Mail And Contacts Folder
Jun 25, 2008
I want to move my "My Documents" folder, etc to a separate partition on my hard drive. I started moving the folders, My Documents, My Pictures, My Music, etc and when I got to the Contacts folder everything screwed up. Now I can't use Windows Mail. When I try to launch Windows Mail the first message I get is:
"CONTACTS FAILED TO LOAD."

THE NEXT IS:
"WINDOWS MAIL COULD NOT BE STARTED. THE APPLICATION WAS UNABLE TO INITIALIZE WINDOWS CONTACTS. YOUR COMPUTER MAY BE OUT OF MEMORY OR YOUR DISK IS FULL(0X8000FFFF)." The third is: "WINDOWS MAIL COULD NOT BE STARTED BECAUSE MSOE.DLL COULD NOT BE INITIALIZED."

My Windows mail contacts folder seems to have become mixed up with the Media Player in that there are Artist, Album, Genre and rating columns in the window....is this a Vista characteristic? I have only had the OS for a week, and am still learning.

I'm new to the Forum so I hope I'm doing this correctly. Anyway, initially I was trying to create a mailing group, but could not see a choice for that option in my Contacts folder. Turns out it was set on "Pictures and Videos" and I read, in this Forum, how to fix that so it would show my list of contacts, and would therefore show the choice for setting up a group. That worked fine. My problem is - my changes don't seem to want to stay! For instance, today I was working in my picture folders, and then when I went back into Windows Mail and clicked on Contacts, it was back to showing "Pictures and Videos!" Why won't it stay on Contacts after I configure the folder? I do click "Apply" and then "OK," but that doesn't seem to make a difference. It keeps changing back.

For some reason my contacts folder started behaving like a pictures folder and could no longer import .csv files etc. So, in haste I deleted it and tried to create a new one, but it just behaves like an ordinary folder and not like the 'special' contacts folder...

When I click the contacts button in Windows Mail, it gives me a folder view of all my contacts. There is no button to add a new contact and no way to create a new group. Is this something I accidentally turned on?

I have many contacts and the list is to long to scroll through to select email recipients. Since the advent of Windows Mail, to easily select recipients from contacts folders, I have been selecting them (highlighting them with CTRL & mouse click) and then using the File, Action, Send Email options. This opened a new message with the selected recipients. This is no longer working.

Forgive me, but I am new to Vista and Windows Live Mail. I set up my Contacts folder by importing addresses from Outlook Express (.wab file). However, when creating a message from within Windows Live Mail, not all of the Contacts are shown there. I placed the Contacts folder on my desktop for easy access, and when I look there, the addresses that I am missing are shown. It's as if the Windows Live Mail software is using another Contacts folder. I checked the Options tab under Tools to see if the address source requires identification, but could not find such a reference.

I've read several comments regarding the problem I have found about using windows vista mail, all with the same result - no useful solution. Having just moved from Outlook Express, I am accustomed to using sub folders under contacts. I set up subfolders in Vista contacts but they do not show up when I wish to forward an email using "To:" to select members of a folder, ie "family"
How inconvenient to have to search through all 300 or so addresses to find the 5 or 6 I want to forward to. "Family" is mixed in with all the rest. Creating a group is inappropriate when I do not want to send to ALL addresses in a group. Any news on a correction to this problem?
Or, is it possible to import Outlook from my XP system to use on this new one? The "work arounds" I have seen suggested are rediculous - this seems a serious flaw in the product to me! Any news of an improvement with SP2? (I have SP1 preinstalled) So far I find Vista NOT user friendly! Each problem requires hours of research to discover there is no solution...

Whenever I click on the 'contacts' icon in Windows Mail, instead of taking me to a screen to manage my contacts (like the help screen says it will), it shows me the contents of the contacts file. Why is it
doing this? I just want to create a contact group (distrib. list).

I am maintained Vista laptops for two elderly people and set them up on Internet Mail, they were on OE before. They like that it grabs contacts for them, the problem is that it duplicates them relentlessly: say Fred emails you often you get a Fred contact a (1) Fred, a (2) Fred, etc... For the life of me I can't find were to fix this, the knowledge base offers me the right choices but finds no documents. Does anybody have this problem? I can easily download Thunderbird for them but I'm trying to keep these laptops as simple as possible.

I have just talked a friend (over the phone) on how to "Export" her Vista Mail Contacts as A comma separated file. She is going to dump Vista and install Win XP (and OE). The file has been saved as an excel file onto a USB Mem Stick She will be installing Office 2007 etc, Will OE be able to "Import" the CS File into her "New" OE Address Book? (Each mention I have seen describes the CS File as a "text" file)

Is there a way in windows mail or any other mail to make a group of contacts to which I can send an email message to all of the contacts in that group without the receiver seeing to whoever i send the email. Because when i just select all my contacts and mail them they all see who i sent the email to. I just want to be able to send an email to a lot off people whitout a huge list of receivers in every mail.

I was recently switched to a new ISP (Comcast). I'm trying to figure out a way to copy my contact list from Windows Mail to the Comcast Webmail site. They have some help screens for moving it from Outlook Express by exporting the Address Book. I'm not seeing any options in Windows Mail to export contacts via a .cvs file. Is there a way to do it?

I am being forced to use this tacky Windows Live mail program (coz I want to open attachments after IE8!), I have installed it and as I would expect from a Microsoft install it didn't go smoothly!
After quite some period of time the install program announced that it could not import my contacts - probably the most important aspect of my mail program!
It tells me to do so manually, with no instruction how to of course. I am merely told to point the program in the direction of my Winmail address book.
