I'm running Vista on aHP laptop and it takes forever to boot up. I don't know of anything that is installed that would slow it down so much. I do have Nortons and a wireless mouse and keyboard. Can anyone tell me what to look for that might speed up the boot time? I know it's a lot slower that when I got the laptop a year ago.
Just did a clean install of VISTA Home Premium SP2 including all MS updates on an AMD dual core, 3GB RAM, 250GB HP. Also installed MS Office 2007 and a few other mainstream apps.
Tried using built-in disk defragmenter but gave up after 10-12 hours. Tried running from the command line with a few switches - and gave up after 8 hours. Running defraggler right now. Got to 50% in first 2.5 hours. At 74% after an additional 11 hours - just hit 75%. I think it took 2-3 hours to go from 74-75. It's still flipping through the files but doesn't seem to be progressing. Defraggler shows "8 fragmented files (22GB); 43 total fragments; 22% fragmentation." I guess I'll let it run through the night.
How long should it take to defrag a clean install of VISTA? On XP, a long defrag might be an hour or so. I'm so frustrated.
so when I delete something it goes to the recycle bin. When I delete something from the recycle bin it is gone forever. -THINK AGAIN- I deleted somthing from the recycle bin and got it back a few days later...I also found a ton so stuff I was told was "deleted" forever by Windows. I brought it back (using some uber-simple free program) just to see it it was really there (not just a file name) I was able to open it and read it as well as continue to edit it... This is PROBLEMATIC; some of these files contain sensitive data such as SSNs', medical info, and other stuff that I had believed to be "deleted" and wasn't. Why is it still on there and how do I delete it FOREVER? (Without drilling holes in my HD) >>I'm packing a Dell XPS 1530 running a home edition of Microsoft Vista
I get the screen that says "Windows is loading files", and then I get the screen with the loading bar at the bottom (the one that looks a bit like the standard Windows XP loading bar) and then the screen goes black and nothing happens. I've tried leaving it for a good half hour, still to no avail.
I'm running Vista Home Premium and have just installed a Canon LBP5000 Colour Laser. It works okay but printing anything takes forever... A colour picture can take up to 5mins to print and a simple paragraph in black on a single sheet will take 2 to 3 minutes. I've tried uninstalling & reinstalling the printer software/drives but no difference. This printer was on an XP machine and when printing from that it was as good as gold. I tried sharing it off the XP machine to the Vista machine but got the same result... slow as a wet week! Has anybody got any ideas? The way things stand the Canon is virtually unusable.
I installed CoD 4 on steam on my Vista Ultimate 64 bit version and when I click to start the game, it says ""Preparing to launch Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare..." and it stays there FOREVER until I click "cancel."
i dont know if this goes hear, but ill post it anyways,i uninstalled a program and went to uninstall another and my program and features looked like this it has the same file(but with the differnt language to it) also it takes forever to load.
I went to turn it on this morning, I just had a black screen showing the following words;
Press F2 to run Press F11 to boot menu Auto detecting PRI Master Atapai CDROM.
It then went to reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I went into the BIOS to change the boot order and inserted my Vista home premium 32bit. I then got windows is loading in files. After a short while I got the black start up screen with Microsoft Corporation but after a few seconds it just froze. Moments later it went to a blue screen with white writing part of which said the following; A PROBLEM HAS BEEN DETECTED AND WINDOWS HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN TO PREVENT DAMAGE TI YOUR COMPUTER.
i can no longer boot up my computer as the boot/bcd file is miising or corrupt i found a windows artical on how to fix it and it didnt work ive also tryedd googleing the problem and got many results but none that seem to fit the problem or are helpful what can i do to solve this
I have a Dell Inspiron 530 Desktop and every now and then it won't boot up. I get a black screen with 'Windows Boot Manager' ," Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause."
File: BootBCD Status: 0xc000000f Info: An error occurred while attemping to read the boot config data.
When I boot the PC with the Installation disc, it repairs it and it works until the next time. When I click on the details to see what is to be repaired, this come up:.......
I have windows xp installed right now and I dual booted with vista by re-partitioning my hard drive. After encountering problems with vista I delted the vista partition and resized the xp partition back to it's original size. I am now stuck with the windows vista boot loader which persistantly telling me that the windows vista files are not present etc. etc. Is there any way that I can delted the vista bootloader and go back to using the xp bootloader?
Vista used to boot up very quickly. Now it spends ages on the page with the "loading" bar. Is it performing some sort of CHKDSK during this time? I only have sidebar and rocket dock starting up, and it's fast again when it gets to the desktop, it's just that loading bit takes quite an ages, and it didn't used to. Virus/spyware/malware free. How do i find out if it's doing some sort of chkdsk at boot?
I have more or less completed all the driver upgrades and windows updates but I keep getting repeated boot failures of Vista. I can always get into Safe mode but in Normal mode the boot fails just after the first spash screen at the point when the screen goes blank to be replaced by the small circular Vista logo. After 2 or 3 attempts it succeeds to load but then the problem seems to reoccur, particularly when I have been back to XP for a while.
I had a similar problem with XP but that seems to have sorted itself out. I have tired looking in the logs for faults and failures but no clues there. I am running an ASUS P5E MB with Intel Quad 6600, 4Gig RAM, GeForce 8800GT and 2x250Gig HDs.
This is the best install I have ever done (or was)…I did a fresh install and followed a tweak which was to very enlightening, to say the least. From there I have been to a few other sites and moved on to fully customizing my desktop/login and……well…this is where I stuffed up…My BOOT screen no longer works properly, even with the original “winload.exe.mui” file replaced.
I downloaded and used “Vista Boot Logo Generator” I loved the results on my last install…It worked well. Upon deciding to do a fresh install with Tweaking in mind, I simply coppied over a Boot logo I made previously after allowing permissions and all that as well as changing the NO GUI in msconfig…ect….BUT......
i am new to this forum but i have problem with my system bootup. my system takes too long to boot and it started 3days ago. it takes about 120secs at bootscreen alone. i believe it is not my start up programs as it takes about 3 secs to start up from login page. i donot use any third party bootscreen. normally, my system boots in 30 secs but now i am facing a lot of problem which i do not understand. i have tried all the tutorials in this forum relating to bootup problems but found no luck.
XP is on 1st primary partition [active] and is old. Vista is on 2nd Primary partition and is new. Dual boot info, I believe, is all on the XP partition. Soon I will want to go to Vista only. Do I just delete the XP partition (after imaging it, of course!) and set Vista partition to active? (Paragon Partition Manager). Will it then automatically boot into Vista (which has no boot.ini)?
I've had Vista x64 installed for about 2 full months now and I've recently begun having a lot of problems. One being: 187 seconds. What the hell? Before you ask, here are my specs. Lots of fast memory, a fast processor, 7200RPM boot drive (not listed), and ****ing awful performance. What gets me is that the delayed boot time is before I even see the "Welcome" screen.
My current boot time distribution: 1. BIOS does all its fancy stuff very quickly (about 6-7 seconds or so) 2. I get to my boot loader and it defaults to Vista after 5 seconds (dual-booting Vista/Ubuntu). 3. I then see the Vista loading screen (black screen with green loading bar) for about 4-5 seconds................
hp tool ask to do this "Then please go to using DOS system files column and add the link to where you stored the unzipped DOS boot up files. "so my question is , where can i get the "dos boot up files" for vista64? with the hp tool i need to locate the dos boot file address . so how do i do that? do i have to download vista64 boot files? every google links explains how to do this with xp. couldnt find any for vista. makes me feel like im the only person on the planet using vista.
I have installed Vista on my C: disk. After that I installed XP on D: disk. Now I can't boot Vista anymore. I tried with boot.ini. I've read that there's a program called bcdedit.exe. I tried to make that one work on XP, but I failed. I don't have Vista's DVD, and I'm trying to avoid installing XP again. If there's any way around...I would be gratefull! (Is there any way I can edit bcdedit.exe in XP?)
I was running dual boot fine between XP and Vista now im running both Vista it only reads my newly installed drive on boot and i have no boot options as you do in XP/Vista installs, im a newbie to dual drives and was wondering how to set it to have boot options now!
I searched all over the internet for this simple (I think) problem, but I couldn't find any solutions. I have installed Vista on my C: disk. After that I installed XP on D: disk. Now I can't boot Vista anymore. I tried with boot.ini. I've read that there's a program called bcdedit.exe. I tried to make that one work on XP, but I failed.
I once read a post about a boot menu reappearing on every boot. Did a seach on google and found as the 10th result the post I needed (i recognised the text in the preview shown). Search on google 'site:www.microsoft.com boot menu'Found:But......that thread no longer exists. Also I cannot find that post again. With this post result? With a boot menu reappearing?
I have a HP pavilion laptop which came with 64 bit vista ultimate pre-installed. I shrinked the OS partition (160 GB), created new partition (40 GB) for 64 bit windows 7 ultimate. After installation of Windows 7, I cannot see the vista ultimate boot option when I boot my PC. When I boot into Windows 7, I still can see the vista partition. But instead of C: it is now displayed as E: I used the HP Recovery Disc to repair windows vista but I can only see a blank blue screen with the mouse pointer. How can I recover the vista?
The other night I was in a rush and I held down the power button until it shut off. the next day I tryed turning it on and after the MB homepage came up for 3 secs on the top left hand corner of the screen it said "Disk boot failure, please insert boot disk and press enter" so i fooled around with the priority settings a little bit and nothing worked. I then inserted the windows vista CD and it would say "Loading windows files" then the loading bar came up and it would always freeze at the same point and after about a minute a blue screen came up saying a problem occured and is shutting off the computer to prevent further damage. Iv tryed everything. could my hard drive be damaged or something? Please someone help me. I cant work with much because i cant even get into windows! :-( All i can work with is the Setup menu
I bought a new pc for my work which has all the bells and whistles. Of course the kids want access to the pc so that they can play the latest games. I prefer not to install any games on the pc. I have a couple of licenses for both Vista Ultimate and XP Pro. Is there any way to install either Vista or XP on a USB drive and install their games on that. When they want to play, they can just boot their drive off USB, making use of the hardware on my pc?
We just bought 2 Toshiba Satellites A200, both run Vista Home Premium. Now one does not boot. Some of the screen messages read:
"Windows Error Recovery" "Windows failed to start." "Launch repair (recommended)"
When we click Launch repair the screen goes to Windows Boot Manager and it reads: "Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer.
This error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as an external usb drive while the device is in use, or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or cd-rom drive that is failing. Make sure any removable storage is properly connected and then restart your computer. If you continue to receive this error message, contact the hardware manufacturer.......
I've been trying to install First Defense-ISR Rescue on this computer and it won't install, it gets a -11 code and quits. The code means This means the boot sector is not a standard Windows boot sector. I have Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit. My question is, if I remove the Recovery Partition D will this change the boot sector. I have factory backup DVD's and made my own DVD's, plus I have a TI image of the drive so I'm OK in that department.
Spent 2 days getting our new self-built computer up n running with i7 920 and vista 64 bit. had probs w/crashes and stuff so we have it running for 8 hours with no problems. I must admit I think vista beats xp all over the place!
Computer takes multiple tries to get it to POST and boot. (yesterday it booted great then crashed a lot). sometimes if it sits a few minutes eventually it will boot up, other times it boots slowly the first try.
bios boot order is hd first then dvd player, and when it seems to be doing nothing it does excite the dvd player every 15 seconds or so.
have run post/boot with everything unplugged except monitor but still follows the same pattern.
