Notification Bar Icons Disappeared?
Mar 7, 2009My volume icon and network icon have disappeared from notification bar.
I go to the taskbar properties to check on thing and the sport to click these icons are grayed out.

Notification Area System Icons Disappeared
Feb 24, 2010When I go to the Notification Area properties, only the "Clock" option is checked. The "Volume", "Network", and "Power" options are un-checked AND grayed-out so I can't check them. How do I get these system icons back? (I'm running Vista Home Premium-SP2, and the only recent changes have been "Windows Updates" - critical updates only.) Bob C.

May 30, 2008I've been using Windows Vista Premium for over a year now. So far I've no problems with it yet. However, just recently, I noticed that the icons for the computer and recycle bin were gone. Futhermore, the icon for some of the folders on my computer were either blank or a icon of the computer. Some files (ranging from the .dll to .exe) were changed to the computer icon as well. The icons for the floppy drive and my usb also disappeared and are displayed by the icon that represents file that windows does not recognise. How I can restore these icons? I have tried a system restore back a week when they were all still good but that did not make a difference.

Mar 8, 2009I'm Sorry I have no Idea where should I post this thread but this seemed like the best place... Lately, I was messing with my TaskManager, And In the Processes Tab, I saw the Dwm.exe (desktop window manager), I Ended it's process and all of a sudden, Everything was gone from my desktop... I Opened it again through the C:/Windows/System32 folder... it worked in the taskmanager, But still, Nothing showed up on my desktop. Everything is working fine, My Taskbar, Programs, and even I can locate my desktop icons through the windows explorer / search bar... But The Problem still exists... I have No Desktop Wallpaper... I have no Icons on my Desktop... My Desktop is just... Black...

Feb 9, 2009In addition to needing help, it's the 'help & support icons' that = disappeared. I have no idea how to restore them. The icons are huge numbers with no extensions.
I suspect it may have something to do with a system restore. renamed all folders to folder[2]. and left empty folders in their places. Something else, I just installed a new program, went to the folder, and = made desktop shortcuts. The shortcuts are there, and they work. But they have = no icons.
I hit properties, the actual icons show there. I tried resetting the = icons, they reset, but not on the desktop. =46or some reason I also had to use UAC to reset the icons. This UAC is killing me. Every time it pops up I expect the machine will = lock up..
Control Panel Home Icons Disappeared?
Jan 3, 2009I am running Home Premium x64, and went to use my control panel, in "Home" view, and can not see any icons...but, I can in classic view....how do I replace the icons? I see others have the similar issues, but can not seem to find a solution to this issue.....

Apr 18, 2008IE Favorites has disappeared, then after rebooting my desktop ikons became re-arranged. WHAT'S GOING ON ? I'm running Vista64 w SP1. My desktop folders are re-located to a D drive. The OS is on the C drive. I still have all the "D:<username>Favorites" files that previously appeared in the IE favorites list.

May 12, 2009A Vista SP1 Home Premium problem - 9 live icons covering 9 dead icons: Several days ago I had a desktop with 9 live, working icons at the bottom of the desktop. ie: recycle bin, computer, network, control panel, etc. The 9th icon was a folder called 'powershell'.
Several days ago I deleted the 'powershell' folder, and, underneath that folder, was surprised to find a dead copy of the 'powershell' folder. The deleted 'powershell' folder was in the recycle bin, and an undeleted dead copy on the desktop. This dead copy cannot be accessed with selection, left-click, or right-click operations - so the 'Properties' info cannot be displayed.........

May 29, 2008so I finally said the heck with it.. and I disabled the UAC.. becuase it's very very irritating for it to stop EVERYTHING I do on my system.. But, every single time I restart my Machine I get the little popup, and the notification that it's been changed and the little RED X warning in system tray. I don't like seein a bad mark when nothing is wrong.. so I went into the setting and found a place where I could click do not notify, but show Icon.. so now the popup is gone, but it's still there.. is there ANY way I can completely get rid of it so It doesn't bother me every singe time I restart my system... just a thought.. let me kno please.

Mar 24, 2009So I just traded out my year old Gateway laptop (which stopped working) for a new Dell Inspiron. I've never been particularly impressed with Dell but the Tech Guy at Best Buy assured me the quality of their laptops had improved. Anyway, it came with Windows Vista Home Premium. Since it was a Dell it came loaded with a stardock with mac-like icons instead of desktop icons. I like it so I customized it with the icons for the programs I use most, stared typing up notes for medical school with MS Word, and started downloading music files.
So the other day I notice strangely that the dock had reverted back to the original icons that were present when I first got the computer. Then I noticed all of the files downloaded/saved to the harddrive had disappeared. So I start anew adding files and replacing most of the old ones. Then suddenly yesterday the dock changes again back to how it was...customized and the files that I originally had reappeared but now the files I saved when it changed the first time are gone. So what is going on? Is this some kind of glitch in the OS? Is there something wrong with the actual computer? how get my files back?

I go Taskbar and Start Menu Properties --> Notification Area and then i tick Hide Inactive Icons but the arrow is still missing.

Sep 8, 2008I have WU to notify me when updates are available for download, so I can decide what and if to download and install them. I noticed that I havent gotten a notification in awhile, usually WU has updates available every week. when I check for updates through WU, it says its up to date.. ( with the exception of an optional update for SilverLight..) last install was 8/15. but there are defender updates after that date installed, ( defender update has its own settings I'm guessing at this point?? ) Attached is a snip of the update window...kinda paranoid that I'm either not getting updates, or they are still being installed without notification?

Jul 31, 2009Not sure which newsgroup I should be using. Hope this is the right one. I have an avast icon in the Notification area. Each time it completed an virus data base update, it would pop up and make a verbal announcement. It is quite annoying, and sometimes disruptive. I tried to hide it by : right click task bar > Properties > Notification Area > Customize > select Hide on avast! ( both ). Won't work. Still shows up for an announcement.

Aug 20, 2009Just recently a new icon appeared in the notification area and I can't get rid of it or even find out what it is. If you hover over the icon, there is no pop up message saying what it is. Left and right click don't do anything at all. I've looked in the customise icons section but it is just listed as "<no title>".
The icon looks like two figures in front of a small window, with the windows shield at the front. I've tried to attach a screen shot of it. It's the second one from the left.
It appears shortly after starting up the laptop and then won't go.
I've got an ACER Aspire 5735, running Vista Home Basic.

Persistant Icon In Notification Area
Mar 11, 2009I have an Asus Motherboard that has an EPU-6 Engine (EPU = Energy Processing Unit, all it does is maximize energy usage on the mobo). It comes with a small app that puts itself in the Notification Area so that you can change between energy profiles easily. I like the app, but I don't want it shown there all the time. I already tried the "Hide Inactive Icons" option, and also tried to hide it manually by selecting "Hide" from the drop down menu in the "Custom..." options. The problem is that it hides the icon, but when I reboot, all those settings are undone. Is there a way to fix that?
