For some reason, when I minimize a window, it does go to the taskbar as it used to. When I would minimize several they would be stacked into groups on the taskbar. Now, when I minimize a window it shows as a small strip above that taskbar. How do I get it back like it was when I first installed Vista?
View 6 RepliesI have just noticed a minimized window on the taskbar with no name but only a folder icon. If I click it, a black screen appears in the top left corner of the screen with no border. Right clicking does nothing. I have just installed Diskeeper and suspect it may be the culprit.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI turn on my computer today, and all of a sudden the minimized tabs for the programs I'm using are on the wrong side of the taskbar. They're on the right side, near the clock, rather than the left side by the start menu. They are also so small that I cannot read them, and if I have more than two they don't show up. I know it's a minor problem, but it's really annoying to me, and I can't figure out how to make them go to the way they were before.

Whenever I minimize my game of halo, I can't bring it back up for some reason. It'll show in the upper left hand corner Halo, but it wont come up, I wait forever, and it never comes up, so I end up, closing it out, and ending the game. At first I tried to get used to it, but sometimes my screen will minimize because of updates, and other stuff, and its really annoying because I can't bring back up my game of halo. View 5 Replies View RelatedI have gotten used to keeping my Windows task bar at the top of the screen instead of the bottom. I find this more convenient because itis like the menus and is a shorter reach than when at the bottom. However, there are some applications that open at their old window coordinates, but goof it up by not "knowing" the task bar is using the top of the screen. It is as if the apps remember where they were in "visible" screen oordinates and then restore their location in full screen coordinates.
So the apps end up above the visible screen and have to be moved back by using the keyboard since the window controls are off screen. If the app is opened and closed a few times without bringing it back into the visible screen, the entire window can end up off screen. You would think that of all apps, MS apps would not have this bug. But Visio 2003 seems to have it.
I have to take medication twice a day, and I tend to forget to take it. Now, I'm always at my computer, when I'm not working, so in the past I always set up outlook to give me notifications twice a day that I needed to take my meds.
Since having to do a clean install of vista, I'm having some problems getting outlook (the whole of office actually) to install properly. The only thing which really works is word, which is basically all I need, apart from the notification thingy of outlook. Also, in the past I noticed that outlook was kind of eating up some resources, and caused some problems if I just left it running all the time. As I use gmail, I didn't have it set up with a mail account, and it kept asking me to set it up, at least twice a week. Anyways, I would prefer not to use outlook anymore.
So right now I'm temporarily using windows calender (or agenda, as it's called in the dutch version), but it can't be minimized to tray. Now, it has the advantage of giving me a notification even if I haven't turned it on. Unfortunately though, it only does so once. If I close the program after I've received a notification, it then no longer notifies me for the next time I need to take my meds.
So I was wondering if anyone knows a (preferably free) program which can give me 2 notifications per day, at preset times. The program needs to not take too many resources, and needs to minimize to tray.
Every time that I open Windows Mail from Internet Explorer, it opens minimized. I must then manually maximize it. I have googled this problem and find it as a general problem in VISTA without any solutions listed,or shall I say that all the solutions listed, like draging or increasing the window size and then to close it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm having a tough time trying to start Gigaget download manager via another program, and have it start minimized to tray. Seems to be no option in the program. If I just start it, then launch NirCmd to send the window a 'hide' message, it minimizes to tray, but then the Open tray menu command won't work. It will only show the button on the taskbar. The window won't actually open.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've noticed that if you follow these steps, the cursor isn't on the file anymore:
1) Open a folder with some files.
2) Click on a file. Pressing the arrow keys should move the file selection around (I call this the cursor).
3) Minimize the window.
4) Restore the window.
5) The cursor isn't on the file anymore. The current selected file has a gray background. Pressing arrow keys have no effect on the file selection. Does anyone know how to fix this?
The thumbnails that appear when you move the cursor over minimized applications or windows now don't show the contents of the window properly, apart (it seems!) from Windows Mail....all the others are blank with a small square icon in the middle. Anyone noticed that?

this looks like the closest i've found to a forum w/ my prob.
essentially i backed up my HD on an external (western digital) using "second backup" as the backup software.
i noticed after backing up that all my folder icons (favorites, contacts, music, pictures, etc...) reverted to the generic yellow folder.
i was able to change one or two (and only those in the shortcuts in "favorite links" heading of a windows explorer window) by right click -> properties -> change icon but all the folders (in their actual location eg. c:users"username") remain the ugly yellow folder.
changing them one by one seems inefficient and if annoying if it were to occur again.
i've done the right-click on destop -> personalize -> change desktop icon -> restore default, no result (tho i didnt really expect one since the desktop icons arent really the issue)
i've rebuilt the icon cache, no luck.
i've re-written the desktop.ini for a couple of them, no result (tho i didnt really expect one)
system restore isn't an option, i dont have an old enough restore point (hense the need for backing up).
i'm wondering of a systemic way to essentially restore the default icons for all these folders (music, video, downloads, etc...) and their respective shortcuts.
How do I or how can I change the look of my task bar with having to buy a program. I kinda like the look of apples task bar, icons across the bottom. Any ideas. Thanks

Once it is all up and ready they dissapear! I can't even right click on desktop nothing happens! The only thing left on desktop is the gaget bar.The only way to get online to internet is by going through the "get more gagets online" part of the gaget bar.

We're all using XP and added Desktop Search, using the search box in the Taskbar for quick searches. I can't seem to find a way to add it to the taskbar in Vista. I have unlocked the taskbar, and I can resize the quick launch toolbar. The taskbar cannot move or resize. However, the taskbar CAN move and resize in the Safe Mode. I wonder if I changed some registry entry or policy that I don't aware.

On the computer it says Vista PC Workgroup Processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2Duo My Internet connections have been glitchy lately. Our service is in a package deal (phone, cable, Internet) and usually is pretty good, but lately it was taking several tries to change websites. Someone said that it was due to the number of processes in my task bar. They said it should be around 24, but my has 100.

There was a sudden power outage that lasted about 1 second and my computer shut down and immediately powered itself up again. Ever since then the taskbar disappeared from my desktop. The resolution was changed too as a result of the outage but I fixed that easily. Pressing the Windows button on my keyboard does not do anything. When I minimize my windows, they disappear to the right of the screen to nowhere. I have tried to see if the taskbar moved over there but it did not.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI had this problem recently , when i open any window ( Windows Explorer, Firefox, IE ... etc ) my taskbar disappears without a reason. On the other hand when i minimize all the applications the taskbar appears again this is so annoying because i cant switch between my applications easily and i must press Alt+Tab to switch between them, besides i love the presence of the taskbar so i can see the time, in breif the absence of the sidebar makes me pissed off. this is my normal view of the disktop ( When everything is minimized ) : but when i maximize any window the taskbar disappears and the view SUCKS and looks like that: i tried everything possible, note that the Auto-hide the taskbar option is not enabled.

Attached is a screenshot of my desktop. The windows transparency is great, but I'd like to get rid of some of the "smokey-ness" of the taskbar.
Yesterday my computer was working perfectly, however when i started my computer up today the screen was completely black and all i had was a mouse, luckily i was able to start task manager and then run programs. I assumed this was a one time vista glitch but just in case, i ran an anti-virus that came out negative. I expected things to be resolved if i restarted my computer, but when i restarted it the same thing, so i restarted one more time, and to my discontent, this time there was not even a mouse, so now i have to write this from vista safe mode in order to access my computer. Attached is my dxdiag if you need to see it.
