I recently installed a game in Vista x64. It's an older game, but runs fine. Only problem is the desktop icon has the damn UAC shield and it pesters me to allow it to run every time. I trust this app, so I want it to just run. Is there a setting for the app to make it not bug me for UAC every time I run it?

So I've had to replace my computer and am just getting acquainted Vista...
I'm running Vista Home Premium x64.
I loaded a program (Corel Painter IX) and placed a shortcut on my desktop... Windows has seen fit to place a little "Windows Security shield" over the icon. When I look at the shortcut's properties, the icon appears without the shield.
Why has it done this, and how can I address it?

I'm thinking to buy Windows 7 and after that to install programs on it. Mil Shield and Webroot Washer are one of my top 10 programs and they work great on Vista and XP. Did somebody make some tests on them in Windows 7?I would like to use them in here too.

This morning my computer started issuing security alerts notifying me that the firewall was off as was the malware. I turn the firewall on but under the malware section it indicates that it is reporting to the security centre in a format that is no longer supported. It also has a little Not Compatible icon to the right of the malware icon on the left. Once the firewall is turned on and the malware turns from red to yellow when we turn it on the shield in the bottom right of the screen goes yellow for a while but eventually it goes red again and I am again notified that the firewall is off and the malware is off as well.
I know my subscription is still in effect and according to the system it expires 10/03/2010.

On starting up my Dell notebook today I got an alert from Windows Security Center that there were multiple issues with my computers security. When I opened the Security Center Alert it was indicating that my firewall was off and also that it could not detect any anti-virus software on the computer. The computer came with McAfee Security Center and when I open that it indicates that I'm totally protected. It of course has a firewall and anti-virus, etc.

One of the most common questions about system processes is what is svchost.exe and why are there so many processes running? First appearing in Windows XP, svchost.exe hosts multiple services within one process. This allows the operating system to save memory by reducing process overhead by cutting down on the number of processes that need to be running.
Every system service such as Windows Update, Event Log, Terminal Services, Audio Service, etc. runs within svchost.exe. Depending on the access the services need, they are grouped together and are run in a number of processes which explains why you see so many in Task Manager running under different accounts such as System, Local Service and Network Service.
Identifying what services are running is different depending on the version of Windows you have....

I have Vista Home Premium/2GB RAM/Core 2 duo I got this security alert today when I booted. When I open Windows Security Center it shows the problem that Windows Defender and Spyware Doctor are both turned off. That's as it should be and as it has always been. I have BitDefender Internet Security 2009 and it shows "No issue affects your
computer."
I used an elevated command to check that WMI and it shows as consistent. So
why did this alert suddenly start showing up?
I know I can turn the alerts off, but I'd much rather find out what caused
this problem and fix it.

You may have already heard about or read about this story. If so, this is not for you. For those people in positions where privacy can mean the life or death of a career or even a person, listen up. "Computer scientists have discovered a novel way to bypass the encryption used in programs like Microsoft's BitLocker and Apple's FileVault and then view the contents of supposedly secure files.
In a paper (PDF) published Thursday that could prompt a rethinking of how to protect sensitive data, the researchers describe how they can extract the contents of a computer's memory and discover the secret encryption key used to scramble files. (I tested these claims by giving them a MacBook with FileVault; here's a slideshow.)
"There seems to be no easy remedy for these vulnerabilities," the researchers say. "Simple software changes are likely to be ineffective; hardware changes are possible but will require time and expense; and today's Trusted Computing technologies appear to be of little help because they cannot protect keys that are already in memory. The risk seems highest for laptops, which are often taken out in public in states that are vulnerable to our attacks. These risks imply that disk encryption on laptops may do less good than widely believed.

How do I get Vista to stop annoying me about opening programs either at startup or when I open them manually? I've trying opening the security center and telling Vista not to alert me or display tray icon. But when I start up, I still get a publisher-not-verified warning about a program I want to run. And when I try to open it manually (or another app that contains an internal server), Vista (shield.exe) stops and asks me if I want to run it. If I take the checkmark out of "Always warn about this type of program," it's there's the next time anyway. I'd like to disable all this stuff. How do I go about it?

Vista Basic Machine started running very slowly and when I looked in Task Manager svchost.exe was using a 100% CPU. Using system internals process explorer it???s the network service containing crytsvc, dnscach, KtmRm, NlaSvc, Tapisrv and Termservice. Looking inside the thread that is using the CPU is ntdll.dll
I???ve ran all virus and spyware checkers I can and all show no problems. I've booted in safe mode and cleared all the softwaredistribution folder. The slow running does not affect safe mode but as the service is not started no great surprise. Windows Update doesn't work in safe mode either, thanks Microsoft. I tried to update AVG virus checker but it wanted KB929547 applied so I downloaded it and tried to run but after several hours all I got was install failed with 0x800706bb

I checked the task manager and found out that svchost.exe is taking up most of the memory and cpu! any solutions so that i can fix this, i dont think i can end process svchost since it runs some important applications on windows.

I've been a reader of the forums for a little while and found the need to make my first post. Let me preface, that I've done some searching on this issue, tried lots of things, and found nothing to help resolving mine. I'm running Vista Ultimate X64 SP1. It seems that SVCHOST.exe is causing the problem and I've attached a screenshot of the associated services. The problem seems to be random in terms of when it acts up, but quite often. The only temporary resolution is a restart.

This file called SVCHOST.exe is consuming my RAM, hard drive, CPU and everything on my Vista machine to capacity use. I know the real one is a necessary program, but there are many copies of this file working simultaneously here and my performance is down to a crawl or a crash. I've looked everywhere for a solution and have tried a couple to no avail. I get no working answers from anyone. Many, many other Windows users are getting this in massive amounts, too, so it's not isolated to me. Everything slows to a crawl often several times a day. I often have to restart. I am told it might be one or more viruses that does this, and I've been told it might be an unfixed bug in Vista, but no square answers. My scans and virus updates from Norton and MS haven't fixed this problem. I am now seriously thinking of copying my whole disk to an outboard memory and reintalling Linux on my machine instead of Windows Vista, as no one seems to want to address this issue in the Vista world, even though it is obviously a very prevalent problem.

I would like to know what these .exe files are basically and how to make this prompt window prevent from appearing each time when i am logging in. Whether this affects the OS & any of the system files/drivers or whether this is a virus, trojan or any kind of that.

In my network, sometimes my user's laptops freeze during the logon script. Well the computers don't actually freeze, they just don't move beyond the logon script. When I go into task mamager, cpu is running at 100% (2 gb ram and very new processors) and the process taking up the most memory (48,748k)is svchost.exe I think it's associated with the windows search indexing but I'm not completely sure. On the Microsoft support site I saw that I could use the command tasklist /svc to see what is running in svchost. But I haven't figured out yet how to determine exactly what this svchost process is assoicated with so I can prevent it from running all the time.
