In the information on computer clock syncronization with an internet time server I read: "Your clock is typically updated once a week". Is there any way I can change this interval? My computer clock isn't too accurate so I should like to syncronize say at least daily instead of once a week.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThe first issue is that Vista hangs for about 1 minute just after it's prepared the desktop before it allowing avast! and msn to run in the system tray. Just after msn / avast are allowed to run the wireless network icon appears in the system tray. I should just clarify, when I say "hangs" the OS doesn't freeze, there's just a minute or so delay before avast and msn are allowed to run - very annoying! I've disabled the onboard wired lan because I thought that it was perhaps trying to obtain an ip by dhcp, but that made no difference. The other issue is that my Intel Pentium M 1.7Ghz processor seems to be stuck at 100% Maximum Frequency and does't scale back to 600Mhz like it did under XP.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI cannot use or change the settings of Windows Update in any way. I've tried reinstalling the Windows Update Agent, but nothing changes. I have found no way of uninstalling it either. This alone is not the biggest problem, but the program has set itself to default and downloads hundreds of MB's of useless updates daily, which forces me to wait 30 minutes before the laptop turns on, and another 10 minutes of "reverting changes" because they "were not configured properly". Is there any way to fix this besides reformatting or reinstalling the OS? Install missing files? Somehow disable the agent? Uninstall it?
i'm logged in as an administrator yet i can't change the settings in automatic update. i can see the settings but they are greyed and "locked". Has anyone seen this issue? It may have been there all along i just never cared to change the settings until the pending SP1 release. i want to be there when it happens instead of the default setting of 3am!

View 5 Replies View RelatedLast Thursday my pc downloaded and installed the latest set of updates and since then the Internet speed has been sluggish at best and non-existant at worst.
I contacted my ISP and they did all their tests and announced that the signal was good and I might have a virus, so I got a bit paranoid and ran scan after scan (after the nightmare of trying to get the latest updates). I ran these with Zone Alarm Extreme and Spyware Doctor (but not together) and all the results were clean.
So I'm wondering if the latest Updates are to blame; one of the kids' laptops has exactly the same problem (he uses a router while I use a cable) and he downloaded the updates at the same time.
Interestingly the other kid's laptop seems to be untouched, but he has 32 bit Vista as opposed to our 64 bit, and it appears that we're all using different browsers (IE8, Mozilla and Chrome)
My PC had been working fine until 10th Sept when I downloaded some new updates from Microsoft, at once the internet connection slowed to a trickle.
I contacted my ISP but after running some tests they said their signal strength was good and suggested I had a virus or a trojan. Cue outbreak of paranoia and much scanning with various programmes (which all had extreme trouble downloading their updates), after they all came up clean - apart from a few minor trackers - I posted a thread in the 'Network and Internet' forum and was advised to check the Events Viewer.
This showed a flurry (about 50 or so) Yellow Flags saying that the last updates may not have been applicable to my system, after some Google searching about these updates and the internet I narrowed it down to KB905866, but even after uninstalling the internet connection is still a trickle.
I tried uninstalling all the 10th Sept updates but that made the IE8 very unstable (sudden crashes and hanging), so put them back on just to get back to where I was.
I thought I'd set the PC to create Restore points but there were none, but one of the posts on another Forum about this update says it can wipe Restore points.
I was using ZoneAlarmExtreme when this started, but have now uninstalled it and am running Kaspersky 2010 and there are no conflicts of firewalls etc.
I am running Windows Vista 64bit edition on an Asus P5Q Deluxe motherboard, Intel Q9540 2.66gz Quadcore processor with 4gb RAM. My system has been running fine for the last year and just last night (27th June 2009) windows told me there were 3 updates that should be installed. I only noticed one of the update names which was Internet Explorer 8, the other 2 were security updates or something - really not sure though. The total of the downloaded updates was around 280mb.
Anyway... So I started installing the updates and walked away. When I came back there was a Terms & Agreement box for Internet Explorer 8 which I agreed to. Once that finished it came back to my desktop and said "windows needs to restart to configure the updates, please restart now."..........
Dell forward a bunch of updates from Microsoft yesterday. One was Security Update KB950759. After this was installed I couldn't access the internet. After I uninstalled it everything worked. Again today it was sent by Dell and installed-same thing, couldn't access internet until I uninstalled it.

My Os is taking like 35 GB:S mostly winsxs folder(18 gb) I removed the restore points a while ago. I removed the temp sp1 files. Now i hav a full hard disk can't update my os can't do nothing except browsing the internet lol I feel like I'm using knoppix. I am running Vista Home premium, IE8, Firefox 3.5.3, AVG free and Zonealarm. On starting the PC there is no problem connecting to the internet through either browser or updating email (Windows Mail).

Loss of internet connection via IE and/or Firefox whilst Mail can still send/receive. I have tried clearing the cache etc but the only thing that works is re-booting the laptop (Dell XPS 1330).
I mainly browse with IE but downloaded Firefox in case IE was the problem. One or the other will lose connection first then the other will follow.
The Windows Update for the "nvidia nforce networking controller" caused my internet to not work properly. I restored my system and rolled back the driver, both on separate occasions to resolve this issue. It worked, however, now I need to know what to do about the update. I cannot leave my settings to update automatically because of this.

I'll change it and then the next time I reboot it may have it correct or it may have it wrong. But eventually I notice that it's back to being off by 1 hour. I am running XP Home edition with all the latest updates.

This always happen when Ive been using the PC for around 1hr or more. If I close the explorer.exe application and run it again (the explorer.exe app) the problem goes away but after a while it backs. I already install the latest drivers for my graphic card, the refresh rate of the monitor its ok... Im running out of ideas and I been looking all day for a solution, you are my last chance
I just got a new HP pavillion dv3 with vista home primium. But every time the computer went to sleep the clock and date stopped. I could not find out why, tried to remove sync with internet but nothing helped. But then we tried to correct the time and date ind bios and now it works Don't know why but it does. So if anyone else have the same problem I think it is worth trying.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just got a new computer. HP G60-235DX. I'm going out for vacation and I want to massivly underclock the 2Ghx Core Dual Processor so it can last longer. Vista's current power save mode increases the battery life but not as long as I want.
I was downloading CPU clock Monitering software and I noticed that Vista's built in power options actually changes the clock speeds but I can't find an option to let me manually choose the clock speed. For High Performance, it is 2 Ghz (as expected). For Balanced, it is 1.6 Ghz, and Power saver, it is 1.2 Ghz. I want to under clock my notebook to 600 or 700 mhz. What should I do. My bios, does not support over/under clocking.
Does anyone know how to use Vista's built-in power options to configure the clock speed? If not then, can you tell me some programs that can with a little explaination on how to use them? I've used a few and they are confusing.
I am quite a big fan of Chameleon Clock. I believe it's a brilliant enhancement to the normal clock that comes with Windows. I have been using it with XP Pro (x86) all the time. However, since moving to Vista Ultimate (x64), Chameleon Clock no longer appears on the taskbar. It's running fine, it still does all the functions (like alarms, reminders, clock chimes, etc), and I can still access it by hovering over the normal clock. But it just does not show the clock itself. I've just got the normal Vista one, which really quite defeats the point of having Chameleon Clock in the first place.
I've put up with it because the most important functions still work, but I do not understand why it will not appear. I have done nothing different to XP, and I have tried loads of different settings. The website for Chameleon Clock says it's Vista compatible, yet it does not seem to work for me. Maybe perhaps it's because of 64-bit? I do not know... Has anyone else got Chameleon Clock to show on Vista Ultimate x64?
Vista x64 I had the orange calendar and old style analogue wall clock appearing on the upper right hand side of the desktop. They have disappeared. However, for reasons of saving resources, I have set Vista to boot with Selective Startup only, so this may be the reason they have disappered. If so, which Startup item (or Services item) should I tick to make them reappear.
