I have been playing around with my Vista for some days now. I patched my registry to account for custom visual styles and all. The computer responded fine to all these changes until today. I installed Desktop Maestro 3.0.0.830 which according to the internet is a decent registry cleaner and works with vista sp2.
What I learnt from the net is that desktop maestro will clean registry and will quicken my startup. So i ran it, and it came up with 937 problems in my registry. So the next thing i did was "Repair". and it did just that. But since then my computer hasn't been starting up at all. Before the login screen comes, i get a blue screen, which remains for too short a time for me to read, and reboots.
Turned the computer on in Safe Mode, which worked perfectly. Ran desktop maestro again, and restored the computer to a previous state. This didn't work. it kept saying C: has some errors please check. But the disk check doesnt work.......
just changed motherboard to k8n sli platinum but now i cannot use my sata HDD , vista just wont boot when the disk is connected. it just keep on going forever in the boot up screen. but in linux , bart pe and other free dos program, it works just fine. i tried to formate it in all of these OS but still no way to boot in vista, i even cant boot from the vista disk with the HDD connected.
NOTE: i juse an IDE HDD to run my system, so the sata disk is just a storage HDD. if i leave the sata disk without any partition or format ,i can boot up in vista. but when i go to disk manager in vista and trie to formate it in vista, it just freez the program and i got to close the disk manager. but vista still work, next time i restart its back to the same , just staying forever on the boot up screen.
I'm new here, so I'll try not to screw up my post. I have Home Premium Vista, 64bit and 688GB hard drive(size when checking C: drive). I recently checked and it showed less than half full. Then a few days ago I tried saving a file and I got disk full message. I checked the c: drive again and it showed full- no space available, which should not be. I did a defrag, check disk and that did not work. I do remember seeing a warning around that time, but it vanished before I read it all. I think it said a file was not working or was corrupted and may have said something about "Catalyst". I found Catalyst Control Center on my computer, but that seems to be ATI card (graphics card?). I did delete a bunch of junk so it can now function, but latest check still shows only 72 MB available and that can't be.
Automatic backup worked fine until December 26 (daily). Since that date it has failed. T'he error code is as follows: Catastrophic Failure, 0x8000FFFF. Also, check disk will not work.
Disk check at boot : Is there a way to stop that darn thing from going off the screen after it is done ? Maybe there is nothing to report, but I'd like to see what is on that black/white screen at the end. You know, just one time?
hey everyone, so i know that there have been lots of post similar to this, but none of the actual responses work in my case. I used my laptop in the morning, no problem, and that afternoon, after I logged in, "welcome" popped up, and it remained on that screen for approx 30 seconds, and then it turned black. the cursor works but you cant see anything, but it sounds like everything is loading. I tried to press control, alt, delete but that doesnt work. It just sits there.
So I tried running it in safe mode, and if i hold down f8, it beeps for a bit, and then sometimes it runs in safe mode, sometimes not. I tried doing a system restore, but that didnt work. I dont know what else to do
I've got this major bluescreen issue. Two days ago, I just restarted my pc for no particular reason, and when it was about to start it gives me this bluescreen. It starts up, I get the loading bar, but then bluescreen. I tried to chose any of the safe modes, but none of them work, just gives me the bluescreen again. To sum all this, I can?t start my computer due to a bluescreen issue, not even with safemodes. It gives me alot of text, but the screen dissappears after a few seconds so I can?t even read two lines. I'm running a HP Pavilion m8055.sc with Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit
I am trying to fix a laptop.. it is getting blue screen.. things i did
1. Replace ram 2. Tried booting on safe mode/ last good configuration both didn't work
When I put a windows cd for repair (windows XP Home) and boot from cd.. its goes on the window where I need to select 1.c:windows but when i select that.. it goes on blue screen again.. I removed the hard disk.. connect it externally and ran a chkdsk /r and chkdsk /f then put it back to the laptop still didnt work..
Business with SP1 Sony laptop, fast core2duo, 4GB Defender+Avast! Working beautifully for many months, and then a few weeks ago this began happening:
Perhaps 2-3 times a week, and with no consistency of circumstances, a blue screen will appear. It might happen while working or when returning from hibernate. There's a countdown as memory is stored, and then a freeze. The only way to recover is to do a hard OFF (5 seconds on the power switch) and restart. When it first happened, I had not installed or changed anything, so I was comfortable doing a restore. It happened again.
It's confusing because the stated cause is inconsistent. I've checked to ensure that all drivers are updated and nothing that's contraVistarian is installed. What analytical steps can I undertake to discover what's causing this, and then to help me make the necessary changes?
Problem Blue Screen. No new hardware or software installed recently, last Windows vista update was on 01/15. When I start first, PC passes user registration (boots fine) and does the normal stuff like loading software and starting the wireless internet connection via Netgear, opening some windows/programms I will close. All normal, but than comes a Blue Screen and very fast shut down of system with restart. Hardly can read the message...Look like Blue Screen appears when to much action is going on like opening of IE and Outlook... or open to many windows... or some bad programm/hardware is booting. But when I restart, restart gives a different blue screens and trouble is much earlier or directly after registering to the system.
But all starting or booting turn slower, real slow now. Start in --safe mode with net working-- the PC works, but the PC can't handle heavy workloads, is really slow in action. I cannot open --My pictures-- to see all picture files displyed on screen (2.7 GB) (the process trying to access the files in safe mode is real slow) and when I attempt to transfer the file to a USB stick, the computer is stopping in middle of action (after 50% transfer)..........
My sister bring me a lap top Acer Extensa 4420, the problem is that every time you boot, Vista checks the C: drive looking for problems and the reset, after the reset Vista checks again the disk and reset again, doing this in a infinite way...
Before the chkdisk program start you have the option to skip it, if you do so you get a screen saying "Vista is Configuring the update 3/3" and then restart again...
The lap top have a rescue partition, with an auto-fix option, but it didin't worked, it was on running it all the night
My hard drive appears to have some bad sectors and I would like to run chkdsk with /f to fix the problem but don't know how to do this as I need to run this program in elevated mode. If I try to run the program in Command prompt or Run?chkdsk /f I am told I do not have the previlidges to run it.
I 'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but,I'm beside myself. I'm not very experienced on computers, but I can't get the disc check to run. I've tried to go to computer, properties, then tools the the check box, then to schedule a check upon restart, but the UAC box for permission never comes up,nor does it start when I restart the computer, what in the world it going on here it driving me nuts!! I am not good enough to go into the command prompt to do it,I don't know really how and not brave enough to try it. I just don't know about it. Could someone please let me know what is wrong? I have an Inspiron 531with Home Basic. Just the Basic computer.
I've been doing a clean install of Vista x64 for about a week and have been getting many random blue screens of deaths yesterday I did another clean install and only had about 4 drivers or so installed and I got a BSOD but no dump file was created for some reason so I kept installing more drivers and it work for about 4 hours till it crahsed again this time it gave me a dump file so here are the results.......
Last week I bought a new Acer Aspire 6350 w/ Vista - My 1st Vista machine. After uninstalling all the Acer bloatware, I open the GUI defragger, it analyzes C: for 2 secs (doesn't even mention analyzing the other 2 partitions) then it says "your file system performance can be improved". I defrag it the C:, it takes 45 mins or so and done. I go to my wife's Dell Vista laptop and go to the GUI defragger. It analyzes all 3 of her partitions. Weird, mine only analyzed C: for 2 secs. I then go back to my new Acer and run the GUI degragmenter again. After a 2 sec C: analysis it says "your file system......." again. Then when I go the command line defrag, run "defrag c: -a" it says I don't need to defrag. Bottom line is the GUI defragmenter doesn't work on this new laptop. It doesn't scan all partitions, when started it runs for a bit, then it just stops and it goes back to saying " your file system performance can be improved".
i have a Saitek Cyborg Gaming keyboard and everything worked fine until i spilled some water on it. the keyboard STILL WORKS after i let it dry out. the problem is it doesnt work on MY computer. im pretty sure its a driver issue. ive uninstalled all drivers for the keyboard and reinstalled. still no work. tried system restore to when it did work. still doesnt work. *Also the keyboard has gaming keys which are programed and still work. but normal keys dont. so im confused

I have installed the IntelliPoint 6.2 but it doesnt work. My Sony Vaio Vista recognizes the devices but I can??t move it or use it at all. When I go to its properties and click on Buttons the following message appears: "Some mouse settings might not work until you connect a Microsoft mouse to a USB port on your computer or set up a Microsoft mouse that uses Bluetooth technology."
Check disk will not run at startup. Runs in read only mode without a problem. Have tried sfc /scannow. Have replaced autochk file. Have tried from elevated prompt, drive c: properties, as well as in safe mode. Tried Vista x64.com tutorial methods.

About 6 months ago I ran a Check Disk of my C Drive (using the Vista Error Checking tool), and checked both boxes before starting (Auto fix file system errors and Scan for/attempt recovery of bad sectors).
It ran thru the 1st 5 of the 6 checks without finding an error.
On the 6th and final check it runs, it hung (or the 4th of the 5 checks it runs - can't remember if it's 5 or 6 it runs). . I believe it began the check, but stopped and didn't move any further. A few hours later it still hadn't moved, so I did a hard shutdown....
A couple of questions: 1) On xp I could always use Windows Key + F to find such files as Charmap.exe, or files supporting my sound card - that sort of thing. This doesn't apply in Vista. Is there an equivalent?
2) How common is it that a healthy computer with Vista installed will succumb to application malfunctions that can be rectified by Check Disk? My laptop was new 2 weeks ago and apparently the hardware is in good shape, but I've had to do a couple of check disks.
i am running a vista basic on my laptop, and it just recently did something called checkdisk, and it made it so i cant see any of my pictures, of change anything for personalization, like the backround. And the theme isnt vista, it is the old windows 2000 theme, and i cant change that. does anybody know what happened, or how i can fix this??
laptop runs vista but my desktop runs XP. I know this is a Visya community but can anyone tell me why all of a sudden everytime i am booting up on my XP desktop it says "a disk check has been scheduled, windows will now check disk" This process takes hours. how do I get my desktop to boot normally?
i have a gateway notebook with vista x64 bit and every time i try to start it up it used to run the disk check and say it would take more than an hour so i left it over night and no progress and it would let me start the computer up normally because it would still scan it no matter what and wouldnt let me start up in safe mode either and now when i start up it runs this disk check in a black screen and never finishes it gets to the 2nd disk out of 3 and then continues again dosent leave me any other choice of booting up (no safe mode or regular) after this check that is never completed it takes me to the log on screen but right before it says completing update 3 out of 3 and it says 0% but never goes any further and then shuts off
I have transfered my programs using the transfer companion beta. I had to change the language and locale to US English for that to work. But now lots of programs fail to open as Windows Installer throws a messge windows installer coudl not be accessed. I intsalled the windows iinstaller clean up utility and now i have this message when i try to open a program... Cant find script engine 'VBS Script' for script c:userspeterAppDatalocal empIXP000.tmpstartMsi.vbs
I unplug AC and USB devices in order to work outside my working station... After some time, when I replug the laptop to AC and replug the USB devices they don't work... No mouse, no printer, no smart card, no usb at all. Also I can't restart the computer as it freezes, so I have to shut it down "violently". I noticed that this always occurs when the battery is under 50 %. But sometimes it happens even at higher percentages. I've installed sp2, I've disabled the USB selective suspend both in power options and in registry.
