Stops During Virus Scan, Cannot Download Windows Security Updates
Apr 9, 2009Windows just stops during virus scan (Trend Micro)- eventually have to crash it Sometimes during logon, Windows just wanders away....either have to crash it or eventually it will reboot. Cannot boot in safe mode. It will get so far in loading dll files and then reboots it self after a period of inactivity. Cannot download latest Windows security updates.
The symptoms sound like the conflicker worm so I've tried the Sysclean tool recommended by Trend Micro with the latest pattern file. The system stops at some point just as it does with the virus scan and I have to crash it. If I log on to the latop and just surf or play games, no problem. I've also run sfc /scannow which reports no problems.

Jun 23, 2008I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit version. I moved my Documents folder from the C: drive to my E: Data drive some time ago. When I open the Start Menu I now see "Data (E" on the button that used to read "Documents." I moved the folder to E: by right-clicking on the default "Documents" label, entering Properties/Location and indicating that I wanted the new location to be E: . The system did this, placing the Documents folder under E:.
This has not caused any problem until I tried to open Windows Fax & Scan today and I received a dialog window reading: "Windows Fax and Scan cannot run as it cannot access your documents folder. Please ensure that Windows Fax and Scan can access that folder." That's all very logical, but it doesn't tell me how to do this. How can I point Fax and Scan to the new location of my Documents folder?

Shortly after I purchased a new computer and the supplier loaded Vista Ultimate at the factory and used my key number to install and activate what may have been an OEM version. Mar 7, 2009I can't get Windows Fax and Scan (WFS) to use the contacts from Outlook 2007. Running Vista Ultimate 64 on an SBS 2003 network. Using the server's shared fax. This worked when I had Vista Ultimate 32 installed. Unsuccesful steps I have tried. I have run a repair install of Office. I have deleted my old profile and created a new one. Please note that since I am running on SBS 2003 premium I use Exchange 2003 so I don't lose my contacts, e-mails, etc. when I delete the profile. I have rebooted. I have deleted the fax account and added it back. When I click on the address book icon my contacts appear and those with fax numbers are listed. What I get for contacts are the one created by Windows Mail for me. I have never used Windows Mail on this PC.

The MyDocuments folder is in my F: drive partition. I'd like to keep it there since that where I store my data files for back-up, but I'm willing to create another Documents folder where fax & scan can access it.

"Windows Fax and Scan" (WFS) does not allow me to choose Outlook Contacts in order to populate the fax number field. WFS is using Windows Contact instead Outlook Contacts. I've tried everything of which I could think, and read every forum I could find on the web.
Steps I've tried:
1)Control Panel-> Programs-> Default Programs-> Set Default Programs->
Outlook I Checked all boxes (6 extensions, 6 protocols, 1 start menu).Technically,they re grayed out but checked.

May 12, 2010This friend of mine has real problem with her laptop (Vista sp1)it was first noticed when her anti-virus did a scheduled scan. The anti-virus program hung whilst scanning the System32 folder.I tried with Windows Defender. Same thing, it hangs after a while.
I de-activated her anti-virus program (forgot the name. Not a well known brand) and downloaded/installed Avast, to no avail it also hangs whilst scanning the System32 folder.I also tried to scan using SFC/scannow. The PC freezes at 68 % of the scan.I tried these different manipulation in safe mode.Same results and everytime, the PC Freezes and I am obliged to do a hard stop/restart.

If you like to stay on the bleeding edge of technology (and you’re running Vista) you may want to consider modifying two registry keys on your system so that you can participate in the Vista SP2 Beta program. To join the program all you have to do is download this batch file, and run it on your Vista machine as an administrator (right click - Run as administrator). Then just check for available Windows Updates (it may take 30 minutes or so for it to show up in the Windows Updates).
Think carefully whether you want to do this or not. There will likely be some bugs that could cause problems with your system, but at the very least it will cause Vista to expire on 4/2/2010 (or around then). Plus it will place the “Evaluation copy” message on your desktop wallpaper. You can always uninstall Vista SP2 to remove the evaluation message and expiration date, but it’s important to know what you’re getting into before you try to install it.
So what’s new in Vista SP2? Here’s a brief rundown that the Vista blog provided last week:Windows Vista SP2 adds Windows Search 4.0 for faster and improved relevancy in searches. Windows Vista SP2 contains the Bluetooth 2.1 Feature Pack supporting the most recent specification for Bluetooth Technology. Ability to record data on to Blu-Ray media natively in Windows Vista. Adds Windows Connect Now (WCN) to simplify Wi-Fi Configuration. Windows Vista SP2 enables the exFAT file system to support UTC timestamps, which allows correct file synchronization across time zones. Windows Vista SP2 is expected to be released in final form sometime in the first half of 2009. Judging by the expiration date of Vista SP2 Beta I’d say that sounds about right.

This above has not worked for me. I have a 64bit vista under parameters they have dword which is for 32bit and qword for 64bit I chose qword but i was not able to type in IRPStactSize so I'm stuck. May 30, 2008I've been getting very slow download speeds on vista and have done everything I could to fix it. I have disabled the tcp auto tuning following this guide, turned off the QoS thing following this guide, turned off my phishing filter and firewall, switched over to a static IP, and maybe some other stuff i cant remember but in the end I still get terrible download speeds compared to my computer that runs XP I went to speedtest.net to make sure I wasnt crazy...Vista: ~750 download XP: ~11600 download the upload and ping were the same.
Both computers are wireless (same distance from router) but I think that my be where the problem lies...I have a linksys wireless pci card and they apparently dont have drivers for my card for 64 bit vista, so I found this post and was able to get a driver to get my card working and get online. Im not saying this is the problem but just throwing it out there just incase it may be.So my question is what could be the cause of my slow downloading and what can I do to fix it?

Apr 10, 2008Is there a way, using IMAP, to limit Windows Mail to only deal with the most recent X messages? I have a GMail account with in the region of 24,000 messages but on a day to day basis, I'm only really interested in the most recent few hundred. Archiving isn't a solution as there are filters involved and an archived message with a filter applied is still in that filter, certain filters are up to thousands of messages as well. A most recent 200 messages option would be fantastic.
