Media Player 11 under Vista Ultimate has stopped playing .wma files. The error is "Windows Media Player is not installed properly. Please repair". However all other files type do play without error.Is there any way to fix this without reinstalling Vista?
View 6 RepliesJust upgraded from a 7300se to a 8600gts, and now I can't play DVDs. I've changed from a vga to a dvi connection, so I don't know if HDCP has kicked in? Whenever I try to play a DVD I get an error message "There is a problem with copy protection between your graphics card and computer" or something like that. VLC plays DVDs, but nothing that uses the Vista decoder (or any other decoder pack I try to install).
View 4 Replies View RelatedI had a copy of Ultimate laying around the house and decided for some stupid reason to upgrade the OS yesterday. It's been a nightmare. After 10 hours I've reinstalled many, many programs and have been able to get the to launch all of them with the exception of Outlook. I've searched for a solution and have had no luck following a solution to the problem I'm encountering.
I'm getting the following error message:

I have successfully used Outlook 2007 for the past 6 months on my home PC. The problems I am encountering began immediately following the upgrade to Ultimate (32 bit--I thought I'd have less problems with drivers going 32 bit route than trying 64). I am hoping to salvage my contacts and calendar if at all possible (I have them backed up on an external drive but it's not current about 6 weeks old...I see an Outlook.pst in Windows.old but I cannot open it). I've had to reinstall Office Ultimate 2007 and I have run repair three times. All the Microsoft Windows Ultimate updates are installed. Not sure if this is related but the Office Ultimate Disc 2 will not install properly.
is it something at Internet causing this? i can play a video if i have several hours to wait for it. it plays less than a second, then goes back to download another less than a second., plays that & repeats endlessly. this hasn't always been the case.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThe problem is: my dvd-rw drive plays CD's AND DVD videos but will not play game DVD's. What i have tried so far.
1) Used a lense cleaner to clean the drive.
2) removed upper and lower filters (registry)
3) Tried the game in another system (it works and is vista compatiable -
and yes the other machine was running vista)
4) Brought a new drive - still same problem.
5) uninstalled and re-installed drivers
6) Updated mother board drivers
7) tried the origonal drive from this machine in another machine running
vista - guess what? it works fine.
8) Tried system retore to the ealiest point possible - no good!
9) Same as above but from a backup - no good.
10) removed the only burning software i have installed (nero7) and re-
installed - no good. Also I would like to point out that the drive was
working perfectly when I first installed nero 7.
I am sure that between the drive working and ok and not working ok I have not installed any new software, only Vista updates etc but it hard to point out when it actually failed. Could this be a registry problem? Driver issue?
i can no longer boot up my computer as the boot/bcd file is miising or corrupt i found a windows artical on how to fix it and it didnt work ive also tryedd googleing the problem and got many results but none that seem to fit the problem or are helpful what can i do to solve this

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am having problems getting my shared folders on my XP Home machine to show up on my Vista Ultimate 64 cpu. I see my XP Home machine in the Network Map, but the only thing that I am seeing from that cpu is my DLNA servers. From my XP computer I am able to see both the folders I am sharing and the folders the Vista cpu is sharing. I have only 1 account on both cpus that are named the same and have the same password. I am running a Netopia router/modem from Qwest running the QM01-7.7.4r10 firmware version. I have tried disabling my firewall on both ends.
I have everything turned on in Network and Sharing Center except password protection, but have tried it both on and off. My XP Home has all the most recent updates (SP3, etc...). I am also up to date on all my Vista stuff except the "Group Policy Preferance Client Side Extensions" optional update. My router is seing both computers as being in the LAN. Attatched is a screenshot of the network map.
I am looking for path of hosts file in vista x64. I found solution to get for 32bit apps to see the 64-bit tree, search now find hosts file and i see it and can edit it. But before these solution i was unable to find hosts file.

Problem playing .MOV Kodac Camera File on Ultimate & Premium. Anyone know how to make this work. Installed K-Lite on XP Pro and Ultimate using the same .EXE installer. After error I reinstalled K-Lite on Ultimate with new download.

Just finished my upgrade from Home Premium x64 SP1 to Ultimate x64 SP1. I've been lurking here on the forum for a while now and having seen quite a few folks having problems with their upgrades, I thought a post sharing the steps I took, which resulted in a Smooooth and problem free upgrade, might be of interest to some.
In no way am I advocating or recommending ANY of the steps that are shown here (i.e. turning off the firewall, etc.).
First phase:
-Purchase and download the upgrade to my hard drive (shoparhive.com was less costly than digital locker). Since I live 40 miles away from the nearest store, I preferred the digital download.
-Extract the .iso file using winrar to an empty folder on the desktop.
-Performed full system virus scan.
-Performed full system spyware scan.
-Performed full system backup to the removable HP media drive.
-Burn the downloaded iso file to dvd, and the extracted files to another dvd.
Second phase:....................
Vista started giving a blue screen a couple of days ago. Mentioned something about a bad device, but no new devices have been added. Went through the typical steps, tried to boot in safe mode and got the following errors:
AtBroker.exe The application failed to initialize properly. Click OK.
Explorer.exe The application failed to initialize properly. Blue Screen
Then booted to my install dvd, tried to fix errors. Came back with a failed check at the file system integrity check. Ran the check a second time and no errors are found. Can't boot in safe mode, and when i try to repair errors I get no errors found.
I see Windows Sound Schemes, and DreamScene Content Pack 3 now available. Also the Windows Vista Ultimate Language Packs are back after the SP1 upgrade.

Installed the upgrade using the key from the bottom of the PC when it asked for the current product key. No errors. Finishes the upgrade and restarts and still is running Home Premium. Why did ultimate not take? We need ultimate to login to a domain.

With the anytime upgrade to ultimate can I choose between the 32 and 64 bit vista ultimate? I do realize that I would have to do a clean install of the 64 bit OS. I would like to try the 64 bit version but would also like to be able revert back to the 32 bit if the 64 bit doesn't work out. If I can't then the 32 bit version it is as I need to join a domain.........

When I was using 32 bit Vista I had all my Hotmail folders, newsgroups, calendar, etc. when I selected the Mail icon. Is there a way to migrate Hotmail to Windows Mail, or a way to replace Windows Mail with what I had when I was using 32 bit Vista? I had IE 8 with 32 bit and I have IE 8 with 64 bit.

I'd rather not spend a couple hundred dollars to do this when I already own Vista Ultimate 32-bit. My computer came with Home Premium and I purchased a Vista Ultimate Upgrade CD (32 bit). Now what I want to know is if I buy the $30 non liscensed Vista Ultimate (64 bit) CD, can I use my Ultimate (32 bit) Activation key to activate it? This would save me around $150. I talked to the Microsoft guys via chat but we just kept going around and around and they never really answered whether or not the Ultimate 64 bit would accept my Ultimate 32 bit upgrade key.

I have a HP pavilion laptop which came with 64 bit vista ultimate pre-installed. I shrinked the OS partition (160 GB), created new partition (40 GB) for 64 bit windows 7 ultimate. After installation of Windows 7, I cannot see the vista ultimate boot option when I boot my PC. When I boot into Windows 7, I still can see the vista partition. But instead of C: it is now displayed as E: I used the HP Recovery Disc to repair windows vista but I can only see a blank blue screen with the mouse pointer. How can I recover the vista?

1) CD ROM is completely ignored and OS boots
from a HDD.
2) booting process begins but it stalls. There is one kind of bootable CD which still boots which is DOS CD. I replaced the optical drive with a new one, but the problem symptom is the same.
I have a HP Pavilion Entertainment PC(32-bit OS). About two weeks ago, I was online when my power went out and my laptop shut down(no battery). It powered back up afterward with no problem but a few hours later when I tried, it would not go online. It cannot find any networks in my area. The message I get is "This computer does not have a wireless network adapter installed and configured." It suggests I install wireless networking hardware and verify the correct drivers are loaded. When I click that(Troubleshoot Driver Problems), it tells me to update the driver through Windows Updates. However when I do that, I'm told that I'm already running the most up to date driver.
The problem is not with my router/ISP. My husband's laptops are online with no issues. I'm not the most technologically savvy person so this is beyond my expertise.
I had this problem just over a year ago, and I took my laptop back to the shop -- they told me to take Vista back to the factory defaults. But when I did, there was a failure in the installation process and they told me that they would have to replace the computer -- apparently it was the motherboard -- on warranty. I hope it is not so major this time. Here goes. The USB ports have become very intermittent, spontaneously reading the plugged in storage device as having been unplugged, then spontaneously reading it as having been plugged in, with the sound that alerts you to that operation (this is exactly what happened last time, except over a prolonged period). Now my USB external hard drive isn't being read. It shows in the device manager, and the sound that alerts to when it is being plugged in or disconnected pings as it should, but in computer > manage > storage it is 'unknown' and 'unreadable'. My memory sticks can be read, though. And the USB mouse works in all the ports.

Strange thing is apps like Google Earth seem to access the web fine, browsers don't and neither does my Kapersky updater. I am using Vista 64 bit Home Premium (SP1). View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently downloaded WinAmp. I have only that to possibly blame for my current predicament. I just uninstalled it.
When I download something (anything) I used to get the little download box to appear in the upper left hand corner of my screen showing the download that just took place. Then I could right click on that download to show Open or Open File Location (which would be in the downloads file). But what I liked about it was that I could go right to that file location easily.
Now, whenever I make a download, the box still appears in the upper left corner but for a split second you see a file going into the small downloads box and then quickly disappearing. In a flash. How do I get the file to show in that small downloads box again?
As I said, I suspect WinAmp but I can't prove it. In any case, this brings up another problem. WinAmp took over my Windows Media Player and made itself the Default Player. I discovered the download box problem when I tried to play a video download and it wanted to play on WinAmp-not WMP. I don't recall setting WinAmp up as my player-I may have and not realized it, however. Anyway I want WMP back as my default player. Prior to WinAmp, my download box was working fine as best I recall.
Is there some reinstall or configuration to get the download box working again?
I tried to reinstate Windows Media Player (11?) now but it won't associate itself with all the various file extensions. How do I get my WMP to fully work again?
And how do I reinstall WinAmp (which I like) but keep WinAmp from taking over certain features where I do not want it?
