I cannot open any types of files sent by email in Windows Mail or Hotmail, of downloaded documents through IE. Using a pretty new Dell laptop with Vista, really need to get this sorted as I am a distance learning students with loads of journal articles to download!
Recently started using vista on a new computer. When receiving email in vista mail I cannot open attachments with .pps file. It will open if I save it. The file extension is correct in the directory for vista to open it. I noticed a similar problem in the forum for .doc files but the fix for that did not seem to address the .pps files.
Whenever I request a "File|Open" or "File|Save" from any application, the mini-Windows-Explorer dialog box that opens freezes and hangs the entire application. Happens with almost all applications. Not limited to just Microsoft programs. It does not matter if I like change the download folder or if I rt click always the same.
Back when it was under warranty Hp tells me to just restore to original settings. I hate to do that. But I am about to see that this might be the only fix for it. (But I am hoping not.) I think it started a long time ago when I was changing the USB ports I used for my external Hard drive and it changed drive letter. (maybe maybe not.. just seems I remember that being something that had happened when I first recall things hanging...) anyway I have all drives in the place I want them now and this issue still happens even if I dont have that external drive plugged in.
I had to reinstall Vista on my computer. Previously I used Outlook. I can't find the activation code so I want to try Windows Mail. I saved my Outlook email pst file. Is there a way to get Windows Mail to open that file.
Trying to open a Word file, get message "Windows can't find so-and-so file". Similarly, trying to open it programmatically in Excel VBA, I get the same message. But if I right-click and select "Open with" and pick Microsoft Windows, it works.
Using Vista Home Premium with SP1. I cannot open a .dat file and cannot set an association to open it because .dat is not listed in the Set Association menu. How do I get .dat listed so that I can set an association to it?
Could anyone tell me why pdf files are so slow to access (page down, scroll down/up, etc. Didn't notice this on xp, it is incredibally slow on Vista 32
I downloaded a very big torrent file (size: 6GB). This torrent contains a zip file. When I open the zip file, all the files are with extension .bin. Is there any possible way to open these bin files?
Whenever I open a .pdf file, whether in Acrobat or within a web browser, my computer suddenly goes into low-color (8-bit) mode, and I have to go to personalization/display settings to correct it. I have the most recent version of Acrobat, and have tried uninstalling and reinstalling it, but this still happens every time I open a .pdf! Is there anything I can do to stop this, and prevent it from happening in the future?
When i receive a PPS file in Windows Mail, and click on it, it does not open, this is despite the fact that i have PPS Viewer 2007 loaded and have set the default in the default Associations panel to XML Converter (If i set it to Power POint Viewer then it says no program associated with it) If i try to open the pps file then it asks me to save it first then i can view it... Also, i saw previous posts about registry entries not set to open but mine appear to be set to open..
All of a sudden I cannot open email attachments from people I've received then from years. But I can open attachments from places of business like JC Penney, Barnes and Noble, etc. I haven't downloaded IE8 yet because after reading some comments here, I fear it will complicate the problem. Do you think it's some kind of Trojan?
When I get a PPS, I can not open it from the e mail unlike in Windows XP, I have to save it and than open it. See attachment. I tried to find the "Association control panel", but did not find it. I have the MS PPS viewer.
I've seen similar post on this and tried to follow the replies for the fix but didn't work for me so I thought I'd post my scenerio. I downloaded some software from a company named X10. It's for monitoring security cameras from a remote location. The software is name Vangaurd. I'm trying to uninstall it but I keep getting "cannot open log install. log file". I notice there is not a folder for this in my program files, therefore I do not see an "unistall". Does anybody know how I can uninstall this? I am using Windows Vista.
This pops up when i try to open Control Panel>>Administrative tools>>event viewer: "MMC can't open the file C:WindowsSystem32eventvwr.msc. This may be because the file does not exist, it is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file." I have tried everything that I know about to solve this problem. I have googled the problem, and came up to the solution of running "regsvr32 msxml3.dll". When i run regsvr32 msxml3.dll(on some forums i have read it should be the solution) I get another new error code:...........
I want to search for a file and when I find it, I want to be able to right click and select open file location so a explorer window will open and I can see where the file is located...this used to exist in xp search.
I am trying to open a downloaded file and just can not seem to... I think it is in ZIP format. I have Vista PH and the file is a font - it will not open in Paint.Net or any other program and I am not able to un-zip it.
I received an e-mail with attached PPS file. When I clck to open the file, a window pops up with the following. This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel. How do I do this?
A friend left a garbled message on my telephone answering machine asking me for help but I don't use Vista or iTunes, so I'm hoping some kind soul on here can help. Basically any file he downloads (it may be a photo of his grandson sent as an email attachment in jpg format, or a program such as skype.exe, or a pdf document) cannot be opened. When double-clicked, any downloaded file opens up iTunes and presents the message "iTunes cannot open this file". I know it's not much to go on but his message recorded badly.
So apparently I had a massive amount of viruses on my computer, of which I recently purchased Vista anti-virus to remove them all. This worked great for a bit but now whenever I try opening any program/file it asks me which program I want to use to open it. This includes .exe files, along with things like IE, iTunes. Windows Media Player, and many others. I have downloaded a patch that is supposed to fix this, but when I go to open the file (which is a .exe one) it once again asks me which program I want to open it with.
this may sound dumb, but how do i change blabla.zip.txt file in to blabla.zip? because for some reason, i can only change this blabla.zip,,because the txt extension is hided from the file's name...When i try to rename it i can only rename the name of the file, not the extensions, there will probably be an easy solution, but im stuck right now
I have vista home premium and use Windows Mail. I have 3 users on my computer. One of the users can't open email attachments, any type. He can save attachments and open them from the folder, but can't just click and open. I have the same problem as the administrator occasionally. When it happens, I exit the email, re-open and it works fine. No error messages, just nothing happens when I click on the attachment. I have Internet Explorer 8, any chance that has something to do with it? I've downloaded updates, checked settings, everything is in order as far as I can tell. In security, attachements are allowed and it's set for Internet Zone.
I cannot open .pps files within my email. {says no program associated with this file to perform] I have gone to default programs file anf it is set properly. If I save the .pps file to another folder I am able to open it.
I've been trying to figure out how to keep Windows Mail from automatically opening the next email in my mailbox. For instance, I open an email from my mailbox... after reading it I then delete it... the next message in my mailbox then automatically opens up.
When I try to open a link in my email this happens a box opens up and it says Windows cannot find. this happens for everylink I try to open in my email I have Mozilla Firefox as my default but I changed it to IE and it did the same thing I have Vista Home. Eventhough the box comes up with the error it does eventually open up the link but I always get the error box first.
In the original outlook express the message "envelope" is shut till you click on it to open the message. How can I get the same thing with vista message mail. It is impossible to see what I have alread read.
