Installing Office 2003 Is A Mess

Dec 6, 2009

I purchased Office 2003 on disk and I installed it on my old XP machine. When I used the same disk to install Office 2003 on my new Vista machine, I was taken by surprise when I was asked if I wanted Office 2007. I said yes, thinking that it was a free update for Vista. Now I have the following 3 problems, of which I have solved only the first one: When I open a Word file by double-clicking in Explorer, the file opens under Office 2007 and asks if I want to install it, which I do not. I solved this problem by first opening Word 2003 with the icon on the desktop and now all my Word files open with this version and I don't get Office 2007 messages. Solved. When I follow the same procedure with Excel 2003, the trick doesn't work i.e. I can't open an Excel file under Office 2003 by double-clicking. The file always opens under Office 2007 and asks me if I want to buy it.

The PowerPoint icon is not on my desktop and I can't find the Powerpoint 2003 version anywhere. The disk installed it on my XP machine, so why not on my Vista machine? I never had such installation problems with a software. Normally I buy the software and I say yes to everything and everything I paid for is installed. I must say that I am extremely irritated with the change to Vista, as I have already lost many hours fooling around with taking ownership of my own computer, changing properties all over the place, etc. I could now try to uninstall all Office versions and hope that it works better with a new installation. What do I have to look out for, so that I get the same installation result as I got on my XP machine?

Create Symbolic Links & Directory Junctions (hard & Soft File System Links)

Feb 14, 2007

Windows Vista includes a great little utility that allows users to finally make soft and hard file system links in the file system.  This can be very useful from a software compatibility standpoint as well as a great way to organize your computer.  Unlike a shortcut, a link is at the file system level and can be used to create an alias for a file or folder that is in a different location.  For example, you can create a hard link (Directory junction) called c:win that points to c:windowssystem32. After the link is created, you can open up command prompt or explorer and browse to c:win and you will see the contents of c:windowssystem32. This is not a new technology, it has actually been a core Linux and Unix feature for as far as I can remember but it is nice to finally have it in Windows Vista....

Links Button Looks Like Chain Links

Apr 15, 2008

my friend's email is thru gmail. she has a links button (looks like chain links) that she uses to provide links to websites *without* showing the website address. it simply highlights a word she has typed and the mail recipient clicks on that word to go to the website. i think several words (a phrase) can be highlighted as well as just one word. so she might say, 'click here for more info' and the word *here* will be highlighted and contains the link. does windows vista mail have this feature? i cannot find it.

Unusable MAPI?

Jul 27, 2009

I just began using Vista Home Premium (SP1 installed) 64bit and I am trying out the trial version of Microsoft Office that came on my new HP. I wanted to create a mail merge letter in Word 2007 and then email it out to a group of folks using Windows Mail version 6.0. Creating the email was easy. I then tried to select "email" from the drop down Word mail merge menu to finish it, but the email choice was grayed out. In Googling on Vista, email and Word, I get the feeling this might have something to do with a missing or otherwise unusable MAPI? I tried installing Microsoft Mail Live, but no difference in results. I have no other problems communicating across my home network or via broadband to the internet.

Hard Drive Is Corrupt And Unusable

May 17, 2009

The Event Viewer of my friend's computer shows a lot of errors saying that his hard drive is corrupt and unusable. On every re-boot the Disk Checker starts up and does its thing only to report there are no problems.

Could there be some other hardware problem that would cause Vista to report these type of errors? My friend did take his machine into the shop to be checked out be a Certified Technician and they told him that everything was OK. At least they did not charge him for the service.

I am a bit concerned that he had a lot of programs operating in the background which caused a lot of memory swapping as he has only 1GB of memory. What is the minimum amount of recommended memory for Vista now? I think it used to be 1.5GB, has that changed?

Login Screen Is Unusable And Reboots Endlessly

Jan 7, 2010

I am having a strange problem with my Windows Vista Home Premium installation. The login screen loads and I can write the user and password boxes, but when I insert the password for my user and I hit the enter button or click the arrow button it does nothing. Clicking on shutdown options button does nothing. Pressing ctrl+alt+del does nothing. And after about 30 seconds it reboots and all the same happen endlessly. I tried all the recovery options ( boot in safe mode, last working configuration, disable restart at error, etc... ) and all have the same behavior.

I booted with the Windows Vista Recovery Tools from the DVD and I used chkdsk. It says that found errors and corrected them but when I run again the chkdsk the same errors are reported and corrected. Used sfc /scannow with the offline options and it says that found some corrupted files and is unable to correct them, but when I check the logs no relevant errors are found. Tested the memory and the hard drive using ubuntu live cd and the results were that both are ok. With ubuntu live cd I am able to boot and access all the windows files.

This is not the error "installing updates 3 of 3" or the black screen of death after welcome screen. This happened when I was using the pc and suddenly it freezed and I pressed the power button to do a hard shutdown. After that these symptoms started. Until there everything was fine. I didn't download any virus, as I am a computer programmer and I know what I am doing I just can't understand this error. What do you guys think it is? Is it a virus or some of the system files are corrupted or a hardware problem? I would not like the reinstall vista option because I have a lot of data and a lot of programs installed. What other options do I have? By the way the Vista I have is Service Pack 2.

Installing Programs: Registry Mess

Jul 4, 2008

Possibly I should have read a few forums and tutorials when I first got my new Vista computer before downloading and installing a bunch of programs, but alas I didn't and now I have something of a mess. I have some program files installed to my user account, I have some installed to the Admin account because I couldn't install them to my user account, and now I have some programs that absolutely must be installed to the user account in order to work properly but can't be because of the whole Denial of Administrator Privileges that has been brought into the picture with Vista.

I also strongly suspect some program files got installed twice also. Maybe not, but when I configure a program in my user account (like iTunes or Microsoft Outlook) those changes are not evident on the admin account. And an outrageous amount of the space on my C drive has eaten up already, much more than I suspect I've actually installed. Basically, I would really, really love to get all of the program files onto one account, preferably the Admin account, make sure any duplicates are taken care of, and otherwise clean it up because i don't want a big sluggish registry mess within a month of owning this computer. Something like that?

VISTA 32bit - 64bit Upgrade Mess

Apr 1, 2008

I currently own a Sony VAIO running on VISTA Ultimate 32bit. This version was upgraded from Windows VISTA Home Premium through Windows-Upgrade-Anywhere. Because of various issues with VISTA and my Laptop I decided to upgrade to a faster machine with 4 Gig Ram. I now would like to upgrade me VISTA Ultimate 32bit to VISTA Ultimate 64bit to remove the 3 Gig RAM restrictions.

Unfortunately no one at Microsoft could really tell me how to do this. This is a all a big mess and trying to find information is really hard. The company I run has a icrosoft Action Pack subscription and I now even have 10 VISTA Business/Ultimate licenses... but again... all for 32bit. I really don??t understand why it needs to be so hard to simply swap a 32bit acquired license for a 62bit one. It??s an unnecessary restriction. From a Microsoft Hotline I learned that swapping 32bit/64bit is no issue if I bought a boxed version of VISTA Ultimate. The funny thing is that the same Hotline told me months ago that there is no difference between buying a "virtual license" through Upgrade-Anywhere and buying the boxed version.

Can Mess Your System Up Good And Proper, Point,

Sep 8, 2009

Anyone know of a good free Cloning program that is 64bit compatible? for Vista ultimate being upgraded to win7 for the specific purpose of making an exact restore-able image of the HD. That can be copied to a reformatted harddrive after a major colaps of the os or virus damage? I also want to be-able to do a periodic erasure of said hd for security and privacy purposes. which I would do before formatting the HD again. I like to download a try a lot of free stuff and as you know it can mess your system up good and proper, to the point, its better to start over from a cloned image of factory settings that are up to date .

Windows Update Mess, Couldn't Find Newsgroup

Aug 15, 2009

I couldn't find a newsgroup that was English Windows updates, so since most updates involve security issues I guess I will vent here. This is the second time in about two months that my Vista Home Premium 32 bit desktop computer has been stuck in Update hell. It was perfectly fine all day yesterday and then when I started it this morning, it went to the green and blue screen "Configuring Updates State 3 of 3 0% complete Do not turn off your computer" and then it restarts, only to return to that exact same screen.

After watching it do that at least six times I finally turned it off. It took me about 14 more tries to get to start in a "safe" or "repair" mode which it is in now, still being "repaired." That was two hours ago. When this happened last time it was at the exact same point with the 3 of 3 screen. It seems that the only solution to this would be to turn off automatice updates and check for them and install them when my computer is not coming out of a cold start. Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone have a better solution to avoid this than turning off automatice updates?

No Video On 64 Startup, Change Video Settings

Apr 19, 2008

I have a quad-boot Intel CoreDuo machine with 4 GB of memory and an ATI AIW X1900 Radeon (multi-booting courtesy of EasyBCD). To put the matter as quickly as possible, all four systems (Vista 32, Vista 64, XP, and Ubuntu) have been happily coexisting for a long time. I haven't used Vista 64 for about 10 days and went in to do some work on it this morning. To my surprise, the video disappeared immediately after the green startup wait indicator. Eventually, after about the usual amount of time and hard disk activity, the startup sound came on but absolutely no video. I restored my full backup of the Vista 64 partition from last Sunday=97 same problem!

I went in on safe mode but it is impossible to change video settings or install new drivers in safe mode so that was a dead end. I tried the repair utility that comes with Vista but it could find no problem with startup. My working hypothesis is that something has gone wrong with the video drivers although that may not be the case. Even if it were, I can think of no way of fixing it short of completely rebuilding the Vista 64 system checked desperately do not want to do

Easy Way To Convert Mod/Tod Video To Regular Video

Jun 5, 2009

who has purchased a JVC Everio HDD video camera has probably learned that they chose to use some god forsaken proprietary video format - the .MOD extension. Apparently this is some sort of MPEG2 encoding, however, most major video editing suites prefer not to accept this format? what we need is something more common? such as .AVI or .MPG. I would be happy with the .MOD file format if the software that came with the JVC Everio actually worked.

I have tried many video converters software with no luck so far, it?ll get halfway through the process, and then something will fail. Now a type of converter called *'Mod Converter' appears. Here I want to share the one regarded as the best on the market by most people. I also want to share the instructions about how to use it. Web Links Opening In Word

Feb 25, 2010

When I click on a web link in an application, it opens the url in MS Word, not Firefox (default bowser).

For example:

In CCleaner if I click the 'check for updates' link in the bottom of the window, Word will open up, a download box will appear and then it displays the website as a document.

This happens for all apps, however it doesn't happen if I click on a .html/.url document from explorer, that will launch Firefox just fine.

Links Not Working In Any Web Browsers.

Jun 8, 2008

At first I thought this was an IE7 problem but after installing Firefox the problem exists there as well.
Problem:

Most of the links on web pages will NOT connect from this machine. For instance, using any Search Engine (Live search, Google, Ask.com etc) I can NOT connect to any of the sponsored links. When I copy and paste the named web address for that link then I connect without a problem.

I've posted in the IE and Firefox groups without even getting a suggestion.I had even uninstalled spybot and adaware and stopped the firewall and kaspersky but the problem remained. It looks to me like a security setting but I don't know where else to look.
