The problem symptom is that:
1) CD ROM is completely ignored and OS boots
from a HDD.
2) booting process begins but it stalls. There is one kind of bootable CD which still boots which is DOS CD. I replaced the optical drive with a new one, but the problem symptom is the same.
i can no longer boot up my computer as the boot/bcd file is miising or corrupt i found a windows artical on how to fix it and it didnt work ive also tryedd googleing the problem and got many results but none that seem to fit the problem or are helpful what can i do to solve this

Press F2 to run
Press F11 to boot menu
Auto detecting PRI Master Atapai CDROM.
It then went to reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I went into the BIOS to change the boot order and inserted my Vista home premium 32bit. I then got windows is loading in files. After a short while I got the black start up screen with Microsoft Corporation but after a few seconds it just froze. Moments later it went to a blue screen with white writing part of which said the following; A PROBLEM HAS BEEN DETECTED AND WINDOWS HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN TO PREVENT DAMAGE TI YOUR COMPUTER.
I have a HP Pavilion Entertainment PC(32-bit OS). About two weeks ago, I was online when my power went out and my laptop shut down(no battery). It powered back up afterward with no problem but a few hours later when I tried, it would not go online. It cannot find any networks in my area. The message I get is "This computer does not have a wireless network adapter installed and configured." It suggests I install wireless networking hardware and verify the correct drivers are loaded. When I click that(Troubleshoot Driver Problems), it tells me to update the driver through Windows Updates. However when I do that, I'm told that I'm already running the most up to date driver.
The problem is not with my router/ISP. My husband's laptops are online with no issues. I'm not the most technologically savvy person so this is beyond my expertise.
I had this problem just over a year ago, and I took my laptop back to the shop -- they told me to take Vista back to the factory defaults. But when I did, there was a failure in the installation process and they told me that they would have to replace the computer -- apparently it was the motherboard -- on warranty. I hope it is not so major this time. Here goes. The USB ports have become very intermittent, spontaneously reading the plugged in storage device as having been unplugged, then spontaneously reading it as having been plugged in, with the sound that alerts you to that operation (this is exactly what happened last time, except over a prolonged period). Now my USB external hard drive isn't being read. It shows in the device manager, and the sound that alerts to when it is being plugged in or disconnected pings as it should, but in computer > manage > storage it is 'unknown' and 'unreadable'. My memory sticks can be read, though. And the USB mouse works in all the ports.

The defaults are right and there may have been an ms update that ended it all. When I click on the program a download box appears and if downloaded it will play ok but not stream.

View 4 Replies View RelatedJust upgraded from a 7300se to a 8600gts, and now I can't play DVDs. I've changed from a vga to a dvi connection, so I don't know if HDCP has kicked in? Whenever I try to play a DVD I get an error message "There is a problem with copy protection between your graphics card and computer" or something like that. VLC plays DVDs, but nothing that uses the Vista decoder (or any other decoder pack I try to install).

I have windows xp installed right now and I dual booted with vista by re-partitioning my hard drive. After encountering problems with vista I delted the vista partition and resized the xp partition back to it's original size. I am now stuck with the windows vista boot loader which persistantly telling me that the windows vista files are not present etc. etc. Is there any way that I can delted the vista bootloader and go back to using the xp bootloader?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently downloaded WinAmp. I have only that to possibly blame for my current predicament. I just uninstalled it.
When I download something (anything) I used to get the little download box to appear in the upper left hand corner of my screen showing the download that just took place. Then I could right click on that download to show Open or Open File Location (which would be in the downloads file). But what I liked about it was that I could go right to that file location easily.
Now, whenever I make a download, the box still appears in the upper left corner but for a split second you see a file going into the small downloads box and then quickly disappearing. In a flash. How do I get the file to show in that small downloads box again?
As I said, I suspect WinAmp but I can't prove it. In any case, this brings up another problem. WinAmp took over my Windows Media Player and made itself the Default Player. I discovered the download box problem when I tried to play a video download and it wanted to play on WinAmp-not WMP. I don't recall setting WinAmp up as my player-I may have and not realized it, however. Anyway I want WMP back as my default player. Prior to WinAmp, my download box was working fine as best I recall.
Is there some reinstall or configuration to get the download box working again?
I tried to reinstate Windows Media Player (11?) now but it won't associate itself with all the various file extensions. How do I get my WMP to fully work again?
And how do I reinstall WinAmp (which I like) but keep WinAmp from taking over certain features where I do not want it?
I went to update SP1 and after 2 days and about 5 hours I was only at 31% with a 1.5MB connection. So in doing a search I downloaded the full 750MB SP1 update and went to run the EXE file but it stated it would not install since I had all the language packs installed. Now that that install failed SP1 is no longer listed as an available update. I do not see that SP1 was updated to my PC.

I've done some research on the internet and can't seem to find a decent resource for this question, so hopefully someone here can help. My taskbar was translucent by default, and remained that way for a week or 2, but now, it is just solid black. I was told to make sure I don't have any maximized windows, becuase that will cause loss of translucency, but the taskbar is solid even when I have no windows open at all. All of my other Aero translucent objects are displaying accurately, but for some reason, just the taskbar is being difficult. I'm not sure if there is an option to turn the translucency on/off, or if there is something else I'm doing that is forcing it to be solid, but does anyone here have any ideas?

A technician came out and installed new cable and new internet today. He tried to set up the internet on my laptop but it will not connect to any net works not even my old network that i used problem free this morning. My other computer is connecting no problem to both the new network and the old network. I can see all the networks in the area but when i click connect the box just dissapears. when he took my laptop to set it up it was connected to the old network connection and immediately after he disconnected me from the old one i could then no longer connect to any network.

* In Internet explorer - the 'Interconnect connection setup' states "You are already connected to the Internet"
* Can ping sites (e. Google)
* Google updater can download from internet

* HP Total Care Advisor - states that Internet connection is good

I'm having some issues with file sharing in a network with 2 Windows XP pc's and 1 Vista 32bit. One of the XP pcs has a McAfee firewall and the other XP and Vista have standard Windows Firewall. Since I updated to SP1, I am no longer able to access files on the XP pc's or vice versa (accessing Vista files on XP pcs). Vista can detect both computers but when connecting to them. Same thing on the XP pcs.. "The Network path was not found" when trying to access \VISTAPUBLIC.
Tried to reset firewall settings on Vista (read that somewhere) but it didn't help. The weird thing also is that. when Vista is connected to the network, the XP pcs can no longer see each other anymore. When I check the workgroup nothing shows up except the machine itself. When Vista is disconnected, the other XP machine shows up again. Both XP pc's have the LLTD installed (although that doesnt really matter in this case). There aint that much information, I'm desperately trying to get files transferred to my Vista laptop. I could use bluetooth but when the filesize is over 5 gb. well you get the point.
I have a SanDisk 16gb cruzer that is easily recognized in my XP Pro machines and was for a brief while on my 2 Vista Ultimate machines. A few weeks ago, my 2 Vista Machines stop recognizing it. If I go to device manager, I can see it listed as a disk drive. To get it to work I scroll down to USB Mass Storage Device and disable/enable it and it pops up and all is good. If I look in Computer Mgmt /Disk Mgmt, it shows up as unallocated so it does not get assigned a driver letter. If I boot the PC with the usb drive inserted it works fine.
I called Sandisk technial support and they said it was "Vista problem" because the drive works in XP and in a friend's computer also running Vista. Can one delete all USB devices in Vista without doing a complete reload of Vista. Maybe setting all USB paramters back to that after a clean install would help?
Up until 2 weeks ago when I was browsing and hit F11, the display would go full screen. No menus, no toolbars, no taskbars, nothing. Now when I hit F11, all of my tabs, the address bar, & the menu bar remain. I'd like them gone again. I've read a bit about auto-hide, but that seems to only work on the taskbar.
When I'm in my Windows folders, I can no longer see thumbnails of pictures, just an icon. Not sure if an association was changed by another program? My Folder properties are set to "pictures and Videos"...

For some odd reason my cd drive stopped working after doing a system restore, -ive undone the system restores, tried a different one, tried going throug device manager, found the drive and uninstalled it, to be reinstalled by the system, still didnt work The most common solution ive found: ive also tried the regedit solution to delete lower and upper functions but i cant even find a lower or upper key, at one point there was a lower function, i deleted it but nothing happened and now it doesnt even show up, ive tried reinstalling the driver because that was when i first saw the lower, but still nothing
i know my cd rom is not broken or the wiring is not a problem, ive been having a few problems with my laptop lately, so i know its just technical problems, thats why i really want to do a system recovery, to not have to deal with this again for awhile, i finally decided to do do a system recovey to delete all files and start from scratch, but still nothing! There was no installtion cd for my windows vista, so i just did a recovery to reset everything back to the way it was, tried using my recovery discs that i made when i first had the cd, the drive still cant read it, even after i did the recovery

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an HP L7680 installed on my home network. I have drivers set up for it on my Vista Ultimate desktop and my XP notebook. All has been working well for a couple of months. A day or two ago the printer stopped printing from the Vista machine. I get no error messages. The print jobs just sit in the queue. I have hard coded an IP address for the printer, and it is still correct. I can connect to the printer's configuration page over the network using the IP address. I can still print to the printer from the notebook running XP--no problems. I can also print to a USB-connected printer on the Vista machine.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am running Vista x64, installed maybe 2 years ago.It seems to be running fine except I can no longer use the cut/copy/paste functionality.I ran sfc /verifyonly and Vista says nothing is wrong.To test,I open Notepad and type in a word.I highlight and right-click on the word and select "cut" but nothing happens (no errors, either).CTRL-X also does nothing.I can select "copy" but it's hard to say if that's working or not (probably not, if "cut" isn't working).With nothing in the clipboard, "paste" is grayed out and is not selectable.In Excel,I get the "cannot empty the clipboard" error, but forum posts seem to indicate that is an Excel weirdness and not particularly Windows-related.Here's a really weird thing:I can still use cut/copy/paste without issues in a MS Virtual PC instance.No problems there.It's running on the same machine.I rebooted and it worked again for a bit.Now it's not working again.

I wonder why my fax card's built-in speaker no longer emits any sound when I'm sending a fax - I used to be able to hear it dialling. I've tried Googling the issue and apart from a few people saying that they vaguely remember the issue and seeing a fix for it which they've long forgotten, I still haven't actually found a fix. The card is obviously still working as I can send and receive faxes and sounds are all on as per the options/settings,although I doubt that Windows Sounds settings have anything to bear on a card's built-in speaker. It's a Hiro 56K V.92 PCI Modem which shows in Vista as an Agere Soft Modem. I get the same problem in both XP and Vista by the way.The speaker worked for a while and then just stopped.

I have explorer 7. Again never used to have problems. I have tried using other explorer versions, e.g. firefox, opera etc. I did try to upgrade to explorer version 8, but for some reason this download would also not start. I have checked all settings, ran explorer with add ons and no add ons. I have no viruses etc. I run clean up and registry mechanic regularly. I restart and defrag. Even tried system restore! I just do not know what to do next........
My Vista home laptop used to print to my XP server but no longer does. This started about a week ago after I changed the router. I tried reinstalling the printer however it still doesn't print. I'm able to open the properties and make changes there however I get an error when I try and print. My other XP laptops print.
