IE7 No Longer Default Browser
May 7, 2008One of my PCs is saying that IE7 is no longer my default browser, and Windows Mail does the same. How can I find out what has hijacked these?

How Do Set Default Browser?
Jan 25, 2010I installed Chrome to give it a try and now when I set the default back to Firefox via: Start/Properties/StartMenu/Customize/Internet Link/Mozilla Firefox Chrome also pops up not Firefox. When I click on a web link from Windows Mail or Start/Favorites, the default web browser is still Chrome. How do I make my default browser Firefox again (Which is still installed as I never removed it)?

Jul 4, 2008I find IE7 unusable and have installed another browser as default. Unfortunately, the HP Health Check utility uses Windows Help and Support for some downloads, & that seems to only use IE7.
1. It is refusing to download an important security update because of my security settings for IE7
2. it won't tell me what security settings are responsible; and
3. it doesn't even indicate where its trying to download from so I can use my default browser to manually download and install the security update.
The only thing I can think of which might work is setting all security settings in IE7 to minimum. Any other ideas, eg how to get Windows Help & Support to use the default browser?
Make Firefox Your Default Browser In It Options But This Has No Effect
May 20, 2008I've been using Firefox as my default browser and until today all the Favorites and links opened in Firefox. But for some reason IE now fires up and loads the website when I click on a link or favorite. Favorites used to have Firefox icon next to them but these have now changed to IE icon. I have tried "Make Firefox your default browser" in it options but this has no effect. I don't want to use IE if it can be helped but don't know what to do to go back to how things were.

Apr 10, 2010I had to re-formal my hard drive due to some difficulties I have been having. When I restored my original OS I found that I had 2 Internet Explorer icons. I would like to be able to use the X32 bit version of IE as my default browser. How can I accomplish this? I have one game provider that runs only on X32 bit, and I would like to be able to download their games. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium Edition X64 bit SP2.

May 7, 2009Recently some default security policies has been changed on my Vista, apparently as the result of upgrades to my system.
1: I can no longer activate an URL received in an incoming email directly but must copy the URL to the address bar in my Internet Explorer. This makes sense and I can live with that.
2: I discover that I can no longer open some of my word documents "created in an earlier version of Microsoft Office". The message refers to registry policy settings and the help system refers to a Microsoft knowledge base article 922850 that leads me nowhere useful.
Open With - Files Associations - Changed Default Browser, The .html And .htm File Associations Had Been Set To "unknown"
Mar 23, 2008Having changed my default browser, the .html and .htm file associations had been set to "unknown". Don't ask me why. Trying to set them via the usual mechanisms: "open with" or "file associations" menus does not work because they are populated only with MS programs. All attempts to select other programs via "browse" option fail. I can select the program but it is simply ignored and no change to the file associations happens. Nor is the selected program added to the list of programs available for selection. As there is no option provided for typing in the full path, as used to be the case with earlier and better operating systems, and the "browse" option does not work, I am totally stuck.
Is this a new MS policy to prevent users from running non-MS programs?? Whatever it is, it is very frustrating and affects all programs and extensions, not just the .html of the above example. Another very annoying thing is that even when I manage to run some non-MS programs manually, they will only work if run in "admin mode", as they are prevented from writing to disk. Are users not supposed to be allowed to write to our own disks anymore????

Jan 27, 2010When I click links from a google search, my browser is redirected to other sites places like 'Ask' and 'Kelkoo' and other shopping and comparison sites.
I have spent HOURS running whole system scans using:
AVG (found nothing while scanning, but uncovered 3 'Trojans' while Defender
was running)Windows Defender (This scan triggered the above 3)Spybot - twice (found 69 problems on the first run, then after reboot, no problems, apparently)
But I'm still getting redirected.

Oct 18, 2008I'm new here with a problem that has popped up last night. Up until last night my web pages and everything was loading up in my Firefox browser pretty fast. Today things are loading up slow and with I go on to a news source to watch a video...the videos stop and go making the news video not worth watching. A couple of minutes I was looking at something on here where it said to use "cmd" command to get into something. It was set on "ultrarestrictive" and I changed it to "normal" but haven't seen much difference in how things are working. The other day I downloaded UTorrent on my computer but today I uninstalled it. Could UTorrent have messed something up?

Jul 19, 2009My daughter purchased a Dell PC that has Vista 64 bit loaded. We didn't realize it was the 64 bit version until recently. Her problem is with IE. She has broadband access, but as soon as she drills down more than two levels, her browser slows right down. For some reason, it worked well and fast for about a month, but she recently rebooted her PC and it's s-l-o-w again. Has any else experienced this problem? Is there any way or reason to go to the 32 bit version of Vista?

Unable To Access Websites Using My IE7 Web Browser
Apr 7, 2009This is getting very desperate for me. My problem is i am unable to access websites using my IE7 web browser. Things i have tried so far, run malware and deleted the results, run CCCleaner and deleted the results, run Anti Virus - there does not seem to be a virus on the machine although it displayed a comment on the system toolbar that there was a w32.zaposhopping virus on machine.
I am able to ping my router and go beyond that by pinging an DNS server 4.2.2.2 with successfully results so i know that there is nothing wrong witheither. I have reset IE7 explorer, i have deleted all tmp files, cookies etc.
I am able to access Google BUT it seems no other sites - I am at my wits end as to what to do next. I am very experienced with computer and work in the industury but not come across anything like this before.
