View 7 RepliesI'm new to Vista (used to XP) and playing around a bit. I've logged on to a Server 2003 AD domain and the mapped drives that are usually connected via script aren't visible in 'Computer'. My first thought was perhaps some sort of incompatibility between Server 2003 group policy (or script) and Vista Business but when I was creating my recovery disks, I selected create ISO and when browsing for a location, the usual mapped network drives were available. So it appears that the recovery software can see my mapped drives (and therefore the OS must be able to see them) but I can't see them in the OS under 'Computer'. Is there something I need to turn on or off?

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy basic setup is hanging off a Netgear DG834GT, which then connects to a Netgear FS608 (10/100 switch).
On this switch I have my old laptop running XP Media Centre, my spanking new desktop running Vista Ultimat x64 (fully SP1'd) and a Buffalo NAS DH500GL.
All sit within a foot or so of each other and connect via cat5e.
When writing to the NAS from XP, I'm getting write speeds of about 3.7Mb/s.
When writing to the NAS from Vista, I'm getting about 40kbs (yes, 'k' not 'M')
I get a similar 40kbs if writing from Vista to a shared doc area on the XP laptop.
Copying from the NAS to Vista (and XP) I get 3.7Mbs
Internet speed if similar on both for download (about 8Mbs) although I haven't tried upload speeds.
I've tried the auto-tune tweaks as suggested by Shane, and turned off DFS replication as suggested by DMEX.
Also tried plugging both the Vista box and the NAS into the DG834 incase the switch was causing the problem.
None of those helped
NAS firmware is fully up to date, as is Netgear DG834, and obviously the FS608 has no firmware to upgrade anyway.
At the moment I'm stuck with copying a file onto USB on the Vista box, plugging the USB into the laptop and uploading to the NAS from there - which reminds me too much of sneakernet technology .
I'm running build 5384 on a Dell Precision 370 and a Precision 380. I've tried 64 and 32bit versions but I keep having the following problem: Basically I can access the internet but very, very slowly. Most pages just time out. The machines both have Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit NIC's connected to Dell Powerconnect Gigabit switches. I've tried Manual IP config and DHCP but I can't get a reasonable speed through via ethernet! I have tried disabling auto-tuning and have also used 'highlyrestricted' but this seems to make no difference. Net access for everything else is fine.
Had an old PC running windows xp. Worked fine connected to my router using ethernet and powerline adaptors. Bought a PC from a mate running Vista Ultimate. Now I'm getting only about 5kb/s. Checked my router and reset it. OK. In fact, speed using wireless connection to router from another PC is absolutely fine so its not an internet/ISP problem. Checked my powerline adaptors and reset them. No difference. So, all I can think at the moment is:
1. Powerline adaptors have chosen this moment to play up. (although was working fine before).Getting hold of long CAT5 cable so I can plug directly into router to test this.
2. Ethernet interface on new PC is screwed. If so, I guess I can get hold of a PCI LAN card or something.
3. Somethings up with the Vista install. Maybe virus, malware etc. I did a malware sweep and it found some but no difference after cleaning this. Maybe I'll wipe it and install my old version of XP.
running Vista Ultimate 64bit. I created a junction point which mapped to my User folder on external hard drive. Then removed this junction point and pointed it back to the default C:Users... location but ever since the file system is terrible slow even on basic operations such as rename file. So it's NOT a slow copy/move file issue, just that all basic file functions are terrible slow. It doesn't matter if it's in my Users folder or elsewhere. As you can imagine this is making my Vista installation completely useless as software such as Visual Studio is hanging on basic operations. Home wired & wireless network with Wireless N D-Link router, Netgear ReadyNAS duo wired to router, PS3 game console connected to router. I only use wireless from my laptop. When I try to move files around on the NAS using windows explorer, I can't seem to browse the NAS' content for more than a few minutes, then explorer locks up or enters a mode where it keeps refreshing the view of the network directory and doesn't allow basic file operations like right-clicking on a file to get its properties.
I can't get more than 1 Mbps of transfer speed with Robocopy out of the NAS. I have some video files on the NAS unit. Double clicking on any video to play it in Media Player is the worst thing to do - WMP doesn't manage to download enough data to buffer it and never allows to be shut down. I prevents Windows from shutting down cleanly. I made sure I had the latest drivers for the wireless adapter.
this is my 3rd fresh clean install, using both vista x86 and x64, and all new hardware as well (new mobo, hd's, cpu, ram, etc):
symptom:
after a day of two of creating a user account, the hd access starts to become excruciatingly slow, and gets slower with time. when you use explorer and want to access the hard drives, the system takes 3-7 seconds to open the folder. when browsing pictures, it takes 3-6 seconds to switch to the next, etc.
creating a new user account solves the problem temporarily, until a day or two passes, and then the same thing starts to happen!
what i've tried so far:
- disabled indexing (windows search service)
- disabled hard drive indexing
- tried booting up as ide, as well as ahci
- created new install with raid0, and same issue.
system:
* e8400
* asus p5q-e with latest bios
* 2 x 320 wd 3200aaks sata drives, 1 x 250 wd 2500aaks sata drive
* asus sata dvdrw drive
* 4 gb crucial ballistix pc2-6400 (ddr2-800)
i've noticed this problem accelerates even more when using the "sleep" power mode. but even when disabling this, it still happens.
i've googled for over 2 weeks. i've done 3 fresh installs, i've replaced all the hw, and used 3 different copies of vista ultimate, with same results!

I want to change the start menu and get rid of a bunch of garbage but I can't enter the folder to do so. When I use the start menu program, it only has a few basic folders. This happens frequently, even when trying to view pictures or video in the folder. What do I need to change to remove this very annoying problem?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have my laptop connecting to a server under AD control. My laptop is not joined to AD by design. I set up some files using 'Sync' to have them available to me offline. My AD password has since changed and I cannot connect to the server to have access to other files set up for offline access. When I attempt to remap the drive, I get an error stating I am already connected using the credentials provided. This is not true, since I cannot access the server. What do I need to do to fix this problem?

He was setting the parental controls and managed to control his account which had admin access. the user listing has the account listing as an admin but he only has standard user access. His was the "only" admin account.. While he was doing this he managed to deny access to the boot drive. The drive reads as "Access Denied". The machine boots up and a person can play games etc.. but network access is restricted.

It's all fine, but I want to (easily & quickly!) restrict & control when some laptops can access the internet while allowing free access to the server. Security Tab shows permission granted for Administrator and [User]. I am both User and Admin.
I ran Spybot S&D, got rid of any viruses it got and Mallware Bytes, again, removed everything. Even ran McAfee and got rid of whatever. But each time i run the scan on Spybot S&D it finds site that redirect me. I press fix selected items but it responds by saying "cannot access hosts file. Access is denied" I tried to untick the "protect hosts file form hijackers" in IE tweaks but keeps getting checked. On top of that the Hosts file is missing.

Printer is configured for sharing and is installed on both machines
test pages print successfully from both machines
Additional notes:
During printer setup on the Vista 32 machine, I attempted to install
additional 64x drivers, but could not locate them, so I skipped this step.
During printer setup on the Vista 64 machine, the shared printers were
identified successfully, and I added the network printer. I was not asked to
install drivers the way I have in the past when adding a local printer.
Printing using the shared printer on the local machine Vista 32 performs
with normal speeds. Printing from the network computer Vista 64 using the
shared printer installed on Vista 32 is extremely slow. Even typing in print
job changes in the print dialog window takes 30 seconds or so for each key
stroke to register a response onscreen.
I just bought a new laptop a Dell XPS 1330, with Vista. And it is slow in launching everything. Once I'm in a program, it's usually okay, but it takes 5-10 seconds just to open the start menu, or switch between programs, or open a program is more like 20-30 seconds. It's even slower if I'm coming out of sleep mode, it never gets faster, I always have to boot even though I see nothing in the task manager. Is this the way it is supposed to be, and if not, how can I tell if this is a Vista problem or the laptop? My cpu runs at about 3% capacity and my ram is around 50 when no applications are open.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy Vista x64 Ultimate was fast at first, but now after around 6months it has been slower. I have cleaned all Vista components and uninstalled unnecessary softwares/games. My HDD has 70% space remaining and its defragged. I have fast AVG antivirus and when I try to open a new folder, let's say my documents folder, it opens it fast but its all blank white and it keeps loading for like 3-5 seconds and then the contents show up. What's wrong? I expect an immediately folder content showing up especially when I have 3.55 GHz quad core and 8800 GTX T_T

Tools-> manage add-ons-> enable or disable add-ons
under enabled section look for "SSVHelperClass"(java plugin add-on) and highlight then click disable button.
Restart IE and you could see the difference.
Since my CPU is 1333, if I install DDR-2 800 rams, my ratio will be 5:4 or something like that.
1. Will my rams slow down to the FSB of the CPU?
2. If yes, what is the point in installing faster rams if they are slowing down to the FSB of the CPU?
3. If there is a benefit, what is it?
4. If rams are faster, do they somehow increase the performance of the graphics cards? (For, both ATI and NVIDIA make use of the system ram Hyper Memory and Turbo Cache)
5. Wouldn't it be effected by CPU's FSB? Lets say you have a DDR-4 graphics card, and your rams are DDR-2 800, rams are slower than the card, and CPU is slower than both of them.
I purchased my system (Laptop, dual core HP Paviolion dv6700) and installed vista home premium in December 2008. In the beginning system's performance was good but now (within 6 months) it starts so slow. What may be the problem.

Anyways, odd problem to have. After being logged into Winders for a little while, doing some surfing, etc., I'll go to close IE8, click the red x, and it'll just sit there for 5-6 seconds, and then finally close. If I log off and log back on, it'll behave properly, but sooner or later will start to act up again.
Anyone else run into this? I'm running IE7Pro, but I've been running that for a while now and this has only recently popped up.
I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ11S, with Vista Home 32. The laptop has a Core 2 Duo T7100 @1.8GHz and 2Gb RAM. I run Office 2007, Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks, Corel, etc... Sometimes the machine becomes so slow I almost fall asleep (literally!) while waiting for it do perform a simple task such as opening IE or showing a menu or opening an email message. I should add that my PST has 5.6 Gb. I'd like to reduce its size, although I don't think it is the cause of the slow running, but I need to keep many emails... I have talked with Sony and they simply refuse to let their customers downgrade to Xp. So, besides tweaking (which I don't know how to), what can I do to my laptop to avoid these episodes of EXTREMELY slow running?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am experiencing very slow boot up of Vista Home Premium 32 bit. It takes good 10 - 12 minutes to completely boot up. I am using Dell desk top inspiron with 4 Gb RAM. I did some research and learnt how to filter the event log and diagnose where the degradation occurs. In my case, a lot of degradation found in loading drivers like sound and video. Also AVG resident shield slows down.
When I first turn on the system, black screen with a mouse curser appears for two - three minutes. Then Welcome message appears and again it blanks out for another two to three minutes. Then the desk top appears and the icons are slowly appearing. By the time complete boot is in place - system idle mode, it is ten to twelve minutes.
