64 Bit Not Shutting Down Properly

Jul 21, 2009

For the last few days or so I have been having problems with Vista Home Premuim 64bit not shutting down properly or looging off. I click on shut down and then the computer will just hang for a about 5mins and then decide to shut off sometimes or if it does not then the only way I can get it to turn off is by holding the power button in, which I dont really like doing. I have closed all programmes down by the clock on the task bar and the problem is still the same. Do you recommend trying a clean boot? I really want to try and find out where this problem lies as I don't really want to go through another reinstall of Vista.

ATI 2600XT PCIe Card Installed Properly But Not Working Properly

Dec 13, 2009

I just acquired what seems to be a really old PCIe ATI card that I can't seem to install correctly. I went to the ATI support site and the drivers for the card just don't seem to work. Is there a specific order to follow when installing a GPU -- sorry, its been a while. It doesn't go into a PCI slot but its the bigger one, looks like a big ole' AGP card but it has a sticker right on the card that says PCIe. I can only find the drivers for a Radeon HD2600XT and I'm not sure if those are the correct drivers or not. When I first installed it everything went well and it installed correctly but the XP hardware wizard wasn't satisfied. So it doesn't fully install -- note, I do not have the original discs -- but just need the most up to date drivers.

Random Shutting Down

Apr 8, 2009

This happens to me every morning when I turn my computer on after having it off all night.

I turn on my computer. Windows loads then I get a message (as soon as windows is done loading all up) that "Windows will be shutting down in less than a minute."

So it shuts down, restarts, and when it gets back on my User Account Control is turned off. So I turn User Account Control back on and it's fine until the next morning. Sometimes, but not often it will do this after my computer has been Hibernating for a while.

I can publish the project on my computer and burn it onto DVD that way, but i then lose certain features, such as scenes etc.

Blue Screen Then Shutting Off

A couple days ago I had to send my computer in because it kept going to a blue screen then shutting off, and along with that every time I would turn it on, it would skip past where I select a user and put in the password and just use a default administrator user. I got my computer back and they replaced the motherboard and it stopped shutting off but I still cannot choose a user, and when i try to switch users the screen flickers and then nothing happens. I get no error messages or anything.

Shutting Down Computer Walks Into Something Like Sleep

Mar 14, 2008

when I'm trying to shut it down, my computer walks into something like sleep (tho I can't wake it from it) what exactly happens is: my monitor lets "beep" 3 times and goes black (as it usually does when it's turned off), but power LED on monitor stays green (after turning it off should be yellow) on keyboard num lock/caps lock/scroll lock legs keeps blinking power led on PC stays green all fans are working and I hear that HDD has stopped working (at least I think it is)

I've run safe mode and tried to shut it down from there, everything stays exactly same, with one exception monitor doesn't "beep", isn't going black, but stays on "shutting down" screen which is frozen (animation of "work in progress" circle has stopped) rest is as described above..............

TaskManager & Shutting Down Is Worse In Than In WinXP

Jun 10, 2009

1) TaskManager by Alt+Ctrl+Del does not start immediately as opposed to WinXP. Alt=Ctrl+Del first enters a BlueScreen menu and only then you can select TaskManager from menu - an extra click over WinXP, what's the purpose of this moronity? Starting from Command prompt by 'taskmgr" [taskmgr.exe] is not an answer as it requires even more typing.

2) Shutting down & Sleep requires an extra click (or more) over WinXP: If you're a professional, you usually use keyboard heavily rather than slow mouse: In WinXP you Winkey+U+Enter and it shutsdown (or S for sleep).

In retarded Vista you have to go thru a dropdown menu. I don't even mention breaking down good old Appearance applet in Control panel (or rightclick on emapty desktop space-->properties) from tabbed menus into separate applets. Is that designed for morons who get sacred by Tabs? Or to waste more of our time versus WinXP?

If XP wasn't broken & only requires ongoing Security updates, why was it "fixed" with Vista rubbish? Not to mention Vista isn't bulletproof either, security-wise.

This morning it was stuck on 'shutting down' I did a hard reset and restarted in save network mode. After the normal dos info on safe mode setup I got a screen saying 'configuring updates'. After about 15 minutes it went to shutting down and its been over 2 hours shutting down. I have no idea what 'updates' it is trying to install. My guess is whatever came out on Tuesday as I use auto update/download. I am using an older xp machine to write this question. Restart Computer Stuck On Shutting Down

Jul 19, 2008

I tried to restart my computer and it is stuck on shutting down. It did this before and I hardbooted and had to wait over an hour for the computer to come back on. It was not reading my external drive so I hit restart and it is just sitting here doing nothing. I don't like hard booting but don't know how to get out of this. I obviously can't look at my event as I am stuck in shutting down right now. I have a gateway GT5628 quad core. The only stupid thing I did today was go into msconfig and click on tools, disable UAC and launch. It said reboot. My challenges began. do I hard boot or what here?

It shut down totally and then I turned it back on and now the screen is black. It started up but has gone black. don't know if it is working to start or not. It is 26 minutes since I wrote this and my computer is still trying to boot up. It is going through a correct the error routine. I don't know what has changed. I did not upgrade. Home Premium was installed on my computer. I have tons of room. It does not read my external hard drive on last boot up going through the same stuff here. Gateway said just wait it may take an hour. Everytime I boot? What is with that. I can't get into my passport for Microsoft from this computer on the network. This is a fiasco.

Easy Transfer After Shutting Off Pc And Restarting

Jun 24, 2009

i recently bought a new computer, its running Vista (64 bit) Home Premium, and when i first got it i attempted to do an "Easy Transfer" from my old laptop to this new desktop (the laptop was running Vista Home Premium ((32 bit i believe)), not sure if this may have anything to do with the problem)... but anyway, after the Easy Transfer was done, after shutting off my pc and restarting it, upon the windows startup screen the message "incorrect password" pops up first thing before i even try to type in any password o.O ... my pc is secured with a password and if i click ok and then type in the password it works fine, but at start up now every single time the first thing i see is "incorrect password" regardless of the fact that i havnt tried typing in the password yet, and like i said, if i just click ok and type in the password it works fine, so this problem hasnt really been bothering me that much, but i do find it quite odd and was wondering if anyone knew what this could be caused from (its the least of my problems with Vista 64 bit so far btw -_-) .... but yea, ive never seen a vista system show the "incorrect password" message before you even attempt to type the password in at startup haha...

Blue Screen Kept Shutting Down,Internet Also Freeze.

Apr 24, 2009

I have a Compaq Presario CQ50 that was just purchased in November. About a week after we got it, I started getting the dreaded blue screen and it kept shutting down on me. Internet would also freeze. Went round and round with tech support, nothing they did ever seemed to fix the problem, but all of the sudden one day after an automatic Windows update, it was working fine. Fast forward a few months. Started getting some random issues over the last several weeks. Blue screen and Internet freezing again, then keyboard and touchpad stopped working. Tech support had me change some configuration settings in the BIOS and it started working again. The a couple days later, I turned on the system one day and was getting the "unable to start" error and it couldn't ever be fixed. Tech Support did a system restore that got me started, but lots of things were disabled that shouldn't have been and we couldn't get the Internet to work, so he recommended I back up and do a system recovery since something was obviously wrong. Did that, worked fine for about a day, then went to turn it on the other day and got the same "unable to start" again.

This time, it was able to fix it and start. The only program I've added since the recovery was a webdesign program. Had it before as well. Thought I was in the clear, but now I keep getting the Blue Screen and it keeps restarting on me. Then today I went to reinstall my printer and it won't install. During the installation, I get an error message, something about 1% not found win32. Sorry, I should have written it down. I called Tech Support again and they wanted me to send it in, but I absolutely can't do that as I run a business and can't be without it that long. So they told me to take it to Best Buy, which I will, but I'd love to be able to figure this out of my own so I don't have to be without my computer for an extended period of time.

Shutting Off Windows Update Didn't Stop The Freezing

Apr 21, 2009

Pretty much from the word go Vista was locking up hard. Its response to pretty much any problem it encounters is immediately freeze and be unrecoverable. It's not all random and without pattern, however. Initially it was clear that Windows Update was causing an issue. Shutting off Windows Update didn't stop the freezing, but it prevented the system from freezing 100% of the time minutes after the OS loaded up. Trying to update manually did the same thing. I eventually discovered that there is a temp folder I can delete related to updates that will stop this problem, but it only works for a day or two before it goes back to freezing.

Oh, but that's not all... I've been able to figure out a number of specific things that can cause freezes over repeatedly doing them... Sort of. For example:

* If I start up Google Chrome or Firefox within 5 minutes of getting to the desktop, there's a good chance I'll freeze on some random web page.

* A video player made my system freeze. A flash one. One I'd run perfectly fine before. I went to the page, freeze. Restarted. Went back to the page, immediate freeze. Stopped going to that page... Next day that page and that player worked fine..........
