on the edge of re-installing vista x64 here. in windows explorer can you create a empty text file and rename the extensions as i have done in the screengrab? I just want to check if its a general vista thing or my icons are botched somehow. (if you can post a screengrab even better) the first two are fine but PDF, RAR, NOTEPAD, etc have a tiny icon on a page icon.
View 6 Repliesall my desktop icons got suddenly changed to internet explorer icons,after (i opened some program in the internet,) then i did some personalisation then it changed to my adobe photoshop icon, all the desktop icons now shows the adobe,,icons.like all my programs which was earlier like (yahoo msngr, msn mesengr,windows vista programs,almost all other programs) and my internet wireless stopped working. i have a vista home premium 32. and my comp is asus f3t series. i was trying to do the icon cache, but couldnt find. tried restarting but couldnt solve.now trying to run my antivirus scan Mcafee. if anybody knows the solution to restore my earlier icons.

If I switch the View to medium or extra large file icons they appear normal and when I switch the view back to large, they again appear normal. However, after a few minutes, when I open the same folder, they are again all white (blank).

View 7 Replies View Relatedi'm trying to change the Start Menu icon on my Vista 32-bit. I have looked EVERYWHERE and the only way it appears to be possible is by downloading a program caled ResHack. I did, but all the tutorials are saying to open the explorer.exe file and either look for a 6801.bmp file, which I don't have (looks like it's only on Windows 7), or to look for a "String Table" folder which I don't have either.I added a screenshot of the folders I get when I open explorer.exe in ResHack. PLEASE tell me if I have some kind of fake Vista version (which is weird because it was already installed when I bought the computer from the store) or what is going on?

View 9 Replies View RelatedPC has problem displaying flash drive icons correctly in file open and file save dialog boxes. There are 4 flash drives (Compact Flash, SD, Memory Stick, and xD/SM). The 4 drives'icons display fine from Windows Explorer but all 4 drive icons are missing in File Open and File Save dialog boxes. The problem exists in every application's file open and file save that I checked so I'm thinking it's a problem with Vista and not with specific application.

I've shut down IE, rebooted the machine and gone to Windows Explorer to delete this thing, but cannot. When I went to see if it was a read-only file, it was. But when I go to make it a non read-only file, I get the following message, "This is no longer located in the c:usersfavorites - verify the items and try again." Also I get this message "The system cannot find the file specified" ...I found this file in four other locations, and deleted them all. But still, I cannot get rid of it in the Favorites...

View 9 Replies View Related6 months ago i bought a new lappy and its been going really good with vista on it, no crashes of anykind that i can remember, but last week its just started playing up, Whenever i do anything explorer crashes, sometimes it resets itself and other times i have to load task manager and Run explorer.exe to get my desktop back. anytime i load IE7 it resets itself or anytime i load a new page it does it. It does it when i load explorer (file viewer) and within 10 sec it crashes and closes that with no error box or anything, simply resets or crashes and dosent come back. Same with control panel etc. i've tried my nod 32 virus scanner is up to date and i've run a spyware scan but its still crashing constantly. When i first load windows a missing file error pops up that never used to aswell, but its a different file missing each time i boot up.

Every time I delete it, this stupid Calculating time remaining pops up....and the file cant get deleted because the explorer stops responding, and I have to restart explorer. The file is only 290K. View 5 Replies View RelatedA Vista SP1 Home Premium problem - 9 live icons covering 9 dead icons: Several days ago I had a desktop with 9 live, working icons at the bottom of the desktop. ie: recycle bin, computer, network, control panel, etc. The 9th icon was a folder called 'powershell'.
Several days ago I deleted the 'powershell' folder, and, underneath that folder, was surprised to find a dead copy of the 'powershell' folder. The deleted 'powershell' folder was in the recycle bin, and an undeleted dead copy on the desktop. This dead copy cannot be accessed with selection, left-click, or right-click operations - so the 'Properties' info cannot be displayed.........
Everytime I restart my PC, my desktop icons go where ever they want each time. What is causing this and is their a way to lock the icons in place?

However, just recently, I noticed that the icons for the computer and recycle bin were gone. Futhermore, the icon for some of the folders on my computer were either blank or a icon of the computer. Some files (ranging from the .dll to .exe) were changed to the computer icon as well. The icons for the floppy drive and my usb also disappeared and are displayed by the icon that represents file that windows does not recognise. How I can restore these icons? I have tried a system restore back a week when they were all still good but that did not make a difference.

View 8 Replies View RelatedSo I just traded out my year old Gateway laptop (which stopped working) for a new Dell Inspiron. I've never been particularly impressed with Dell but the Tech Guy at Best Buy assured me the quality of their laptops had improved. Anyway, it came with Windows Vista Home Premium. Since it was a Dell it came loaded with a stardock with mac-like icons instead of desktop icons. I like it so I customized it with the icons for the programs I use most, stared typing up notes for medical school with MS Word, and started downloading music files.
So the other day I notice strangely that the dock had reverted back to the original icons that were present when I first got the computer. Then I noticed all of the files downloaded/saved to the harddrive had disappeared. So I start anew adding files and replacing most of the old ones. Then suddenly yesterday the dock changes again back to how it was...customized and the files that I originally had reappeared but now the files I saved when it changed the first time are gone. So what is going on? Is this some kind of glitch in the OS? Is there something wrong with the actual computer? how get my files back?
I need to change the display filename colors in Vista Windows Explorer similar to the MAC O/S Feature. This question does NOT deal with Encrypted Files or Compressed Files. I simply want to change the display names of the files to colors such as BLUE, GREY, etc., just like I can do on the MAC O/S for the past 5 years.
I do NOT want to use any third party software file managers. There must be a way to do it in Windows since APPLE has been doing it for 60 months now. I can't believe that Windows STILL Cannot perform this simple task! If you have a working solution using Windows Explorer please email me and let me know.
I wasn't quite sure if IE8 was the culprit, but it became apparent once I removed it. Internet Explorer 8 interferes with the functionality in Windows Explorer for Vista. Say for example: With IE8 installed, open up "Computer". Close it, then open it again. It should be instantaneous. But its not. A window will take over to 10 seconds to show its initial contents. Once its open though, its very fast because the instance is already running. But once it closes it will take another 10 seconds to open again. Internet Explorer 8 itself opens up very slowly even after the first opening. Can any Vista users verify this?
1. Install IE8
2. Go: Start > click Computer
3. Close that Window.
4. Repeat step 2.
Is it an instantaneous opening or does the window take more than 5 seconds to populate? Repeat those steps with opening Internet Explorer. Is it the same? If so, welcome to the club. Does Microsoft have any way to report this bug to developers?
when i turn on my computer, an error message comes saying "Windows failed to load because a file is missing or corrupt File: Netio.sys Status: 0xc0000221" This started when i was clearing my computer of useless programs, and after i deleted Realtime player or Quicktime player, (can't remember which) an error message jumped from the taskbar saying something about Network device driver. After that every time i start the computer, the "Windows failed to load" message pops up. The first half a year, it was solved by pressing enter, to "Choose an operating system to start: Windows Vista" and then to "Windows error recovery (start windows normally, safe mode etc)" and back to "Windows failed to start", repeating it 3-20 times. Then i had a familiar "Unexpected shutdown" during a game, and now, the "Enter spamming technique" doesn't work anymore. All i can access at the moment is Windows memory diagnostic tool, and Bios setup utility. Is there any way to fix this through the setup utility or some other manner?
