Restart Computer Stuck On Shutting Down
Jul 19, 2008
I tried to restart my computer and it is stuck on shutting down. It did this before and I hardbooted and had to wait over an hour for the computer to come back on. It was not reading my external drive so I hit restart and it is just sitting here doing nothing. I don't like hard booting but don't know how to get out of this. I obviously can't look at my event as I am stuck in shutting down right now. I have a gateway GT5628 quad core. The only stupid thing I did today was go into msconfig and click on tools, disable UAC and launch. It said reboot. My challenges began. do I hard boot or what here?
It shut down totally and then I turned it back on and now the screen is black. It started up but has gone black. don't know if it is working to start or not. It is 26 minutes since I wrote this and my computer is still trying to boot up. It is going through a correct the error routine. I don't know what has changed. I did not upgrade. Home Premium was installed on my computer. I have tons of room. It does not read my external hard drive on last boot up going through the same stuff here. Gateway said just wait it may take an hour. Everytime I boot? What is with that. I can't get into my passport for Microsoft from this computer on the network. This is a fiasco.

My vista desktop did an auto restart on its on last night and began 'updating' I left it on and went to bed. This morning it was stuck on 'shutting down' I did a hard reset and restarted in save network mode. After the normal dos info on safe mode setup I got a screen saying 'configuring updates'. After about 15 minutes it went to shutting down and its been over 2 hours shutting down. I have no idea what 'updates' it is trying to install. My guess is whatever came out on Tuesday as I use auto update/download. I am using an older xp machine to write this question. The vista machine was bought with vista ultimate installed in March of 07. It is a dual core intel 2.4. I have had no problems with update until today.

im not sure if the problem is a security one. but anyhow, my computer keeps shutting itself down randomly. sometimes its 5 minutes, sometimes its 20. The screen just fades out to black then the computer shuts down. Any ideas as to why? also my internet isnt working on that computer, though all my connections seem to be fine. These both happened this morning when i turned on my pc.

I have a Vista 64 system and everything works just fine, problem is when I shut down the computer Vista will shut down and the computer will keep running for 10 to 15 min before it shuts down. Running AMD 4000 cpu I know that none of the programs in the computer are running during this shut down. It's almost like something in Vista forgot to tell the hard ware to quit. One other thing, I can change the hard drive with to one with windows xp on it and this computer will shut down just like it is suppose to.

when I'm trying to shut it down, my computer walks into something like sleep (tho I can't wake it from it) what exactly happens is: my monitor lets "beep" 3 times and goes black (as it usually does when it's turned off), but power LED on monitor stays green (after turning it off should be yellow) on keyboard num lock/caps lock/scroll lock legs keeps blinking power led on PC stays green all fans are working and I hear that HDD has stopped working (at least I think it is)
I've run safe mode and tried to shut it down from there, everything stays exactly same, with one exception monitor doesn't "beep", isn't going black, but stays on "shutting down" screen which is frozen (animation of "work in progress" circle has stopped) rest is as described above..............

Before the computer actually came to the point of "shuting down just before it tried to load the o/s" it literrly kept shuting down on its own randomly for a week or so. Then the blue screen appeard with this error: 0x0000007BC , 0x84C5DBA0, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000 "Run CHKDSK /F and check for Hard Drive Corruption and then restart your computer"
Basically it's telling me the DRIVE is corruptet! Well, I plugged that SATA 2 HDD into my other computer (windows xp), detected it correctly and actually formated the drive and reinstalled XP on it without any types of problem. Does it still mean - SATA 2 is corrupted or broken!? How about the RAM then ... indeed, I did run the MemTest for 7 times and no errors were found. So the RAM are ok in this case, or am I wrong?! Maybe it's the PSU... ermmm no that cannot be 'cos the computer never shuts down, if I leave it run for (e.g 5 hours) and even if it's comes to "overheating" that cannot be the case eather, as its *again" never shuts down when you leave it run on the power.........

My computer is stuck at the windows update screen when I boot it up. A week or so ago I had some trouble installing a program. Looking for a solution, eventually I found that my windows hadn't been updating for several months. Trying to update manually didn't work and I got an error message. Googling that error message was what brought me to vistax64.com in the first place, and after reading around a bit I managed to determine that I was missing my Windows Update Module (unsure about the exact name). I followed a tutorial that led me into regedit to delete some keys. Now, to the matter at hand: after deleting these keys and restarting, my windows got stuck at the update screen. It says something like: "Configuring update 3 of 3 - 0% Do not turn off or bla bla bla" for a few minutes, without the percentage changing, then restarts. Problem is, when it restarts it displays the exact same message and does the same thing all over again. So it gets caught in a restart loop. I have tried booting from my Vista DVD and have tried the startup repair thing, but that isn't any help. I don't have any save points to restore from, nor a backup. So - the question is: Is there anything I can do about this without having to format and reinstall Windows?

Here 3 days ago i was playing a game on my computer and suddenly it just shut off. when i try to start it again the fan is just running for 4 sec then it shuts down and reboots again. This loop will go on forever and it never starts. The only way of getting it to stop is cutting the power totally. I laid my computer to rest for a day and i tried starting again.
it runned perfectly for about 1 hour, then whitout any warning at all it just shuts off again, Just like if someone cutted the power. I have not been able to start it since. I have tried to plug out the harddisk too see if something on that might have caused the problem, but same thing happens, Keeps rebooting every 4th second.

I have a new Asus Laptop with Vista. Windows Mail has never worked right. After startup it only works for a period of time. (Anywhere from 5 minutes to 1 hour) It then just shows the following error messages. It also will not send an email until I restart my computer. It always works after a startup. I have Zone Alarm, but it acted this way before I loaded it. Is there a setting that should be changed? My internet connection is a Sprint Mifi. This is quite frustrating. I was able to load previous contacts from Outlook express without problems.

after my computer boots it gets stuck on a black screen with a mouse cursor in the middle. I have been researching and reading for a solution but have not found one that works for me. I can't boot into safe mode or even safe mode with command prompt so i cant do any registry fixes which some people suggest. Iv also tried last known good configuration but that didnt work either. ctrl + alt + delete doesn't work either. iv tried doing a clean install and using the windows diagnostics and recovery toolset version 6. but they havnt worked either after the loading files bar the KSOD comes back again, it is like the computer cannot read the discs or it wont boot from them.

We tried to restart the computer manually, but to no avail. Vista loaded Windows, but before prompting me with a login screen, it dumbed again. We then tried to boot it in safe mode. Everything works fine there, so we tried to reboot normally again. Another dumb. We tried yet again, after removing the disc. Nothing. Since then we've tried system recovery to set it back a few days, we've tried to let it repair itself, we've tried to unplug everything (everything - mouse, keyboard, sound - everything but the monitor). The monitor, by the way, have some weird lines running down the screen, which notably aren't there when booting in safe mode.
The error code that appears on the dumb is as follows: STOP: 0x000000050 (0x8F875370,0x00000001,0x8EB5AB0A,0x00000000)

whenever I put the computer to sleep mode and move the mouse while it's getting into sleep mode, it'll either restart or kill the computer. When it kills the computer, the fans still run but the lights on the front go out. There is also no picture on the monitor. To turn off the computer, I have to force a shutdown by holding the power button for around 4 seconds. Then, when I try to turn on the computer again, the fans turn on, the hard drive runs, but still no lights on the front of the case nor picutre on the screen. I fixed it by clearing the RTC RAM on the motherboard. After doing that, the computer would boot up, but if I did sleep mode and moved the mouse, then the computer would die again, and I'd have to clear the RTC RAM again. I'm wondering why this happens with sleep mode. I use Vista Home Premium 64-bit. Is there a solution to this problem or does anyone else have this problem?

When I click on my windows mail icon, it won't launch unless I restart my computer. Then it will launch and works fine but if I close the program, it won't launch again. I also get an error message that says the following: Outlook Express at 0x0359399d referenced memory at 0x0000006c. The memory could not be written. Click ok to terminate the program. At the top of the window this message appears in it says the following Outlook Express Foldersync Window Class: WinMail. exe-application error.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop that this past week decided to do a Windows update and afterwards was running at 100% cpu and really slow. After everything I did and everything I knew to do I decided to clean the HD and re-install the OS. I partitioned the HD and tried to install Vista. It got all the way thru to the point it was "suppose" to reboot and ask for my name and comp info and just shut down. When I turned it back on a window popped up saying something to the effect of "windows restared unexpectedly or had an unexpected error please select ok to restart your computer and installation of Windows" so then I have to re-install all over again and it failed again and again. I ran the pre-boot system assessment and found out my HD crashed. I installed a new HD and ran the pre-boot assessment again and everything checks out but I'm still getting the box to pop up cause it keeps turning itself off at the same point as I mentioned above. I can't/ don't know how to get into DOS so I can check the motherboard but I'm getting ready to throw this thing up against the wall.

I am not sure what has happened but the following message appears when turning on my comp: Quote: Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1) Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer
2) Choose your language settings and then click Next
3) Click 'Repair your Computer'.
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance. File: windowssystem32windload.exe. Status: 0xc000000e Info: the selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt. I have the disk but how do i boot from it? I am very worried i've broken my comp for good.

Why, on Earth, that even my desktop computer which I've just recently re-installed windows XP is it annoying me with the yellow shield saying I need updates?! I just did it now and it said "done, now we need to restart" I click restart, it boots up and it STILL says I need to update! Could it be because, this computer ALSO has Microsoft Office 2003? If Office 2003 the problem, or is my luck just crap bad nowadays?

This happens to me every morning when I turn my computer on after having it off all night.
I turn on my computer. Windows loads then I get a message (as soon as windows is done loading all up) that "Windows will be shutting down in less than a minute."
So it shuts down, restarts, and when it gets back on my User Account Control is turned off. So I turn User Account Control back on and it's fine until the next morning. Sometimes, but not often it will do this after my computer has been Hibernating for a while.

For the last few days or so I have been having problems with Vista Home Premuim 64bit not shutting down properly or looging off. I click on shut down and then the computer will just hang for a about 5mins and then decide to shut off sometimes or if it does not then the only way I can get it to turn off is by holding the power button in, which I dont really like doing. I have closed all programmes down by the clock on the task bar and the problem is still the same. Do you recommend trying a clean boot? I really want to try and find out where this problem lies as I don't really want to go through another reinstall of Vista.

I have been trying to publish a project created in Windows Movie Maker in Windows DVD Maker. However, each time i add the project in and click next, windows shuts dvd maker down. The problem and resolutions page suggests i try disabling lmpgtspl.ax, which i have done to no avail. I can add in the individual unedited video clips without issue, but not the finished project. I can publish the project on my computer and burn it onto DVD that way, but i then lose certain features, such as scenes etc.

On boot, security icon in tray indicates the windows firewall is shut down. I'm not sure if defender or AVG has built in firewall that is taking over ans shutting off the windows firewall.
