Just developed a problem with the screen brightness on my Laptop. When I unplug from the mains it dims, as normal but it will not brighten up again until I reboot with it plugged into the mains. Plugging the power back in doesn't work the brightness controls don't work, disabling auto dimming doesn't work.

Using FN and F10 does not increase brightness (swap FN with CTRL is disabled in my bios - FN is FN) The screen brightness indicator when I use the FN F10 key indicates the screen is at max brightness, yet at minimum there is no change in brightness. My ambient light sensor is disabled so I COULD use the FN key to adjust brightness I have reinstalled my chipset drivers, flashed my bios and tried damn near everything to get my brightness up. Currently, my brightness is at minimum, despite my power options saying its full and the onscreen indicator when FN is used telling me the same.
At bootup and in the BIOS I am able to adjust the brightness and it DOES get significantly brighter (and dimmer) when I use the FN keys. I have scoured the internet and have found nothing relating to my issue as of yet, hopefully someone here can help me out. Side note: I have a Compaq 8710w with Vista Ultimate x64 on it (yes, a legit copy) All windows updates are done, I have even done what I normally refrain from doing - installing all of the HP / Compaq base software garbage that they like to preload in hopes of remedying my issues with the screen brightness level....
i set up an account for my daughter, and setup parental controls and under the webfilter i set the setting to high which is what i want but i cannot get adobe flash player or any other of the IE7 add-ons to work under high setting, but will work under meduim setting. how can i get adobe flash player/add-ons to work under high setting? my daughter is 5yrs, and i just want all of nick jr website to work, right now she cannot watch the shows that they have on the site or play the games on the site. like i said everything does work fine on medium setting but i feel that setting is not right for a 5yr.

I also have a sticker next to my touch pad saying Windows Vista certified something. So i wa wondering if i install it, will i be able to adjust my LCD brightness through a program in vista?
I am currently using vista home premium but i cant find any where that i can adjust the display brightness. My frez's vista home basic have this function in the power option.

Everytime he wants to install something, either it asks for my password, either it says he has to be the administrator. Isn't there a way he can install the programs himself, without the need of my password and still have the time limit activiated on his account?

View 6 Replies View RelatedTo the right of the PLUS symbol (open gadgets) in the very top right corner of the sidebar there is a left arrow & a right arrow. I think they are supposed to cycle through backgrounds but on mine they are greyed out and do nothing. I have yet to see any mention of these controls in any help file or discussion. Are there different sidebar backgrounds and if so, how do I access them? Right now, my background is opaque.

I haveone account, as admin, no password and I already tried "run as admin" for the game but still the same. When I go to parental controls it tells me none are set as I'm an administrator, so no way to turn them on or off! I don't want another account, I just want one account, I'm the only user and I want to be able to do eveything with my account. How can I completely turn parental controls off?

I started up Vista with Safe Mode to see what I could do on his account. It still wouldn't let me sign in under his name b/c of the time limits....but there must be a way around that. Can I tell if he has used Safe Mode to get around parental controls?
Is there a way to put a password on Safe Mode? I set a password for BIOS, but I don't know what good that does. I know there is parental control software out there (Web Watcher is one I was looking at)....but what good is it if a teen can just get around it?
greetings. how can i access parential controls remotely to monitor my childrens activity on thier laptops? the laptops are running windows vista. basic and it is on a LAN connected to the internet. each child has their own laptop. so having me sneek in to thier rooms at night to go in to the admin account just to view thier activity is a pain. but if there was a way to do it remotely it would make things alot simpler.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm having problems with media center displaying any kind of video on my second monitor ( well 40" sony TV). using WMP however the display is always fine. Even in media center when the video is playing full screen and the play/ pause buttons are displayed the video is fine but as soon as they autohide a frame of the video keeps repeating constantly (I'd sway the same frame at least once every second). I've tried changing the screen resolution etc in media center and in the display adapter section but I can't seem to stop this. As I said WMP and other programs play back the files correctly so why doesn't media center?
I'm using an HP a6827c dual channel 64 bit machine and have been trying to disable the completely the admin control system using a solution from this forum by going to an elevated command prompt and typing a command string. the instructions say to type using "Bold" characters. (Does not work in regular font)(I tried that). How does one change to bold font in the command prompt window?
I'm a beginner at this and especially in Vista. DOS was such a long time ago so I need help badly. I understand that doing away with admin controls compromises security but plan to switch back after I clean up some of the files that I can't seem to delete now. I have been working with the Brink reply 6/1/07 and like someone else I read about on one of the posts, I feel that if we own our computer, are the only administrators and users, that we should have total control and not the computer or MS.
Every time I try and do something open browser, email, etc. A box pops up saying " Do you want to allow software such as Active X controls and plug ins to run" I know it is just a setting some where but I can't find it. So asking for some help in locating this setting so I can stop the box from popping up all the time. running Vista home premium X64.

When I play a WMA file, adjusting any of the video settings slider controls has no affect on the quality of the video playing, not even if I adjust the settings before clicking 'Play'. When I play mpg files, however, adjusting the settings DOES result in the video quality being changed corresponding to the whichever setting is changed. What I can I do to solve this problem when playing WMA files? Is there some setting I need to amend or do I need to download a file/codec?

I can access my HotMail messages by direct download into the Outlook application on my Vista PC, and also via web gui in XP. How can I figure out what setting I need to relax in Parental Controls, to allow me to access my mail? For me it is less urgent than for my son: he is also prevented from using the web gui, and doesn't have the luxury of an Outlook account.
I have Windows Vista Ultimate. Every time I turn on my computer, little pop up windows tell me to set a password as a way to activate Parental Controls. HOWEVER, I do not need Parental Controls - I am the only user of the computer and I have not activated the Guest Account or created any other user account. View 9 Replies View RelatedI seem to be having some trouble with my screen saver. I have the picture viewer as my preferred screen saver but it doesn't seem to work at all. The preview image shows that I should be seeing something, but when I click the "preview" button, the screen goes black and doesn't cycle through anything. It is as though the screen saver is activated, but not cycling. All other screen savers work except the picture viewer. I use a nvidia 9300 GE, which I just updated the drivers for about 2 days ago.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am having a problem with my mouse and the screen saver. I am using a laptop. I find that with the Kensignton USB mouse plugged in, my screen saver doesn't work. And yet if I unplug it from the usb port, the screen saver now works. As well, the mouse (when it is plugged in) wants to run the 'sidebar' down to the bottom on screens that have lots of data. I have to unplug the mouse and use my finger to move the mouse around.

It starts up, I get the loading bar, but then bluescreen. I tried to chose any of the safe modes, but none of them work, just gives me the bluescreen again. To sum all this, I can?t start my computer due to a bluescreen issue, not even with safemodes. It gives me alot of text, but the screen dissappears after a few seconds so I can?t even read two lines. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been playing around with my Vista for some days now. I patched my registry to account for custom visual styles and all. The computer responded fine to all these changes until today. I installed Desktop Maestro 3.0.0.830 which according to the internet is a decent registry cleaner and works with vista sp2.
What I learnt from the net is that desktop maestro will clean registry and will quicken my startup. So i ran it, and it came up with 937 problems in my registry. So the next thing i did was "Repair". and it did just that. But since then my computer hasn't been starting up at all. Before the login screen comes, i get a blue screen, which remains for too short a time for me to read, and reboots.
Turned the computer on in Safe Mode, which worked perfectly. Ran desktop maestro again, and restored the computer to a previous state. This didn't work. it kept saying C: has some errors please check. But the disk check doesnt work.......
hey everyone, so i know that there have been lots of post similar to this, but none of the actual responses work in my case. I used my laptop in the morning, no problem, and that afternoon, after I logged in, "welcome" popped up, and it remained on that screen for approx 30 seconds, and then it turned black. the cursor works but you cant see anything, but it sounds like everything is loading. I tried to press control, alt, delete but that doesnt work. It just sits there.
So I tried running it in safe mode, and if i hold down f8, it beeps for a bit, and then sometimes it runs in safe mode, sometimes not. I tried doing a system restore, but that didnt work. I dont know what else to do
i have both Vista and XP in my system with Vista in C drive and XP in D drive..i want to work in full screen mode of XP.. but in vista i cant do it...So each time i have to reboot my sytem and get into XP to do so..so if i can load already installed XP on my vista, it would be helpful...can anyone help me out..remember that i have installed XP and Vista already and i am not using any Virtual PC kind.
