IMAP configured. I've configured it in Windows Mail as per the directions in the Gmail web site. Regardless, I get this error message every time I try to check my Gmail:

I found out that the issue was caused by a conflict between the wireless driver and the sound card. I tried to install the Broadcom Wireless Adapter update, thinking that would fix it? and somehow during the process I uninstalled my Broadcom Wireless Driver? I then went into the device manager and clicked on my Broadcom Wireless adapter and clicked on "update driver software". It runs a search and then tells me that my driver is up to date.
The Device Staus is: This device cannot start. (Code 10): The Driver Version is 4.170.25.19 10/26/2007
but when I try to connect to a wireless network, It tells me "the network adapter "broadcom 802.11n network adapter" is experiencing driver or hardware related issues. Please don't waste our time with comments like "ditch the Mac and get a real computer"
I have an HP Photosmart C6180 connected via USB to an XP desktop computer. I have other XP laptops set up so they can print to this printer throught their wireless connection. However I now have a new Vista laptop and I can't get it configured for this printer through it's wireless connection. Here is what I've tried: Go into Control panel/printers on the Vista Laptop and select Add New printer. I select Network printer and It finds the printer. I then select HP as the manufacturer and it list lots of their printers but not this one. I assume the driver was just not included with Vista. This also has a "have disk" option but my disk is only for XP and before.
I went to HP's site and downloaded the latest complete Vista driver (159 meg). I then ran the software install and when it asks for whether it is a local or network printer, I pick network. But the driver software can't find any network printers even thought Vista could in 1 above. 3. I went to HP's site and downloaded the latest complete Vista driver (159 meg) only this time I saved it instead or running it. Then from the Vista Laptop and selected Add New printer. I select Network printer and It finds the printer. This also has a "have disk" option so I point it to the saved download file but it won't accept it. Apparently this is because the downloaded file is an exe and the software at that point is looking for in ..inf file. So how can I get this to work?
Anyone had any experience bypassing BitLocker (basic mode) using the recovery console (i.e., booting to the Windows DVD or rescue CD)? Based on the documentation, seems like it would work (provided BIOS is configured to boot to CD/DVD drive before the HDD). Having said that, would M$ allow such an obvious attack vector? I don't have a machine w/ a TPM right now, so I can't test this myself.

I use a PlayStation 2 USB joystick which has been configured and synced with the PC, so that the every button/joystick works. I am 100% sure that there is not a problem with the joystick, as i use it for other games such as Microsoft Flight Sim X and Test drive unlimited. The analogue sticks and buttons work fine.
i have tried both changing the control setting to keyboard but, once again the problem is still there, the plane doesn't stop spinning out of control...##Is it my controls? My general setting are on default so everything original...i have played around with the setting invert/normal... still the same result

After updating it says to reboot but after rebooting it says "not configured right-reverting".I tried many times to update but i was not lucky.It does not tell any error code.OS is vista ultimate x64 with SP1.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a new motherboard (abit nh-m2sv), X2 +3800 processor, 2 gig pc4200 memory ATI graphics, DVD RW, Maxtor SATA drive, all are suppose to be Vista ready, but vista either won't install, or installs with BSOD's then will only run in Safe Mode. I have tried Home Basic and premium, the same issue, I install my old faitful XP and it goes straight in. I have run memtest, all fine, I have removed the gfx card, no change, I have tried an IDE hdd rather than a SATA no change.
View 6 Replies View RelatedFor the last few days or so I have been having problems with Vista Home Premuim 64bit not shutting down properly or looging off. I click on shut down and then the computer will just hang for a about 5mins and then decide to shut off sometimes or if it does not then the only way I can get it to turn off is by holding the power button in, which I dont really like doing. I have closed all programmes down by the clock on the task bar and the problem is still the same. Do you recommend trying a clean boot? I really want to try and find out where this problem lies as I don't really want to go through another reinstall of Vista.
View 8 Replies View Relatedall started after an update for MS office + gfx driver and then all the problems began, mainly my PC won't start up properly, no signal to any of my monitors, my mouse and keyboard don't work, blue and green lights on my tower running constantly and fans on full. The only way I can get it to boot up properly is to do a hard re-boot(I have to leave it unplugged for at least an hour to do this) and has been like this for almost a fortnight now, I have already tried
1). restoring it to before the update.
2). CHKDSK.
3). repair with installation disk.
4). changing power options.
5). un-installed Microsoft Office.
6).updated to most recent nvidia graphics card drivers.
Can't think of what else at the moment but have been going through the forum and google to no avail.
We recently brought a laptop with Vista Home and have had on going issues with it not shutting down. Everytime we hit shut down it goes to the logging off screen but never actually makes it. We have left it running over night and come down the next morning and its still "logging off"! We have tried the Ctrl Alt Del combination to see whats causing the issues but the task manager doesnt load up. This has been an ongoing issue for about 3 weeks and have probably only had the laptop for a month.
Forceably switching it off, which we have to, causes the safety mode prompt to come on at the next start up. If we do not run the safety mode we arent able to use the internet as it doesnt connect. So, running it in safety mode is the only way to get things back to normal. I should add that when I start up in safety mode it goes to a black screen eventually with "safety mode" written in each corner. Ive no idea how to move away from this so just hit the main off button but we can get back on the net when it reboots.
Having read a few issues with shutting down it doesnt appear that anyone has the ongoing issue we do and as mentioned Ctrl Alt Del does nothing. On the rare occasion we have got it to shut down properly it reverts the next time. We run McAfee anti virus and as a fairly new laptop there isnt much that we have downloaded since purchase. I also have a desktop and never experienced this ongoing issue!
