How do i remove the white space on the start menu?. Everytime i add a shortcut to the start menu it just keeps getting bigger and bigger and it wont file up the empty space.I've tried everythiing in the customize settings and it still wont fix it.
View 6 RepliesI am having problems with creating shortcuts on my desktop. when i select send to desktop (create shortcut) it comes up with the error. Windows could create the shortcut. Check to see if the disc is full.I have over 180 GB free space left. To get things to the desktop i can drag it into the tab section next to the start icon, and then drag onto desktop.But when i do this i am always required to give permission and it creates two desktop icons.i have been having problems with my catalyst control centre but i dont think they are related.

I have always had two Search options under Vista. If I click on the Start button, there is a box at the bottom of the screen where I can enter a term and search. That option has never been very helpful. However, there was previously another Search option after I clicked on Start. It was among the list on the right side that includes Control Panel, Default Programs, Help and Support, etc. Using that option, I could enter locations to search -- I usually only want to search Drive C and am not interested in searching the Internet with this option.
Well, that second item seems to have disappeared! Have I lost my mind? As far as I can tell, this happened only after SP1 was installed. I located the same box by going to Help and Support and searching for it there (ironic, isn't it?), but I could not figure out where it is actually located. It doesn't make much sense to search for a search box so that I can enter information in the search box!!!
Can any of you tell from this description what has happened and how I can solve the problem? It would even help if I could create a shortcut to the desktop for that Search box, but that could not be done within the box.

It gets better, i then decided to delete what i thought was the music folder shortcut located on the desktop and hastily clicked the yes
button to trash it. I'm assuming the file names were too big for the bin, and lost over 1300 songs! I'm just after some answers as to why vista does this? Just FYI, the right way to get it off your desktop is to drag it back to it's default folder.
When I am working in command prompt the majority of the things I do require an administrative level command prompt. I normally have to right click on my command prompt shortcut and then select Run As Administrator. However, there is an easy way to modify the shortcut so that you no longer have to right click on it and select Run As all the time....

I have lost, for some reason, the Create a Desktop Short cut from my right click context menu.
I tried one thing and all I got was the Desktop icon on my Desktop. I did more searching but can NOT find: "the file *Desktop (create shortcut)* from the Default user folder."
I went to my User folder and there is no such item. Am I looking in the wrong area?
The new Network and Sharing Center in Windows Vista is great for the average Windows user but can be a huge headache for advanced users. When I need to make a change to my network settings I don't want to be forced to go through the networking interface for the average non-technical users. I want to go right to the settings screen and make the change.
I am a big fan of the old Windows XP network approach where I could modify all of the network settings and connect to wireless network from the Network Connections screen. In Windows Vista, the Network Connections screen still exists, as shown above, but you have to go through the Network and Sharing Center screen first. Using a very useful explorer trick I discovered when playing with "::" and explorer class IDs, you can create a shortcut that will take you directly to the Network Connections screen.
Right click on the desktop and select New and then Shortcut.
In the location box, copy and paste explorer.exe ::{7007ACC7-3202-11D1-AAD2-00805FC1270E} and hit Next....
I have been using Windows Mail for my Yahoo addresses and by right clicking on the W.M. icon in the programme list above the start button I put a shortcut on to the desktop that has been working very well. Today I have combined Yahoo and Hotmail addresses under the WLM umbrella. But I cannot find how to make a shortcut. Nowhere can I find the relevant WLM icon to make a shortcut from. Obviously I am missing something, somewhere, but what is it?
View 8 Replies View RelatedSince installing IE8 RTM in Vista SP1 x86 I've been having some problems with internet shortcut icons not displaying correctly on my desktop. I've tried deleting and redoing them, tried using AM Deadlink to refresh my Favourites icons to no avail. They show normally in Favourites but show as a smaller version within a white frame on the desktop. This doesn't seem to effect all of them, just some.
I've attached two thumbnails to illustrate what I mean. The first one is the Canada Post item in Favourites and the second one is the same shortcut on the desktop. As you can see there there's another one doing the same thing for Newegg.ca. I think I am right in saying that it's not a case of rebuilding the system icon cache as that only effects system icons, am I right? FYI desktop resolution is 1680 x 1050 and I have the desktop icon size set to Classic.
So I've had to replace my computer and am just getting acquainted Vista...
I'm running Vista Home Premium x64.
I loaded a program (Corel Painter IX) and placed a shortcut on my desktop... Windows has seen fit to place a little "Windows Security shield" over the icon. When I look at the shortcut's properties, the icon appears without the shield.
Why has it done this, and how can I address it?
It's just a little thing but is there any way to change the generic shortcut icon that often appears on the desktop for the more obvious one - eg BBC logo etc?

I try to keep my desktop free of clutter and the program had an icon ever since my first boot. I delete the shortcut and it disappears as with any other program, into the recycle bin. When I next boot the PC the icon has recreated itsself.

Vista create a shortcut with a generic icon, instead of that with the 2 screens like in second picture. Rarely the system put the second picture icon, but after a few of minutes, the icon come back to that ugly generic. Why system change the icon without reasons? 1. Delete the icon and create a new one. No change.
2. Change icon in properties. No change the new one appears with the covering.
3. System Restore to an earlier point. No change all the desktop icons are covered over.
I want to create a "system account" in vista 64 bit Ultimate. It's just a user account, it will have a profile but 99% of the time no one will log in interactively with this account, more often with just the RunAs option.
Once I created this account though, I have another icon for it on the logon screen! How can I get rid of this icon? I don't want other people who use this PC to log on like that.
It's a normal local account, non domain environment. I was hoping to find a "Do not display a logon icon" checkbox where you change the icon pic or something simple.
I just found an Firefox icon on my Desktop that is pointing to one of my online Retirement Accounts that I did not create and have ideas how it got there. If I click it, it brings me to my Fidelity logon screen were it is waiting for me to enter a password. Of course I suspect fowl play but how can I verify Who/What/Why is got there and make sure it gets totally removed.?

Just gone to view the pics again and says the following: The drive or network connection that the shortcut (then the image number) - Shortcut.Ink refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disc is properly inserted or the network resource is available and then try again. I have no idea what this means but deleted the pictures of the camera as I viewed them and they were fine.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 (system specs: laptop 2.1 Ghz core 2 duo, 4 gb RAM, 500gb hd (about half full) nvidia 8400M GS, Avira Premium Security Suite). I have had the computer for about a year running fine with 1 main admin account. Now when I need to create an account for another user I cannot create one, either admin or standard. When I create it, using either the control panel or command prompt, it creates the user picture, making the account visible on the control panel user accounts screen, and on logon screen. However, when trying to log into the new account I am greeted with the error "User profile service failed on logon. User profile cannot be loaded." The standard fix for this from various forums is to edit the registry key of the account. However, on going to regedit I see that no key even exists for the account. On further investigation I discover that no user files have been created either. I attempted a system restore, but discovered that all my past restore points were gone, and intruigingly, the computer had stopped createing 24 hour checkpoints. I cannot say for definite whether it was this issue or another one that caused system restore to mess up, as I don't check my system restore all that often. Either way, system restore is not an option. There have been mentions of a full Vista reinstall, though if at all possible I would like to avoid this.

I don't want to create some dummy account just just to log in to join the domain. So I noticed that the printer icon for my printer became all white, IE a corrupted icon. So I went online and found information on how to refresh your icon folder. That didn't do anything. So I thought I'd uninstall and reinstall.
I have tried to reinstall my HP software from disc, and I get a 'new PSSWCORE.msi' file. I see the file on the install disc, yet it won't install. 'Network resource is unavailable.'
Now I cannot uninstall it. On my Add/Remove I see:

HP All In One Software 9.0
HP Imaging device Functions 9.0
HP On-Screen Cap/Num/Scroll Lock Indicator

How can I get these off my PC, and reinstall cleanly so I can use my rinter/scanner again?
I installed new software and pinned the executable to the start menu. But, Vista displays a generic icon in the start menu for this program. All other programs pinned to the start menu display the correct icon. Any way to get Vista to dispaly the proper icon for this program??
