I've been trying for a while now, to connect 3 of my computers in a small home network. As far I understand all I have to do is have a wireless router. and then put all 3 computers under the same workgroup, then they should be able to see each other. I do have a trend micro firewall, which I put under the profile small home network.

students to access through user name and password an internet platform to do
the exercise work after each class lesson). This system uses Windows Vista Basic as operating system and is based on a 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN.
1.It is possible to create a Vista Install DVD allowing ??? in case of serious problems with the hardware on one PC ??? to format the hard disk and reload the Operating System, Configuration, Programs and LAN configuration (not exceeding 2 or 3 GB of disk space for the image) just by loading the Install DVD, without the need for calling any expert to solve the situation. I have to explain that recently a similar situation occurred and it took three hours of an expert???s time to reload the whole configuration and programs on the PC concerned.
2.If the answer to the above point is yes, what are the simple steps to follow to achieve what described at above point 1.
It has been years, we have been transferring files between our home PCs and Laptops in our home network. But as we updated our Laptop with Vista SP1 & SP2, the network has become a one way only. We can transfer files to the rest of the network PCs, but the Vista Laptop does not let us in. We do see it listed in our network.
We had to re-format the laptop drive and as we loaded the Vista back again, we were able to transfer files two way, but as the SP1 and SP2 update was loaded, file transfer has become one way only. Did go through the setup on the Laptop drive as we did before. What are we missing in SP1 & SP2 updates?
I'm attempting to set up a new PC with RAID 0 using Vista x64 Home Edition Premium. However, I'm having no luck. (Hours of scouring various forums have yielded nothing as well.) I've set up 2 RAID 0 partitions across my 2 SATA drives using Intel's Matrix Storage Manager. (CTRL + I thing at boot) When I load up Vista for installation, it recognizes the partitions but refuses to let me install on them. I get an alert at the bottom of the screen saying that my "...computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."
I'm not completely clear on what this means, but after entering BIOS, I have my drive configuration set to configure SATA as RAID. Attempting to continue the installation yields something like "Windows cannot find a drive that is suitable for installation" (not verbatim, sorry.).........
How do I set up Windows Mail from my home computer.I'm not able to go any further as I'm not sure where to find the POP or whatever the code I need is.Am I even eligable to have a microsoft account?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have three desktops and a laptop connected to a linksys router connected to a comcast cable box. The comcast system uses a WPA encryption which cannot be changed to WEP as they do not use WPA. I have system 3 shield (iolo) system guard, antivirus, firewall, and the Vista ultimate firewall turned off. I see an unknown computer named FISHY (IP 192.168.1.139) with unknown gaming files on my home network. I have renamed the network on all of our computers and still this unknown computer shows up using MSHOME. I've enabled the Linksys router to acept only the IP addresses our computers, and to deny the IP of FISHY to no avail. How do I remove the FISHY computer. If I turn off the file sharing or discovery all that does is make the FISHY intruder become invisible but they are still there on the network. The shared files on FISHY say Desktop.ini so they are hacking into my system, how do I stop?

I would like to be able to setup a network drive so that vista media center can monitor it. This way we could turn on vista and browse to the vids or pics and see what is new. This would save a lot of hassle of emailing them all the time. We all have the same dynamic isp, routers and Vista proff or ultimate. So i'm thinking that if i can get 2 computers to work like i want over a VPN then i'll have no problem with the rest of the families computers. I have used Cisco to successfully setup a vpn across country using one computer with vista and the other with xp. Is vista's vpn setup similar to cisco's? Is Vista capable of creating what i described above?

I know currently with XP, if you setup a network printer it only shows up for the user that is logged into the pc. To get around that currently, we setup a local print port and point it to the print server.
View 4 Replies View RelatedToday, I've re-installed Vista about 4 freakin times from scratch. Every time, I have setup my network (not installing any drivers) and download these two apps: VMWARE Workstation 6.5.0 (full version, not pirated, etc), and Alchohol 52%. Every time I install Alcohol 52% and restarted my computer, it would always go into an endless loop, or give me the Blue Screen of Death. On Alchohol's website, it said that it is 100% Vista compatible. I know that it is, because I've installed it on Windows 7 and in Windows Vista (vmware install) before. When I install Ubuntu Linux, however, I get no BSOD's. Alchohol runs perfectly under WINE (hahaha). Vista sucks. 4 times. Called M$ and they said (in other words, obviously), that they don't give a crap what runs under vista.
yes, i've right-clicked, run as admin, etc, all vista sh*** that we need to do to install a program. So, 4 BSOD's in one day. M$. Windows Vista; A life without walls. yeah, right.
I provide the technical support for an international photographic competition and this involves setting up a temporary wired Ethernet network to interconnect several laptops during our entry processing or judging sessions. This network uses a small 5-port Fast Ethernet switch and fixed IP addresses.
I only used laptops running Windows XP and everything was fine. I'm now trying to add a new laptop running Vista Home Premium and am hitting problems due to my total lack of any previous Vista experience. I have managed to set the IP address on the Vista laptop but it cannot 'see' any other machines on the network and the XP laptops cannot gain access to the Vista machine.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to help someone running Vista Home Premium setup his network to share files and folders with his XP Home laptop. Oddly enough, there are no share options AT ALL. No share buttons or no share options in the context menus -- NOTHING. We've named the network and simply went out to share a printer (which we have the option to share) but it turns itself off. Same in Network and Sharing Center. We turn the options ON and then turn themselves OFF. We've done all the rebooting, etc. and still no go. I have gone through all the disabling of the UAC and ownership and permissions, et. al. but, can't get anywhere without the SHARE OPTION being available. Is his install of Windows Vista Home Premium broken or needing to be reinstalled? Could that be the problem? Could it have been setup improperly? I have successfully done this before on my Vista Business computer and my XP Pro laptop and although i did have a few 'permission' problems, they were at least workable.
View 4 Replies View Related1.a wireless laptop running Vista Ultimate. 2.an ethernet wired desktop running Vista Ultimate. 3.a SM8014W-G gateway. The laptop and the desktop can connect to the internet with no poroblems. I can ping the laptop(192.168.0.102) from the desktop. I get "request timed out" when I ping the desktop(192.168.1.2) from the laptop. When I map the network, my gateway icon on each computer shows up as a different address. The laptop gateway icon has 192.168.0.1, whereas the desktop gateway icon has 192.168.1.1. I have double and triple checked all the Vista settings for network discovery, file and printer sharing, they are set correctly on both devices. If I connect the laptop to my desktop through a crossover cable, I do have a network available on which I can share all files and printers without any problem.
I have contacted my ISP (Rogers) numerous times and they told me I had to contact the manufacturer(SMC) as they only provide support for connectivity. I contacted SMC and they told me that Rogers had to provide support as Rogers has all the administrator rights to my gateway. I contacted Rogers and they told me that I had to "use a PRIVATE IP address and not a PUBLIC IP address". Umm, isn't the 192. series the private IP's? Needless to say I don't believe anyone at Rogers knows what they're doing. I am also beginning to believe that my gateway is not designed to create a home network and is just a modem with multiple connection ports. Aside from returning the gateway to rogers for a regular single connection modem and purchasing a router from say best buy, do you all have any ideas? I am only looking to set-up a home network consisting of a laptop and a desktop for file and prineter sharing.
I have a network share setup b/w a Vista Ultimate x32 and XP machines. Using the XP machine, I open the Vista hosted share but found some files "missing", ie. even though they physically exist in the Vista machine, I simply cannot see them from XP. Turns out that these files are missing the EVERYONE in the File Permissions (right click file, properties, security). These are files downloaded using Firefox, and whether they are JPG, AVI, TXT, DOC, XLS they are all missing the EVERYONE permission. If I download the same files using Internet Explorer, the files get created with the EVERYONE permission.
My current workarounds ... which none are desirable are this:Use Internet Explorer, Add EVERYONE permission for each file manually (you have to do this one by one, can't select multiple files and perform bulk operation),Use CMD line utilities like takeown and icacls Note this is a secure home network, and while file sharing using EVEYRONE isn't the safest way to do this, I can finetune this later. The key problem at hand is what I've described above. I'd be happy just to be able to get FireFox create files with the full permissions, same way IE does.
I am trying to set up a small network but having some difficulties – it does not work - I have done everything I think I should have done but still it does not work. OK what I have is two desktop machines DT (1) and DT(2) running XP Pro I think with SP2 – dont think I have SP3 and a nice four port O2 wirelessrouter which seems to be a Thomson Telecoms product and lovely new and shiny New Toshiba Tecra M10 running Vista Business. I am running ZoneAlarm as my firewall.
At the movement my main DT PC (1) is the only XP PC connected - obviously using Cat 5 cable and the Toshiba Laptop is also connected using Cat 5 cable. I did the XP set up a home network wizard and that seemed to be OK. I have set both the DT (1) and the LT to be on the same workgroup and on the DT (1) when I go to My Networks and then workgroup I can see (icons for) both the DT (1) and the LT.
I have multiple LARGE drives on the DT (1) and this is why I want the other DT (2) machine on the network to use as a fileserver – i have what must be close to a trillion pictures that i want to sort out - the work of a lifetime and a lifetimes work and i still have years of negatives to scan and sort I will then move all (apart from one) HDD’s to the second DT (2)............
i'm trying to network my laptop with my desktop via my modem. i cant seem to get it right. only thing i did so far was to access the public folder. i want to be able to map the C drives onto both machines.

I am using a D-Link router with a built-in printerserver and a USB cable from the server to a HP Deskjet printer (I have two, one 1500-series, one 2300, both having the same problem). Ok. I install the printer via a TCP/IP port, no problem. I print a test page, it starts ok, but stops and hangs 2-3 lines from the end, and the print queu hangs. I have contacted HP, no help, and Microsoft, no help. No error messages. Has anyone heard of this, I have found nothing in different fora? In addition: I also have a PC using XP, use the same print server and printer without any problems
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a desktop running XP Home SP2, and a new laptop running Vista Home Premium. I would like to access the DVD-ROM drive on the latop from the desktop. I have successfully shared my desktop resources with the laptop, but not vice versa. Both computers are on the same Workgroup. I have turned off Password protected sharing and shared the DVD-ROM drive in the Folders window. Network Discovery and File Sharing are on.
When I try to access the laptop from my desktop through Windows Explorer>My Network Places>Microsoft Windows Network>"workgroup name">"Laptop name" I get a window that says "'laptop name' not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions."
We have four or so computers on a home office network, with one of them being used as a fax receiver, using the fax software that comes with Windows. We want to be able to send faxes from each computer, via that one that is connected to the phone line. It has XP, most of the others have Vista.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm setting up a computer for my house and wanted to transfer files from my XP laptop to the vista desktop. I tried crossover cable and router, but cannot completely setup the network between the two computers. I've tried with firewalls on and off, and the laptop does NOT have norton (on the gazillion forums I've read, norton is a problem.) The workgroups are the same (I changed them repeatedly just in case) and I've tried static IP addresses On Vista:
Network set to private
*Network discovery on
*file sharing on
*public folder sharing on
*printer sharing on
*password protected sharing off (also tried on)
*when viewing network map,
I can see the xp on the map but cannot click on it. (connected by dashes, I'm assuming because the xp is now setup on wireless. when I used the crossover cable it was a solid line. same on wired connection)*when viewing computers and devices, can see the xp and router but get the following error when I click on the xp: "Windows cannot access \computer-name"*I can ping the IP address of the xp but not the xp computer name**I can NOT open the folder by typing the xp IP address or xp computer name into explorer (\IP-ADDRESS or \COMPUTER_NAME)....
We have our network setup so that we can see and access all the machines in the home network even including two game counsels but we cannot see the one machine in the house that runs on Windows XP. It is the only one that is hardwired to the router. All the machines are visible in the workgroup on the XP machine but is not seen on any of the Vista machines. When I doubleclick the other machines in the workgroup from the one running Windows XP the user name and password key appears but one of the other Vista machines says "The network path was not found." That probably has to do with the firewall correct? What I'm trying to get accomplished here is to be able to see the XP machine on all the other computers and be able to access it from the Vista machines. What is the next step to try and get this resolved?

View 4 Replies View Relatedumm well for about 6 months now i've had my laptop (with vista premium 32 bit) and i was connected wirelessly to my home network with no problems. Then all of a sudden a few days ago (13th or 14th to be precise) at midnight i no longer had any internet connectivity. I was browsing the internet, watching a video, from a little before midnight till 12:30 and when i was done i noticed the loss of internet connection.
When i try to troubleshoot the problem i get the "cannot communicate with primary DNS server". I CAN access my home network (sent a file to our desktop computer's shared folder and recieved it just fine) but my internet connection is down. When i check in Network and Sharing Center i see the line from my PC to the home network in green but the one from home to internet is Xed. On the other hand, my brother (who also has vista on his laptop) did not get this problem and any other periferal accessing the router (wii, xbox360, DS) can all access the internet.............
I have (vista home perimium) my internet connection shows unindentified network,i am not able to connect any wifi connections.but on my friends who are who are using the same wifi connection ,has no problem in the connection.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI can access the Vista laptop through the desktop PC XP SP2 which is wired to the router but I can't acces the desktop pc via the laptop which is connected wirelessly, though it shows it in the "Network" window. I get an error that says Windows cannot access (computer name) error code:0x80070035 network path was not found. Then it offers to diagnose and then when it has finished, it says "Cannot communicate with (Computer name) 192.168.1.3" This seems strange as I can access Vista with XP but not XP with Vista.

I type it in and it just defaults back to something else that's in there. like this... I will type in a word ..like..eclipse..for the user name and then type in the password in the box underneath...then it comes up as ..whatever/eclipse ...and will not let me connect. And I cannot get rid of the username that's in there.
View 5 Replies View RelatedNew Dell PC Running Vista, Office 2007 & Nornton Internet Security ......Am trying to backup Outlook 2007 pst file from one computer to another on our network. I can copy and paste any other file from the originating computer to the destination folder without a problem. (Sharing is enabled.)But I cannot use the Outlook backup procedure, nor can I simply copy the pst file and paste it to the destination folder over the network.
When I attempt a backup or a copy/paste (with Outlook closed) I get the same reaction. The "wheels turn" for about 60seconds then an error message pops up saying "There is a problem accessing [path and pst file name]". I checked Task Manager and verified Outlook.exe is not open. Some how it is glued in place. But I can copy/paste it to a folder on the same machine. I just can't move it over the network. I posted a description of this issue on the Outlook forum but no one has come up with a solution.
I have been using this forum as a guest for quite sometime now and decided to join the forum as I really like the community here. I have an issue w/ a home network I have that includes 3 total computers: Comp A: 1 Vista Home X32 PC (that is wired into a WRT54G router) w/ Windows firewall Comp B: 1 Windows XP Professional Laptop w/ Zone alarm (free) firewall connected to the network via wireless Comp C: 1 Vista Home Premium X64 Laptop w/ Windows firewall connected to the network via wireless Here are some notes to highlight what is going on:Originally, Comp A and Comp B were networked together with no issues Yesterday, I purchased Comp C and am trying to include this computer into the networkComp A and Comp B can communicate w/ no issues and both can access Comp C w/ no issues Comp C can access Comp B, but CAN NOT acess Comp AAll comps can PING each other w/ no issues When Comp C tries to Access Comp A, this Error message is displayed: 'Comp A' is not accessible.

Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer. All Comps (A,B, and C) have access to the (1) network printer w/ no issues Things I have tried to remedy the issue:I have tried to turn off firewalls for Comp A and Comp C Spent a huge amount of time reseaching on the internet to no avail Network discovery is on for Comp A and Comp C I tried to edit the settings for my WRT54G router, but didn't know what to do I know there are some other things I have tried, but can't remember exactly.
when I open my network I do not see 2 of 3 computers on the home network. I have 2wire, the main PC supports the printer. I use to be able to open all computers.
