I inadvertantly changed the file extension on my Zip file properties to notepad, and so I can't use .zip... How do I find the .zip extension in vista...
I have seen the replies about MSWMM files and understand that I have to change the file extension to something like .WMV. But how do I do this? I have tried various things but none seem to work. The tinyurl references published in other answers don't help, and the Microsoft reference is utterly useless. Why do I get an .MSWMM ext. anyway? SHouldn't Vista automatically supply a useable file extension, or is it something to do with a pre-installed program in my Sony Vaio laptop??? Grateful for advice.
so this is probably hugely naïve, but I would like to make legitimate, playable versions of music and other videos that I have downloaded as Flash Video Files [.flv] to Real Player, and copy these to a CD/DVD. I do have NTI CD&DVD-Maker 7x. Platinum Edition, and have tried to do this, but it does not recognise the .flv format. Is there a simple way of copying the video clip and changing the file extension of the copy so that it will be recognised by NTI CD&DVD-Maker? I stress, that I want a legitimate way to do this. If it can't be done, then so be it, and I'll forget all about trying to do it.
In XP and earlier, you could select how the titles for your desktop icons looked. The titles, by this I mean words directly below the icons, all have shading. This used to be only an option. Now it "seems" to be the only possible option. I would really like to change this, I never liked this look.
I have downloaded a icon package for vista with very smooth icons. I know how to change a program or folder icon or a indivudally file icon in the items properties but how do I assign a new icon to be used as a default for example word documents, mp3 and such o all my mp3 files and such are showing the new icon? If it have something so say I'm using vista 64 bit ultimative sp1
When you change icons in Vista you can use the ones embedded in files like explorer.exe and imageres.dll. I just went to change my "Computer" icon and this window came up showing the icons available in explorer.exe (Screenshot Attached). Is this normal? Are there supposed to be XP icons in Vista explorer.exe?
I got some screen shots of my vista premium 32 bit with vista os x 09 theme(msstyle---my theme files are patched) and rk launcher and all that good ****, but Ive been searching to see if there is a way to change the desktop icons(and any other icons for that matter) to really pull off my mac look a like attempt.
Does anyone know if it is possible to change the size of the icons when using tile view in explorer? I know I can make the icons bigger by switching to large or extra large icons view but I like the extra information I get from the tiles view, such as drive space.
I have vista with ie7 and Maxthon installed. Once Maxthon was installed and set as the default browser all of the shortcuts to web pages that i have (i.e. favorites folder) and a few on my desktop all use the maxthon icon. I am able to manually change them back to the "e" icon by right clicking and changing icon. What i want to do is set it so that every NEW shortcut i create, as well as the old ones automatically use the "e" icon instead of the Maxthon one.
I have added a number of desktop folders and shortcuts to my Vista Ultimate computer. I have assigned bespoke icons to each desktop folder and shortcut-the ico files being stored in a dedicated folder on my C: drive. All the icons are 256 x 256 pixels in size. However - sometimes, for no apparent reason, certain icons randomly revert to the explorer icon. Right clicking on the desktop and selecting "Refresh" has no effect. After a reboot-the icons may-or may not-correct themselves. It is worth noting that it is only the icons I have allocated that randomly change and it is not always the same ones. Icons allocated by a programme-such as Word, Excel, CCleaner or Acronis, are rock steady.
If I right click on the faulty ones the heading of the web document tab still shows the correct icon but I have to go through the procedure of changing the icon all over again to get the specific icon back on the desktop. I have tried the various fixes suggested in another thread here-such as right click on the desktop>personalise>display and change the colours from 32 to 16 bit and back again. This had no effect other than to lose the dream scene setting. I have tried making the desktop icon files read only but it has made no difference. For other reasons I had cause to reformat the hard drive and do a clean install of Vista recently-I hoped that this would solve the icon problem- but it hasn't. I have searched the MS knowledge base in vain and am not able to ask Microsoft for advice because my Vista is OEM.
Hey guys, I recently recieved a new External hard drive. The other day, I changed the icon on it, no problem. I've done it millions of times. Then last night, I formatted the drive because I wanted to get rid of this annoying virtual drive that would also come up when I plugged it in. So, I formatted it and now it seems I can not change the icon. I do all the autorun.inf etc. Here's a screenshot

Also you can see my other drive icons are gone. Ive reset the icon db before and no other icons have this problem but im not sure if I need to reset it again to get the rest back.
I drag program icons to quick launch taskbar and they are the usual icon only smaller. the big blue W for word though turns into some nondescript thing. anyway to get the big blue W? also I dragged some folders like documents, etc and they all look the same (little tiny folders). anyway to visually differentiate them> I know one can mouse over and see what they are, but perhaps there is a way to use text?sure is nice to have a completely icon free desktop now.
Is there a possibility to change space between icons in windows explorer. I wanted to make it shorter, like in Windows XP. I added an imge to show what space I think about.
I've encountered an issue with my networking where my 1Gbps LAN has it's speed capped at 54Mbps. I'm using a laptop with a 1Gbps NIC and 54Mbps WIFI adapter. The WIFI is connected to an wireless access point (network 1). The 1Gbps NIC is connected to another network. Both networks are private. The networks are not connected. While transferring between my laptop and a Windows XP box that is only on the 1Gbps network I've noticed the speed stays at a constant 54Mbps during the entire transfer. I'm wondering why the speed of an 1Gbps network is being capped at 54Mbps.
In the windows XP you used to be able to go to windows explorer and file type and advanced to make a file type always open in a new window. I'm currently using Vista and Office 2007 and everytime I click on an Excel file in Microsoft Internet Explorer it opens in Explorer. How can I change this so it opens in Excel. This was fairly easy to do in XP, I just can't seem to figure out how to do it in Vista.
I did try Live Mail but prefer not to have emails divided into seperate email accounts - it makes quick checking more difficult. Is there any way in which this division can be avoided?
when I Start > Run > Browse for a file to run, the Browse dialog box displays by default the programs (.exe, .pif, .com, .bat, .cmd). How can I add there the .msu extension?
I want to search for a file based on extension e.g. .pst When using vista's built in search and putting *.pst in the name section I did not get any results when I know there is a .pst file on my system.
I trying to download this program. When I do it saves it as a EFW file extension. This just started when downloading stuff with this ext. on the end of files. Now I cant open and run nothing. How can I fix this ext. file problem?
I have a laptop HP DV9285ea where i replaced the Vista by Windows7 64 bit. Replacing the 2 Rams each 1 GB by 2GB (total 4GB) resulted in an error. The laptop is a 64bit processor and with W7 64bit there should not be any problem to extent the memory. Placing in one slot 2GB and the other 1GB was working properly. (3GB total)
The current Bios has version F16 while their is new version available F2D. Can the FW having any impact? The product specification gives the following:
Extension / connection Total extra slots (free) ???2 ( 0 ) x memory - SO DIMM 200-pins ???1 ( 1 ) x ExpressCard/54, 2 ( 0 ) x memory ???1 ( 1 ) x ExpressCard/54
Did i a mistake by just replacing the existing Ram, should their be an extra slot?
I just downloaded an .exe file fromt the internet and saved it to my harddrive. But I must've done something wrong in the process because when I check the location I saved it to, it shows a shortcut (.lnk) that won't do a thing if I double click on it. Is there a way to change the extension back to .exe so I can run it (it's an install program)? I've already scouted the forums and noticed you can do something with your regs, but I'm afraid that will affect other files on my computer and I'm only having problems with this particular file.
I'm having problems with Search in Vista. I want to locate all files that have a certain extension, such as .pst. In previous versions of Windows, this was simple, but not so in Vista. Previously, all I had to do in Search was to search for *.pst to see a list of all .pst files. In Vista, what do I have to do to find all .pst files on my hard drive?
I'm tryng to solve some issue on my Vista x64 based pc.
