Can Not Create Desktop Shrotucuts
May 6, 2009All of a sudden I can no longer create desktop shortcuts. If I right click on the desktop, click on "new" then "shortcut" nothing happens.

Apr 30, 2010I am having problems with creating shortcuts on my desktop. when i select send to desktop (create shortcut) it comes up with the error. Windows could create the shortcut. Check to see if the disc is full.I have over 180 GB free space left. To get things to the desktop i can drag it into the tab section next to the start icon, and then drag onto desktop.But when i do this i am always required to give permission and it creates two desktop icons.i have been having problems with my catalyst control centre but i dont think they are related.

Apr 27, 2008I have always had two Search options under Vista. If I click on the Start button, there is a box at the bottom of the screen where I can enter a term and search. That option has never been very helpful. However, there was previously another Search option after I clicked on Start. It was among the list on the right side that includes Control Panel, Default Programs, Help and Support, etc. Using that option, I could enter locations to search -- I usually only want to search Drive C and am not interested in searching the Internet with this option.
Well, that second item seems to have disappeared! Have I lost my mind? As far as I can tell, this happened only after SP1 was installed. I located the same box by going to Help and Support and searching for it there (ironic, isn't it?), but I could not figure out where it is actually located. It doesn't make much sense to search for a search box so that I can enter information in the search box!!!
Can any of you tell from this description what has happened and how I can solve the problem? It would even help if I could create a shortcut to the desktop for that Search box, but that could not be done within the box.
Firefox Icon Desktop Did Not Create
Nov 23, 2009I just found an Firefox icon on my Desktop that is pointing to one of my online Retirement Accounts that I did not create and have ideas how it got there. If I click it, it brings me to my Fidelity logon screen were it is waiting for me to enter a password. Of course I suspect fowl play but how can I verify Who/What/Why is got there and make sure it gets totally removed.?

Create Short Cut Game Desktop Not Run
Dec 14, 2008While dual core and quad core processors are a great advance in processing power, many games in XP and Vista run better on a single core. Need for Speed Underground is one such game. In my search to find an easy way to set processor affinity, I found the easy method outlined below. This method is the best I've found and actually WORKS without having to make system-wide changes. Here's a tip I use for some games which have problems with dual core. It saves the trouble of [alt][tab] out of the game each time, and I find it easier than creating a batch file. You may have already seen this, if so, the short answer is written in red at the bottom of this post..... Affinity and priority can be permanently added to an application's shortcut so that you don't have to change it every time you run it. To begin, create a shortcut to the game on the desktop. Right click the shortcut and select properties. In the "shortcut" tab, find the line for "target". Copy this in front of the target: C:WindowsSystem32cmd.exe /C START "Need for Speed Undercover" /high /affinity 1. Now, NFS Underground will automatically run in high priority on Core 0. Here's an example for the game Tombraider Legend which also balks at dual core processing.
The target line originally looks like this: "C:Program Files (x86)Tomb Raider - Legend rl.exe" So I change it to this: :WindowsSystem32cmd.exe /C START "Tomb Raider" /high /affinity 1 "C:Program Files (x86)Tomb Raider - Legend rl.exe" The affinity can be set to any CPU core by changing the number to the corresponding hex value.
1st core = 1
2nd core = 2
3rd core = 4
4th core = 8
5th core = 10 ( hexadecimal 16 )
6th core = 20 ( hexadecimal 32 )........
Lost Create Desktop Shortcut On Right Click
Apr 1, 2010I know there have been several posts about this but can't seem to figure out some of the answers.
I have lost, for some reason, the Create a Desktop Short cut from my right click context menu.
I tried one thing and all I got was the Desktop icon on my Desktop. I did more searching but can NOT find: "the file *Desktop (create shortcut)* from the Default user folder."
I went to my User folder and there is no such item. Am I looking in the wrong area?
Create An Account For Another User I Cannot Create One, Either Admin Or Standard
Sep 13, 2009I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 (system specs: laptop 2.1 Ghz core 2 duo, 4 gb RAM, 500gb hd (about half full) nvidia 8400M GS, Avira Premium Security Suite). I have had the computer for about a year running fine with 1 main admin account. Now when I need to create an account for another user I cannot create one, either admin or standard. When I create it, using either the control panel or command prompt, it creates the user picture, making the account visible on the control panel user accounts screen, and on logon screen. However, when trying to log into the new account I am greeted with the error "User profile service failed on logon. User profile cannot be loaded." The standard fix for this from various forums is to edit the registry key of the account. However, on going to regedit I see that no key even exists for the account. On further investigation I discover that no user files have been created either. I attempted a system restore, but discovered that all my past restore points were gone, and intruigingly, the computer had stopped createing 24 hour checkpoints. I cannot say for definite whether it was this issue or another one that caused system restore to mess up, as I don't check my system restore all that often. Either way, system restore is not an option. There have been mentions of a full Vista reinstall, though if at all possible I would like to avoid this.

Mar 5, 2009When I install Vista, it wants to force me to create a local account, and it won't let me create one called Administrator, becuase the name is already used (thus the Administrator account exists). I don't want to create some dummy account just just to log in to join the domain. How do I get past the "Choose a user name and picture" screen and log in as Administrator so I can just install the network drivers and join my domain?

Jan 30, 2010I don't find the desktop to be of much use, too many icons take away from the image I choose to display, but I do use the desktop toolbar from the taskbar quite a bit. There are icons that I cannot remove from the desktop toolbar such as the Network & Control Panel icons they won’t leave the toolbar, and I can’t seem to kill the IE icon off for good, either.

Aug 11, 2009I have rebooted my Laptop normally, I logged into Windows Vista and i was surprised by having the Desktop background disappeared along with it's Icons. The programs work fine... Won't Let Me Create New Folders
May 19, 2008After a month or two honeymoon with my new computer last summer, Windows Vista quit letting me create new file folders!!! This is really, really annoying, needless to say.
The other thing is that Windows Vista crashed this weekend and lost some of my files - and the start menu quit working. I think some of the indexes got screwed up or something. I don't know what brought this on except that we had a couple of power failures - and the machine doesn't seem to run chkdsk automatically on restart. If I started the machine and walked away and didn't see the prompt, then I've been using a 'dirty disk' for a week or two and it finally crashed. Or I also installed wireless networking. Also Windows Update downloads automatically and could have downloaded something incompatible with my software. So who knows what might have caused this .I couldn't restore either - now if I ask for Windows restore, it comes up
with an error message.I've been using DOS and windows machines for 20 years and I've never had this happen to me before. I've always had virus checkers and been conscientious about backing up my data.

May 20, 2009I have a sony vaio vgn fw21m laptop with vista home premium 32. Each time i try to create a new network connection (connect to the internet - bradband(pppoe)I enter the Username and Password) i get: "The wizard cannot create the connection". I was searching the forums over and over and I cant find nothing useful. There is no problem with my ISP (optical) (on an other laptop runing winXP I can connect with no problems). The funny thing is that I was able to connect to this ISP with no problems, but I lost the conection shortcut after a vista system restore (there was a keyboard problem, no biggy). I also can connect to another ISP (on another location) that does not require a login/password I just have to eneble the right profile. What I can deduct is, that it is probably a problem directly connectet to vista network and sharing center. I alredy reinstaled the ethrnet driver and vaio smart network.
