I have just noticed a minimized window on the taskbar with no name but only a folder icon. If I click it, a black screen appears in the top left corner of the screen with no border. Right clicking does nothing. I have just installed Diskeeper and suspect it may be the culprit.

Now, when I minimize a window it shows as a small strip above that taskbar. How do I get it back like it was when I first installed Vista?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI turn on my computer today, and all of a sudden the minimized tabs for the programs I'm using are on the wrong side of the taskbar. They're on the right side, near the clock, rather than the left side by the start menu. They are also so small that I cannot read them, and if I have more than two they don't show up. I know it's a minor problem, but it's really annoying to me, and I can't figure out how to make them go to the way they were before.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've noticed that if you follow these steps, the cursor isn't on the file anymore:
1) Open a folder with some files.
2) Click on a file. Pressing the arrow keys should move the file selection around (I call this the cursor).
3) Minimize the window.
4) Restore the window.
5) The cursor isn't on the file anymore. The current selected file has a gray background. Pressing arrow keys have no effect on the file selection. Does anyone know how to fix this?
The thumbnails that appear when you move the cursor over minimized applications or windows now don't show the contents of the window properly, apart (it seems!) from Windows Mail....all the others are blank with a small square icon in the middle. Anyone noticed that?

For app. 2 weeks - out if a sudden - on my desktop (and only there) I'm having an unseen phenomenon with the screen layout:
Below the normal parts of the WinMail-window (columns for the folders[left side] and the headers preview and the messages preview [right,upper and lower half]) appears a sub-window with a scrollbar which stretches across the whole WinMail window. This sub-windows always is totally empty (no contents at all).

I cab drag this sub-window bigger and smaller. But there always remain a minimal height determined by the "Up" and "Down" scroll-button (arrows).
I checked literally *everything* to get rid of this totally useless(empty) sub-window. To no avail An I already asked in the German Vista NGs. To no avail either {siiiigh}
I have a question about Windows Vista Home Premium [service pack 1] and Windows Flip. When flipping (alt-TAB) thru active applications on Windows Vista, there is a strange icon on the left side that really has no information. When selected all other apps have a descriptive name but when this particular icon/app is selected, there is no descriptive name or information. When this icon is selected nothing happens but when any of the other apps are selected, the appropriate function happens. The icon has a white box and in the lower right corner it has a few small boxes (each a different size) close together. One box it white, the other is orange, the other is red, the other is blue and the last is white with a small vertical line. Does anyone know what this is and why it is there? If it is nothing I need and it is not system critical, how do I remove it? Here is the icon I am talking about. It is on the left hand side. When highlighted it has no name and when selected it does nothing.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running a laptop with Vista Home Premium, and just recently some of my folders like My Computer and other various folders are opening yet show a blank window, like literally blank. There's not even a URL there, just a blank window. I played around with some registry values (which I shouldn't have) and I believe that's the cause of this problem. Also, when i try to delete some of the files inside folders that manage to open before they crash, the delete prompt stalls at 0. Explorer.exe also seems to have multiple holds on single processes. how get my comp back to shape! (Ps. Did like 3 system restores and a virus scan with no results)

View 4 Replies View RelatedNo sound: it's just not working, and whenever I try to change the volume from the taskbar, a window pops up saying "Volume Control Applet is not responding". Also when I right-click on the sound icon and go to 'playback devices' and then go to the recording tab, it freezes (the window) and says "Windows Shell Common dll is not responding. (I don't know if this is related but my iTunes isn't working, I double-click to listen but the little time bar at the top doesn't move at all, but the window does not freeze)
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have to take medication twice a day, and I tend to forget to take it. Now, I'm always at my computer, when I'm not working, so in the past I always set up outlook to give me notifications twice a day that I needed to take my meds.
Since having to do a clean install of vista, I'm having some problems getting outlook (the whole of office actually) to install properly. The only thing which really works is word, which is basically all I need, apart from the notification thingy of outlook. Also, in the past I noticed that outlook was kind of eating up some resources, and caused some problems if I just left it running all the time. As I use gmail, I didn't have it set up with a mail account, and it kept asking me to set it up, at least twice a week. Anyways, I would prefer not to use outlook anymore.
So right now I'm temporarily using windows calender (or agenda, as it's called in the dutch version), but it can't be minimized to tray. Now, it has the advantage of giving me a notification even if I haven't turned it on. Unfortunately though, it only does so once. If I close the program after I've received a notification, it then no longer notifies me for the next time I need to take my meds.
So I was wondering if anyone knows a (preferably free) program which can give me 2 notifications per day, at preset times. The program needs to not take too many resources, and needs to minimize to tray.
Every time that I open Windows Mail from Internet Explorer, it opens minimized. I must then manually maximize it. I have googled this problem and find it as a general problem in VISTA without any solutions listed,or shall I say that all the solutions listed, like draging or increasing the window size and then to close it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm having a tough time trying to start Gigaget download manager via another program, and have it start minimized to tray. Seems to be no option in the program. If I just start it, then launch NirCmd to send the window a 'hide' message, it minimizes to tray, but then the Open tray menu command won't work. It will only show the button on the taskbar. The window won't actually open.

Whenever I minimize my game of halo, I can't bring it back up for some reason. It'll show in the upper left hand corner Halo, but it wont come up, I wait forever, and it never comes up, so I end up, closing it out, and ending the game. On my old machine which runs XP and has Excel 2003 it works fine.
With Vista, it messes up the dates. I have tried everything. Different browsers, compared settings in Excel, even tried office.org or free office or whatever it is called.
Still won't work. It copies half the dates correctly, and some dates it copies like text or worse. I am not really sure, I cannot type data in to fix the error.
I have a new Gateway with Vista. I am waiting for them to mail me Windows 7.
It is so easy to cut and paste on my other PC, and I have loked in every forum I can find for three days and found nothing that fixes this bug with Vista.
So it is not the Browser, I tried three including IE 8, Opera and Google. It is not Excel, or Star Office as both mess up, it is something with Vista.
I made myself a super admin BTW, on my computer, figured that one out. So I can adjust everything.
I have files dating back ten years that are all gving me date issues. Some work, some do not. I need a fix!

I have a folder under my user in Vista Home Premium. Its name is: {5fa4fc65-86a1-42c8-9cce-0ba76deacf2b} It has a sub-folder named drivers that has a sub-folder named dot4 and that folder is empty.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to burn an audio CD on my computer (i've only had this computer for a few months and this is the first time I've tried burning any kind of disc), and when I put the CD in and hit burn it says that my cd is not blank, I tried a handful of blank cds and it spit them all back out at me saying it's not blank. Just to make sure, I opened my computer and looked at the disc there and it WAS blank, so I don't know what to do.

The thing came up when I clicked the mouse wheel. The mouse is Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 8000. Microsoft software that came with the mouse is installed. Checked the mouse buttons config, and it says that clicking the wheel brings up the Flip 3D.
But, since I use the basic vista theme with Aero disabled (like it more this way), there is no Flip 3D on my machine. When I enable the Aero, clicking the mouse wheel brings up Flip 3D.
Anyone got any idea what is this thing?
Actually i quite like it, because it is fast as hell, way faster and more useful than other third party "expose on windows" third party solutions I tried some time before.
I was wondering how to bring up this thing from my keyboard, but win+tab does nothing. As for now, only clicking the mouse wheel works.
following on from the bug i had Ive scanned the drive with the maxtor/seagate tools and no problems. It seems to be something to do with the harddrive as if is start a checkdisk it almost instantly causes problems, you can move the mouse but nothign responds. If you try and go into ctrl-alt-delete you get a message saying a 'logon process has failed to create the security options dialog'.

View 4 Replies View Relatedmy friend has an alienware comp and it keeps crashing he is running the asus p5 and unfortunatly his warranty has expired it's also running xp it will crash from boot or some times after 10min other times it's after a few hours. he is running a 7800gtx 256mb gpu also, if anyone knows of any fauts this has after 2 years of use would be appreciated i am recommending a new card for him too 9800gt or there abouts something usefull but not overly pricey as he doesn't require it for things like crysis and stuff
i'm looking for things to look for to help him resolve it as the alienware call out charge for him is 600quid i told him to just get a new comp but he would like to keep it for a while i'm going to fit new ram that i have lying around as i think it may be a hardware fault as there is a strange noise coming from his computer possibly making it an overheating issue but when i googled his comp i got a ton of hits on the same fault with the same comp so it's not a one off case and nowhere was there a solution so i figured i'd put to the people.
i have the notebook since a month and everything works fine. however, i always have that strange sound playing in vista. it happens every 5-10mins, i dont know what it it. its not caused by the hardware, but its played by vista, so to make it clear it is a soundfile. i have no clue, which software or whatever causes it. anyone, who has an idea? and no, it was already there with the original setup, it is not because of any software i installed additionally. i would really be happy, if someone knows how to stop that.

View 9 Replies View Relatedim having a problem with one of my usb ports. when using none of the ports at all, vista will randomly "find" a usb device and tell me that it can perform faster. even though there is nothing plugged in (spooky) so after much confusion, i tried to plug my external hard drive in to all my ports (1tb buffallo if your woundering) and when i plugged it into the last one, my computer got a blue screen, with writing on it ( not the blue screen of death tg) saying that it has a problem with one of the usb drivers, and that it needs to shut down to save the computer it only does this when i use this port though. otherwise i just get the "this device can perform faster" thing popping up ever 10 mins or so

When I tried to start the computer, the "Windows is resuming" screen just sits there. indefinitely and the green progress bar at the bottom is extremely slow. I tried deleting the hiberfil.sys file and re-enabled hibernation, but the same problem keeps occurring. So I started browsing the event logs and I found that every time I hibernated the system today I got an: The previous system shutdown <at time/date> was unexpected error. Which is strange as it was not unexpected for me, I initiated it. What could be causing this?
