Getting The UAC Shield Off Desktop Icon
Apr 13, 2008I recently installed a game in Vista x64. It's an older game, but runs fine. Only problem is the desktop icon has the damn UAC shield and it pesters me to allow it to run every time. I trust this app, so I want it to just run. Is there a setting for the app to make it not bug me for UAC every time I run it?

I loaded a program (Corel Painter IX) and placed a shortcut on my desktop... Windows has seen fit to place a little "Windows Security shield" over the icon. When I look at the shortcut's properties, the icon appears without the shield.
Why has it done this, and how can I address it?
Disabled UAC - What About The Red Shield Icon In The Tray?
Jun 25, 2009Running Vista Ultimate - I was ordered to disable UAC. Now I have the little red shield in the tray. How can I get rid of it for just the UAC notification? I still want it to bark at me when the virus defs (AVG) go out of date and it can't update for whatever reason.

Jan 4, 2010Cannot see a Win 7 MS newsgroup so I thought I would ask here, When I use Start Computer I can see all my drives such C: D; the card reader slots and the external hard drive. All but one of these display with an icon that look like a hard dive. But C: display a document icon - rectangle with top right corner folded and holding a 'window' with 6 coloured circles. Any reason you this should be? It is not causing any errors I can detect but looks odd Windows Home Premium 64-bit on an HP computer

Sep 30, 2009This is a minor annoyance with the recycle bin. After accidentally deleting the recycle bin icon and restoring it. It displays as empty even when it is full. If I hit F5 the bin shows its correct status.

Jan 6, 2010Two days ago i downloaded a program(Single file abt 100 kb) and executed it. After execution the program's icon simply disappeared from my desktop!
After that I have been getting resident shield pop-ups which tell me about a new file being created in TEMP directory.
eg: FILE NAME: C:windows empcvnp.tmpsvchost.exe
THREAT NAME: Trojan Horse Clicker.AEIO
Detect on open.
PROCESS NAME: C:windowssystem32svchost.exe .
Mil Shield And Webroot Washer Can't Working Win 7
Sep 24, 2009I'm thinking to buy Windows 7 and after that to install programs on it. Mil Shield and Webroot Washer are one of my top 10 programs and they work great on Vista and XP. Did somebody make some tests on them in Windows 7?I would like to use them in here too.

Jun 24, 2008The toolbar of Windows Explorer and file open/save dialog, was customizable (at least choose what to display) on Windows XP, but not on Windows Vista. Well, I don't want much but I hope there's a delete icon because I delete files often. That was possible on Windows XP, but it looks like I have no control over what is being displayed on Windows Vista. Can't I display "delete" or "property" icon instead of those stupid "play all" and "burn" icons?

Oct 4, 2008I'm in the process of building a PC, so I thought I'd try the ole Windows Vista 64-bit version for the machine. I've got for the machine, a Philips 22" 220CW8FB/05 LCD wide screen monitor, which has a nice display, really.As one does, I've calibrated said monitor and saved the settings, everything looked great. Experience tells me to be weary of what might happen, so I restarted the PC to see that my monitor's resolution and setting aren't displayed properly. The image is stretched vertically,the Start bar isn't even visible - until - I go Personalize > and adjust the resolution to something else, select No when asked if I'd like to keep it and hey presto, my monitor displays properly now. Problem is, I have to do that every single time I restart the machine. Currently, I've got just the drivers that come with my components CDs, I haven't been able to check on-line for other versions (but there isn't one for the monitor) for say the motherboard or graphics card, because in one of typically brilliant Windows moments™ (like when my mouse stopped working and it prompted me to "click here to fix the problem"), when I tried to install the -Vista compatible- modem, Vista said it wouldn't install it without a digital signature, and that I should go to the manufacturer's website for more information. I would. If I had a modem. So, in your humble opinion, which is the bigger waste of money currently? Vista or my monitor (twice as expensive as Vista)? Alternatively, any suggestions as to how I would be able to resolve the aforementioned conflict? I'd really like to keep both of them.PS. I guess it could also be a graphics card problem. It's French (not really, it's from Taiwan, an MSI NX8800GT).

May 15, 2010just after some idea of what's gone wrong.I was playing Warcraft, got up from desk then heard a weird noise ( by weird almost like a fizzy whooshy kinda thing, lol sorry )the pc went off and appeared to start up but with no display, the keyboard won't work and the keyboard backlight flickers like mad, plus the power button will not switch it off when pressed down...Power is there, lights and fans on processor n graphics are on, DVD drive lights on, 2 on the back are on (unsure what they for), all seems ok but can't see a display, tested keyboard n monitor on ps3 all ok with it being various bits could it be motherboard ? Not fussed bout pc though, just want to make sure it doesn't sound like hardrive, photos n stuff, sods law I didn't back up on Saturday as normal !!

Only when opened the mail reveals the date. When browsing 1000 messages that is not a good way to find the one from a specific date. Aug 23, 2007Windows Vista Search is giving me results, just not in the form in which I'd expect. When I search for a particular term, I get, for arguments sake, 1066 results, all of various file types. Around 695 of those results are JPG pictures. If I click on the button to Show Only Pictures, then the details pane shows that there are now only 695 results, but the results don't show. In order for me to see the pictures, I ned to click on All, and then scroll the results until I find the pictures I want. This only happens with when I try to filter a search to show only pictures.

Windows Explorer Left Display Pane
Jul 29, 2009I do not use the documents folder nor the desktop for data storage. My data is always on another hard drive and I an extra internal and several external hard drives. Everytime I open explorer, the folder list shows with Documents expanded. I have to minimize that, then scroll up and minimum my user name folder, then maximize the Computer folder. That is what I want to see when I open explorer.
It is possible to save that setting. I have seen a lot of posts on folder view, but I am not sure if anyone actually talks about the left half of this view setting. Why is My computer now part of the desktop and sub of user? Already in XP I hated that the C drive always opened explanded.
Refresh Printer Icon Folder, IE A Corrupted Icon
May 15, 2010PC: HP Windows Media Center PC m8200n; Monitor HP w1907. November 2007. OS: Windows Vista Home Premium. HP: Deskjet F4180. So I noticed that the printer icon for my printer became all white, IE a corrupted icon. So I went online and found information on how to refresh your icon folder. That didn't do anything. So I thought I'd uninstall and reinstall.
I have tried to reinstall my HP software from disc, and I get a 'new PSSWCORE.msi' file. I see the file on the install disc, yet it won't install. 'Network resource is unavailable.'
Now I cannot uninstall it. On my Add/Remove I see:
HP Customer Participation Program 9.0
HP All In One Software 9.0
HP Imaging device Functions 9.0
HP On-Screen Cap/Num/Scroll Lock Indicator
HP Photosmart Essential
HP Update
How can I get these off my PC, and reinstall cleanly so I can use my rinter/scanner again?
Start Menu Icon But Displays A Generic Icon
Apr 19, 2008I installed new software and pinned the executable to the start menu. But, Vista displays a generic icon in the start menu for this program. All other programs pinned to the start menu display the correct icon. Any way to get Vista to dispaly the proper icon for this program??

Jan 16, 2009I'd like to put a little disclaimer out here: I know very little about computers. I can navigate my way around them as needed for personal/school usage. Outside of that, my knowledge is spotty. Most of the technical stuff I need done on my computer is done by my father over breaks/weekends, because I can't leave my laptop with the Tech guys at my school since I take notes for every class on it.
So now for the computer... Oi. The computer I have is a Dell Inspiron 1420. I got it back in May. It's running Vista Home Premium 32BIT, and I'm using Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 (I don't know if that is relevant or not, but I'll include it just the same). Since I've gotten it, I've had more problems than I can count. The last problem I had before the current one (random BSODs), was a corrupt file on my computer (Dell Support Center). It wouldn't let me download or install anything, and I had to install SystemMechanic on my computer to get rid of the corrupt files/registries (I think. My father actually did this for me.) The SystemMechanic allowed me to uninstall/delete the corrupt file, and voila, it worked! For about two weeks.
Then I started getting blue screens of death. At first it was only one, and there were a few days/week and a half until I got another. And now, in the past two days, I've gotten at least two (I have left my computer sitting on my desk to do something and I have come back to find it "magically" rebooted and waiting for my login, or stuck on the black screen with the blinking underscore).
Configure Windows Mail To Display All Newsgroup Posts?
Feb 13, 2009I subscribed to several newsgroups and retrieved the posts locally. It seems Windows Mail onlly retrieves part of the newsgroup posts. I cannot seem to find where I may configure to make it display all the posts which I can see via Web page. For example, I cannot see posts earlier than August, 2008.
