Recently, all my files icons have a small blue box with >> inside it attached to them. Can anyone explain what program is causing this and what do they mean? Unfortunately , I can not cut and paste a sample in here.
I can't tell you how close to tears I come with Vista. I have a vast number of PDF and Word documents that I must constantly use -rearrange - organize - categorize...If I am using the "Details" view - I can't look at the titles of the files the way I WANT TO ... I must either see EVERYTHING as "Size column to fit" or worse, "Szie all columns to fit."
If I am using the "List" view and moving files in my main folder into (or out of) several sub folders, the entire list will automatically move about when I perform a drag and drop operation, from the folder at the start of the list (where I drop it) to suddenly shifting many columns back to where I got the file from ... OMG I want to scream!
If I use "Small Icons" I can't read the entire title of half of my files and can't read their size or dates."Tiles" and "Medium Icons" are just too big ...Why can't I actually have "classic view" when I try to set up the windows with CLASSIC VIEW???I swear - it's as though someone at Microsoft actually believes that most people only play video games and not serious work.Is there anyway to actually make folders open and function like all of the old Windows systems did? These nifty bells and whistles consume so much of my time and I'm close to never coming back to this platform again.
The icon size of the recently run programs list on the Start Menu is set to large by default. This is great if you like the large icons but it also cuts down on the number of recently run programs that can be displayed. Follow the steps below to give your Start Menu a cleaner look and disable large icons: ...
This is my first time posting here. I searched the forum for an answer and became confused as to what answer might apply to my question. So, I appologize in advance if this question is redundant and/or placed in the incorrect section of the forum. I'm not sure if my problem is a file association problem, related to compressed folders, or a problem with Vista, or something else.
This is what's going on....
All of my zip files suddenly have Internet Explorer icons, but (right-click) "properties" still shows that the files are .zip files.
There is no 'Extract' option available when I right click on one of these files.
If I left click on one of these zip files, IE windows start opening and closing non-stop until I hit the on/off button and turn my computer off.
I don't know how IE got associated as the program to open my .zip files. At least I am assuming that is what has happened given that all my zip files have IE icons now.
The only thing that I can think of that may have caused this is when my husband tried to open a regular 'folder' (not a zip file) using the 'open with' option and he then selected MS Works to open the folder (he's not so computer savvy). After that little mistake this all started with my zip files. Don't know if it's related to the problem or not.
I sure would appreciate your help to get this fixed. Below are my computer details. Let me know if you need more details.
My son installed a 3rd party theme on Vista 32 and then uninstalled it. Instead of folder icons, all icons now look like files, hard to now tell the difference between a folder or a file in a directory. Is there a way to get them back to the original folders?
Does anyone know why the icons from the .COM and .EXE files for so many pre-Vista apps and games are not recognized by Vista? I have literally dozens of old games and apps that for some reason still work with Vista (Unlike most things that won't run at all), but when I try to change the icon, Vista says no icons were found in the file. I know for a fact the icons are in there, but Vista refuses to recognize them.
I have in the desktop folder of my computer several files and shortcuts. One of them is called 'Internet Explorer'. But the icon corresponding to that name doesn't appear in the desktop!
Hey all, I'm sure you've heard it before but im getting vista BSOD errors and dmp files are being created I tried looking at it myself but I'm not sure whats wrong I was hoping if someone had a second they can take a peek at it? This is the error that comes up, the rest and the .DMP file is at this link in a RAR file: 'rar host - free file hosting for .rar files!'......
I've been trying to reinstall vista for a couple of days now and always get a blue screen at some point when using the newly installed OS. It usually happens immediately after logging in. I've ran CHKDSK several times and it never finds any errors. I've attached several of the dump files
I was sure to save my files every half hour or so, thinking that that would be enough to not lose my work in the event of a malfunction. However, I pressed save and my entire summary of work simply disappeared! Fair enough. I wouldn't be so angry, but this is the second time it has happened. The first time (on my previous computer), it completely erased 7 weeks of work. So, I got a new computer, and guess what? It has happened again. Not only that, but a BRAND NEW computer has had the blue screen of death twice in the last month. Before it died at 6 months of age, my last computer had the blue screen regularly (at least 3 times a week). This has never happened on any of my other computers before that.
This loss of work has also happened to 2 of my friends. I have also noticed, that anything that makes the hard drive work hard, also results in blue screen. The only link that I can see between the 2 computers, is vista. I also find, that my computer has to think hard about all the appearance graphics and animations that have been put on Vista to make it look nice. I have simply ditched the niceties and opted for performance, even though my desktop now looks like window 95. What did I get? Blue screen............
just bought vista home premium 32 bit put the disk in got to drive options formatted HD was going very well until it got to copying files it stopped at 21% then up flashed the blue screen had to manually restart the pc still cant get it going had it for less than 24 hours very very frustrated the shop where i bought the pc from i e-mailed him the problem i was having his e-mail reply was hand it in and i will install vista and all updates for you for
I got a blue screen on the 1st day I was up and running with Windows Vista 64 (pre-loaded on my new HP Pavilion computer). Everything was working beautifully, I was very happy that it all went well and I had no major problems getting set up. Then out of the blue, nothing was going on, I went to the START menu and as soon as I touched the Start button it crashed into blue screen.
WHen it restarted I got this message: Problem signature Problem Event Name: BlueScreen OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.768.3 Locale ID: 1033
Files that help describe the problem Mini033109-01.dmp sysdata.xml Version.txt

I have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons. This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct.
After an automatic windows update, my computer restarted and everything on the monitor has shrunk down in size including the toolbar, sidebar, mouse, internet explorer and everthing else. I have a Dell 22" widescreen LCD with resolution set at 1680 by 1050 which I believe is the correct resolution. Any recommendations to return everything back to its normal size?
what Vista (and XP for that matter) uses for name resolution when on a small p2p workgroup? With no domain or server running DNS and no longer able to run Netbios on the pc. With IP installed I can ping by IP address but what exactly is allowing me to ping by machine name?
Everything on my computer is smaller not the size of the screen. but the web pages the pictures/ print / the works I did not change the apperance. Or any thing like that it just did it. I have tryed everything but can't get it to return to normal.
I've been trying for a while now, to connect 3 of my computers in a small home network. As far I understand all I have to do is have a wireless router. and then put all 3 computers under the same workgroup, then they should be able to see each other. I do have a trend micro firewall, which I put under the profile small home network.
Every time I send pictures there are about 20 small pictures of advertisement. I go throw all my pictures I want to send and they are find and then I send them and check the pictures after I send them I have all these advertizing small pictures.
I was searching around Google for a while and wasn't able to find any answers. I'm using Home Premium x64 SP1, and the annoyance is AOL Instant Messenger. AIM has small buttons for the top right (minimize, maximize, and close) and for some reason Vista can't detect them as being those buttons. So since Vista's got a thick resize area, I can only mouse over 1/4 of the close button before it changes to the resize cursor. I was hoping some of you have found a workaround or solution to this, and I'm not interested in using another IM program. I've included a small screen shot in case you don't have AIM installed and can see for yourself how small the buttons are.
my problem is that the display and font size too small. I have done system restore and changed the resolution of the screen. once when I did sytem restore it came back to normal but them after is went to sleep it came back small and different type font. now I cannot get it back at all. My backround is smaller not taking the whole monitor as it did What can I do I am very frustrated I cannot figure it out.
I sometimes get my main monitor blurry (I have 2). It looks like the resolution decreased and it even has these small horizontal lines flashing you can notice when you look real close to it. It resembles ?static?. To fix it, I can go to the nVidia control panel and switch the monitor configuration and then hit ?No? when it asks me if I want to keep the setting But then it will come back again later at random it seems.
There are numerous queries for this problem on the site but no answers. When viewing a streamed movie on the net the images are good in the small screen mode: however, when changed to full screen mode, there is only a black screen with sound. "Esc" returns the stream to the movie in small screen mode. Does anyone have a fix?
Against the advice of all of my colleagues, I am trying to install Vista on a new computer I've assembled. Every single component is supposedly Vista-compatible (in fact, I just upgraded to a $200 video card so Vista would run). But I cannot get past the blue screen of death during the "Expanding Files" stage of installation. Soon after it reaches 1% I get a "System Service Exception" and there's a hexidecimal code below that ends in "3B". I can provide the specs of all the hardware in my system if required. What would you do, short of giving up and just installing XP?
all my desktop icons got suddenly changed to internet explorer icons, after (i opened some program in the internet,) then i did some personalisation then it changed to my adobe photoshop icon, all the desktop icons now shows the adobe,,icons.like all my programs which was earlier like (yahoo msngr, msn mesengr, windows vista programs, almost all other programs) and my internet wireless stopped working. i have a vista home premium 32. and my comp is asus f3t series. i was trying to do the icon cache, but couldnt find. tried restarting but couldnt solve.now trying to run my antivirus scan Mcafee. if anybody knows the solution to restore my earlier icons.
All of my picture icons were changed to standard-generic icons when I had my computer restored to the factory direct setting. Now they don't display anything except a flower, house, ect. My question is: How do I change the picture icon setting back so I can see a tiny preview thingy for each icon, instead of having to click on each one to see what they really are?
