IE Favorites has disappeared, then after rebooting my desktop ikons became re-arranged. WHAT'S GOING ON ? I'm running Vista64 w SP1. My desktop folders are re-located to a D drive. The OS is on the C drive. I still have all the "D:<username>Favorites" files that previously appeared in the IE favorites list.

All my favorites are still in a folder in my documents but l dont know how to get them back onto the favorites list and why they went missing in the first place. l tryed system restore but that did not restore the list. , l'm on windows vista IE. l know where my favorites are all kept in documents(favorites) but they have gone from my drop down list when l get a web page up and would like to put them back onto the main page .

Lately, I was messing with my TaskManager, And In the Processes Tab, I saw the Dwm.exe (desktop window manager), I Ended it's process and all of a sudden, Everything was gone from my desktop... I Opened it again through the C:/Windows/System32 folder... it worked in the taskmanager, But still, Nothing showed up on my desktop. Everything is working fine, My Taskbar, Programs, and even I can locate my desktop icons through the windows explorer / search bar... But The Problem still exists... I have No Desktop Wallpaper... I have no Icons on my Desktop... My Desktop is just... Black...
View 9 Replies View Relatedjust downloaded IE8, and now, seemingly randomly, I can't access my Favorites from the altC or altA bar whatsoever. even more odd, the Favorites folder has disappeared from My Documents (i reassiged the location to a backup drive previously, but that is still there). when I try to bookmark something (ctrlD, or click add to favorites) absolutely nothing happens.. no popup, no nothing.
i've tried several things already from changing downloading the fix_fav_il prompt, to resetting folder properties, etc. and i tried uninstalling/reinstalling IE8 already, which didn't help anything nothing seems to work. I feel like if the Favorites folder would reappear in MyDocuments, I might be able to figure something out, but it just won't come back!
Basically, after trying to change the Favorites menu item in the Start menu into a link to the Videos folder, I've messed up something deeperin Vista that causes it to display two Favorites icons in my user folder, like so: The problem is, when I delete one, the other is deleted as well, like they are linked. I'd like to fix whatever the problem is, but I'm not sure where to even begin for this. I noticed, that if I create a new user account, that new user only has one Favorites folder. I think that helps to narrow the potential trouble spot a bit.

However, just recently, I noticed that the icons for the computer and recycle bin were gone. Futhermore, the icon for some of the folders on my computer were either blank or a icon of the computer. Some files (ranging from the .dll to .exe) were changed to the computer icon as well. The icons for the floppy drive and my usb also disappeared and are displayed by the icon that represents file that windows does not recognise. How I can restore these icons? I have tried a system restore back a week when they were all still good but that did not make a difference.
View 5 Replies View Relatedwe are a college and we have a multiple user platform, but in our labs we have shortcuts on the desktop to all of the school's subscriptions, like MyItLab, and Courseport etc. I have created these as a favorite in IE7 and cannot right click and send to desktop a shortcut! We need the shortcuts to show, and we need them to show for all users. At this point, I cannot get them to show for any user including myself that has admin priveledges!

I go to the taskbar properties to check on thing and the sport to click these icons are grayed out.
In addition to needing help, it's the 'help & support icons' that = disappeared. I have no idea how to restore them. The icons are huge numbers with no extensions.
I suspect it may have something to do with a system restore. renamed all folders to folder[2]. and left empty folders in their places. Something else, I just installed a new program, went to the folder, and = made desktop shortcuts. The shortcuts are there, and they work. But they have = no icons.
I hit properties, the actual icons show there. I tried resetting the = icons, they reset, but not on the desktop. =46or some reason I also had to use UAC to reset the icons. This UAC is killing me. Every time it pops up I expect the machine will = lock up..
When I go to the Notification Area properties, only the "Clock" option is checked. The "Volume", "Network", and "Power" options are un-checked AND grayed-out so I can't check them. How do I get these system icons back? (I'm running Vista Home Premium-SP2, and the only recent changes have been "Windows Updates" - critical updates only.) Bob C.

I looked onto 1 of the treads which had the solution to such a problem and changed the value of shell in the registry to explorer.exe.. However even then my desktop is not appearing on start up .. Only when i start a new process from task manager "explorer.exe", then my desktop appears..
i have scanned the entire internet but still can't find a solution to my problem which started Today. Firstly, I am using Dell e6400 working on Vista Ultimate. Everything started when I installed printer Samsung SCX4016 drivers and rebooted. And after this (censored) reboot everything was gone from my desktop. The other bad thing is that when I try to click on Documents and Drive C: - i see that the explorer window just flashes for a second and then nothing happens. Another bad thing is that I can access the Control Panel but... I can't access user accounts to try and create a new one. I have uploaded a quick video of what's happening on my laptop and I really hope it's possible to save my data.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I just traded out my year old Gateway laptop (which stopped working) for a new Dell Inspiron. I've never been particularly impressed with Dell but the Tech Guy at Best Buy assured me the quality of their laptops had improved. Anyway, it came with Windows Vista Home Premium. Since it was a Dell it came loaded with a stardock with mac-like icons instead of desktop icons. I like it so I customized it with the icons for the programs I use most, stared typing up notes for medical school with MS Word, and started downloading music files.
So the other day I notice strangely that the dock had reverted back to the original icons that were present when I first got the computer. Then I noticed all of the files downloaded/saved to the harddrive had disappeared. So I start anew adding files and replacing most of the old ones. Then suddenly yesterday the dock changes again back to how it was...customized and the files that I originally had reappeared but now the files I saved when it changed the first time are gone. So what is going on? Is this some kind of glitch in the OS? Is there something wrong with the actual computer? how get my files back?
I just cleared my desktop because it was absolutely cluttered with icons and stuff, but now it's like the Icons are part of the wallpaper, because I can't click on them, can't drag them, and if I drag a different icon over it it's still there underneath the other one.

There are icons that I cannot remove from the desktop toolbar such as the Network & Control Panel icons they won’t leave the toolbar, and I can’t seem to kill the IE icon off for good, either.

The programs work fine... I tried choosing a picture and setting it to a desktop background. Still nothing. I terminated explorer.exe, The desktop background appeared. but since i terminated it, the taskbar and icons are gone. View 4 Replies View RelatedThis is my third post (twice in IE 7 forum...no answer). I cannot delete favorites from favorites list. I have tried deleting while in safe mode also. After a short while they reappear again and seem to be multiplying! I cannot find the temporary folder either. I have Compaq Presario with Windows Vista Home Basic and Explorer 7 installed from factory. Purchased January of this year. I am familiar with Windows Xp and could find my way around the computer files, but Vista is really different and complicated! I do not know what else to do. I also have Webroot AntiVirus with AntiSpyware installed and have unchecked the box for favorites sheild because I am constantly being asked to keep or remove the favorites, but if I click remove they still return and I am asked over and over again the same question.

I have just bought a new laptop as i fried the MoBo in my last one which i bought in the early days of Vista, not realising what system requirements were for Vista i landed up with a very under resourced in the hardware dept. laptop and i am shure my constant tinkering with the hardware caused the death of it.
Which brings me to my query (now that i am overly paranoid about tinkering with hardware) i have been researching and have found there is very mixed opinion on applying Bios updates and was wondering what people here thoughts. I have two pending Bios updates 1st addresses better support for SP2 and the 2nd improves system performance & LCD panel brightness
All of a sudden I have got duplicate desktop icons. It seems that the top layer is working as a shortcut but when I click & drag it there is another icon underneath which does not work. If I try to delete them only the top icon disappears the bottom one will not be moved or deleted. I have tried to use Unlocker, done disc clean up, defrag, disc check, run McAfee, superantispyware and no baddies found. I've posted a screen capture of just one icon but all the icons are affected.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI followed a tip stating that you could remove the labels from icons on your Desktop by turning on the NumLock, holding down Alt and typing 0160 on the numbers keypad. I did this for several shortcuts and it worked fine. I also did it on two files, which also worked. Now I want to delete the 2 files and can't. I also can't rename them. I have moved the documents that were in them to new files, so the ones I can't delete are empty now.
How do I either rename the files or delete them? My goal is to get rid of the two files.
What the title says right after i restarted my computer the taskbar and all my destop icons were gone i still got my sidebar running but thats it. I tried right clicking my desktop nothing showed up. I would like a answer asap

Haven't been able to figure this one out, so thought the experts can have a crack at it. I have Vista Home Basic 32bit on a Dell DimC521. There have been several occasions when I paste a file onto my desktop only to notice that it doesn't show up. If I try to repaste it again, Vista asks me if I want to replace the existing file (meaning the original paste is already there, just hidden somewhere). If I use the Rearrange option to align the icons, the mystery icon then shows up. Thus, I'm 99% sure that the icon is off screen somewhere.
I have a similar problem with Napster's Mini Player feature (legal copy with paid subscription). The Mini Player is checked as "Always Display" but it's nowhere to be found on the desktop. It can't be minimized to the taskbar either so I can't do that Move or Rearrange option. I have only 1 monitor (not dual) and I don't play any full-screen games that would alter the display settings so I'm puzzled (1) where these items are hiding and (2) how to bring them back so I can use them, and (3) how to prevent this problem in the future.
