Parental Controls And Safe Mode

May 15, 2010

I have a 14 year old son who is not happy about parental controls--I know he now knows about using Safe Mode from a friend. I started up Vista with Safe Mode to see what I could do on his account. It still wouldn't let me sign in under his name b/c of the time limits....but there must be a way around that. Can I tell if he has used Safe Mode to get around parental controls?

Is there a way to put a password on Safe Mode? I set a password for BIOS, but I don't know what good that does. I know there is parental control software out there (Web Watcher is one I was looking at)....but what good is it if a teen can just get around it?

Parental Controls?

Jan 26, 2009

I use the parental control for my son. But I think he is enough old to install the programs himself, but I still have to limit his time and games on the computer. Everytime he wants to install something, either it asks for my password, either it says he has to be the administrator. Isn't there a way he can install the programs himself, without the need of my password and still have the time limit activiated on his account?

Parental Controls Doesn't Allow For This Game To Run

May 30, 2009

I have Vista Home Premium 64bit, I'm trying to install and run aBETA game I need to test, all goes fine until I try to run it, I get themessage "Parental controls doesn't allow for this game to run". I haveone account, as admin, no password and I already tried "run as admin" for the game but still the same. When I go to parental controls it tells me none are set as I'm an administrator, so no way to turn them on or off! I don't want another account, I just want one account, I'm the only user and I want to be able to do eveything with my account. How can I completely turn parental controls off?

Unable To Make Changes To Parental Controls

I am trying to make changes to parental controls. I get an error message that reads: "Unable to make changes to parental controls settings. Parental Controls Blocks Hotmail Access

Mar 1, 2009

Since activating Parental Controls using Vista 64-bit SP1, whenever I try to access my hotmail account using the web gui, I get the following error message: This webpage is not available. The webpage at Sign In might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address. More information on this error Below is the original error message Error 320 (net::ERR_INVALID_RESPONSE): Unknown error.

I can access my HotMail messages by direct download into the Outlook application on my Vista PC, and also via web gui in XP. How can I figure out what setting I need to relax in Parental Controls, to allow me to access my mail? For me it is less urgent than for my son: he is also prevented from using the web gui, and doesn't have the luxury of an Outlook account.

Annoying Pop-up Windows, Set Password, Activate Parental Controls

Mar 23, 2008

I have Windows Vista Ultimate. Every time I turn on my computer, little pop up windows tell me to set a password as a way to activate Parental Controls. HOWEVER, I do not need Parental Controls - I am the only user of the computer and I have not activated the Guest Account or created any other user account. And I do not want to give a password to myself? How can I stop these annoying pop up windows from popping up EVERY time I turn on my computer?

X64 New Install: Slow Internet Connection In Normal Mode; Fast In Safe Mode

Oct 12, 2009

Using my ISP (Roadrunner Carolinas) speed test site; I get around 200 to 400 kbps download speeds using IE in normal mode. If I boot to Safe Mode, I get around 3500 to 4500 kbps, which is what it should be (this is what I used to get in normal mode before I re-installed Vista). Running the same speed test with Firefox, I get around 1500 to 2000 kbps in normal mode, but if I try to download a file it ransfers at only the 200 to 400 kbsp rate (if I'm lucky). Here's more detail about the system and what I've done so far:

Installed all updates including SP2.
Using Windows Firewall, no anti-virus.
Updated network drivers directly from NVidia (Chipset is nForce750i)
Updated graphics card drivers directly from NVidia
Disabled all LAN protocols except for Client for Microsoft Networks and IPv4
Connected via ethernet cable directly to cable modem, no router.
I've deliberately refrained from loading anything but the basics until I can get this sorted out..........

Cant Get Out Of Safe Mode!

Mar 23, 2008

I've tried and tried, please I hope you can help me. I have a Toshiba A215-4817 laptop with Vista Home Premium 32bit. My troubles began when my cd/dvd was not operating properly. Toshiba support said my operating system was corrupt. I didn't believe that just because the cd/dvd wasn't working properly that the os is corrupt, maybe they were right.

I have extremely important info on my hd as I do taxes for a living.

In an effort to trouble shoot the cd/dvd I booted into safe mode. No-one tole me that the administrator account is disabled by default! So now I can't get out of safe mode. I have access to only my limited user account and uac is enabled. System restore doesn't change boot options.

I can't edit registry = access denied, cmd.exe when trying to activate administrator account = system error 5.

Can't Get Out Of Safe Mode?

Mar 23, 2008

I had an issue with one of my games and it directed me to go into safe mode to uninstall it. Now that it's uninstalled, I can't get out of safe mode. I've been through this forum in and out. I've done nearly all the things that it has stated that come close to my issue. I'm still in here. I've been in and out for 3 hours now. I've gone through the msconfig, and told it to restart in normal mode, I'm still in safe mode. I've used the F8 button while starting it, and told it to go to safe mode, I'm still here. I've even checked to see if it was the resolution, I've set it to my default settings of 1280x720, and restart it, it's still in safe mode. I've done EVERYTHING that I can think of.

If I run the recovery disk and tool options then mouse and keyboard work but I still cannot boot up in safe mode nor can I boot up normal.. I just need to get into safe mode and then I believe I can resolve this but since I can't get into safe mode I don't know what else to do?

Only Boots Into Safe Mode

Mar 29, 2009

I have a computer I can only boot into safe mode. I recently rebuilt a cannabolized HP computer and I cannot boot the machine into windows. I have tried three different, working, hard drives on it, but have had no luck. One of the drives is the original to the machine and runs Vista Ultimate 32bit. Vista booted suceessfully prior to the cannabolization. The second hard drive runs XP Home and also boots into Safe Mode only. The third hard has no OS so I tried installing a commercial version of Vista which was unsuccessful. Computer would crash. I ran a few hardware tests and the memory, cpu, optical drive, and hard drive check out. I don't think anything is wrong with the motherboard as the computer worked fine before. The computer is stable in BIOS setup, and when booting to optical disc. No POST errors.

The hardware I added should be compatible with the motherboard (M2n68-Narra2) as I checked with HP website. The hardware I added: Antec 500watt power supply, DDR2 8Gb Ram, Sony DVD drive, Samsung 640Gb HD, Thermaltake CPU cooler, AMD X2 5600+ processor. I am out of ideas on how to make the computer boot into Windows

Safe Mode And Tried To Uninstall

So I cold deleted from the program files folder. However, now that I'm in regular mode, my computer is still acting like before. How do I resolve this?..
