I use Vista Business. I've set up my Windows Fax and Scan to automatically answer calls. Is there a way to redirect calls to my answer machine if it is not a fax call?
View 5 RepliesYou wouldn't waste money if you install 4GB REGARDLESS of Windows (starting
w/Vista) or hardware (starting w/post-2006) you have, but you can do more,
read my article:
As you know from Electrical Engineering basics, theoretical memory space is
defined by the address bus width. In a binary system it's simply 2^N where
N is the address width.
In plain English:
If your Windows is 32-bit it can theoretically manage 2^32 = 4GB.
If your hardware (e.g. Intel945 chipset?) is 32 bit but Windows is 64 bit,
or hardware is 64bit but Windows is 32 bit it's still 4GB as obviously the
lower address width limits the system, and disregards 64 bit elsewhere.
The practical numbers are somewhat different:
a) Windows 32-bit claims a whopping 0.75GB for itself ("untouchable" by
you - the user) due to I/O overhead in a 4GB memory space leaving you with
ONLY 3.25GB of usable memory
Too long to explain but just accept it as a fact - almost a Gigabyte is
eaten by the BIOS, I/O, etc. memory addresses your applications cannot use.
b) On the upside you can go over 4GB EVEN in a 32-bit Windows if this
Windows is a Server, and not a Client version.
There's a 99.9% chance you running a Client and not Server Windows, so your
usable memory is therefore:
3.25GB But I don't know exactly what Win version you run, so you can
calculate by understanding this article, i.e if you're so advanced as to
have Windows SERVER edition, then even in 32-bit configuration it can "page"
more than 4GB.
How much did you pay for 4GB and how much WOULD you pay for 3GB?
The $dollar difference as of September2009 is NOT worth any regret.
You'd lose pennies, stop worrying & have at least 4GB. Also better if you
install memory modules "symmetrically" which, as a consequence, also means
you'd have an even number of memory units.
In plain English, it's better to install two modules 2GB+2GB = 4GB, than
2GB+1GB = 3GB which is assymetric, although such may not longer be of any
importance for new computers, in the past it was an issue. Still I
recommend not to play with assymetry for DDR2 memory, I don't know about
DDR3 and this example covers 4GB. You might have 4GB+4GB=8GB for example,
for 64-bit Windows AND 64-bit hardware as a requirement.
Why would anyone need 8GB?
Well, I even need MORE - 16GB for CAD/Engineering & Graphics design work, so I can lots of memory running heavy-duty engineering simulations.
Plus it stimulates industry (but hurts environment)
So memory space is defined by 3 factors:
OS bit width
Hardware bitwidth
Whether your Windows addressing is using virtuial/paging/etc to bypass
normal addressing limted to 2^N - i.e. is it a regular Win Client or Server,
and how much your Windows wastes for itself (overhead)
Just get 4GB and be done with it.
BUT IF YOU NEED 1GB+1GB MODULES = 2GB of laptop, DDR667 speed memory, let me
know - I can ship for free (you just pay shipping by Post Office in USA or
abroad), I removed them and replaced with 8GB on my laptop.
Running Vista on an HP...When I get the pop up to compact the mail I click OK and it gets about 3 quarters of the way thru and I get the message Windows Mail has stopped working and Windows is searching for an answer. The answer was DEP (Data Execution Protection)was shutting it down to protect my computer..What's the problem??? Norton internet Security up to date and nothing found with complete system scan..Vista up to date as well.

Clicked okay and blah blah blah didn't think twice about it, until I tried to redirect it again. Now I get the error message "cannot redirect descendant to parent". I saw a tutorial for this but my issue has a hidden detail..
When I click onto my Local Disk, drive C in "My Computer", go to "Users" then "Matthew" all is fine.. But then in my start menu when I click the newly redirected Pictures folder that now is Matthew, it contains all the files is should, PLUS a copy of "Matthew" again.. So on the top of the window it say "Users>Matthew>Matthew" yet when I go through "C>Users>Matthew" there is not second Matthew file, IT ONLY APPEARS WHEN I GO THROUGH THE START MENU.. Also, when I click "properties" on the first Matthew file, it says its size is 2.73gb, yet none of the files it contains even amount to 500mb..
Just this message to say that we don't find qualified people at Microsoft in Switzerland and in France Support to answer to the following question: Which product is qualified to install Multi-language pack ? We don't find any information saying there many kind of software of Vista Ultimate release. We just have the windows vista ultimate with sp1 included ....And the problem that is the second product we bought and we can't return ... Swiss support don't answer and is unpolite and do close the phone. France support can't do commercial activities in Switzerland. What going on ?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit version. I moved my Documents folder from the C: drive to my E: Data drive some time ago. When I open the Start Menu I now see "Data (E" on the button that used to read "Documents." I moved the folder to E: by right-clicking on the default "Documents" label, entering Properties/Location and indicating that I wanted the new location to be E: . The system did this, placing the Documents folder under E:.
This has not caused any problem until I tried to open Windows Fax & Scan today and I received a dialog window reading: "Windows Fax and Scan cannot run as it cannot access your documents folder. Please ensure that Windows Fax and Scan can access that folder." That's all very logical, but it doesn't tell me how to do this. How can I point Fax and Scan to the new location of my Documents folder?
In XP I had fax console. Where is it in Vista. I have been all through the program files and don't see it. Does this self install with the installation of Vista, or must I add it from the installation DVD. There also seems to be something called windows fax and scan, but I can't find that either.

Shortly after I purchased a new computer and the supplier loaded Vista Ultimate at the factory and used my key number to install and activate what may have been an OEM version. View 4 Replies View RelatedI can't get Windows Fax and Scan (WFS) to use the contacts from Outlook 2007. Running Vista Ultimate 64 on an SBS 2003 network. Using the server's shared fax. This worked when I had Vista Ultimate 32 installed. Unsuccesful steps I have tried. I have run a repair install of Office. I have deleted my old profile and created a new one. Please note that since I am running on SBS 2003 premium I use Exchange 2003 so I don't lose my contacts, e-mails, etc. when I delete the profile. I have rebooted. I have deleted the fax account and added it back. When I click on the address book icon my contacts appear and those with fax numbers are listed. What I get for contacts are the one created by Windows Mail for me. I have never used Windows Mail on this PC.

and i am sure i have connected with a CAPABLE phone wire. the outcome: the document is pending by administrator.
When trying to launch win fax & scan I get an error: "Windows Fax and Scan cannot run as it cannot access your documents folder ..."
The MyDocuments folder is in my F: drive partition. I'd like to keep it there since that where I store my data files for back-up, but I'm willing to create another Documents folder where fax & scan can access it.

"Windows Fax and Scan" (WFS) does not allow me to choose Outlook Contacts in order to populate the fax number field. WFS is using Windows Contact instead Outlook Contacts. I've tried everything of which I could think, and read every forum I could find on the web.
Steps I've tried:
1)Control Panel-> Programs-> Default Programs-> Set Default Programs->
Outlook I Checked all boxes (6 extensions, 6 protocols, 1 start menu).Technically,they re grayed out but checked.
When I browse for a printer on the network I can see the workgroup, I can see the PC with the printer, but I don't see the printer show up under the PC in the Add Printer Wizard dialog. This was easy for me back when there were two machines running XP.
I have installed the x86 printer driver on the Vista machine. Would this be easier if I upgraded the Vista machine to Windows 7?
Computer 1 is my home desktop running Vista Premium SP1. It is on the 'workgroup' workgroup. Computer 2 is my work laptop (on docking station) running XP Pro SP2. It is on a domain called 'amer'. There is an HP LaserJet 2100 connected to the Vista machine. It is shared. This is a wired network with D-Link router. At first I thought it was a sharing issue when I could not print from the XP machine to the printer on the Vista machine. But then I realized it is a network issue because if I try to browse the Vista machine from the XP machine I get the 'no access, you may not have permission', etc. message. To make it work, I :
1. start the XP machine (assuming the Vista machine is already running)
2. wait about 15 minutes for the Vista machine to see that the XP machine is there.
3. Browse to and open the XP machine from the Vista machine
4. Go to the XP machine, open its workgroup (amer) and then open the XP machine
5. Wait a minute or so, then while still on the XP machine, navigate to
Vista machine's workgroup ('workgroup') and open the workgroup. If the Vista machine appears I am good to go. I don't need to browse it, it just needs to appear.........................
Windows just stops during virus scan (Trend Micro)- eventually have to crash it Sometimes during logon, Windows just wanders away....either have to crash it or eventually it will reboot. Cannot boot in safe mode. It will get so far in loading dll files and then reboots it self after a period of inactivity. Cannot download latest Windows security updates.
The symptoms sound like the conflicker worm so I've tried the Sysclean tool recommended by Trend Micro with the latest pattern file. The system stops at some point just as it does with the virus scan and I have to crash it. If I log on to the latop and just surf or play games, no problem. I've also run sfc /scannow which reports no problems.
This friend of mine has real problem with her laptop (Vista sp1)it was first noticed when her anti-virus did a scheduled scan. The anti-virus program hung whilst scanning the System32 folder.I tried with Windows Defender. Same thing, it hangs after a while.
I de-activated her anti-virus program (forgot the name. Not a well known brand) and downloaded/installed Avast, to no avail it also hangs whilst scanning the System32 folder.I also tried to scan using SFC/scannow. The PC freezes at 68 % of the scan.I tried these different manipulation in safe mode.Same results and everytime, the PC Freezes and I am obliged to do a hard stop/restart.
Its been about three months since I've given up trying to network my Vista machine with my XP machine, but I thought I would try it again. here are my symptoms again:
*Vista (Ultimate) machine cannot see XP (Home SP2) machine.
*XP machine can see and access the Vista machine.
*Xp machine shows up in the Vista Network Map, but not the Network Folder.
*Both machines can ping each other.
*I can access the XP machine via IP address, I can access the shared folder but not a shared printer.
*IPConfig for Vista shows that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled even though it is enabled in the Network Adaptor Properties dialog. (NetBIOS over TCP/IP always enabled, the middle radio button)
Other information:
*Everything worked as it should once apon a time, then it all went to Hell. It could have been an update, tweaking software, or antivirus setting, but I notcie too late to do anything about it.
*I know it can't be that I don't have the same User/Password on both machines (I tried it anyway but it still didn't work), because it worked awhile back without having the same accounts on both machines.
*I had Bitdefender 2008 on the Vista machine, the Firewall log had entries that the ports 138 and 139 were being refused, despite having the XP machine being on the trusted list (by its IP address). So I uninstalled the Antivirus, but the problem persists.
*The XP machine has Zone Alarm Internet Security.................
I setup a two computer network with a windows 2000 computer and a vista business computer. They have same workgroup name and I shared folders, etc. I can see Vista computer fine from 2000 computer but cannot see 2000 computer under network on vista computer. I mapped drive of 2000 computer on Vista computer so I can access it but would like to see it under network in order to do some other things. Is there any reason I cannot see windows 2000 computer in Vista under network?

I tried to burn a dvd yesterday with ROXIO but couldn't figure it out. so I used Windows dvd maker. Then I tried unsuccessfully to add music. I did burn the picture slideshow successfully however most of my music won't open. I have some pictures in my music files and some music in my video files. Everything is messed up. View 4 Replies View RelatedI have 4 PC's running Win XP and use Windows 98 Backup to transfer files and keep things in sync. One of the computers is at a remote location during the summer so I can't use a network to transfer files. All computers have identical file structures and I've found that using Win 98 backup works great since it allows data compression and I simply have to make a backup, transfer the .qic file to a CD and then do a restore. The XP backup software does not allow data compression unless you are backing up to a tape drive.
To get Win 98 backup to work on XP I carefully transfer the appropriate files that are used by Win 98 backup to the c:windowssystem32 directory and, most importantly, I set program compatibility for Windows 98. I am faced with replacing my old laptop with a new one and it seems that it will be difficult to buy one with Win XP. So my question is: Is it possible that Windows 98 backup will work on a Vista machine? Does Vista have program compatibility mode that can be set like XP has?
I just want to share with you my thoughts about smart card authentication implementation in Vista. I know that smart card logon, also known as strong authentication or two- actor authentication, can be performed on a machine that is connected to a domain. And in Vista SP1 it's been added the support for biometric factor authentication so that, with the appropriate security tokens, strong three-factor authentication can be performed through Kerberos on machines connected to a domain.
Said that I really can't understand why Microsoft doesn't give a standard option, included natively in her oss, to enable strong authentication in stand alone machines that are not connected to a domain. I try to explain in details what I mean. It happens often, for security reasons, that companies have stand alone pcs not connected to the internet and to the company domain. From my point of view achieving a strong authentication on a stand alone machine is not so complicated; Let's think at this scenario:.................
I have the following issue and hope that somebody can give me a hint about what might be going on! My system has two raid 1 arrays - one is running on XP Professional SP3 the other one is running on Vista x64 Ultimate SP1. When I start my virtual machines (either from the Virtual PC console or when double-clicking the *.vmc files) than everything is working fine on XP and the virtual machines are booting and running as expected. However, on Vista the following is happening (and I hope somebody has an idea):
1. Starting the Virtual machines from the console leads to an immediate reboot of my host machine (I can't even see any boot screen of the virtual machine - it is like clicking start in the VPC console -- > reboot of host).
