Can Change The Generic Shortcut Icon
Aug 26, 2009It's just a little thing but is there any way to change the generic shortcut icon that often appears on the desktop for the more obvious one - eg BBC logo etc?

Start Menu Icon But Displays A Generic Icon
Apr 19, 2008I installed new software and pinned the executable to the start menu. But, Vista displays a generic icon in the start menu for this program. All other programs pinned to the start menu display the correct icon. Any way to get Vista to dispaly the proper icon for this program??

Mar 20, 2009Since installing IE8 RTM in Vista SP1 x86 I've been having some problems with internet shortcut icons not displaying correctly on my desktop. I've tried deleting and redoing them, tried using AM Deadlink to refresh my Favourites icons to no avail. They show normally in Favourites but show as a smaller version within a white frame on the desktop. This doesn't seem to effect all of them, just some.
I've attached two thumbnails to illustrate what I mean. The first one is the Canada Post item in Favourites and the second one is the same shortcut on the desktop. As you can see there there's another one doing the same thing for Newegg.ca. I think I am right in saying that it's not a case of rebuilding the system icon cache as that only effects system icons, am I right? FYI desktop resolution is 1680 x 1050 and I have the desktop icon size set to Classic.

Nov 26, 2007How do i remove the white space on the start menu?. Everytime i add a shortcut to the start menu it just keeps getting bigger and bigger and it wont file up the empty space.I've tried everythiing in the customize settings and it still wont fix it.

I loaded a program (Corel Painter IX) and placed a shortcut on my desktop... Windows has seen fit to place a little "Windows Security shield" over the icon. When I look at the shortcut's properties, the icon appears without the shield.
Why has it done this, and how can I address it?
Cyberlink Icon, Delete The Shortcut
May 15, 2010A registered version of Cyberlink Power2Go came with my laptop. I only use it occasionally but do not wish to uninstall it. I try to keep my desktop free of clutter and the program had an icon ever since my first boot. I delete the shortcut and it disappears as with any other program, into the recycle bin. When I next boot the PC the icon has recreated itsself.

Vista create a shortcut with a generic icon, instead of that with the 2 screens like in second picture. Rarely the system put the second picture icon, but after a few of minutes, the icon come back to that ugly generic. Why system change the icon without reasons? I have installed Vista only 2 days ago with all updates. How can I do in mode that the system always use the second picture icon?

Dec 17, 2008Every time I create a shortcut, usually by right-clicking on an executable and then choosing Create Shortcut from the context menu, the default path is always set to, for example, C:Program Files (x86)My Applicationmyapplication.exe. However, I already set my default Program Files and Program Files (x86) location to be in the D: drive. Nature of the Problem After installing Vista Ultimate x64, I installed TuneUp Utilities 2009 and from there, I set the default Program Files location to my second partition which is D:. I expected TuneUp Utilities to make the necessary changes to the registry. To make sure that no programs were left out in C:Program Files and C:Program Files (x86), I manually re-created the 2 folders in D: and then copied all the files and folders inside. I rebooted afterwards. Upon boot, my expectations toward TuneUp Utilities 2009 seemed to be correct because the default now points to D: (whenever I install 64-bit or 32-bit programs). I had no problems running the applications as well.
But a problem arises whenever a shortcut is made. It doesn't matter whether it was created by the installer itself or created manually. The target path always points to C: while the Start In path points to the correct one, which is D:. Whether it be in the Start Menu, on the Desktop, or in the Quick Launch menu, the same behavior happens. It's often a pain to edit the shortcuts manually- doing a right-click > Properties > change C to D > Change Icon > Apply > OK every time I install a new application or decide to create a shortcut for a certain portable app. I believe there's a registry entry that I can change so that the default Shortcut path now defaults to D: instead of C:.
Shortcut Icons Are Windows Defualt Icon
Mar 14, 2009All shortcuts in Explorer are the Windows default icon. The Start Menu and Desktop shortcuts are fine. Also, some folders such as "History" and "Temporary Internet Files" are the Windows default icon. I've deleted the Icon Cache, which did nothing.

Jan 4, 2008I accidentally changed my user folder shortcut name in Windows Explorer under Desktop.
It was changed when I tried to save a file to the desktop and accidentally create new folder while highlight the user folder shortcut. It might be a bug in the system, since I can’t duplicate the change again.
I have tried to rename it but nothing happens.
I deleted it but it came back after refresh (F5).
There is no property available since this is a special folder or shortcut like network shortcut in Windows Explorer.
I briefly went through the registry and search for ‘shell’ related value but find none to resolve the issue. Did the search on Google and this forum, I have found nothing related to this problem. Maybe I use the wrong word for the search. Does anybody know how to reverse the change or edit in the registry?

Feb 25, 2009When I open up my computer one of the drive letters (E in the right pane has a 3DHA (3D Home Architect) icon in place of what should be a regular drive icon. I guess when I was test installing 3DHA, it somehow messed up that drive icon, though I have no idea why, but their web site offers no help. I've since removed the software but nothing I've tried will allow me to change the icon back to a regular drive icon. I prefer not to download a 3rd party program unless I have to. I've come across a few sites that offered some tips but everthing I've tried only changes the icon in the left pane. In fact the properties for the drive letter in the right pane don't even have a change icon button, anywhere.

Jul 11, 2009When you dump things in your recycle the icon changes to a pic of a full bin (as we all know) well mine doesnt , not until after a reeboot then it shows as having contents.
if i put something in my bin now , it will go into the bin , i can open the bin and its there to be recycled but the icon wont change , if i dont empty the bin upon next reboot the bin will show as having contents so im assuming its not the icon cache thats screwed up (i have rebuilt it just incase and ive checked the correct icons are selected)...

Just gone to view the pics again and says the following: The drive or network connection that the shortcut (then the image number) - Shortcut.Ink refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disc is properly inserted or the network resource is available and then try again. I have no idea what this means but deleted the pictures of the camera as I viewed them and they were fine.

Jan 31, 2010I'm having a problem with some of my document icons appearing as the "generic" icon rather than the program-specific icon that indicates what program created them. This occurs for all of my MS Office documents and Acrobat Reader PDF files. It does not happen for MP3 files.
The problem started a couple days ago following a botched System Restore to fix another issue. SR froze for about an hour in the "Initializing" stage, at which point I did a hard reset. Here's a rundown of what I've tried already. Nothing has worked.
1) Deleted iconcache.db from AppData/Local and restarted.
2) Restarted in safe mode and then in normal mode.
3) Changed the screen resolution to 16-bit and back to 32-bit.
4) Ran a few spyware scanners: Malwarebytes, Spybot, Adaware
5) Tried right-clicking on individual files and associating them with MS Word, Acrobat, etc.
6) Doing another system restore to "fix" the original aborted System Restore, but this one had to be aborted as well 7) Did plenty of Googling, which turned up nothing beyond the above fixes
