I have a few laptops part of our domain. They are connected to a few network printers and mapped to a few shares. When the laptops are connected to the domain network they boot just fine. But when they are unconnected to the network the time from power on to login screen triples. And the time from login to functioning desktop also triples. I am thinking that this is a timeout issue where windows is trying to connect to shared resources that are unavailable. Is there ways to reduce the timeout threshold for these services? If so where?
I am running a small network. My workstations are running Vista ultimate and my server running Windows 2003 server. Under XP I had no problems accessing mapped drives but under Vista they become inaccessible after a period of time/inactivity.
This is how it is set up. I have a folder shared on my server called applications. I have it mapped as "P:Applications" on my Vista PC. In "stored user names and passwords" I have an entry \Server with the login details barry@home and the password. This is exactly the same as I had in XP. When I launch Vista the drives auto connect and I can access any of the files. However after a while when I click on a mapped drive icon I get the following error dialog box entitled: "Location is not available" The error message then reads: "P: is not accessible. Logon failure: unknown user name or password." If I reboot Vista the mapped drives work again so it doesn't look like it's a Server 2003 problem and this didn't happen under XP.
This is an issue about VISTA going into "LIMBO" trying to reconnect to my mapped network drives, which I know I don't have access since I'm connected VPN... This issue isn`t isolated to VISTA. I`ve had this issue with all Windows OS, I just never found a solution.
The workstation is part of the network, we log into a DOMAIN (pretty standard...) Often, when using certain VPNs, the "tunneling security" causes you to loose "Network Connections"... which is fine. I.e. If I have a mapped drive to a share on the network or If my default printer is a Network Printer, I cannot access it. You will get the "Could not reconnect to the network share, etc.etc. or printer is unavailable") Often, same goes for email with Outlook........
HP Pavilion a6244, Intel Core2 Duo Processor 4500, 3G System Memory, 500 GB Hard Drive, Vista SP2 I am attempting to help a friend with her computer. Computer has started being very slow to start up between welcome screen and actual desktop appearing.I have deleted temp internet files, cookies, etc. and ran malware and virus scans and am now trying to run chkdsk. I checked for it to automatically fix file system errors and to scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. It appears to be stalled during stage 5 (verifying free space). It shows 112654681 to be checked and it is has been stuck at 9123650 for about 30 minutes now. What could this mean? Do I need to just leave it be, or how do I stop it at this point?
I have an Existing Vista install on HD1 and want to install Windows 7 on HD2.Was going to make HD2 the Primary Drive. Is there a way I can alternately boot to the HD1 Drive if I need to?
I have 2 HD's. One has XP Pro, the other Vista Home Premium. I want to dual boot. I got Acronis and installed it's OS Selector. It only seems to recognize the OS on the first drive. I tried making another partition on the XP drive (since that is the one I am not wanted to reformat at the moment). I have enough space showing, 63GB but I could only get it to make a small 7GB partition
i just got my 500gb Seagate drive back after it bricked from the little firmware issue they had. I also just purchased a 1TB WD drive. I don't really trust the Seagate any more and want to use the 1tb drive as a backup. I had backed up everything 6 months ago but it's amazing how much stuff you accumulate in 6 months time.
I am not too knowledgable in hardrives. Not enough to do anything complicated. Right now i am running Vista Ultimate 64 on the Seagate. Could i put another copy of Vista on the 1tb drive and just copy what i want over to it? That way if the Seagate dies again i can go right to the other drive. This will not be an external drive, just another bare drive in the bay. I realize i'm not going about it the best or most efficient way. Some people have explained better ways but most of it was over my head. I just want to be able to unplug the bad drive (if it goes bad) and continue with the other drive. So, would i run into any problems with Vista (not dual boot of course)on both my drives? Does it sound like this approach would work?

I had bought & installed 64 bit vista ultimate-however many devices and programs not compatible. So I bought the 32 bit version as well (i have an individual licensce for each version). SO in stalled the 32 bit version (wiped out the 64 as it interfered with the install). After a week of being on 32 bit, I find that I would also like to install the 64 bit version on a hard drive other thatn the 32 bit install.
I have scoured the Inet and MS sites but only see references to XP and Vista etc. Can anyone really help or point me to install instructions that will guide me on how to now install 64 bit vista so I can enjoy dual booting into either at BOOT? I have built a new system to game with and have 2 new hard drives, on one I put XP Pro and then on the other I loaded Vista. I have more or less completed all the driver upgrades and windows updates but I keep getting repeated boot failures of Vista. I can always get into Safe mode but in Normal mode the boot fails just after the first spash screen at the point when the screen goes blank to be replaced by the small circular
Vista logo. After 2 or 3 attempts it succeeds to load but then the problem seems to reoccur, particularly when I have been back to XP for a while. I had a similar problem with XP but that seems to have sorted itself out. I have tired looking in the logs for faults and failures but no clues there.
I am curious if Vista can be run from one of those portable external hard drives that I see in Staples, etc. rather than have to install another internal hard drive. I want to dual-boot with XP (already installed on an internal HD) and it would also be great if I can bring that external HD with us when we travel and hook it up to my wife's XP laptop and be able to boot up in Vista too. We need something for testing our software in Vista.
I have a Vista business machine that is used for Quickbooks. I have the data files in a folder (QBData) and it is shared with full permissions. I am mapping a drive from an XP machine so I can run quickbooks. The mapped drive and access to the files works fine until I close quickbooks and try to reconnect/open. It seems like Vista is not closing the connection correctly as I need to reboot Vista for the XP machine to be able to connect again.
There are many articles on how to dual boot Vista and XP, but I want to dual boot Vista and Vista, with an existing installation, on 2 Hard Drives. Currently I switch these in the BIOS, but I'd much rather chose at a later stage, can this be done? Why? Because I keep one of the drives for random software that I rarely use.

2)which folder cannot be shared? can you think of reason why an operating system might not allow certain types of folders to be shared ?

Ever wonder why you get network authentication errors when you are trying access a mapped network share from a process that was elevated by UAC? Josh over at WindowsConnected has a great article on how you can fix this annoying issue:
On Windows Vista when you map a drive under your admin account you will find that your mapped drive is not available after you switch to your full token via a RunAs or Consent dialog. This is by design because there are actually two tokens in play here. What happens is the LSA recognized that you are admin at logon and creates two logons. The first with a "filtered" token or non-admin which is used to render your desktop and the other containing your full token to be available after consent dialogs.
Because there are two separate logons there are separate logon ID's. When network shares are mapped they are linked to the current logon session for the current process token. Meaning you don't have access to the network drive from the alternate logon. This can come into play with logon scripts and a number of other areas where you may require access to a network share from both tokens....
I have a suggestion for Windows. It would be nice if there was a concept of "universal" keyboard commands. For example, CTRL+C could be mapped, by the user, to a universal command called "Copy." As it is now, most applications use CTRL+C as copy, but there is no real uniformity to this. Some users prefer to use CTRL+INSERT for copy, and this is less commonly supported.
Applications would have the choice of directly handling either the CTRL+C messages (as they do now) or handling the "universal" message that the "Copy" key was pressed. This would allow the most flexibility, so that existing apps would continue to work normally, but new apps would have the option of switching to the more generic approach. Only the most common commands need representation as "universal" commands. Things like cut, copy, paste, undo, redo, select-all, select- none, etc... And media commands like play, pause, stop, record would be nice, too. Interestingly, "record" could apply to recording audio or video, as well as something like recording a macro in a text editor or spreadsheet.......

This method of mapping drives has been running quite happily on 32-bit machines for several years until I purchased and setup this new 64-bit machine. I have a Dell computer, had it about three weeks. I have two hard drives in a serial ATA Raid 0 stripe 500GB each. They are controlled by Intel matrix storage manager software. I want to have the two hard drives separate, like drive C and Drive D In the Bios I have two choices ATA or Raid, I have tried both ways to have them separate, however still can't. I have to say that I found this forum by chance, by goodness I am glad I did with drivers for my scanner and printer.
I went to turn it on this morning, I just had a black screen showing the following words;
Press F2 to run Press F11 to boot menu Auto detecting PRI Master Atapai CDROM.
It then went to reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I went into the BIOS to change the boot order and inserted my Vista home premium 32bit. I then got windows is loading in files. After a short while I got the black start up screen with Microsoft Corporation but after a few seconds it just froze. Moments later it went to a blue screen with white writing part of which said the following; A PROBLEM HAS BEEN DETECTED AND WINDOWS HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN TO PREVENT DAMAGE TI YOUR COMPUTER.
i can no longer boot up my computer as the boot/bcd file is miising or corrupt i found a windows artical on how to fix it and it didnt work ive also tryedd googleing the problem and got many results but none that seem to fit the problem or are helpful what can i do to solve this

I have windows xp installed right now and I dual booted with vista by re-partitioning my hard drive. After encountering problems with vista I delted the vista partition and resized the xp partition back to it's original size. I am now stuck with the windows vista boot loader which persistantly telling me that the windows vista files are not present etc. etc. Is there any way that I can delted the vista bootloader and go back to using the xp bootloader?
Vista used to boot up very quickly. Now it spends ages on the page with the "loading" bar. Is it performing some sort of CHKDSK during this time? I only have sidebar and rocket dock starting up, and it's fast again when it gets to the desktop, it's just that loading bit takes quite an ages, and it didn't used to. Virus/spyware/malware free. How do i find out if it's doing some sort of chkdsk at boot?

This is the best install I have ever done (or was)…I did a fresh install and followed a tweak which was to very enlightening, to say the least. From there I have been to a few other sites and moved on to fully customizing my desktop/login and……well…this is where I stuffed up…My BOOT screen no longer works properly, even with the original “winload.exe.mui” file replaced.
I downloaded and used “Vista Boot Logo Generator” I loved the results on my last install…It worked well. Upon deciding to do a fresh install with Tweaking in mind, I simply coppied over a Boot logo I made previously after allowing permissions and all that as well as changing the NO GUI in msconfig…ect….BUT......
i am new to this forum but i have problem with my system bootup. my system takes too long to boot and it started 3days ago. it takes about 120secs at bootscreen alone. i believe it is not my start up programs as it takes about 3 secs to start up from login page. i donot use any third party bootscreen. normally, my system boots in 30 secs but now i am facing a lot of problem which i do not understand. i have tried all the tutorials in this forum relating to bootup problems but found no luck.
XP is on 1st primary partition [active] and is old. Vista is on 2nd Primary partition and is new. Dual boot info, I believe, is all on the XP partition. Soon I will want to go to Vista only. Do I just delete the XP partition (after imaging it, of course!) and set Vista partition to active? (Paragon Partition Manager). Will it then automatically boot into Vista (which has no boot.ini)?
I've had Vista x64 installed for about 2 full months now and I've recently begun having a lot of problems. One being: 187 seconds. What the hell? Before you ask, here are my specs. Lots of fast memory, a fast processor, 7200RPM boot drive (not listed), and ****ing awful performance. What gets me is that the delayed boot time is before I even see the "Welcome" screen.
My current boot time distribution: 1. BIOS does all its fancy stuff very quickly (about 6-7 seconds or so) 2. I get to my boot loader and it defaults to Vista after 5 seconds (dual-booting Vista/Ubuntu). 3. I then see the Vista loading screen (black screen with green loading bar) for about 4-5 seconds................
