Cannot See Windows 2000 Workstation From Machine

I setup a two computer network with a windows 2000 computer and a vista business computer. They have same workgroup name and I shared folders, etc. I can see Vista computer fine from 2000 computer but cannot see 2000 computer under network on vista computer. I mapped drive of 2000 computer on Vista computer so I can access it but would like to see it under network in order to do some other things. Is there any reason I cannot see windows 2000 computer in Vista under network?

I have to install Windows Vista Business over Windows 2000 on several school computers, then roll it back to XP. Do I need to remove the 2000 first? Need advice on the easiest way to accomplish this

I've connected my Windows home premium and the 2000 to the router and Vista can not find my 2000 from the net. I do get an ping reply from both directions. I have them in the same workroup (I guess if it is as easy to just name the groups the same?). All I want to do is atleast to share files between the computers. All firewalls are gone (sortof). The TTPL or what ever topology thingy it is, is on. As you can see, I'm not made for creating home networks so please, be gentle. Or even better, if you could do/link me to an good tutorial.

at work we're still using a Windows 2000 server as our DC. We have rolled out our first Vista laptop, and we're having trouble getting it to join the domain. When I try adding the computer to the domain I get the following error: "The format for the specified network name is invalid". I am typing in the domain name correctly, and the computer name is simply the user's last name.

I have a Home Network with wired 2 - desktops and wifi 2 - laptops and a network printer. One desktop is running Vista Ultimate and the rest have XP Pro. On the Vista desktop I got the discovery on; file and printer sharing on. When I check the network screen on the Vista machine all other workstations on the network are visible and shared directories accessible including the printer.
The same thing with the XP workstatins except that the Vista machine is not visible on the Network screen of the XP workstations. However, if I go to a XP machine and map a shared directory on the Vista machine it is successfuk and be able to access the directory on the Vista machine. Is there a step I missed that the Vista machine is not visible on the XP machines.

We have to upgrade about 100 XP OEM XP professional workstations that are in a domain environment to Vista Business. Most of the workstations have a 'standard' mix of office suite software. A few may have some local data. Does anyone know about how long to upgrade an 'average workstation'' so we can budget time and resources for doing the 100.

Why is it, that when I log on to my Vista workstation with a userID other thany my local administrator, I cannot access the External Drive? I can access it fine when i logon with my local admin account.

When I browse for a printer on the network I can see the workgroup, I can see the PC with the printer, but I don't see the printer show up under the PC in the Add Printer Wizard dialog. This was easy for me back when there were two machines running XP.
I have installed the x86 printer driver on the Vista machine. Would this be easier if I upgraded the Vista machine to Windows 7?

Computer 1 is my home desktop running Vista Premium SP1. It is on the 'workgroup' workgroup. Computer 2 is my work laptop (on docking station) running XP Pro SP2. It is on a domain called 'amer'. There is an HP LaserJet 2100 connected to the Vista machine. It is shared. This is a wired network with D-Link router. At first I thought it was a sharing issue when I could not print from the XP machine to the printer on the Vista machine. But then I realized it is a network issue because if I try to browse the Vista machine from the XP machine I get the 'no access, you may not have permission', etc. message. To make it work, I :
1. start the XP machine (assuming the Vista machine is already running)
2. wait about 15 minutes for the Vista machine to see that the XP machine is there.
3. Browse to and open the XP machine from the Vista machine
4. Go to the XP machine, open its workgroup (amer) and then open the XP machine
5. Wait a minute or so, then while still on the XP machine, navigate to
Vista machine's workgroup ('workgroup') and open the workgroup. If the Vista machine appears I am good to go. I don't need to browse it, it just needs to appear.........................

I've heard conflicting reports as to whether Office 2000 will run successfully under Vista. In the hope that they are compatible, I installed Office 2000 and then installed (from the Microsoft site) updates SR-1a and SP-2. Then I downloaded SP3, but when I attempted to install it, I got the message "The expected version of the product was not found on your system." Is there some reason for this, or should I just try again? I looked for, but could not find, a newsgroup that deals with Office 2000 -- is there an alternative newsgroup that would be better for these questions?

Its been about three months since I've given up trying to network my Vista machine with my XP machine, but I thought I would try it again. here are my symptoms again:
*Vista (Ultimate) machine cannot see XP (Home SP2) machine.
*XP machine can see and access the Vista machine.
*Xp machine shows up in the Vista Network Map, but not the Network Folder.
*Both machines can ping each other.
*I can access the XP machine via IP address, I can access the shared folder but not a shared printer.
*IPConfig for Vista shows that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled even though it is enabled in the Network Adaptor Properties dialog. (NetBIOS over TCP/IP always enabled, the middle radio button)
Other information:
*Everything worked as it should once apon a time, then it all went to Hell. It could have been an update, tweaking software, or antivirus setting, but I notcie too late to do anything about it.
*I know it can't be that I don't have the same User/Password on both machines (I tried it anyway but it still didn't work), because it worked awhile back without having the same accounts on both machines.
*I had Bitdefender 2008 on the Vista machine, the Firewall log had entries that the ports 138 and 139 were being refused, despite having the XP machine being on the trusted list (by its IP address). So I uninstalled the Antivirus, but the problem persists.
*The XP machine has Zone Alarm Internet Security.................

I have a Dell XPS 420 desktop with a 750gb hd and a 1tb hd, 4 gb ram . I created playlists in windows media player. I tried to burn a dvd yesterday with ROXIO but couldn't figure it out. so I used Windows dvd maker. Then I tried unsuccessfully to add music. I did burn the picture slideshow successfully however most of my music won't open. I have some pictures in my music files and some music in my video files. Everything is messed up. How do I restore the machine WINDOWS ULTIMATE.

I am running Windows Vista Home basic on an E Machine. I am new to computers and don't know very much. I need an instruction book. For instance: I am trying to learn about screen shots. One web site said click on PrtScrn and it would put the imange on the clip board. I go to msprint and there are two files listed (I clicked twice) I want to delete them and start over. I need a book that gives me smiple directions about things like that.

I have 4 PC's running Win XP and use Windows 98 Backup to transfer files and keep things in sync. One of the computers is at a remote location during the summer so I can't use a network to transfer files. All computers have identical file structures and I've found that using Win 98 backup works great since it allows data compression and I simply have to make a backup, transfer the .qic file to a CD and then do a restore. The XP backup software does not allow data compression unless you are backing up to a tape drive.
To get Win 98 backup to work on XP I carefully transfer the appropriate files that are used by Win 98 backup to the c:windowssystem32 directory and, most importantly, I set program compatibility for Windows 98. I am faced with replacing my old laptop with a new one and it seems that it will be difficult to buy one with Win XP. So my question is: Is it possible that Windows 98 backup will work on a Vista machine? Does Vista have program compatibility mode that can be set like XP has?

I just want to share with you my thoughts about smart card authentication implementation in Vista. I know that smart card logon, also known as strong authentication or two- actor authentication, can be performed on a machine that is connected to a domain. And in Vista SP1 it's been added the support for biometric factor authentication so that, with the appropriate security tokens, strong three-factor authentication can be performed through Kerberos on machines connected to a domain.
Said that I really can't understand why Microsoft doesn't give a standard option, included natively in her oss, to enable strong authentication in stand alone machines that are not connected to a domain. I try to explain in details what I mean. It happens often, for security reasons, that companies have stand alone pcs not connected to the internet and to the company domain. From my point of view achieving a strong authentication on a stand alone machine is not so complicated; Let's think at this scenario:.................

I have a client with a stand alone vista workstation that would like to block almost all websites from anyone using the laptop. I don't use workstation level products and this is a case outside my normal scope - can anyone recommend a product that allows an Admin to setup permitted sites for "user" level accounts on a vista workstation?

Has anyone on here successfully installed PhotoDraw 2000 v2 on Vista 64-bit? If so, how did you do it? How can I install this? I (will) have Vista Home Pre 64 (in a few days). (PS: I have no clue about dual boots or compatibility mode...actually I've never even seen Vista in person before.)
This program was/is one of the BEST! PS: Win XP wasn't exactly friendly towards PhotoDraw 2000 v2 (so I've read). And Office 2007 isn't exactly friendly towards it either (so I've read).

I miss the search engine/program from win 2000 and XP. if I look for say... a PDF or cab or list all .exe, .pps, .xls with the word "setup" BOOM there they are. It's just not the same. I have been using { locate32 & super finder } just wondering if there are any others.

I uninstalled Office 2007 trial version and loaded on my trusty copy of Office 2000 Premium (I custom installed without loading on Outlook as I know this may cause problems). Everything seems to work OK except Word. It opens, then hangs, then I get a 'Not Responding' message come up. I have looked a few other fixes -: Re naming Normal.dot (this does not seem to appear in any files) and I have changed the default printer (that didn't work either). I can get word to open if I type in winword.exe /a but I know this is only a temporary fix.

I've got a multiboot system involving, Windows 98, Windows 2000, XP, and Vista. For some reason, 2000, Vista and XP want to check the FAT32 partition on which 98 is installed, even though 98 doesn't feel the need to do this. Is it safe to allow this? If not, how do I stop them from trying to do the check (without having to hit a key each time they boot)? I tried doing scandisk under 98 to clear whatever ckeck disk flag has been set but they still want to check.

I would like to get vista to use the login style used in Win 2000 ... ctrl+alt+del gives a login box in which to enter the user name and password.
Win XP Pro had this option also, but, it's default was like vista (pictures showing all users).
I have been able to get the ctrl+alt+del part but instead of the login box I still get pictures.

IObit Game Booster 1.1 - TechSpot Downloads. Very rarely do I find little free apps that actually do anything useful, but this app closes down all 2000, xp and vista processes not needed during gaming. I got an extra 7fps in Far Cry2 small ranch very high benchmark. That's the same increase as overclocking from 3.16 to 3.8 on my Vista 64 x48 e8500 with gtx280. You probably all know about it already, but I only found it recently.
