I have gotten used to keeping my Windows task bar at the top of the screen instead of the bottom. I find this more convenient because itis like the menus and is a shorter reach than when at the bottom. However, there are some applications that open at their old window coordinates, but goof it up by not "knowing" the task bar is using the top of the screen. It is as if the apps remember where they were in "visible" screen oordinates and then restore their location in full screen coordinates.
So the apps end up above the visible screen and have to be moved back by using the keyboard since the window controls are off screen. If the app is opened and closed a few times without bringing it back into the visible screen, the entire window can end up off screen. You would think that of all apps, MS apps would not have this bug. But Visio 2003 seems to have it.
(i'm running vista 32bit SP1, i hope its not too out of place to ask a question in a 64bit forum)
this looks like the closest i've found to a forum w/ my prob.
essentially i backed up my HD on an external (western digital) using "second backup" as the backup software.
i noticed after backing up that all my folder icons (favorites, contacts, music, pictures, etc...) reverted to the generic yellow folder.
i was able to change one or two (and only those in the shortcuts in "favorite links" heading of a windows explorer window) by right click -> properties -> change icon but all the folders (in their actual location eg. c:users"username") remain the ugly yellow folder.
changing them one by one seems inefficient and if annoying if it were to occur again.
i've done the right-click on destop -> personalize -> change desktop icon -> restore default, no result (tho i didnt really expect one since the desktop icons arent really the issue)
i've rebuilt the icon cache, no luck.
i've re-written the desktop.ini for a couple of them, no result (tho i didnt really expect one)
system restore isn't an option, i dont have an old enough restore point (hense the need for backing up).
i'm wondering of a systemic way to essentially restore the default icons for all these folders (music, video, downloads, etc...) and their respective shortcuts.
I ran an .exe file in order to remove that little blue line at the bottom that is supposedly a "hidden" taskbar, and now I can't seem to undo it. When I load windows the taskbar is there, but without the clock and the system tray icon'd programs. Then I run the hidetaskbar.exe and it goes away completely which is great, but how do I access the system tray programs?
In particular, I'm having trouble with Trillian (a chat client that controls aim, icq, yahoo, msn all at once). When it starts up it goes immediately to the system tray, so it has been rendered completely inaccessible to me. I can't alt+tab to it, I can't switch to it in the processes window, I can't even access it's options to change it so that it doesn't minimize to the system tray on startup. = ugh. I can't remember the website I got the file from, and I don't even know if they have an undo version.
Any application like a game or a presentation wont use the entire monitor! It centers itself into a square and leaves a huge gap on each side. I cant take a screenshot so I will try to draw an example. Imagine the white is the application and the picture is my entire monitor. I dont know what else to do. I've updated the drivers and nothing seems to work! It's a HP Compaq 6710b, I haven't changed any display hardware. I've changed the RAM that's it.
Tired of the pathetic boot screen in Windows Vista? There is a cool trick that will allow you to see what may have been a new boot screen for Windows Vista.  Enable New Boot Screen:
1. Click on the start orb and type in "MSCONFIG" in the textbox.....
That devious trick did not work for me. Here is what I did;
1. Create a pps ( many slides included ). 2. Open new ppt > Insert > Object > click Create from file >Browse and locate my pps > OK 3. Resize my pps to cover the whole screen, set Animations as Automatically after 3 seconds. 4. Save it as pps. When I tried to view, it only show the 1st slide and exited. What step did I missed
The wendows defender stopped working. The antivirus I have is gone ( Kasparasky), The Admisistrative tools wendow is empty. I can't start the office any more. most of the start manue applications are gone includug the system restore. That happened just few hours ago, when the system showed me the blue screen telling me that the system is Halted by a memory problem. Can any one explain what happened. I have been using windows system for years and never had any problem like this. I have invisted a lot of money with this system to avaoid such problems
I have a DOS application that cannot be converted to windows and it works fine on all versions of windows presently. I can run it on Vista and it works fine except that Vista won't let it run in a full screen mode. Anyone have an idea as to how this could be done?
i have had this for a while, and i have no idea what it is, just a little white square in top left corner of screen. doesnt appear in full screen apps or windows, only on desktop (even if i change pic) when i have no programs running the only thing in task manager - applications is ASUS ACPI Cneter could it be that? what is that? doesnt affect comp in any way just annoying seeing it there
i was using my computer last night and shut it down for the night. Then this morning i booted my computer up as normal and a BLACK screen with no taskbar but an Explorer Window poped up.
For some reason, when I minimize a window, it does go to the taskbar as it used to. When I would minimize several they would be stacked into groups on the taskbar. Now, when I minimize a window it shows as a small strip above that taskbar. How do I get it back like it was when I first installed Vista?
I have a problem with my laptop. I clicked something and the Taskbar is on the side of screen. Can someone tell me what to do get the Taskbar on the bottom?
I have created a second partition on my primary C: drive.
I am currently using XP Professional SP-2.
Partition was created to install Vista Ultimate.
When I added partition to my primary drtive (C) it assigned drive letter designatioin of J: as letters D E F G H I were assigned to DVD burners and other hard drives both internal and USB Vista will be installed to J: as noted.
Will programs already installed - Office 2007, Nero, Adobe, ITunes etc. need to be installed to Vista partition or can I access them on my first (XP) partition?
I want your opinion. I need to reformat and reinstall vista. A friend who insists he is an expert told me to partition HD and put the vista operating system on one drive and install and have everything else on another drive. The reason he said is if I need to reinstall vista I do not have to reinstall everything else like I am doing now. I am skeptical. (Definitely do not want this guy touching my computer.) Questions:
1. Assume I figure out and do this install configuration correctly. Can I actually reinstall Vista later if needed without causing trouble with my apps on the other drive (partition?)?
2. I use Vista Windows Mail as my email client. Does using Windows Mail make this configuration irrelevant?
3. How easy or difficult to do this? When does "The law of diminishing returns" start to apply? Will there be sufficient benefit for the amount of work invested configuring this way?
I have seen a couple of threads talking about similar topics but none of them provided a solution. My vista 64 home premium worked fine until last week. All applications started without problems and I was happy. One day, I tried to click on some recently launched applications (such as Firefox which is my default internet browser) but this time, it didn't launch When double-clicking, nothing was happening...
I tried with many other applications, even the Windows Vista ones such as media player and... the same... VLC media player, Firefox, Avira (my antivirus), IE 32 bits,... nothing launches! The only apps apparently not impacted are IE7 64bit, Notepad and Comodo (firewall). Both Windows Defender and Firewall are up and running but nothing happens when I deactivate Comodo and Windows defender/firewall. Still the same. I don't know if this is related to a previous update installation (it's on automatic) but I can't make use of my laptop in such conditions.
How do i get my 32 bit apps to adress more than 2 gb of ram? Ive heard you can increase it to 3 or 4 gb & since i have 8gb of ram i dont see any downside to doing so, but ive only heard rumors that this is possible.
I have had a major problem for a while now with my fujitsu siemens laptop, I can use it for about 1 week or so and the laptop will run very slow and will not allow me to access any applications, and my computer acctually crashes now, And yes I have had that annoying blue screen. I have no choice but to wipe the hard drive fully, then re-install windows vista 32bit via the Fujitsu Siemens Recovery Console, I will say I never shut my computer down, I only ever put it on hibernate because I hate waiting for it to boot up, And I do know that the hibernate feature can affect the hard drive, but I can not see why I have this problem,
some times i see small applications , say one i saw recently Thumbnail Sizer, but they often come in a zip file but i don't know what to do with the files when i have them can any body help me you will no doubt realise i have little knowledge of computers
My old desktop is dying so I ordered this new HP tower to replace it. It seems it has a Phenom x4 processor, 4GB RAM and 640GB disk. Delivery is expected in a day or so. Re-reading the spec just now I am horrified to discover it will be pre-loaded with a 64bit OS. But I don't have any 64 bit applications. Use mainly MS Office, WMC, photoshop elements, CorelDraw and a finance package. Although I have a newish LCD monitor my printers and router predate VISTA. Reading the various problems with 64 bit on these forums I am frankly scared. I can't afford a learning curve and non-functionality. What do you advise that I do? Can I down-grade to 32 bit before I start to load applications? Or are the problems with 64 bit over-stated? I know the box is over-spec for what I do but I bought what was in-stock and at a reasonable price.
I'm having trouble opening my applications (.exe) files & shortcuts (.lnk) When I try to double click the following message occur: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an associaton in the Set Associations control panel." ................
I downloaded the trial version..and and trial reset and your suppose to turn off the product tamper protection but it not in the miscellaneous options...how do i find it? Why is it hidden?
I have enabled viewing hidden files and folders. Still, some folders and files are hidden from me! Here is an example: I navigate to eMule folder, which should contain Incoming folder, but does not. I start up eMule, go to Tools and select Go To Incoming Folder and the folder opens up normally showing the files I have downloaded. This problem also exists with a game I own. I'm not able to view the map files I have created with the game. Yet when I start the editor and choose to open a previous map file, it is nicely there in the folder it is supposed to be in.
Last night I was working on an Access database. I closed the file and its folder and then decided to go back in to check something. I opened the folder and THE FILE WASN'T THERE!! Panic and chaos ensued for a while. I was able to find the file by going back into access and opening it from it's most recently used file list. I saved a backup copy etc.....
However, the original file is still not showing up in the folder. I have changed the folder settings to show hidden files, done a search, everything I can think of, but the file won't show up. Thinking that the original is somewhere else and perhaps I have just lost it, I moved a backup copy into the original folder and tried to change it's name to that of the original file. Windows gives me the warning that a file with that name already exists! If it exists, how come I can't see it? The folder says there are 9 items but there are actually 10 if you include this ghost file.
Can someone explain why I can't see these files? See http://www.jamielawson.com/personal/VistaIssues/hidden_psc_files.jpg JPG for more information. If I can't attached I will have to post on my website and repost a link. running Vista Ultimate 64 If you feel this post would be better served elsewhere (security, network sharing).
I have a problem. In the Folder Options/View/Advanced Settings my windows Home premium, dont show "Show hidden files" only "do not Show hidden files" ?? I Run as Administrator. I need see my Hidden Files...
I tried to install this 3X now it stays hidden. The error just says must revert back or something. sorry to be such a pain in the A$$ see attachments for what I have installed as programs and updates.

I have enabled hidden files and protected System files in Explorer. There's about 5GB difference between the listed files and folders and the space used in drive properties. Does Vista REALLY hide things like the hibernation file? (Cos I can't see one on the C drive - pagefile is there but no hibernation file)
I tried to move my personal folders to another drive & got things screwed up. By following some of the advice here I was able to get things back to the default. I only have one problem. Under C:UsersCarrie I can't see the Documents folder. I can see all the other personal folders, but not the Documents folder. At the top of the tree, under my name, Carrie, I can see the Documents folder. If I unhide files & System files I can see the Documents folder under C:UsersCarrie.
I have compared the Documents folder properties with the other personal folder properties to see if I could see a difference. The only difference is on the Document folder the hidden attribute has a check by it but it is grayed out. You can't change it. I thing this might be the problem, but I don't know how to fix it.
