Flash Drive: How Can Get Windows To Recognize This Device

Jan 25, 2008

I ordered a SanDisk 4.0 GB Cruzer Micro USB Flash Drive with my Vostro 400 computer running Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium Edition. When I inserted the Flash Drive in the USB port Windows asked me to install the driver for the device. There was no software included with the Flash Drive. I checked the box requesting Windows to look for a driver through the Windows Update feature. It came back and said no driver could be found for this device. I then went to the manufacturer's website but they don't have a driver listed for this particular Flash Drive. I called Dell and all they could tell me is that Windows should have recognized the device automatically. how I can get Windows to recognize this device. My brother has the same identical computer and Flash Drive and his installed without a problem

DVD-RW Drive: Windows Wouldn't Recognize Any Recordable Disks

May 14, 2009

I recently tried to burn a CD for the first time in a number of months. I'd always used Roxio software for burning with no real probs but this time I could not get the drive to recognize the CD-R disk. Decided to delete the Roxio software and use the built in Windows Vista burning program instead but kept getting same message asking me to insert a disk. Checked the DVD RW drive properties and found it was set up ok as a recordable drive. Decided that the drive must be kaput so I bought a new one. Installed that ok but still Windows wouldn't recognize any recordable disks of any form that I put in the drive. Installeed the Nero 8 software that came with the drive and still have the same problem using that!

External Hard Drive: Windows Cannot Access The Specified Device

Feb 28, 2009

I'm having a very strange problem with my External Hard Drives (I have 2). What happens is that I am unable to open either of the external Hard Drives in 'Computer' by double clicking them. It just doesn't do anything. But when I right click and select 'Open' it says: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I have checked the security details for the drives and I should be able to access them just fine. But here is where it gets weird. I can right click and select 'Explore' and it will open up like normal and I can browse the folders just fine! I used to be able to access these Hard Drives just fine before, but then they just went like this and I have no idea why. Since it happened to both Hard Drives simultaneously, I figure it is a Vista problem and not related to the specific drives.

Other symptoms are that the icon for the drives no longer shows up in 'Computer', although the name and disk space turn up fine. Also, I've noticed that the drives are operating much slower than usual, nearly a tenth of the normal read/write speed.

Flash Drive Has No Drive Letter, Not In Disk Management

Mar 23, 2008

I recently fresh installed my Vista Premium x86 on my homebuilt, and I had all my data backed up on my flash. When I plug it in, Vista dings like normal, but it is not in Windows Explorer and Disk Management. The Drive did have some Code 10 Device Cannot Start problems, but those are worked out when I disabled it and re-installed the driver, and the drive DOES show up in 'Safely Remove Hardware' and the Device Manager. I kinda diagnosed that it doesnt have a Drive Letter assigned, due to the flash drive working in my XP x64 dual-boot.

DVD-RW Drive Will Not Recognize

Aug 12, 2009

How come this happens? I will be using Windows Vista 32bit Home Premium and it simply will not recognize any DVD that I put in the DVD drive. I hit restart and the same thing happens. Then I hit shut down and let it shut down and then restart it with the power button and the DVD-RW drive and any disc in it will be read perfectly. This seems odd and disconcerting.

Wont Recognize Hard Drive

Jul 18, 2009

The drive is properly installed and is recognized correctly in the bios screen at startup. vista hp boots up. I right-click on my computer> manage. The computer management utility opens up and the new drive is recognized in the device manager but when I click on disk management I get a pop-up saying "an internal error has occured.

Restart the Disk Management snap-in." I hit ok. the same message comes up three more times, then I geta message saying "MMC has detected an error in a snap-in" and requeststhat I shut down and restart MMC, which I do and it just does the same again. Thats as far as I get. But here's the thing: I've been getting that error message way before I even installed the drive but had forgotten about it til now.

CD DVD Drive Doesnt Recognize Maxell CD-R Discs

Nov 6, 2008

My OS is Vista Home Premium 32 bits. My cd/dvd drive is HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM LG GSA-H55N SCSI. I have one strange problem with my cd/dvd drive since a couple of days.

---My cd/dvd drive doesn't recognize Maxell CD-R discs and certain movie dvds and doesn't read any music cds (manufacturized albums). When I insert the disk, there's this message ''Insert the disk on Drive E:''. But it doesn't have any problems with other CD-R and DVD-R like Memorex and Sony. Last week, October 26, I played a DVD movies (like Broadway melody) without any problems. I tried to play it again today it gives me the ''insert the disc message''. Is it due to some Windows update? or anything?

USB Flash Drive

Jan 15, 2008

I don't know if I'm posting this in the right spot...

I recently bought a 2GB (SanDisk Micro Cruzer) to use for ReadyBoost. It worked for a few days, but now it doesn't... I right click on the drive and click properties, and it says that the device is full, and when I click on the "ReadyBoost" tab it says that there isn't enough space available... yet I have nothing on the drive except for the empty folders and U3 installation that it came with.

If I format the drive, will it still be ReadyBoost capable? After all, that is the whole reason I bought the drive.

Flash Drive Corruption

May 5, 2010

I have a flash drive that I like to use. It is heavily used and often filled to almost all of its capacity. Just a few minutes ago I was using it with my XP computer and I opened up one of my folders to find that all of my files were gone to be replaced with folders and files with strange characters. If I try deleting anything, it says the directory does not exist. All that I can do is to format it. After formatting, I plugged it into my Vista but it said that it was corrupted or unreadable. I am wondering if it is a virus or if I should just get a new flash drive.

USB Flash Drive Became Read Only

May 23, 2008

I have a problem with a USB flash drive I have had for quite a while, that Windows Vista insists all the files and folders on it are read-only. I can create a new directory on the drive, but not rename it, and I can copy files onto the drive, but not delete them from the drive. I have found no way to correct the problem. For example if I look at the properties of folder on the drive and uncheck the "read only" checkbox, it does it, but is read-only the next time I try to use it. Does anyone know the source of this curious behaviour (which a few other people have also reported) and how to fix it?

USB 2.0 Flash Drive Does Not Work

Mar 26, 2008

Does anyone know the fix for this? I have a 250MB flash drive from the same manufacturer that works without a problem on a Vista workstation. I also have a new 1.0GB USB2.0 flash drive from the same manufacturer that works on my XP Pro workstation but does not work on my Vista workstation.

I have tried to reinstall the driver and found no driver for a USB drive. There have been many posts on the net about this problem with a few suggestions for fixes, but none have worked. Apparently Vista is blocking this USB drive. We have several USB drives of the same type and they are all blocked. Go to an XP Pro machine, and they work perfectly. This must be a new security app that Microsoft has added without any documentation to support it. It doesn't even show up as an error in event viewer.

Flash Drive No Longer Accessible

Aug 1, 2009

I have a Patriot, 4 GB X-mini drive that has worked for nearly a year. However, when I tried to access it yesterday from My Computer, it gave me the following message: Please insert a disk into removable disk (F:). I went to properties through My Computer, and the drive came up as:

Nameless
File System: Unknown
Used Space: 0 bytes
Free Space: 0 bytes
Capacity: 0 bytes

I tried to run an error check, but it keeps giving me this message: The disk check could not be performed because Windows cannot access the disk. I don't have any idea where to go from here, but due to the nature of some of the files I cannot access, it is important that I recover the data as soon as possible.

Copying From One PC To A Laptop Using A Flash Drive

Mar 23, 2008

I've copied 600 photos from a PC using Windows 2000 to a new laptop using Vista Home Basic. The files were copied from the PC to a flash drive and then to the laptop (to the "Pictures" directory). Trouble is, when this process started all the photos had file names, and when they got to Vista all they had was numbers (sequentially, from 1 to 597). The file names I'd given them are nowhere to be found, and I'm hoping someone can tell me how to fix this problem. Some of the files are very old and need the file namesw for anyone to have any clue about who or what the photo is.

USB External HDD & Flash Drive Timeout

Oct 4, 2009

I've got everything up and running with my Vista x64 pc (finally!) and I wanted to put my pictures/videos/music on it. I plugged in my 1tb (WD MyBook Essential 2.0, powered separately from pc) external hdd and heard the "beep" or whatever that sound is that Windows makes when it acknowledges a USB device. However, when I tried to open up "Computer" it froze (just that window, not the whole pc) and I realized it was still registering the drive. I have to wait about 10 minutes before I can actually pull up the contents of the drive. Every time I plug it back in it does the same thing. This DOES NOT happen on any of the 3 or 4 XP machines I have plugged this into...it is immediately recognized and I can view the contents instantly. When it comes to transferring files, it is VERY slow (approx. 2mbps) and in some cases, it won't let me transfer the file because it says the file/folder is corrupt. But if I plug it into my XP machine, the file/folder is fine and I can view or open it no problem.

I tried using a SanDisk 4gb flash drive to make sure it wasn't just my drive. It recognized this no problem (Windows made the "beep") and I could view the contents instantly, but I when I try to transfer files, it starts out fast (approx. 30mbps) then slows down, freezes, and eventually "loses" the drive. It says it can no longer find the drive. When I go to unplug it, I notice the flash drive's light is off and when I unplug it, I hear the Windows "beep" acknowledging that it was unplugged. I've updated all drivers I can find and the BIOS to 1101 and nothing has fixed this problem. It's very annoying that there are no USB specific drivers for this board.

Favorites Folder And Import Via Flash Drive

Jul 29, 2009

My questions are does Vista need to have a User name/ documents / favorites folder? And a User name/ favorites folder?

I had a problem importing favorites from my win XP IE 7 via a flash drive,( not a valid bookmark file error ) and after upgrading to IE 8, uninstalling IE 8 and reverting back to IE 7 I got my favorites into the User Name non documents folder.

I deleted the favs folder in documents which showed it as empty. Now I cannot re import my favs again from the flash drive.

I am trying to avoid the whole process of installing IE 8 and reverting to 7 again and I think I did some stupid deleting.

Can I just create a documents /folder name favorites and hope that IE will import form there? If so I tried it and got an error ( incomplete URL ).

Difficulties Backing Up E-mail To A Flash Drive

Mar 8, 2009

I'm trying to help a friend with Windows Vista copy her e-mail storage to a flash drive for backup. I found the location of the storage folder (which is not easy, it's listed under Tools, Options, Advanced). I tried copying the "Local Folders" folder, which is the master folder for all the e-mails, to the flash drive. It began prompting at each e-mail (all 11,000 of them), saying "if you copy this, it will be without the file properties. Proceed?" Copying all the e-mails without their file properties didn't sound like a good idea, so I stopped.

Then I thought of exporting the e-mails instead of copying them. I selected Local Folders in the e-mail program, File, Export, browse for destination. But the Save As dialog that opens only opened to a subfolder of her named personal folder, not to Computer. It was impossible to navigate the Save As dialog to Computer and thence to the flash drive. What kind of Save As dialog opens to a subfolder and refuses to let you navigate up the hierarchy to where you want to get to?
