Power Supply Change Issue

Sep 6, 2009

I recently purchased a HP 6180, Intel Core 2 Quad 2.5ghz. 6 gig of ram, 1333 fsb. Here is my problem. I purchased a Corsair 750 watt power supply to run the new video card I just purchased. I believe in installing one thing at a time and test it to make sure all is well. (I have not installed the video card until I get the power supply Issue resolved first). The power supply was a pretty basic install. When I start the system everything runs ok until windows starts to load. The black screen with the little green night rider bar then the system shuts down. I went into cmos and looked for adjustments and tried a few and no luck. I ran the diagonistics for the processor and hard drive and ram. All checked out ok. The power supply is working ok, otherwise I would not be able to do anything. Every time windows vista 64 home prem goes to boot the system shuts down and then restarts. I tried the reload f11 tool and no luck. As soon as I reinstall the 300watt stock power supply back into the computer, everything works fine.
HP is sending me recovery disks or something, but I don't think that is the problem. Maybe if I reload windows with the new power supply installed it will work.

Will the power supply fit into my computer as well?(if possible please just answer yes or no to this question). Heres the power supply i was looking at. and if that does not fit, does this fit? If not, where i can i get a power supply that is about 450W-500W that will fit into my Dell 531s?

Woke Up The Power Supply Was Dead

Jul 20, 2009

I was taking a nap and when I woke up the power supply was dead. I replaced the power supply and have it all hooked up, but I now can't get my computer to boot up. The light on the MOBO is on, and everything seems to be good. One thing I noticed is the CPU fan no longer goes on where it had been previously plugged in. However, if I plug it in elsewhere, the fan works. So, now the question seems to be, is the CPU bad or is something wrong with the MOBO? Does anyone have any thoughts as to how I can test either or any other thoughts on troubleshooting?

Power Supply : Tiny LEDs On MB Light

Feb 19, 2009

when my PC is on, life is good. Everything works. No problems. Vista is set to shut down the power after 30 minutes and put the PC into sleep mode. At that point, the PC seems 'Off' until I hit a key/move the mouse; and it 'wakes up'. It seems like, sometimes, the PC will not wake up. when I hit the keyboard, moved the mouse - nothing. I hit the power button (held it in for 5+ seconds), hit the reset button...and still nothing. I tried unplugging it and plugging it back in. NOTHING. So, I opened my case and gave my PSU a fairly gentle tap and I noticed some tiny LEDs on the MB light up. At that point, I hit the power button - and the PC came to life. Vista said it was 'resuming windows' but everything was crawling about about 10% of the speed it should be. I had to reboot, after rebooting, everything was fine.

It does wake up sometimes though, sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't, the only way I can seem to get it to turn back on is to 'bang' a bit on the PSU; but the power has never gone 'out' while I was playing on the computer (which is a lot of time). If the PSU was bad and there is a short or something and when I bang on it, it reconnects....I can't explain why it never 'shorts out' or comes loose while I'm using the PC.

If it were a bug with Vista, I could see how or why it might work sometimes and not other times, and why the power never dies while I'm using the PC....but I can't understand how my 'tap' on the PSU could get it to turn back on. Basically - I have no idea WTF is going on. A new PSU would be ~$100 dollars and I'd hate to replace it if there is nothing wrong. my tap on the PSU is not affecting the connection between the PSU and Motherboard. The PSU is at the bottom of my case and my tap is really not very hard at all.

Automatic Power Plan Change?

Jun 27, 2008

Is there a way to get Vista to automatically change power setting plans depending whether a laptop is on mains or battery? I want to run mine on high performance when plugged in but on balanced when using the battery. I know I can manually change which plan to use, but surely there must be a way to get Vista to recognise which power supply it is using and change settings accordingly.

Power Management No Longer Allowing Me To Change Display Brightnes

Apr 17, 2008

I'm on a Toshiba Satellite that's worked fairly well except for a few self-repaired hiccups. However, about a week ago my power management plans suddenly stopped working. I can switch from different plans that change how quickly my display turns off, but my screen has been stuck at the lowest brightness possible for a while now. It has nothing to do with the plans themselves, I've restored all to their default settings and still no change in brightness when I switch between all of them. The little slider to adjust
brightness simply does not appear anymore. I can't find what exactly it is that's malfunctioning to reinstall, as no power management driver appeared on my disk from Toshiba. Can anyone provide an explanation or perhaps a link to repair this?

HUGE Ram And GPU Power?

Jun 25, 2008

Is there a way to tune down Vista's hunger for RAM and GPU power? I could play Counter Strike: Source better on my laptop which had a single core AMD Turion 1.8ghz cpu, 1gig ram and X1600 gpu than my brand-spanking new Asus laptop which has a 2.4ghz core 2 duo, 2gig of ram and ATI HD 3470. This is just plain ridiculous that a newer laptop and newer software give me WORSE performance for a relatively old game. And it just isn't CS:S that's a problem either. Startup and shutdown time is WAY too long

Power Plan Issues

Sep 11, 2009

Hi! I've just gotten a new Vista machine after having XP Pro for a few years. So far, I've had no difficulties and am qvery pleased with perfomance etc., with one exception.

In XP, the moment I pulled the plug on my laptop, it would switch power plans to my "battery" one (i.e. darken the screen, change how it shuts down and so forth.)

In Vista, when I pull the plug, other than the screen going darker, nothing happens. I'm told that I'm still in "High Perfomance" mode, which could affect battery life.

So how do I tell my computer that when I switch to battery, it's to change plans to Power Saver automatically?

Consider Life Without The Power Of Speech

May 19, 2009

Mankind uses speech extensively to communicate. Imagine how your life would be affected if you did not have the power of speech. You would carry your handy dandy keyboard and instant printer around with you daily. If a friend were about to step off the curb and get run over by traffic, you would frantically whip out your keyboard, type WATCH OUT! in big bold letters, and wave it in front of his face. Imagine your frustration at the local grocery store, as you and the checker exchange notes about the on-special price of an item, while the line builds up

Power On/Off, Dekstop Freezing

Apr 11, 2009

I have never been able to achieve a normal power off using the power switch, but had to use the options provided by Vista Home Premium. I am still having problems with dekstop freezing, and with frustration I pressed the power switch rapidly several times and to my surprise it shut itself down - legally. Nothing like the action you get by holding in the power switch for about 5 seconds.

Is my power switch now operating normally after being faulty for almost 2 years, or is it now faulty, providing a shutdown which should not be available?

Computer In A Low Power State

Jan 29, 2009

I put my computer put it into what I think is standby mode, the one that "puts your computer in a low power state so you can quickly resume working" (I remember the text, but not the specific name lol). The monitor turned off and I left the room before hearing the computer shut off. I returned to my computer some 12 hours later and it was still on with the HD access light solid red, and with the monitor off and the power button blinking, waiting for a signal. I said to myself, boy thats weird. I held the power button in and shut it down. I pushed to power button to reboot and nothing happened. It didn't turn on.

I pulled the power cord from the back of the power supply and drained any remaining juice from my rig, then plugged it back in, pushed the power button, and voila, on it came. It then booted up like it would if it were fully in standby / sleep / hibernate mode and the power went out starting up with 'resuming windows' and then going insanely slow as it tries to return all programs to the state they were in when the power failed.
