View 9 Replies View RelatedAll of my picture icons were changed to standard-generic icons when I had my computer restored to the factory direct setting. Now they don't display anything except a flower, house, ect. My question is: How do I change the picture icon setting back so I can see a tiny preview thingy for each icon, instead of having to click on each one to see what they really are?

View 5 Replies View RelatedA Vista SP1 Home Premium problem - 9 live icons covering 9 dead icons: Several days ago I had a desktop with 9 live, working icons at the bottom of the desktop. ie: recycle bin, computer, network, control panel, etc. The 9th icon was a folder called 'powershell'.
Several days ago I deleted the 'powershell' folder, and, underneath that folder, was surprised to find a dead copy of the 'powershell' folder. The deleted 'powershell' folder was in the recycle bin, and an undeleted dead copy on the desktop. This dead copy cannot be accessed with selection, left-click, or right-click operations - so the 'Properties' info cannot be displayed.........
Everytime I restart my PC, my desktop icons go where ever they want each time. What is causing this and is their a way to lock the icons in place?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been using Windows Vista Premium for over a year now. So far I've no problems with it yet. However, just recently, I noticed that the icons for the computer and recycle bin were gone. Futhermore, the icon for some of the folders on my computer were either blank or a icon of the computer. Some files (ranging from the .dll to .exe) were changed to the computer icon as well. The icons for the floppy drive and my usb also disappeared and are displayed by the icon that represents file that windows does not recognise. How I can restore these icons? I have tried a system restore back a week when they were all still good but that did not make a difference.

View 8 Replies View RelatedSo I just traded out my year old Gateway laptop (which stopped working) for a new Dell Inspiron. I've never been particularly impressed with Dell but the Tech Guy at Best Buy assured me the quality of their laptops had improved. Anyway, it came with Windows Vista Home Premium. Since it was a Dell it came loaded with a stardock with mac-like icons instead of desktop icons. I like it so I customized it with the icons for the programs I use most, stared typing up notes for medical school with MS Word, and started downloading music files.
So the other day I notice strangely that the dock had reverted back to the original icons that were present when I first got the computer. Then I noticed all of the files downloaded/saved to the harddrive had disappeared. So I start anew adding files and replacing most of the old ones. Then suddenly yesterday the dock changes again back to how it was...customized and the files that I originally had reappeared but now the files I saved when it changed the first time are gone. So what is going on? Is this some kind of glitch in the OS? Is there something wrong with the actual computer? how get my files back?
Yesterday i accentially went into sleep mode, after resuming, my icons in taskbar are missing, also any thing i click on says something about programme assoications.
Only way i can do things i right clicking and run as admin, whats happen to vista 64.
where all the IE8 icons are stored? I mean all of them and not only the ones that are included in the iexplore.exe
View 6 Replies View RelatedI don't see my sound mixer / aim icons or any other icons anymore in the start bar.
I do see the clock & date, normally under that i saw for example the icon for external drives, processes, my virus scanner, etc. but they are gone now.
First my taskmanager was disabled, but i got it to work with the tutorial here on the forum. But still no icons.
Is there anyone that could help me getting back my icons?
This is my first time posting here. I searched the forum for an answer and became confused as to what answer might apply to my question. So, I appologize in advance if this question is redundant and/or placed in the incorrect section of the forum. I'm not sure if my problem is a file association problem, related to compressed folders, or a problem with Vista, or something else.
This is what's going on....
All of my zip files suddenly have Internet Explorer icons, but (right-click) "properties" still shows that the files are .zip files.
There is no 'Extract' option available when I right click on one of these files.
If I left click on one of these zip files, IE windows start opening and closing non-stop until I hit the on/off button and turn my computer off.
I don't know how IE got associated as the program to open my .zip files. At least I am assuming that is what has happened given that all my zip files have IE icons now.
The only thing that I can think of that may have caused this is when my husband tried to open a regular 'folder' (not a zip file) using the 'open with' option and he then selected MS Works to open the folder (he's not so computer savvy). After that little mistake this all started with my zip files. Don't know if it's related to the problem or not.
I sure would appreciate your help to get this fixed. Below are my computer details. Let me know if you need more details.
Laptop = HP Pavilian dv7-2177cl
Vista Home Premium x64bit
IE 8
All updates current
I have tried rebuilding the Icon cache, but this didnt quite work for me.
Is it because im using 32 bit?
my icons are like disappearing and i have no idea what to do.
I have no idea what I did but I have a folder on my desktop whose contents now appear to the left of the folder in a kind of veil all the way down the left side of the monitor. My icons that were on the far left are now to the right of those veiled folders located in the folder. I don't know how else to explain it. I absolutely hate Vista. I have never wasted so much time in my life. I see nothing better about it then XP but I spend hours trying find out what I've done without intention. I wish I could have gotten XP and foregone all the silly bells and whistles without paying an additional cost.

I've a problem with my Icons on my Desktop.

So i wanted to change it in the "Desktopsymboleigenschaften", but there are no icons, which i could change.
I recently noticed that I have two icons for volume--one says realtek HD audio and the other says realtek HD audio manager. I have no idea what the difference is between these two items.
View 9 Replies View Relatedi know this might just be a minor issue but im can't figure out why my icons are not showing up for some "files" like Adobe Extention Packages (.mxp) and (.html, .htm) and such not sure if i have others that are missing really haven't looked at all of them just yet but i can't figure out how to fix that. I am new to the whole x64 Vista so im not sure how it works when it comes to regedit and stuff like that if it's the same as 32 bit.
Additionally i have installed IconPackager by Stardock to try and fix it, no luck. Then i tried Microangelo On Display and that didn't work either. Not sure what else to do. Futhermore i have tried changeing the registry key to the default icon like in Vista 32 bit under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOThtmlfileDefaultIcon and setting the Default Value to "1%" and again that didn't work either. So let's just say i don't know where to go from there.
I have windows Vista Home premium, the Icons in the Help section are missing, also when I use Internet Explorer 7 it is the same. For example, if I vist this page with IE 7, all the left side menu and the top of the page are boxes with a red X in them, and they are all inactive.

View 7 Replies View RelatedOne day I was on the internet and when I closed it I noticed that my icons were gone. I was like wtf. I unclicked show icons and clicked it again and they call came up but in a different way than what I had them. So i spent some time arranging them the way they were. Now everytime I start up my computer they are gone. I do the same procedure but I dont have to rearrange them they are in the right spot. I have searched and came across a guy with the same problem but no one has helped him and it was asked like over a year ago. I did virus checks, updated my virus programs, reset icon cache, and refreshed it. None of the tips worked. I dont want to have to do this everytime I start my computer.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have just bought a new laptop as i fried the MoBo in my last one which i bought in the early days of Vista, not realising what system requirements were for Vista i landed up with a very under resourced in the hardware dept. laptop and i am shure my constant tinkering with the hardware caused the death of it.
Which brings me to my query (now that i am overly paranoid about tinkering with hardware) i have been researching and have found there is very mixed opinion on applying Bios updates and was wondering what people here thoughts. I have two pending Bios updates 1st addresses better support for SP2 and the 2nd improves system performance & LCD panel brightness
