Apr 12, 2008when I Start > Run > Browse for a file to run, the Browse dialog box displays by default the programs (.exe, .pif, .com, .bat, .cmd). How can I add there the .msu extension?

May 19, 2007This is probably small to most people and maybe many prefer it now, but when manually renaming a file the extension is not highlighted forcing me to have to perform a second manual operation to highlight the whole filename. It is the 'rename' function but I use it to copy and paste the entire file name. Like I said it is probably a minor thing to most, but I do this many, many times a day so if there was anyway to have this function behave like it did in all previous Windows versions I would like to know how to do that.

May 26, 2008I have seen the replies about MSWMM files and understand that I have to change the file extension to something like .WMV. But how do I do this? I have tried various things but none seem to work. The tinyurl references published in other answers don't help, and the Microsoft reference is utterly useless. Why do I get an .MSWMM ext. anyway? SHouldn't Vista automatically supply a useable file extension, or is it something to do with a pre-installed program in my Sony Vaio laptop??? Grateful for advice.

Sep 22, 2009For some reason Vista stopped using Google Sketchup to open files with the SKP extension. (It started using Adobe Reader). If I attempt to navigate to and open the correct program (Open With | Chose Default Program | Browse) Sketchup is not added to the list of candidate programs (no error indicated -- just doesn't happen). I can open a file from within the Sketchup program or drag a file onto the Sketchup desktop icon but can't open with the correct program by double clicking the SKP file. What am I missing?

Dec 28, 2009I have a laptop HP DV9285ea where i replaced the Vista by Windows7 64 bit. Replacing the 2 Rams each 1 GB by 2GB (total 4GB) resulted in an error. The laptop is a 64bit processor and with W7 64bit there should not be any problem to extent the memory. Placing in one slot 2GB and the other 1GB was working properly. (3GB total)
The current Bios has version F16 while their is new version available F2D. Can the FW having any impact? The product specification gives the following:

Feb 19, 2009I just downloaded an .exe file fromt the internet and saved it to my harddrive. But I must've done something wrong in the process because when I check the location I saved it to, it shows a shortcut (.lnk) that won't do a thing if I double click on it. Is there a way to change the extension back to .exe so I can run it (it's an install program)? I've already scouted the forums and noticed you can do something with your regs, but I'm afraid that will affect other files on my computer and I'm only having problems with this particular file.

Jun 8, 2008I upgraded (a so-called "clean install" on same partition... it made xp pro x64 unusable by renaming various system folders) to windows vista home basic hoping that PAE would work. I had assumed that 4GB RAM would be no problem (the intel e6600 core2duo in this system supports 64bit instructions, and as a result PAE works on linux just fine) though it is not doing what I expected.
After installing Vista SP1 (came out recently) from windows update, I decided to try using BCDEDIT.EXE and set PAE to "force enable" mode... Not working as expected!!! Well, pressing [windows logo key on keyboard] and [break] at the same

Sep 11, 2009so this is probably hugely naïve, but I would like to make legitimate, playable versions of music and other videos that I have downloaded as Flash Video Files [.flv] to Real Player, and copy these to a CD/DVD. I do have NTI CD&DVD-Maker 7x. Platinum Edition, and have tried to do this, but it does not recognise the .flv format. Is there a simple way of copying the video clip and changing the file extension of the copy so that it will be recognised by NTI CD&DVD-Maker? I stress, that I want a legitimate way to do this. If it can't be done, then so be it, and I'll forget all about trying to do it.

Jul 14, 2009While installing a program, the process was interrupted and the install created 62000 files using 160gig in my syswow64 folder virtually using all my hd space. However when you go into the syswow64 folder, there is only about 2000 files and 1 gig of space used. I have set the folders to show all hidden files. When I go into the ms dos prompt and do a directory, the files match the 1 gig data.
I can't delete these 62000 files and free up the 160 gig space because I don't believe they are actually there on the hard drive but explorer thinks they are there. Is there any way to rebuild, sync, or otherwise get windows explorer to recognize the correct amount of files that are actually in my syswow64 folder.(2000files 1gig and not 62000files 160gig)

Aug 27, 2008I am running Vista Ultimate 32 bit. I have a folder on my desktop named Downloads that I use for, shockingly, downloads. Anyway, there are a couple of files in the folder that are, apparently, not really there. They are like ghost files. They used to exist but now they are still visible but not recognized by any program. Also, they have a size of 0 kb!
I'd like to get rid of them but they refuse to be deleted. When I try to delete them, I get this:

May 8, 2009A multitude of files, folders and sub-folders have disappeared (all from my "Documents"). Miscellaneous sub-folders within folders have disappeared, while other sub-folders remain intact. At first I was completely lost, as the files were there not 30 minutes prior... After assuming the worst and thinking that they had corrupted or been deleted due to a virus, I:
- Made sure my folder options were set properly (I can view all hidden files)
- Thoroughly checked the recycle bin
- Did numerous searches
- Downloaded Google Desktop and searched some more
- Ran various "undelete" and "recovery" programs with no results
- Did a system restore...........
