File Icons Appear All White (blank) File Name Underneath
Apr 20, 2008When I open a folder of files anywhere in Vista Ultimate, the file icons appear all white (blank) with the file name underneath. If I switch the View to medium or extra large file icons they appear normal and when I switch the view back to large, they again appear normal. However, after a few minutes, when I open the same folder, they are again all white (blank).

Oct 3, 2009In XP and earlier, you could select how the titles for your desktop icons looked. The titles, by this I mean words directly below the icons, all have shading. This used to be only an option. Now it "seems" to be the only possible option. I would really like to change this, I never liked this look.

I know how to change a program or folder icon or a indivudally file icon in the items properties but how do I assign a new icon to be used as a default for example word documents, mp3 and such o all my mp3 files and such are showing the new icon? Nov 5, 2009When you change icons in Vista you can use the ones embedded in files like explorer.exe and imageres.dll. I just went to change my "Computer" icon and this window came up showing the icons available in explorer.exe (Screenshot Attached). Is this normal? Are there supposed to be XP icons in Vista explorer.exe?

Once Maxthon was installed and set as the default browser all of the shortcuts to web pages that i have (i.e. favorites folder) and a few on my desktop all use the maxthon icon. I am able to manually change them back to the "e" icon by right clicking and changing icon. What i want to do is set it so that every NEW shortcut i create, as well as the old ones automatically use the "e" icon instead of the Maxthon one.

Desktop Icons Randomly Change
Oct 24, 2007I have added a number of desktop folders and shortcuts to my Vista Ultimate computer. I have assigned bespoke icons to each desktop folder and shortcut-the ico files being stored in a dedicated folder on my C: drive. All the icons are 256 x 256 pixels in size. However - sometimes, for no apparent reason, certain icons randomly revert to the explorer icon. Right clicking on the desktop and selecting "Refresh" has no effect. After a reboot-the icons may-or may not-correct themselves. It is worth noting that it is only the icons I have allocated that randomly change and it is not always the same ones. Icons allocated by a programme-such as Word, Excel, CCleaner or Acronis, are rock steady.
If I right click on the faulty ones the heading of the web document tab still shows the correct icon but I have to go through the procedure of changing the icon all over again to get the specific icon back on the desktop. I have tried the various fixes suggested in another thread here-such as right click on the desktop>personalise>display and change the colours from 32 to 16 bit and back again. This had no effect other than to lose the dream scene setting. I have tried making the desktop icon files read only but it has made no difference. For other reasons I had cause to reformat the hard drive and do a clean install of Vista recently-I hoped that this would solve the icon problem- but it hasn't. I have searched the MS knowledge base in vain and am not able to ask Microsoft for advice because my Vista is OEM.
Change External Hard Drive Icons
Feb 12, 2010Hey guys, I recently recieved a new External hard drive. The other day, I changed the icon on it, no problem. I've done it millions of times. Then last night, I formatted the drive because I wanted to get rid of this annoying virtual drive that would also come up when I plugged it in. So, I formatted it and now it seems I can not change the icon. I do all the autorun.inf etc. Here's a screenshot

Also you can see my other drive icons are gone. Ive reset the icon db before and no other icons have this problem but im not sure if I need to reset it again to get the rest back.
But my external hd is top priorite.

Change Icons On Quick Launch Task Bar?
Jan 2, 2009I drag program icons to quick launch taskbar and they are the usual icon only smaller. the big blue W for word though turns into some nondescript thing. anyway to get the big blue W? also I dragged some folders like documents, etc and they all look the same (little tiny folders). anyway to visually differentiate them> I know one can mouse over and see what they are, but perhaps there is a way to use text?sure is nice to have a completely icon free desktop now.

Mar 26, 2008Ihad Vista Ultimate 64 bit preinstalled on an HP laptop and now need and want 32 bit for a variety of reasons and programs (no 64 bit driver for WiLife and no TurboTax support).I understand the HP recovery disk will not let me put 32 on instead, and I will probably just buy a 32 bit version.If i do,am I correct (1) that I have to reformat the drive, thus loosing everything?(2)If that is correct,if I make a backup of all the progarms(eg MS Office) can I then reistall on the 32 bit or will they be looking to(and only run on) the old 64 bit? I'm not worried about data (photos,docs,etc)since I have copies,but I don't know what happens to apps.(3)Will I need to get drivers for all the hardware again?I assume HP or the manufacture will have the necessary 32 bit drivers.(4)I've tried MS Virtual PC and that didn't solve my problems.

Nov 20, 2008I have a DVD that enables me to select any Vista 64 version that I choose based on product key. By mistake I entered the key for "Enterprise" when I wanted "Ultimate". The Enterprise version does not include Media Center and I just want to add Windows Media Center without uninstalling and reinstalling the OS. The install CD will not let me upgrade.
Are there any Registry tweeks I can do to turn on Media Center or change the install to Ultimate?
Change System File 'hosts', "Cannot Save File, Check Path.."
Apr 1, 2008I really need to change a system file called 'hosts'. I've changed it many times before, but today I'm not allowed. I access the file, make a very small change, then try to save it just by leaving the path as is. Then I get a message that says "Cannot save file, check path.." But I haven't changed the path.

I just want to check if its a general vista thing or my icons are botched somehow. (if you can post a screengrab even better) the first two are fine but PDF, RAR, NOTEPAD, etc have a tiny icon on a page icon.

Nov 23, 2008I am having problems getting my shared folders on my XP Home machine to show up on my Vista Ultimate 64 cpu. I see my XP Home machine in the Network Map, but the only thing that I am seeing from that cpu is my DLNA servers. From my XP computer I am able to see both the folders I am sharing and the folders the Vista cpu is sharing. I have only 1 account on both cpus that are named the same and have the same password. I am running a Netopia router/modem from Qwest running the QM01-7.7.4r10 firmware version. I have tried disabling my firewall on both ends.
I have everything turned on in Network and Sharing Center except password protection, but have tried it both on and off. My XP Home has all the most recent updates (SP3, etc...). I am also up to date on all my Vista stuff except the "Group Policy Preferance Client Side Extensions" optional update. My router is seing both computers as being in the LAN. Attatched is a screenshot of the network map.
Change Default Email In File Folders
Feb 14, 2010I have two versions of Eudora on my PC but only one (Eudora 8 beta) is recognized in file folders that contain *.jpg files (as of today).
Before today, I would highlight a JPG and click on Email at the top of the open folder. Eudora 7.1 would come up and all I had to do was put in an email address. I should say that I use Eudora 7.1 with two sets of data - one for me and one for my wife.
However, my wife's version would come up which is what I want. As of today, Eudora 8 beta comes up when I click on Email. I have no idea how the association changed.
I also don't know why my wife's version of Eudora 7.1 used to come up instead of mine.
There must be a way to reset the association. I tried resetting the association in Internet Explorer - but only Eudora 8 beta is available as a choice. That's another problem. Why isn't Eudora 7.1 a choice in file associations in Internet Explorer 8?
Mswmm Files: Change The File Extension To Like .WMV.
May 26, 2008I have seen the replies about MSWMM files and understand that I have to change the file extension to something like .WMV. But how do I do this? I have tried various things but none seem to work. The tinyurl references published in other answers don't help, and the Microsoft reference is utterly useless. Why do I get an .MSWMM ext. anyway? SHouldn't Vista automatically supply a useable file extension, or is it something to do with a pre-installed program in my Sony Vaio laptop??? Grateful for advice.
