I just found an Firefox icon on my Desktop that is pointing to one of my online Retirement Accounts that I did not create and have ideas how it got there. If I click it, it brings me to my Fidelity logon screen were it is waiting for me to enter a password. Of course I suspect fowl play but how can I verify Who/What/Why is got there and make sure it gets totally removed.?
View 4 RepliesI am having problems with creating shortcuts on my desktop. when i select send to desktop (create shortcut) it comes up with the error. Windows could create the shortcut. Check to see if the disc is full.I have over 180 GB free space left. To get things to the desktop i can drag it into the tab section next to the start icon, and then drag onto desktop.But when i do this i am always required to give permission and it creates two desktop icons.i have been having problems with my catalyst control centre but i dont think they are related.

Now, when I launch IE 7 (?) it tells me that my favorites are in a path that is not available. I also have mozilla Firefox and its Bookmarks are working fine.How can I find and/or change or re-link my IE favorites file. When I try to add new links to my favorites with IE they disappear and become inaccessible too. How can I create a proper path to put my favorites in.

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy desktop shortcuts with the program Icons have a white/windows shield over them. I can see the actual Icon behind the white. This occurred after I uninstalled an Adobe program Photoshop Elements 8.0 What I have tried:
1. Delete the icon and create a new one. No change.
2. Change icon in properties. No change the new one appears with the covering.
3. System Restore to an earlier point. No change all the desktop icons are covered over.
I want to create a "system account" in vista 64 bit Ultimate. It's just a user account, it will have a profile but 99% of the time no one will log in interactively with this account, more often with just the RunAs option.
Once I created this account though, I have another icon for it on the logon screen! How can I get rid of this icon? I don't want other people who use this PC to log on like that.
It's a normal local account, non domain environment. I was hoping to find a "Do not display a logon icon" checkbox where you change the icon pic or something simple.
Firefox frequently stops working and this seems to have something to do DEP (Data Execution Prevention) as the DEP icon appears in th system tray after each crash. I have tried to turn off DEP for Firefox but system insists that Firefox must run with DEP on.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have always had two Search options under Vista. If I click on the Start button, there is a box at the bottom of the screen where I can enter a term and search. That option has never been very helpful. However, there was previously another Search option after I clicked on Start. It was among the list on the right side that includes Control Panel, Default Programs, Help and Support, etc. Using that option, I could enter locations to search -- I usually only want to search Drive C and am not interested in searching the Internet with this option.
Well, that second item seems to have disappeared! Have I lost my mind? As far as I can tell, this happened only after SP1 was installed. I located the same box by going to Help and Support and searching for it there (ironic, isn't it?), but I could not figure out where it is actually located. It doesn't make much sense to search for a search box so that I can enter information in the search box!!!
Can any of you tell from this description what has happened and how I can solve the problem? It would even help if I could create a shortcut to the desktop for that Search box, but that could not be done within the box.

While dual core and quad core processors are a great advance in processing power, many games in XP and Vista run better on a single core. Need for Speed Underground is one such game. In my search to find an easy way to set processor affinity, I found the easy method outlined below. This method is the best I've found and actually WORKS without having to make system-wide changes. Here's a tip I use for some games which have problems with dual core. It saves the trouble of [alt][tab] out of the game each time, and I find it easier than creating a batch file. You may have already seen this, if so, the short answer is written in red at the bottom of this post..... Affinity and priority can be permanently added to an application's shortcut so that you don't have to change it every time you run it. To begin, create a shortcut to the game on the desktop. Right click the shortcut and select properties. In the "shortcut" tab, find the line for "target". Copy this in front of the target: C:WindowsSystem32cmd.exe /C START "Need for Speed Undercover" /high /affinity 1. Now, NFS Underground will automatically run in high priority on Core 0. Here's an example for the game Tombraider Legend which also balks at dual core processing.
The target line originally looks like this: "C:Program Files (x86)Tomb Raider - Legend rl.exe" So I change it to this: :WindowsSystem32cmd.exe /C START "Tomb Raider" /high /affinity 1 "C:Program Files (x86)Tomb Raider - Legend rl.exe" The affinity can be set to any CPU core by changing the number to the corresponding hex value.
1st core = 1
2nd core = 2
3rd core = 4
4th core = 8
5th core = 10 ( hexadecimal 16 )
6th core = 20 ( hexadecimal 32 )........
I know there have been several posts about this but can't seem to figure out some of the answers.
I have lost, for some reason, the Create a Desktop Short cut from my right click context menu.
I tried one thing and all I got was the Desktop icon on my Desktop. I did more searching but can NOT find: "the file *Desktop (create shortcut)* from the Default user folder."
I went to my User folder and there is no such item. Am I looking in the wrong area?
My desktop icons are not working correctly the applications are working fine but the icons are all the same attached is a jpeg of what it looks like as it is hard to explain the problem.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI accidentally deleted my desktop file and it asked me something about duplication. My fingers moved to fast and i agreed. Now I have two of the same icons on my desktop. When I try to delete one of the icons, either they will both go away or one will stay there and not work. Sometimes I can get it to only have 1 icons but once I install a new program, it will double the icons again. I added a desktop file again to "user" file and there is also a "Public Desktop" in the public file. This is very annoying and I would like to be able to put icons on my desktop without the duplication. How do I fix this? This situation is really hard to explain so I hope someone will have an idea of how to fix it besides reinstalling windows.

The account is a standard account, so when I try to delete the icon, it asks for permission. So I type in the password and it says it deletes it, but it's still there. So I try to delete it from the Administrator account(which is the built in account), but it says I don't have permission to delete it. It's not a big problem, but it's just somewhat annoying.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSince installing IE8 RTM in Vista SP1 x86 I've been having some problems with internet shortcut icons not displaying correctly on my desktop. I've tried deleting and redoing them, tried using AM Deadlink to refresh my Favourites icons to no avail. They show normally in Favourites but show as a smaller version within a white frame on the desktop. This doesn't seem to effect all of them, just some.
I've attached two thumbnails to illustrate what I mean. The first one is the Canada Post item in Favourites and the second one is the same shortcut on the desktop. As you can see there there's another one doing the same thing for Newegg.ca. I think I am right in saying that it's not a case of rebuilding the system icon cache as that only effects system icons, am I right? FYI desktop resolution is 1680 x 1050 and I have the desktop icon size set to Classic.
In Win XP I had an icon in my quick launch bar to return to desktop from anywhere. How can I get such an icon/command in Win 7?

If i right click/properties/ adobe acrobat document showing to open with adobe acrobat 8.1. it is updated to 8.1.2. They do open in adobe reader just fine. All other desktop icons working fine. how do i get adobe icon to show instead of scanned document? With my previous HP Vista laptop, didn't have this problem?

* deleting in safe mode doesnt help.
* tried shedding the file wid mcafee...doesnt work.
* deleting from cmd prompt doesnt delete.
* have tried to remove the registry entry, there are various entries and am not able to figure out the exact entry.
When i try to delete, the delete program goes into an infinite loop. says " recycling 1 item..calculating time remaining" and gets stuck.
I have a problem with a programs icon i am using. I dont know if anyone is firmilair with network magic but they have an icon that is undeleteable from the right click button on my mouse. Is there any other way?

It is a "Network Magic" icon left over from some stuff that got installed with an earlier wireless modem. Everything associated with the modem has been removed from the computer.
