View 5 Replies View RelatedIf you right-click on the taskbar, you can get to the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog and change various settings. Is there some way to change these settings from a C++ (preferably) or VB program? Alternatively, is there a way to change these settings with a registry import? I've looked through the registry and haven't found where they are stored.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows Vista Ultimate with "Aero" and I'd like to turn off the transparency of the taskbar and perhaps also change its color (currently two shades of gray) without disabling "Aero" and without changing the transparency or color effects of other windows. Is this possible? Are there options within Windows or free 3rd party apps that can do this? I've seen this question posed before but with no satisfactory answer.
I notice that maximizing a window makes the taskbar appear opaque, but then I can't see the desktop. I'd like the taskbar to be opaque all the time. I also notice that using a background that's black at the bottom can make the taskbar appear opaque, but that prevents you from having fun with different backgrounds.
Would you like to change the time format in the taskbar to military or international time format?
Click on the Start Button, type in intl.cpl and hit Enter.
Click the Customize this format button.
Click on the Time tab.
Change the time format to H:mm:ss and hit OK.
Hit OK once more to close Regional and Language Options.
Nickle, thanks for sending this tip in!
No sound: it's just not working, and whenever I try to change the volume from the taskbar, a window pops up saying "Volume Control Applet is not responding". Also when I right-click on the sound icon and go to 'playback devices' and then go to the recording tab, it freezes (the window) and says "Windows Shell Common dll is not responding. (I don't know if this is related but my iTunes isn't working, I double-click to listen but the little time bar at the top doesn't move at all, but the window does not freeze)

View 4 Replies View Related(i'm running vista 32bit SP1, i hope its not too out of place to ask a question in a 64bit forum)
this looks like the closest i've found to a forum w/ my prob.
essentially i backed up my HD on an external (western digital) using "second backup" as the backup software.
i noticed after backing up that all my folder icons (favorites, contacts, music, pictures, etc...) reverted to the generic yellow folder.
i was able to change one or two (and only those in the shortcuts in "favorite links" heading of a windows explorer window) by right click -> properties -> change icon but all the folders (in their actual location eg. c:users"username") remain the ugly yellow folder.
changing them one by one seems inefficient and if annoying if it were to occur again.
i've done the right-click on destop -> personalize -> change desktop icon -> restore default, no result (tho i didnt really expect one since the desktop icons arent really the issue)
i've rebuilt the icon cache, no luck.
i've re-written the desktop.ini for a couple of them, no result (tho i didnt really expect one)
system restore isn't an option, i dont have an old enough restore point (hense the need for backing up).
i'm wondering of a systemic way to essentially restore the default icons for all these folders (music, video, downloads, etc...) and their respective shortcuts.
I have vista home premium, all was going well until yesterdayThe PC will boot up normally, I can see everything icons, taskbar all boot up. Once it is all up and ready they dissapear! I can't even right click on desktop nothing happens! The only thing left on desktop is the gaget bar.The only way to get online to internet is by going through the "get more gagets online" part of the gaget bar.

We're all using XP and added Desktop Search, using the search box in the Taskbar for quick searches. I can't seem to find a way to add it to the taskbar in Vista. I need a way to put it in front of him as he won't use it via the Start Menu.

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy taskbar is locked. I can't launch a quick launch item. If I minimise a window I can't get it back. I can't open any items in the systray. mI have been into control panel and unlocked and locked and unclocked the task bar to no avail.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI moved the taskbar to the left edge several months ago, and now I want to move it back. Unfortunately the taskbar seems locked on that edge. I have unlocked the taskbar, and I can resize the quick launch toolbar. The taskbar cannot move or resize. However, the taskbar CAN move and resize in the Safe Mode. I wonder if I changed some registry entry or policy that I don't aware.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am sorry but I am ignorant about the computer system. I have a Toshiba I bout about a year ago that runs Vista. On the computer it says Vista PC Workgroup Processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2Duo My Internet connections have been glitchy lately. Our service is in a package deal (phone, cable, Internet) and usually is pretty good, but lately it was taking several tries to change websites. Someone said that it was due to the number of processes in my task bar. They said it should be around 24, but my has 100.
I am a school teacher and I have Smart Board software which takes up space, but I was wondering how I should know which processes to delete/ end. I tried deleting programs and I somehow lost my sound icon on my toolbar,
There was a sudden power outage that lasted about 1 second and my computer shut down and immediately powered itself up again. Ever since then the taskbar disappeared from my desktop. The resolution was changed too as a result of the outage but I fixed that easily. Pressing the Windows button on my keyboard does not do anything. When I minimize my windows, they disappear to the right of the screen to nowhere. I have tried to see if the taskbar moved over there but it did not.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have purchased a laptop which of course, has vista. I am still on xp on my PC. On my pc I was able to add a second row of icons to my bottom taskbar. All my favorite programs and icons were on there. I cannot find a way to do that on my laptop with vista. Is there a way?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI had this problem recently , when i open any window ( Windows Explorer, Firefox, IE ... etc ) my taskbar disappears without a reason. On the other hand when i minimize all the applications the taskbar appears again this is so annoying because i cant switch between my applications easily and i must press Alt+Tab to switch between them, besides i love the presence of the taskbar so i can see the time, in breif the absence of the sidebar makes me pissed off. this is my normal view of the disktop ( When everything is minimized ) : but when i maximize any window the taskbar disappears and the view SUCKS and looks like that: i tried everything possible, note that the Auto-hide the taskbar option is not enabled.
View 9 Replies View RelatedIt use to be when I would open something it would put icons on the task bar on the right hand side. It would only show two at a time and you could Click the arrow to scroll through. All of a sudden it stopped doing that and it adds them on the left and shows all the programs. Any ideas how to get it back?

Attached is a screenshot of my desktop. The windows transparency is great, but I'd like to get rid of some of the "smokey-ness" of the taskbar.
Yesterday my computer was working perfectly, however when i started my computer up today the screen was completely black and all i had was a mouse, luckily i was able to start task manager and then run programs. I assumed this was a one time vista glitch but just in case, i ran an anti-virus that came out negative. I expected things to be resolved if i restarted my computer, but when i restarted it the same thing, so i restarted one more time, and to my discontent, this time there was not even a mouse, so now i have to write this from vista safe mode in order to access my computer. Attached is my dxdiag if you need to see it.
View 9 Replies View Relatednot sure if thumbnail preview is the right term. - wanted to ask about why or how i might be able to fix ....... scenario: when i open a folder....
1. if its full of pdf files (ex.: e-books) i dont see the preview / covers of the e-books any more as before - just the foxit icon
2. if the folder is full of videos (ex: movies) i dont see a small clip of a scene as before now i only see my VLC Player icon. (the big orange cone) was there some setting that i might changed, not realizing? new things that ive done lately:
.....have tried like crazy to better boot time by following the guide at Black Viper
.....at this moment im using the Vista Basic Theme (no aero). really dont care much for the thumbnail previews on taskbar. have checked: when i open a folder and click on organize & select folder and search options under view tab - the option "always show icons, never thumbnails" is NOT checked. ???? have also tried clearing the thumbnail cache by deleting thumbnails under disk cleanup????
What the title says right after i restarted my computer the taskbar and all my destop icons were gone i still got my sidebar running but thats it. I tried right clicking my desktop nothing showed up. I would like a answer asap

i can't click anything in my quick launch or any open programs. i can only click on the start menu orb and that's it.
I am running Vista Home Premium, and when I turned on my computer, my taskbar was a light gray. I took a picture:
If I open a full screen window (such as Firefox), my taskbar goes back to the normal black color, but if I don't have a full screen window it is that light gray color.
How can I change it back?
I've done some research on the internet and can't seem to find a decent resource for this question, so hopefully someone here can help. My taskbar was translucent by default, and remained that way for a week or 2, but now, it is just solid black. I was told to make sure I don't have any maximized windows, becuase that will cause loss of translucency, but the taskbar is solid even when I have no windows open at all. All of my other Aero translucent objects are displaying accurately, but for some reason, just the taskbar is being difficult. I'm not sure if there is an option to turn the translucency on/off, or if there is something else I'm doing that is forcing it to be solid, but does anyone here have any ideas?
