Drive Boot And Showing As "foreign" A 479mb Partition That I Don't Recognize

Mar 23, 2008

Somehow I managed to mess up my boot disk by converting it to dynamic. Now whenever I boot, I need to: This will now let that drive boot. I'm running Vista Ultimate with several SATA and USB drives attached - the boot drive is SATA. I also see a strange drive in disk manager (once it's booted) showing as "foreign" a 479mb partition that I don't recognize. I'm tempted to delete it, but won't until I know that it wouldn't hurt anything. Is there anything that I can do to avoid this process every time I reboot?

External HD (partition Not Showing Up)..

May 2, 2009

I have a 1 TB external HD that is broken up into three partitions. For some reason, only two of three partitions will appear in Windows Vista. When I had it connected to my now out-of-commission desktop which ran XP, all partitions showed up and were accessible with no problem.

Can anyone offer any insight as to what's causing this and/or how to fix it? As luck would have it, my entire music library is on the one partition that won't show up, so I've been unable to access my music since my desktop has been down.

DVD-RW Drive Will Not Recognize

Aug 12, 2009

How come this happens? I will be using Windows Vista 32bit Home Premium and it simply will not recognize any DVD that I put in the DVD drive. I hit restart and the same thing happens. Then I hit shut down and let it shut down and then restart it with the power button and the DVD-RW drive and any disc in it will be read perfectly. This seems odd and disconcerting.

Wont Recognize Hard Drive

Jul 18, 2009

The drive is properly installed and is recognized correctly in the bios screen at startup. vista hp boots up. I right-click on my computer> manage. The computer management utility opens up and the new drive is recognized in the device manager but when I click on disk management I get a pop-up saying "an internal error has occured.

Restart the Disk Management snap-in." I hit ok. the same message comes up three more times, then I geta message saying "MMC has detected an error in a snap-in" and requeststhat I shut down and restart MMC, which I do and it just does the same again. Thats as far as I get. But here's the thing: I've been getting that error message way before I even installed the drive but had forgotten about it til now.

CD DVD Drive Doesnt Recognize Maxell CD-R Discs

Nov 6, 2008

My OS is Vista Home Premium 32 bits. My cd/dvd drive is HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM LG GSA-H55N SCSI. I have one strange problem with my cd/dvd drive since a couple of days.

---My cd/dvd drive doesn't recognize Maxell CD-R discs and certain movie dvds and doesn't read any music cds (manufacturized albums). When I insert the disk, there's this message ''Insert the disk on Drive E:''. But it doesn't have any problems with other CD-R and DVD-R like Memorex and Sony. Last week, October 26, I played a DVD movies (like Broadway melody) without any problems. I tried to play it again today it gives me the ''insert the disc message''. Is it due to some Windows update? or anything?

Flash Drive: How Can Get Windows To Recognize This Device

Jan 25, 2008

I ordered a SanDisk 4.0 GB Cruzer Micro USB Flash Drive with my Vostro 400 computer running Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium Edition. When I inserted the Flash Drive in the USB port Windows asked me to install the driver for the device. There was no software included with the Flash Drive. I checked the box requesting Windows to look for a driver through the Windows Update feature. It came back and said no driver could be found for this device. I then went to the manufacturer's website but they don't have a driver listed for this particular Flash Drive. I called Dell and all they could tell me is that Windows should have recognized the device automatically. how I can get Windows to recognize this device. My brother has the same identical computer and Flash Drive and his installed without a problem

Hiding Foreign Language Fonts

I tried to delete them, even when logged in as owner and administrator, taking ownership, etc., but have found no solution myself after trying all the solutions that were posted on this forum.

DVD-RW Drive: Windows Wouldn't Recognize Any Recordable Disks

May 14, 2009

I recently tried to burn a CD for the first time in a number of months. I'd always used Roxio software for burning with no real probs but this time I could not get the drive to recognize the CD-R disk. Decided to delete the Roxio software and use the built in Windows Vista burning program instead but kept getting same message asking me to insert a disk. Checked the DVD RW drive properties and found it was set up ok as a recordable drive. Decided that the drive must be kaput so I bought a new one. Installed that ok but still Windows wouldn't recognize any recordable disks of any form that I put in the drive. Installeed the Nero 8 software that came with the drive and still have the same problem using that!

Can't Boot Into XP Partition

Mar 5, 2009

I've got a system that has XP on an IDE disk (the primary boot drive), and I've got a copy of Vista on my SATA second drive. I was double-booting so that I could experiment with Vista to see if I was ready to move to it, but my time has run out. Suddenly the IDE drive with XP on it has started to fail, not quite catastrophically but enough so that I can't boot into the XP partition, and I'm moving my operation over onto the Vista partition. And I'm going to have to remove the failing IDE drive and replace it with a new one.

Unfortunately the master boot record is on the failing IDE drive. I've been looking around on the web for repair tools and it looks like the Recovery Environment that you can get to by booting from the installation DVD will do the job, but can anyone give me a cookbook approach to getting this fixed? I don't know what I need to do about a boot sector, whether just repairing the MBR is all I have to do, and so on and so forth.

Removing A Boot File From A Partition That Is NOT Being Used

Aug 24, 2009

I was having problems with VistaHP and thought that I could kill 2 birds with one stone by adding a new Hard Drive and reinstalling Windows VistaHP. For information purposes, the original HD was Partitioned into "C" (OS), "D" data files, "E" (Photos) and "F" Extra storage (for future use). In any event, I did not have the proper cables available so I REMOVED the original HD and placed the new HD in my system and installed VistaHP and Partitioned the new HD in to 4 Partitions also and installed all my software programs, data files, apps, ...... on the new HD.

Everything appeared to be fine and a couple of weeks later, I placed the orginal HD back in the system with the intentions of Re-Formatting the drive for additional stirage (and using the new HD as the Primary Drive). This went "semi-OK", I was able to reform and re-label most of the Partitions on the original HD except for the Partition that contained Vista and at the moment, when I go to My Computer I have Local Disk "C" (39.8GB free of 82.7GB), Old C Drive "D" (13.4MB free of 125MB), "G" Data Files (29.8GB free of 36.8GB), "H" Photos (181GB free of 194GB), "I" BU (82.5GB of 151GB), "P" Extra Space (352GB free of 352GB) and "Q" More Extra Space (45.4GB free of 95.3GB).

My objective / what I would like to do, is DELETE and / or Re-Format the "D" (Old C Drive) which I was able to get down to 125MB but as best as I can tell, the Drive contains the following file 125.5MB with 107.8MB Used and 17.7MB Free and the following folders:

$RECYCLE.BIN, BOOT, System Volume.

Dual Boot Issue It Partition

Aug 29, 2007

I recently enabled RAID on my system with 2 brand new 250GB drives. I partitioned the drives into 3 partitions each about 155GB each. I then installed XP and assigned it the 1st partition. XP called it the C drive. The other partitions were automatically called D and E once in XP. I then installed Vista WITHIN XP and choose the second partition "D" as XP reported it to be. Vista installed fine, but once booted up (dual boot), vista reports itself as installed on drive D. Shouldn't Vista automatically rename its drive to C? And XP would be on drive D? and the open partition left for E while IN vista? A friend of mine has XP and Vista dual booted and his rig and when in XP, the XP drive is C. When he is booted in Vista, then Vista is drive C. And either of the OS's drop to drive D depending on which OS he is booted into. I wonder if the way I installed Vista though XP has anything to do with this?

Installing XP Pro 2nd Partition Dual Boot

Apr 1, 2008

first of all, il explain what exactly i wanted to do with my laptop which is currently running a Vista Home Premium 32bit. I needed to install an 64bit ver of XP Pro on a 2nd partition and set it to dual boot. My laptop is a Fujitsu-Siemens and has a single WD 250GB Sata HD and my processor supports 64Bit OS. I followed the instructions on the forums on how to shrink a partition and create a new one for the second OS(XP). However, after going through the procedure i placed the XP disk in the tray and booted from it. It was loading just fine then suddenly after i press enter when i was asked to continue to install, it mentioned later that it could not detect any hard drive or that i need to disable any program or whatever. I figured maybe theres a setting in the bios but i found nothing i can do with the HD settings. Im not familiar with Vista so i need to know is there any possiblility to install the XP OS. Also, i was wondering if the manufacturer locked the HD and maybe the only way is to reformat the HD and reinstall everything.

C: Drive Showing 0mb Free

Oct 25, 2009

I have a few problems at the moment but think most will stem from this. My C: drive is partitioned at 10gb (Disk Managament shows 10gb). Windows Explorer & the driver Properties windows however are only showing 1.00gb capacity & 0mb free.

This may be the cause for me not being able to run downloaded files from the internet & files from an external source (CD Drive). I have tried the usual methods of defreg, disk clean up, resize shadow storge & running Windows Defender (Which is now giving error messages too) & none of these seem to have fixed the problem. There are a few other things I've tried too, but wondered if anyone has come across this before.

Dvd-rom Drive No Longer Showing Up,

CD-rom Drive not showing up or loading CDs? PLEASE READ EVERYTHING BEFORE ANSWERING!!! For some odd reason my cd drive stopped working after doing a system restore, -ive undone the system restores, tried a different one, tried going throug device manager, found the drive and uninstalled it, to be reinstalled by the system, still didnt work The most common solution ive found: ive also tried the regedit solution to delete lower and upper functions but i cant even find a lower or upper key, at one point there was a lower function, i deleted it but nothing happened and now it doesnt even show up, ive tried reinstalling the driver because that was when i first saw the lower, but still nothing

i know my cd rom is not broken or the wiring is not a problem, ive been having a few problems with my laptop lately, so i know its just technical problems, thats why i really want to do a system recovery, to not have to deal with this again for awhile, i finally decided to do do a system recovey to delete all files and start from scratch, but still nothing! There was no installtion cd for my windows vista, so i just did a recovery to reset everything back to the way it was, tried using my recovery discs that i made when i first had the cd, the drive still cant read it, even after i did the recovery

Computer : Im using Windows Vista HP Laptop DV9700 series to be more exact - and im passed the warranty, stupid hp has no technical help for free, called them last week abt why my webcam wouldnt turn on and they wanted to charge me 50 dollars just to help, when i know its not even really broken just a tech glitch, luckily i fixed the problem with the webcam

Partitioning In Windows 7: Boot Partition Without A Letter - 100 MB

Mar 20, 2010

partition on his 1 terabyte HD with Windows 7 premium installed. In Computeradmin. it shows: The HD is partitioned with: boot partition without a letter - 100 MB. OEM partition also without a letter - 20 MB.

C: partition, system - 945 GB.

D: partition, Recover- 20 GB

All partitions are Simple, fundamental, primary partitions. I did reduce the C-partition from 945 to 439 GB. Then I would make a new simpel partition on the unallocated part. I right clicked to create a simple partition, but it said all partitions would be converted to dynamic dishes. I would only have a simple partition, but there was no such choice.

New Member With Question About Boot Disk Partition

Been lurking for a bit, just signed up. Built the system in my profile. I am learning Vista so will probably have lots of questions.

I originally loaded Vista 64 on a 65GB OZ SSD. Seemed to be quickly filling up without any major software load, so decided to put the OS on my 500GB drive. Put the page file on the SSD, and user folders on the 1TB data drive. I saw a couple of posts here saying that the OS will work better/faster on a smaller partition. What size partition would you recommend for Vista 64 on the 500GB drive?

External USB Drive Not Showing In Explorer

Jan 23, 2009

I am experiencing the same problem as listed in other posts on this topic, but with a twist that is keeping me from resolving the problem. I have a 160gb WD USB external drive of my brother's that I'm trying to save for him, and we're experiencing all of the same symptoms as the other posts on this topic. The drive is automatically recognized when plugged in, drivers auto install, windows correctly identifies the drive and gives full drive name, device manager says it is there and operating properly etc etc, but the drive is not listed in windows explorer as others report. When I try to change the drive letter in disk management as the many other posts suggest, changing the name is not an option for this drive. My only options for the afflicted drive are "New simple volume", "New spanned volume" and "New striped volume" and of course properties. Here are a list of fixes I have tried without success.

1. Tried different USB ports and different USB cable.
2. Tried 4 different machines running Vista Ultimate SP1 (Desktop Core i7 6gb RAM), Vista Basic (Desktop Core 2 Duo, 4gb RAM), Vista Home Premium SP1 (Laptop Core 2 Duo 2gb RAM) and XP Home SP3 (Laptop Celeron 512gb RAM)
3. Stopped device with "safely remove hardware", uninstalled through device manager, rebooted with device connected.............
