When I create a new desktop shortcut to a webpage, I like to assign a distinctive icon to it - either an ICO file, or it seems possible to assign a BMP bitmap image. Trouble is, windows keeps changing it back to the default internet shortcut icon.
View 5 RepliesAll shortcuts in Explorer are the Windows default icon. The Start Menu and Desktop shortcuts are fine. Also, some folders such as "History" and "Temporary Internet Files" are the Windows default icon. I've deleted the Icon Cache, which did nothing.

In Vista, I could use SetupPreferredAudioDevice key in INF file to make it as default at the time of installation, but I could see that this key is no more valid in Windows 7. Is there any alternative for this?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI installed SRS Audio Soundbox on my HP laptop running vista ultimate with Realtek HD audio. It installed a audio device of its own, which I can select under control panel->sound. SRS Soundbox panel is set to start with windows. But I only want to use SRS to process audio coming out of Zoom-Player, so I have setup Zoom Player to use this audio device instead of default Realtek. My problem is that everytime laptop restarts or wakes from sleep (essentially everytime SRS's control panel starts), SRS makes itself the default audio device, which I have to go and change back to Realtek. Is there a way I could lock-up the default device, so it wouldn't change?? or do something else so that Realtek stays the default audio device.

I would like to be able to use the X32 bit version of IE as my default browser. How can I accomplish this? I have one game provider that runs only on X32 bit, and I would like to be able to download their games. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium Edition X64 bit SP2.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSince installing IE8 RTM in Vista SP1 x86 I've been having some problems with internet shortcut icons not displaying correctly on my desktop. I've tried deleting and redoing them, tried using AM Deadlink to refresh my Favourites icons to no avail. They show normally in Favourites but show as a smaller version within a white frame on the desktop. This doesn't seem to effect all of them, just some.
I've attached two thumbnails to illustrate what I mean. The first one is the Canada Post item in Favourites and the second one is the same shortcut on the desktop. As you can see there there's another one doing the same thing for Newegg.ca. I think I am right in saying that it's not a case of rebuilding the system icon cache as that only effects system icons, am I right? FYI desktop resolution is 1680 x 1050 and I have the desktop icon size set to Classic.
How do i remove the white space on the start menu?. Everytime i add a shortcut to the start menu it just keeps getting bigger and bigger and it wont file up the empty space.I've tried everythiing in the customize settings and it still wont fix it.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have several email accounts configured on my windows mail on my Vista home premium and one of them is configured as the default email. When I reply to emails received on email accounts other than the default email the "from" email address does not change to the email address of the received account.
I understand that the email address in the "from' field when I start a "new" message or create mail is that of the configured default email. My question is while replying to an email received in other configured accounts should not the "from" field email id change from the default email id to the email address of the email to which is replied.
So I've had to replace my computer and am just getting acquainted Vista...
I'm running Vista Home Premium x64.
I loaded a program (Corel Painter IX) and placed a shortcut on my desktop... Windows has seen fit to place a little "Windows Security shield" over the icon. When I look at the shortcut's properties, the icon appears without the shield.
Why has it done this, and how can I address it?
It's just a little thing but is there any way to change the generic shortcut icon that often appears on the desktop for the more obvious one - eg BBC logo etc?
View 6 Replies View RelatedA registered version of Cyberlink Power2Go came with my laptop. I only use it occasionally but do not wish to uninstall it. I try to keep my desktop free of clutter and the program had an icon ever since my first boot. I delete the shortcut and it disappears as with any other program, into the recycle bin. When I next boot the PC the icon has recreated itsself.

Vista create a shortcut with a generic icon, instead of that with the 2 screens like in second picture. Rarely the system put the second picture icon, but after a few of minutes, the icon come back to that ugly generic. Why system change the icon without reasons? Clicking 'Internet' icon gets me the message 'Internet Explorer has stopped working:". I tried 'restore' but it is not working either. I get the message 'an unspecified error occurred during system restore'. I scanned with AVG and the files it scanned are clean. On my start menu I have Internet Explorer, then Internet Explorer 64-bit. If I launch IE by using the default browser, where you click start and the top option is Internet, it runs the 32 bit version. If I click Start, all programs, then I can do the 64 bit version.

By default any documents I save are directed towards My Documents on the C drive - how I go about changing that so the default is my Documents on the E drive?

Just gone to view the pics again and says the following: The drive or network connection that the shortcut (then the image number) - Shortcut.Ink refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disc is properly inserted or the network resource is available and then try again. I have no idea what this means but deleted the pictures of the camera as I viewed them and they were fine.

View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter I close Internet Explorer my desktop Icon's become frozen. The tool bar and start menu work fine. I'm running Windows Vista with IE8. I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials, have used SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as my malware removal tools. I've used system restore and still having the same problem. I don't have a recovery disk, just the disk that Dell issues with it's new computers.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if someone could help me. I can't figure out how to make my color scheme stay in any particular setting. IE. I use WMP classic and it (I think) is not compatible with Windows Aero color scheme, so it changes automatically from Aero to Basic, then back to Aero when WMPC is closed.
That is not the problem, my problem is that I would like to just put the scheme back to Window Vista Basic, thus avoiding the need to change back and forth all the time. Everytime I reboot the scheme comes back as Aero.
This seems so simple, just select desired scheme, apply then once I logout or reboot those settings should save.
