View 3 RepliesAll of my picture icons were changed to standard-generic icons when I had my computer restored to the factory direct setting. Now they don't display anything except a flower, house, ect. My question is: How do I change the picture icon setting back so I can see a tiny preview thingy for each icon, instead of having to click on each one to see what they really are?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem with some of my document icons appearing as the "generic" icon rather than the program-specific icon that indicates what program created them. This occurs for all of my MS Office documents and Acrobat Reader PDF files. It does not happen for MP3 files.
The problem started a couple days ago following a botched System Restore to fix another issue. SR froze for about an hour in the "Initializing" stage, at which point I did a hard reset. Here's a rundown of what I've tried already. Nothing has worked.
1) Deleted iconcache.db from AppData/Local and restarted.
2) Restarted in safe mode and then in normal mode.
3) Changed the screen resolution to 16-bit and back to 32-bit.
4) Ran a few spyware scanners: Malwarebytes, Spybot, Adaware
5) Tried right-clicking on individual files and associating them with MS Word, Acrobat, etc.
6) Doing another system restore to "fix" the original aborted System Restore, but this one had to be aborted as well 7) Did plenty of Googling, which turned up nothing beyond the above fixes
I am not certain that this can be done in vista, but... Whenever I open a folder containing pictures, the picture files appear as generic icons and don't show their thumbnail. How can I get my picture files to show as thumbnails? Also, I use several picture editors (Picasa, Fastone, Elements 4, etc). Can I get them all to appear in "Open with" recommended section. When I right click on a picture file and select open with, I get recommended and other programs. I guess, now that I have fiddled with this a little, that what I really want to be able to do is to place the programs I want into the recommended section and remove those that I don't want there (like put them into the Other Programs section. May I assume that once I know how to do this (if it is possible), that whenever I get an "open with," I should be able to customize it?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI don't know what happened here, but my shortcut that points to the snipping tool turned into one of those generic icons - and it says that it can't find C:WindowsSystem32SnippingTool.exe. Sure enough, a check of System32 shows it's not there. I didn't go in there. so I have no idea what happened here. It's not in the recycle bin either, so it didn't get accidentally deleted, at least not recently. So, is it as simple as grabbing a copy of SnippingTool.exe from another installation and pasting it into System32? Any risk in this (aside from it not working if there were some dependencies that are also gone?) If that doesn't work does sfc restore this?

View 6 Replies View RelatedNone of my jpeg images show up in any folders, no thumbnails of them, but the bitmat ones show. I have already went in and made sure the show icons instead on thumnails was not checked, I've tried system restore, I've deleted the iconcache folder so it would be rebuilt, I've changed the monitor from 32 to 16 and back to 32 again. And restarted everytime I tried something new. I work in photoshop a lot, so it makes it really hard when you go to open a picture and there's no thumbnails in the folder, any folder. All of my pictures are now just plain ol icons. I've tried everything that I know to do. This is delaying me in a lot of work.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Canon S3IS digital camera which can take movies. The movies show an .AVI extension and (I think) use an MJPEG codec. After transferring the movie files to my (Vista) hard drive, their behavior is erratic:
- The movie files *will not* play in Windows Media Player. The WMP error message is: "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file". Clicking on Web Help reveals: "You've encountered error message C00D11B1 while using Windows Media Player."
- The movie files *will not* play in Windows Media Center; WMC says "Cannot Play Video - Windows Media Center cannot open the file".
- If I import the files into Windows Movie Maker, WMM appears to play them, but the preview screen is black............
I installed a program that I didn't like. I uninstalled it, but it didn't remove it's own association with JPG and other image files. I want to reassociate them with Explorer's Preview (which is still available on the rightclick context shell menu, but unavailable on any "open with" or "default programs" dialog).
Is there any way to do this? Maybe a explorer.exe command line parameter?
My Gateway computer has Vista Home Premium. My Toshiba laptop has XP.
I purchased a Sandisk Ultra II, 2GB to transfer data from my laptop to
the Gateway. The data transferred from the laptop to the Sandisk but
the computer with Vista does not see the data on the card. I saved a
photo from the Vista computer to the card and it shows up with the Vista
computer but not in the XP computer. Apparantly the card is fine. What
is my problem with Vista vs XP?
I downloaded and installed successfuly an update software program for my KODAK ESP Printer. Upon reboot I discovered my Acer X223W monitor suddenly reverted to a 'Generic PNP Display'...no rhyme or reason for this.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just come back from holidays and uploaded photos from my camera onto my pc. I usually just copy the files from the camera to my pc but I accidentally hit "cut and paste" instead of "copy". Soon after my pc froze and had to be restarted. I opened up the pictures folder on my pc and 63 out of 113 (the first 40 or so can be viewed and so can a few at the end - which confuses me even more) can't be opened!
I've tried opening them in Windows Photo Gallery only to get the message that the file cannot be supported or I don't have the latest update etc, however it still recognises that the files are JPEGs!?? It also recognises when the photos were taken etc, I just can't view the photo! I've tried opening it with several other programs to no avail.
Even though i use 1900X1200 res, I still Get Generic PnP Monitor on this card(XFX 980GX2). I already use the current driver and the beta driver but still Generin PnP Monitor. I also try to delete all the drivers to have a clean install driver to this card but again nothing happens. I dont know what to do anymore.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have Windows 7 Ultimate RC 32 bit that I'm using in dual-boot mode with Windows XP Professional SP2. I am using an old ViewSonic monitor and I don't have the drivers. Windows XP is apparently using a generic driver which lets me set any screen resolution I like and I usually use 1024x768. Windows 7 has a generic driver which will only allow 800x600. Does anyone know if the Windows XP video driver will work in Windows 7 and, if so, the best way to copy and install it?

View 5 Replies View RelatedA Vista SP1 Home Premium problem - 9 live icons covering 9 dead icons: Several days ago I had a desktop with 9 live, working icons at the bottom of the desktop. ie: recycle bin, computer, network, control panel, etc. The 9th icon was a folder called 'powershell'.
Several days ago I deleted the 'powershell' folder, and, underneath that folder, was surprised to find a dead copy of the 'powershell' folder. This dead copy cannot be accessed with selection, left-click, or right-click operations - so the 'Properties' info cannot be displayed.........

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been using Windows Vista Premium for over a year now. So far I've no problems with it yet. However, just recently, I noticed that the icons for the computer and recycle bin were gone. Futhermore, the icon for some of the folders on my computer were either blank or a icon of the computer. Some files (ranging from the .dll to .exe) were changed to the computer icon as well. The icons for the floppy drive and my usb also disappeared and are displayed by the icon that represents file that windows does not recognise. How I can restore these icons? I have tried a system restore back a week when they were all still good but that did not make a difference.

View 8 Replies View RelatedSo I just traded out my year old Gateway laptop (which stopped working) for a new Dell Inspiron. I've never been particularly impressed with Dell but the Tech Guy at Best Buy assured me the quality of their laptops had improved. Anyway, it came with Windows Vista Home Premium. Since it was a Dell it came loaded with a stardock with mac-like icons instead of desktop icons. I like it so I customized it with the icons for the programs I use most, stared typing up notes for medical school with MS Word, and started downloading music files.
So the other day I notice strangely that the dock had reverted back to the original icons that were present when I first got the computer. Then I noticed all of the files downloaded/saved to the harddrive had disappeared. So I start anew adding files and replacing most of the old ones. Then suddenly yesterday the dock changes again back to how it was...customized and the files that I originally had reappeared but now the files I saved when it changed the first time are gone. So what is going on? Is this some kind of glitch in the OS? Is there something wrong with the actual computer? how get my files back?
I recently(about a week ago) bout an Acer 22" LCD and a ATI HD 5750 card. Everything has been going fine..until this morning i turn on the computer and Im stuck in 640*480 and under device manager the monitor shows up as a "generic non PnP monitor"..
